    Chips and salsa

I am so impressed at the vegetarian menu selection! There are multiple options, which did not feel like permutations of the same dish. The staff was attentive and fast with service. They customized dishes according to my liking, which I appreciated. Food quality was excellent. Chips and salsa felt fresh, as did the chimichangas we ordered. Located in a strip mall, so parking was abundant and easy. Clean restaurant. Overall will definitely return.

This corner strip mall location is a pleasant surprise!! The menu selections all sounded delicious. It was hard to choose something. The service and ambiance were both excellent. The food was so delicious. Fresh ingredients, authentic flavors. Breakfast and lunch items. I cannot wait to go back to have lunch again.

Chip, salsa, and a nice cold Modelo

I decide to stop in this small restaurant for lunch. It has been several years since I tried the food here. I was quickly seated, and a menu and salsa & chips follow soon after that. The place is small, and there is constricted feel here. I settled on the Carnitas Verde and a Modelo Especial to drink. The carnitas were in chunks and tender, but lacked the traditional outside crust. The verde sauce was thin and rather bland. The beans were whole and under-seasoned, salt and a bit of hot sauce were needed. The rice was ok. The house made hot sauce was really good, plenty hot. The Avocado slices were fresh and flavorful. This is a noisy place even when few tables are occupied, with much of the noise coming from the kitchen area in the form of much shouting and banging, not especially relaxing. A rather ordinary Tex-Mex meal, doubt I'll find my back here.

Let me start off by saying that this has been my favorite Mexican restaurant in town and the rating is based on my most recent experience. Their menu is the most unique and authentic to Mexican cuisine. The margaritas were very watery and were a disappointment. Their chips were fresh, thick and crispy (loved them) and the salsa was very flavorful. The chunky guac was basic. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce- The mole sauce was incredible. But the dish as a whole disappointed as the chicken was just boiled without any flavor. The steak tacos were average with the grilled cheese being the best part of it. I have had much better experiences in the past with my favorite dish being their 7 chiles ACP (order at your own risk as it is very very hot). This time I was expecting more and left disappointed.

A plate of onions and I paid for steak. Ripoff.

Terrible food. Terrible service. No English. Good atmosphere Here is the dish I ordered. All onion. Tell them. They dont offer to replace it.

    Blackened Vegan Fajita veggies

I really debated leaving a review about this but I do think when an experience is bad enough to sour you on a place you were formerly excited about then you should share. I was excited to take my mom to La Botana because they have an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu and as I'm a long time vegan, it's made it hard for us to go to Mexican restaurants together since they can be so hit or miss with veg food. In this case, she ordered vegan fajitas and I ordered two mushroom tacos minus the cheese. Straight out the gate, I wasn't super happy that my 'side' of pinto beans was in like a ketchup sized cup. They're not truffles, they're pinto beans and without an actual side of them you're paying 6 dollars a piece for small tacos without any protein. But I thought, we're paying more for supporting a local, community, authentic, family place, right? But the real problem was the fajitas. After almost 13 years vegan and 2.5 vegetarian before that, I have eaten a LOT of veggie fajitas. What I've never had happen is have someone bring out fajitas that proceed to steam and smoke for a full 5 minutes (as in I was done with most of my tiny tacos before my mom could take a bite). When I say smoke, I mean BURN, as in we could see and smell the veggies on the skillet burning. If you were at home you would have tipped them out of the pan onto a plate before they were ruined and smoked up your kitchen, level of burning. In a restaurant, she tried to used her fork to stir them to keep minimal veggies from blackening and even poured some of our extra red salsa on to try and cool them. My mom doesn't like to make a fuss and she really didn't want them to remake it and just throw her food away (no chance of that, just wait) so she didn't say anything. But I was so disappointed that I called over a waitress who called over a manager? Owner? I don't know and tried to explain that the skillet was brought out too hot and her veggies burned black. I tried to emphasize like, I KNOW the point of fajitas is they came out sizzling in a skillet but they're not supposed to burn black as you sit there! The woman goes to the back (?) and then comes back and proceeds to look me in the eye and kind of shrug and say that the kitchen says that's how supposed to be, it's hot. Like....what? We paid 17 dollars for a blackened burned skillet of veggies, half a cup of plain black beans and rice, and a lettuce leaf with a tablespoon of guac and a slice of tomato that is called "guacamole salad." My mom finished as much of the veggies as she could as the wait staff kind of avoided our table until we asked for a check, which still had everything on it because of course blackened fajita veggies are normal. I could have about cried because with us splitting a margarita it was a 50 dollar meal, when we could have gotten more and better for half as much as chipotle. And also because now I'm bummed that I just genuinely don't want to go back after such a bad experience.

