I was in Montreal for a day to walk 100,000 steps, and 1 of the 4 food requirements I had for…read moremyself was poutine. I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. All the staff was so welcoming, and surprisingly chipper this early in the morning. SHOUTOUT TO LA BANQUISE! THANK YOU FOR FUELING THE JOURNEY! IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

Not accessible. I had a very hard time moving around the restaurant with my crutches, especially…read morewith the stairs. I took my niece from New York City here because La Banquise is supposed to be the "must try" poutine spot in Montreal. We had a great night overall: soccer game, drinks at Mellon Brasserie (none of us were drunk; my wife was 100% sober). Everything was fun and chill. But La Banquise completely ruined the end of that trip, and I'm not okay with letting this go. We paid for the food and service. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: at the end of the day, we were customers, and we deserved to be treated with respect. We waited for our Uber outside. It was cold, and I'm on crutches, so my injuries hurt badly in the cold. After waiting outside for a long time with the Uber not showing up, we went back inside to wait near the door, in the corner, not blocking anyone. The staff at the door immediately came in and started rudely and aggressively kicking us out. He refused to speak English with me after I clearly said, "I don't speak French, so talk to me in English." He kept talking French and was rude to my wife, my niece, and me. He told the waitress in French that we were "blocking the way," which was 100% false. (My wife speaks French) We were just standing near the entrance, waiting for a few minutes, trying to get out of the cold. When I went to the cashier and explained, "This guy is kicking me out. I just paid for my meal. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: you're still a customer, and you shouldn't be kicked out and treated like trash just because you're waiting for your Uber on crutches. I'm on crutches, it's cold, and my Uber isn't here yet," they called a waitress who also started telling us to leave instead of helping. She didn't try to find a solution; she just said, "No, no, leave, leave." This is not just bad service. This is disgusting, disrespectful treatment of a paying customer with a mobility issue. My niece, who had a blast all night, ended the trip saying, "What the f....? You bring me here and they treat us like this?" She now has a bad impression of Montreal because of this place. My niece is from New York City, and she's also posting her own review. That review will be seen by people in New York and by tourists looking for recommendations. If you treat tourists like this, you're not just ruining one night, you're ruining the image of the whole city. Montreal is supposed to be a welcoming city for tourists and people looking to have fun and be treated with respect. La Banquise failed that completely. The food was okay, but the experience was terrible because of how we were treated. This is unacceptable. You should be ashamed of how you handled this.

While I didn't have the chance to try any of the food, the service alone left a great impression! They also have a lovely outdoor patio with cozy lighting and greenery making it a great spot to relax and enjoy good conversation. Tucked away with a beautiful terrasse in the back, it's the kind of place you'd almost miss--but absolutely shouldn't. The service was fantastic from start to finish--attentive, warm, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling overbearing. The food was equally impressive. Everything we tried was delicious and thoughtfully prepared, with portions that are just right. The beef and mushroom tartare was a standout--rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced--and the braised lamb cavatelli was simply outstanding. The lemon tiramisu for dessert was the best ive ever had. Overall, a fantastic experience. Can't wait to come back!

Thank god I found it because one large chicken + chorizo poutine can feed my hungry wife and I and we even have leftovers! The fries are fresh, crispy, and the gravy is made with drippings of their own rotating rotisserie chicken. The chorizo sausage is barbecued to perfection. Did I mention they give you a lot of food for the price!? They also have a beautiful bakery with Bolas, strawberry cheesecake, and other fresh-made bakery items. They also have great service, with friendly cashiers, and the quality of food is 6 out of 5 stars. It's my favorite place and I come here almost once a week. They are passionate about their food and generous, and if you don't feel like paying up-the-arse for delicious Portuguese chicken Romados is the place for you. It's homey, they have spicy and mild Piri Piri sauce to choose from, the fries are tasty but not too salty, Chicken Salad is really delicious, and furthermore, they have family options, rice, potatoes, and you can order a half or quarter chicken, as well as other options like soup and barbecue pork (also very good). Thank you Romados!

I actually thought it was closed but there was a sign on the door to come through another entrance. This restaurant seems to share the same kitchen and space as a Greek restaurant. The space is modern and clean, mix of high table chairs, bar stools and banquets. The menu offerings are perfect for what you would expect from a restaurant that specializes in mac and cheese. There are many choices along with burgers and sandwiches as well. We got to try a philly mac and cheese, the 4 cheese macaroni and a burger- Everything was delicious and fairly priced. The regular mac and cheese is very creamy and mild, I would have liked something with slightly sharper cheddar but it was still a treat and very decadent. I would recommend this place for a quiet lunch if you happen to be in the neigborhood. If you are driving before of limited parking, and it is metered. We were already exploring the area so it seemed like a natural fit, so off we went. My general assessment of Else's is that it is more of a neighborhood spot than a destination eatery, which is totally fine because usually those are some of the best spots. Upon entry, we were greeted by a large open dining area with tables scattered throughout and a bar along one of the back walls. The decor is casual, with a dark color scheme to match the bar setting. Their drink menu is larger than their food menu, but despite that they have a nice variety. I didn't see any pattern with the food - there was a mix of plate sizes and types of cuisines. The pulled pork sliders looked good so I went with those; the dish came with two sliders and a side of coleslaw. I really enjoyed this - there was a generous helping of pork in each slider and the sauce had a nice tang to it. I'm normally not a fan of slaw since it is usually cream-based, but this one wasn't so it was quite refreshing and a good contrast to the pork. Service was great, the entire team was friendly. Overall, this was a really good find in Montreal - if you're looking for something low-key with solid food then this would be ideal. I'm interested how the vibe changes at night, so I would be open to returning in the evening for a drink and to explore more of their menu.

The kind of place you wish you had in your neighborhood, so people would call your neighborhood "vibrant" too. The menu is small and eclectic (tacos, butter chicken, Mac 'n' cheese). The rice was perfect and the sauce was good, though the large cubes of tofu were a bit bland themselves. Wifething had the fancy mac 'n' cheese, which was creamy and smooth. Endlessly busy on a Saturday night, but a good mix of two-tops and larger (8-10) groups. Great service and friendly staff!
