Unfortunate experience on New Year's Eve at La Bona Pasta Ominously, as we walked in, a group leaving said, "Well, I guess we're never coming here again", Not a great sign. Our group of eight had a reservation for 7:15 and arrived around 7:05. Upon entering, we were greeted by a hole in the ceiling, a glass-doored fridge full of open pitchers of mystery liquids, and a strange assortment of oddly colored lighting. Not a great first impression. That said, we were seated fairly quickly in a private rear area of the restaurant. At first, the service was solid. We had private seating, were quickly served drinks, and the staff even adjusted the temperature for us. We took about 10 minutes to look over the menu, and our server returned to take our order. Unfortunately, our entrees didn't arrive until about 45 minutes later. I understand we had a large group, but if the kitchen was unable to accommodate us in a reasonable timeframe, a heads up would have been appreciated. When the food finally arrived, we were disappointed with the quality relative to the price. The vegetables were overcooked, bland, and incredibly salty. I ordered the Dill Salmon. The sauce covering it was very strange. I offered it to others at the table, and everyone agreed the flavor was bizarre. I scraped the sauce off and ate the salmon itself, which was disappointing as well. The biggest issue of the night was finding a metal shaving in our food. After eating most of her meal, my girlfriend took a bite of food, and noticed a strange texture. She picked it out of her tooth, and upon inspection, realized she was chewing a piece of metal. When our server came back, she informed him, and he offered to remake the dish. However, he seemed oddly dismissive given the seriousness of the situation. At that point, we no longer trusted the food and all stopped eating. Some time later, a different server, possibly a manager, came by, and we asked for the check. He said he would apply a "discount" due to the metal shaving. When the bill arrived, he explained that he had taken 25% off that one item. Essentially, this amounted to about a $5 discount for a plate that contained metal. The person paying wasn't even sure how to react. We were served metal, yet they still expected us to pay $15 for that dish? After a brief pause, the server said he would remove the item entirely and walked away briskly, clearly frustrated. After we paid, he picked up the checkbook and walked away without saying a word. As we were preparing to leave, a man, presumably the owner or manager, came over and asked how everything was. We sat in silence, defeated and unsure what to say. We had been there for nearly two hours and were just ready to leave. One person mentioned enjoying part of their meal, which was genuinely the only positive takeaway. The manager said he would "tell the chef" and thanked us for coming in, wishing us a good night. That was the first time anyone had said that to us after our meal. Given that most plates were still nearly full, the comment about telling the chef about the one good dish felt tone deaf. Overall, it was a very poor experience. The only silver lining is that it turned into a memorable (and hilarious) restaurant story with friends. Truly the stuff of Gordon Ramseys Kitchen Nightmares. Tldr: Metal shavings in food, bad atmosphere, worse food, and hit or miss customer service. read more

The food last nite was amazing. The Vitello Marsala veal dish is the best veal dish I have ever had in metro Phoenix and I have been to many places in SCOTTSDALE which do not compare. The chef pounded the veal for 5 minutes to make it so tender. The butter sauce, and the side of mostaccioli and mixed vegetables were cooked to perfection. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. My wife had lamb which was also excellent. Have been coming here for 10 years and it never disappoints. Great Italian atmosphere. One of my friends had recommended La Bona Pasta . In his opinion he said the food was great. With that , I figured that I must try this place. I wanted to take some close friends out to dinner. They are pescatarian eaters . My wife is a vegetarian and I'm an eat anything kind of a guy. The restaurant is in a strip mall , tucked away in a corner. Coming in the place around 5:30, the place was empty. Very dark and my wife noticed the ceiling had many water stains. Not a good sign from the start. We all are not drinkers so it was just water with lemon. We were given complimentary garlic bread and heart shaped rolls which were warm and delicious. My wife isn't a big eater . She ordered Pan-Seared Vegetables Del Giorno with a kid size bowl of spaghetti. She enjoyed her meal. Our friend Carmen ordered Eggplant Parmigiana. She enjoyed it but thought the Eggplant should have been sliced thin . Texture can take your meal to the next level. Our friend Mike ordered one of the specials of the night . Lobster Ravioli & Scallops and a bowl of Soup Del Giorno ( Clam Chowder). Mike(y) like the commercial says "I like it". I had the Vitello (Veal) Parmigiana with Minestrone Soup. My take is food was good but portion was small for the price. We had Tiramisu and Oreo Cake that was excellent. Service was friendly but invisible, and very slow. No one came around for refilling our water, had to ask for that and more bread. Food way too long to get. No one asked us how everything tasted. My wife and I are both retired from WA State, and have lived here for over 10 years! We discovered La Bona Pasta a few years back and quickly realized we'd never had Italian food this great! Tonight, we decided to have Christmas Eve dinner here. Like the times we've been here before, this family owned restaurant did not disappoint! My wife had the Pollo Picatta and loved it! The chicken (pollo) was tender and flavorful. I had the Salciccia, (Italian Sausage dish)! It was simply amazing! Christian, our waiter was extremely attentive and very knowledgeable! We also enjoyed a nice bottle of Chianti from Tuscany! Very delicious! For dessert, we couldn't decide between the Pistachio Cake and the Chocolate Coconut Cake, so why not?? We ordered both, with the intention of taking home the leftovers! Hint: Neither made it out the door, they were so damn delicious!! Took my mom & kids for a birthday lunch. Place was pretty empty I'm guessing due to location. It's stuck in the corner and we first thought it was closed. I'm originally from Rhode Island and I had not found any great Italian places in the area. A friend recently recommended La Bona and I thought I would try it out. I got the dill salmon which was served with pasta and my husband got the lobster pasta dish. Both were really good. Not as good as the places on the east coast, but a close second. My only complaint is that the pasta was not al dente, but the sauce was very flavorful. Service was good as well. read more

