We weren't drinking tonight so we skipped the mojitos, but they were flowing at every table I looked at. Go for the mojitos, the music, and the food, in that order. Service was lovely. What a wonderful surprise. We were steered here by a trusted CDMX local who said it was a fantastic Bar / Cantina...and they were spot on. Stellar bar food, with my partner stating they were some of the best Fish Tacos she had ever had (and she is a San Diego native, so that's high praise). I'm not going to lie, we got there pretty late and had already been out and about having a great time, but the staff were helpful and fun, helping us not butcher Spanish as much and steer us in the direction of the right rums (this is the place responsible for our newfound love of a PROPER Cuba Libre). I will go so far to say this was a highlight of our trip and will be revisited. read more

We had a nice meal here on a Sunday night. Place had a lot of character. We started with drinks. I had a very good local beer and others had a very good mojitos. We ordered the beef empanadas that we shared. Very good with an excellent sauce. Three of us ordered the chicken in a Cuban creole sauce with beans and rice. Another got the sliced pork with onions and beans and rice mixed. The chicken with the sauce was delicious and the black beans very good. The sliced pork was very good but the beans and rice mixed was kind of dry. Our waiter was great and they had salsa music which was nice. They also sold Cuban cigars for a good price. Not everything is what one would expect it to be or hope for. Being in Mexico, my expectations were high for a really, really good Cuban meal and it was not to be so here at La Bodeguita del Medio (Store in the Middle). Don't get me wrong, the food was extremely good, very good, but just not really Cuban. Somehow since opening their doors in the late nineties to the 2020s, something must have changed. Albeit, in many ways it feels Cuban - décor style, table settings, Old Havana-style ambience, Son rhythms playing in the background, the look and feel of Old Habana via 18th and 19th and early 20th century architecture. But when it came to the food... it left a lot to be desired. It was very good - but not really very Cuban. It was missing much of the cumin, oregano, Caribbean sofrito and Cuban mojo flavors so traditional to this cuisine. We went all-out Cuban by ordering some traditional goodies such as Tostones Relleno (seasoned ground beef stuffed plantains), Ropa Vieja, Plátano Maduros, Picadillo, Frijoles Negros, Arroz Blanco and Pollo Cubano. Overall, the food is good and worth the eats, the ambience, fun and refreshing and the atmosphere makes this a try-out place while visiting CDMX for sure. read more

Let me start off by saying that this review is solely for their drinks, and I did not have any food. We were walking around in the Condesa area of Mexico City, and happened to stumble upon this place. You walk in and you're instantly transported to Cuba. They have lots of seating available inside. We were able to find a place at the bar and I ordered a strawberry Mojito, which had fresh strawberries. You see them grinding the ingredients and it was delicious my brother got the original Mojito. It was his first time trying it and he really liked it. My favorite part was that they had a live band inside playing, which really set the mood. The band played really well and just made you feel good. The place was pretty packed for it being around 6 PM and it looked like everyone was having a good time. The other thing that I liked was that on the receipt they also gave you a conversion and let you know how much your total was in US dollars if you wanted to pay in dollars, which I thought was very useful. I have been here a handful of times and only had one bad experience (severely overcooked and under-seasoned chicken). Aside from that, they're pretty consistent and the house specialty chicken (my go-to) is delicious. Same goes for the rice and beans and fried plantains on the side. The mojitos are delicious, but perhaps lacking a bit on the rum. The service is hit or miss, but the Cuban band makes up for it. In case you forget to tip these guys, they'll remind you. Overall, a very cool and fun ambiance. They also sell Cuban cigars, but since you can't smoke them there, I have never tried one so I cannot speak to their freshness. read more