This will always be one of my favorite Mexican places in the area, mostly because of the incredible vegetarian menu! We stopped by late Saturday afternoon and got seated right away: greeted with warm chips and salsa. Salsa is not too spicy but very fresh tasting, and service is always fantastic. We started with the vegetarian queso fundido: wow! Soy chorizo to my heart. At first we were worried the queso was thin, but as soon as we mixed that baby, OH MY GOODness. Salty, spicy, cheesy, and a perfect compliment to the chips and salsa. We were so excited to try the newer vegetarian options and they didn't disappoint: I got the Brussels chimichanga and hubs got the bok choy chimichanga. What's wild: they were both so different flavor profiles! Mine was a spicy mix of pintos, veggies, perfect potatoes and tomatoes, topped with a white cheese and what looked like a tomato/chili crisp. INCREDIBLE: spicy savory and just full of homey love. The bok choy one had that incredible soy chorizo again: again full of veggies but a more chorizo profile. 10/10 both. Always a chill and kind atmosphere: never feel rushed always feel welcomed.

Stopped in last Wednesday for lunch with some friends. It had been forever since I'd been in so I was excited. It felt like they had done up the inside and they had some delicious sounding specials. I ended up going for the chicken enchiladas and they were delicious. Can't wait to go back to try more.

    Early Bird Menu

Tried out La Botana tonight and was pleasantly surprised at the diversity of their menu. This is not your standard run of the mill Mexican restaurant. They have a TON of unique options to choose from including an extensive vegetarian selection as well as vegan options. I ended up getting the Mucho Queso Combo, the sauce was very flavorful and had a nice heat to it. My only complaint would be that my poblano did not have the core removed so it was a little bit on the seedy side. Overall it was a tasty dish and you can tell that it was made fresh. One uncommon part of their menu that I wanted to highlight was their early bird menu. They have a lot of lower priced options if you come a bit earlier for dinner which I think is great!

We couldn't decide what to eat today. We don't get to Winston Salem very often and drove around for a while and we spotted this little Mexican place. It is a small family owned business. There isn't a lot of seating but what seating there is, is comfortable. They advertise homemade Mexican food. The staff wore masks and I wish I could tell them not to but they were wearing them anyways. We were seated properly and our order was Promptly taken. The chips and salsa we're good. The salsa have an excellent flavor heavy on the garlic and cilantro and just the right amount of space. The staff was friendly and efficient our food came to order I ordered a lunch special of chicken soup and a salad. My wife ordered lunch portion of Verde enchiladas and my daughter ordered a ACP. The wait time on the food was minimal considering that things were they fresh. The soup was awesome because garnished with avocado and fresh cilantro with a squeeze of lime on the side. My wife's dish looked and smelled great and it actually tasted wonderful the Verde sauce was to die for. And my daughter who is a very picky eater when it comes to Mexican food really love their ACP. This place is really a hidden gem off the beaten path. The food was really good the service was good and the surroundings were comfortable. My only gripe was that either the air-conditioning was being overworked that day or it wasn't working because it was quite warm in the restaurant. This is definitely a place that you're going to want to try.

Best authentic Mexican I've had in the area! The street tacos were bomb, as well as the smoked pineapple margarita. Just amazing!

The chicken tacos were cooked well, but the cheese kept coagulating in the roof of my mouth. Wished it was smoother. The margaritas are ranked as follows: peach, strawberry, and passion fruit. For 12 oz, they are $7.50, which is great! The peach was fruity and tasty. Strawberry could get sickly very fast but still better than the passion fruit. The passion fruit was a thicker consistency of syrup, which threw it off a bit, and the flavor wasn't quite right. The berry sangria was missing something. It wasn't quite wine, not quite a fruit juice, and the fruit was all at the bottom, making it hard to drink. Not what we expected with the flavor profile. The quesabirria was flavorful with the beef and very tender. They definitely stuffed a lot of meat in the tacos, which will fill you up. Didn't like the cheese. It didn't pair well with the beef, and it was not enough in comparison. Overall, good tacos and would order again though. The service was fine. She was around enough for us to order more drinks and offered me a box at an appropriate time. The music wasn't too loud, barely heard over the crowd that started forming as we sat. Will try them again because the price is right.

I recently visited another Mexican restaurant in the area, after which I was critical about aspects…read moreof the visit including the diminutive amount of salsa verde on a dish where the sauce was a key element. Well, guess who makes sure there's plenty of salsa verde on your plate? Good ol' Pancho Villa, that's who. I have a certain fondness for Pancho's Green Burrito, and when I ordered that dish for lunch today there was a pool of delicious green liquid literally spilling from both sides of my plate! A bit messy for the table, yes, but far better than the scant offerings of their competitor. Pancho has long been one of my most consistent dining experiences in this city, which is why it's often the target of my attention for lunch. They get patrons seated quickly and orders filled quickly. The food is always good and there's plenty of it to enjoy. The service staff does a great job of attending to the wants and needs of their diners. It's easy to see why the place is popular -- and thus why a parking spot can be tough to find around lunch time.