La Bona Pasta is small mom & pop business that really wants to share the love with their cooking. After entering last night, the owner quickly greeted us with a smile. He gave us our choice of tables and we were quickly seated. The tables were nicely covered with linen tablecloths and napkins. The dining room was nice but there were supplies and beverages is display cases that would be better out of view. Also an upgrade in some of the decorations and pictures would add to the appeal. It did take a little while for the sever to show up to ask for our drink orders, but he did manage the dining room pretty well for being the lone server. We did order several glasses of wine and then dinner. The menu was pretty in-depth with salads, pastas and seafood. I wanted something with a cream sauce so the server suggested the Lobster Pasta A La Bona and my wife got the Champagne Scampi. After ordering, I went to the men's room to wash up. On the way back, I looked through the small serving window and watched the owners prepare our meals. It was really awesome watching the tall flames and flipping pans. My advice is to knock that wall down so that your customers can watch you work! Really, that would add a whole other element to the dining experience there. The owner brought the food out after a bit, again with a smile. It was very nicely presented. She then asked if we wanted cheese. Yes please! So the brought out a bowl of cheese an sprinkled it over our food. I am a Parmesan cheese junkie though and really would prefer a shaker at the table. Still, she wasn't stingy and I got as much as I wanted. The food was very good and leaned more toward authentic than some others in the area. I really wanted to love this place, but from the unhappy/grumpy host and server, to the Bruschetta with 'garlic' that was completely overpowered/drenched in balsamic (wow, not good as it was all you could taste - picture) to the alfredo, that we substituted the chicken with shrimp (extra $), which was so bland to a point of almost flavorless. And last was the champagne scampi, which was okay and possibly good to those that like a thick sauce. I think if the host, who was also our server, had even the slightest smile and or even an ounce of energy this experience would've been 100% better. read more

This one is a tough one for me. I really wanted to like this restaurant. It seems like a local favorite and who am I to take anything away from their Italian restaurant. Seems like they have been here quite a few years. We stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night. It was kind of a red flag only 2 tables were seated. One would hope a symphony of aromatic delicious food would permeate the dining room as the kitchen is close to the front door. Rather a certain dirty dishes smell greets you right as you walk in. We almost walked out. Decided to give it a chance anyway. The server was nice and attentive seated us immediately. Offered the nightly specials. But we ordered right off the menu. Their version of caprese salad comes with 1 strip of prosciutto but it all worked very nice. Seemed fresh & delicious. The bread is not any version of Italian bread it's more like a biscuit texture with garlic & parsley. It's very dry. We didn't get balsamic or olive oil with it. The pasta was cooked well but the marinara sauce was pedestrian. I don't believe it was house made. The risotto with Italian sausage is an explosion of flavors. Very unique and tasty if you like meat sauce. I ate the entire plate of it. The Lobster pasta La Bona was where it all went wrong. The lobster was not fresh and rather had a fishy taste to it. The season was ok. We mentioned it to the sever and he didn't offer to replace the dish or waive the fee for it. The deserts were ok tasting. The cappuccino was not as strong as I prefer but still had a nice flavor to it. We had the restaurant all to ourselves for at least 1hour 30mins. Although drivers were picking up mobile orders. The wine was decent too. My take is that this place has been here a while and older customers seem to love it. Maybe mostly senior citizens who don't come out late night. The ingredients don't seem to be high quality. We have had mozzarella de Búfala in Italy this caprese salad claims to be that but I don't think so. The cook seems to be set in his ways. It would have been nice to have him come out to speak with us regarding our lobster dish issue. But that didn't happen. This place might be good for you but not for us. Good luck. read more

I was a little concerned that there was no one else in the restaurant, it was deathly silent and very tiny! The waiter was nice but pushy, I asked for a wine list and he suggested the $103 bottle and when I asked for something different he seemed to shrug and walk away. Another table of four walked in and immediately our server spent more time with that table offering several wine/drinks and food lists (in what seemed because they were spending more money). Perfect evening meal for our anniversary. We liked it so much the first night we went back for their wine dinner, generally on the last Sunday of the month. I had the carbonara and my wife the seafood Napoli. Man it was great. The chef kicked it up three days later for the 45 people that attended the wine pairing dinner. Every dish splendid, the ravioli, the shrimp and the pork chop. The chef's secret is his sauces that don each serving. We came here the other night and thankfully we had reservations, a must really. The front sitting area to the left had only one table free, while in the back sitting area, had a party of over two dozen. Whoa. Yes, they were slammed. Yet, sweet Jose and Isabelle tried to manage through it all. Incredible, given they were very, very short handed. Yet... the four of us decided to stick it out and came away feeling happy we did. We order some wine and mixed drinks to start. The wine came within ten minutes, while the mixed drinks took over twenty. Yeah, I know. We must have been very chill that evening and deep in convo. I ordered the sausage appetizer, which was mostly peppers and onions. But with our entrées, we hit pay dirt. The Lasagna, Chicken Parm, Shrimp and Angel-hair Diablo were all delicious. Umm, worth the wait. We ended with some espresso and cappuccinos and Sambuca which hit the spot. Except to pay $25 or so each and yes, bring some patience. Enjoy. read more