Tourist fake trap. For anyone who has been to La Bodeguita in Cuba, this is heresy. The mojitos were among the worst I have ever had- ton of sugar, not enough lime, and no mottling of hierba buena. The food atrocious- the green plantains for the tostones and mariquitas were ripe, the frijoles and congri were flavorless, the picadillo and ropa vieja lame. The music was a complete disappointment. The quatro of musicians played well, but took 1-hour breaks and while playing was drowned by the loud recorded music on the sound system which only included one Cuban song by Celia Cruz, the rest ware Puerto Rican singers- Gilberto Santa Rosa, Gran Combo, Bad Bunny, etc. The receptionist had no interest in helping. I stopped by this place for some quick late night eats and fell in love with the atmosphere. The bar was extremely lively and it almost felt like I was walking into a really hip party. The walls were covered floor to ceiling with sharpie writing, there was a band playing some upbeat music, and everything just seemed very exciting. I started out with 2 mojitos, and they were by far the best I had while I was in Mexico. For my meal I got the Cuban rice and beans, which was really tasty but not quite filling enough for an entrée. So I made the awesome decision to try the flan for dessert. They have a couple different varieties, but the server recommended the one with orange liqueur - and it was amazing! It was also garnished with a chocolate drizzle and toasted almonds on top. I loved that it was rich, sweet, but also not too heavy at the end of the meal. They give you the opportunity to buy Cuban cigars here too! So my server showed me to a cabinet, and I picked out a cigar to try because when in Rome... I paid the bill which was extremely reasonably priced. After paying the server brought back my receipt along with a sharpie to make my own mark on the restaurant. ***For foreigners visiting this restaurant*** SCAM ALERT. This is not a 1 star review because of the food or the atmosphere. Actually this restaurante is really nice, they have live music and the food is ok. But when you pay with a foreigner card they will degrade the US dollar rate against the Mexican peso by at least 20%. What do I mean by this? I am from the US and I've been living here for more than a year so I am up to date on what the US dollar is worth here. I even use an app called Glove Convert that works in real time. When I went to pay I noticed my bill was $15 higher than it should. When I asked the server he called his manager. Turns out they were giving me a rate of 15.50 pesos instead of 16.70 which was the current US dollar rate at that time. When I asked the manager he gave me a very rude response "You should've asked what the rate was before you entered the restaurant" Now as someone who has lived here for more than a year this is the first time something like this has happened to me. Restaurants here do NOT charge you their own rate. The rate has always been what the US dollar is worth against the peso. I have a habit where before I pay I always check how much my bill is in dollars to make sure I am paying what I should. Actually the terminals they use to charge you automatically convert it to pesos to the current rate. I go out to eat out every weekend and this is a first. This restaurant is stealing your money which unfortunately is a very common practice here when you are a foreigner. I told the server I was not gonna leave him a tip as his manager is stealing my money and his manager should give him a tip from the money that's being stolen from me. My advice pay with cash or do not go here. Nobody likes to be taken advantage on. Remember your foreigner card will most likely charge you a 3% also so if you go here you'll be probably end up paying 25% more than you should. Shame on this restaurant. I will do some digging and find out if I can report this restaurant to the authorities. read more

After having drinks at a place right down the street, we walked past this place (and noticed it during the day as well. We were immediately attracted by the music and vibe - we had to check it out! It was very packed but we surprisingly got a table within 2 minutes. Despite the crowd, our waitress was on top of it! Our drinks and food came out rapidly. I had the best beans and rice. The fried cheese balls were delicious as well. Or mojitos were ok and not very strong. So we stuck with beers the rest of the night. We went for dinner on a Monday night at around 9pm. We saw the bad reviews but agreed to give this place a shot. We were seated quickly by the window in the room with live music. We were offered mojitos as we sat down. They were pretty good. We ordered the paella and it took about 10mi minutes I stead of the 45 minutes that the menu says. We started eating it and we noticed that the chicken was extremely soft and gooey. We cut the chicken up and noticed that it was completely raw. We sent back the paella and about 10-15 minutes they brought it back to our table. They didn't seem to care about the dangers of serving us raw chicken. After we finished with dinner and asked for the bill, the server comes back to us demanding a tip.. I was a bit insulted. Usually when a restaurant screws up this badly they give you a discount of maybe cover q round of drinks or something but Instead, we woke up with food poisoning. This is our last day in Mexico city and we had tickets to see the Frida Kahlo museum and have a great day but Instead, we are suffering from food poisoning... Don't be fooled by the environment or the label "Cuban". This is a weird simulation of what someone imagines to be "Cuban food". Their pollo special is drenched in an especially disgusting sauce that may be a disguise for poorly cooked chicken. The empanadas are served cold as are the rice and beans.
