Downtown gem found via Yelp! Everyone that gave a 5 star review was dead on. Tulum is fantastic. The restaurant itself is cool as hell. I love the set up, the decor and the vibe. The staff are the friendliest people in Winston Salem. Luis is a tremendous dude. Aside from his in depth knowledge of the menu, he had excellent recommendations. The small talk was absolutely our pleasure. Luis is a cool guy and wonderful soul. As first timers, we went with the ribeye tacos. Let me tell you, it's a legit ribeye on a taco. Came here for a late night dinner after a lovely Yelp event in the area. Got there about 20 minutes before closing, which somewhat bothers me because I think about the staff that I'm sure has been working hard and ready to go home. Despite it being later in the night, everyone there was still very welcoming and ready to take care of us. I'm always down for fajitas so that was the choice for me this evening. Lots of flavor coming from the steak. Very tender and not just overcooked at all. Great portion that they give you, was able to save some for the next day for lunch. Still delicious the 2nd time around. Chips and salsa were also good and fresh. This restaurant is huge with lots of tables, as well as a long bar to sit at. THE BEST QUESABIRRIA TACOS I have had in a long time! They even compete with a hole in the wall place on a quesabirria hop evening in San Diego!!! The 3 tacos were a nice size, full of juicy shredded beef and cheesy goodness! The consume was the perfect compliment to the tacos and the hot sauce was a nice surprise for for an added kick! I also grabbed some of my husband's guac that came with his fajitas and ate it with the starter chips and flavorful salsa. The guac was also very good even though it had started to oxidize (it was almost closing time). I didn't mind the very slight oxidation since it let me know the guac was homemade unlike other places that try to make the preserved guac version look made in house. This restaurant was also very large and clean with plenty of seating which would be great for groups. There is also a very long bar! Our server was very sweet and attentive! He also made sure to bring me extra napkins for my deliciously messy tacos!!! Can't wait to come back and have the quesabirria tacos!!! She mentioned that Lulum was right next door to the hotel, which was perfect -- especially since the weather wasn't great and we didn't have to walk far. When we entered the restaurant, it was fairly quiet, with a few people sitting at the bar and a couple of tables occupied. If you've read any of my reviews, you'll know we enjoy sitting at the bar. We like talking with people, learning about the area, and just enjoying the atmosphere. The bartender greeted us right away, gave us menus, and took our drink order. My wife ordered a margarita and I had the same. She returned with our drinks and took our food order shortly after. My wife ordered a chicken dish -- chicken over rice with a cheese sauce -- and she enjoyed it. I ordered the Quesa Birria, which came as three pork tacos, and they were easily in the top three I've ever had. The homemade tortillas were excellent, the meat was very tender, and the chopped onions on top were a perfect touch. The dipping sauce that came with them really brought everything together and was very flavorful. Overall, the drinks were good but a little on the sweet side. They also added something sweet to the rim before dipping it in salt, which made it very sticky. Cutting back on that or just using lime with salt would be a big improvement. The inside was beautiful and plenty of seating. They have beer and a full bar, so get a delicious margarita while you're there! We had a group of 8 and the service was stellar!! Everyone loved the food and the drink were cold and delicious. The chips and salads are probably the best I've ever had. I told them it was my son's birthday and they surprised him with a song and cheesecake fully decked out with a candle. Everyone there was so nice. Very simple and warm spot for Mexican food. They had your typical chips and salsa, and the chips were warmed which is a plus. I got the Mexican Molcajete, something I've never had before, but I really enjoyed it. The chicken, steak, shrimp, and chorizo were all very well seasoned and the spices gave the broth a nice kick. I was not crazy about the cactus, but that's personal preference. I recommend using the tortillas on the side to make tacos as it is hard to eat out of the dish itself. The refried beans on the side had a good texture and the rice was just fine. The service was good and I was amazed it wasn't a bit more crowded considering the Mexican food here is pretty strong for Winston-Salem. Considering location, price, and food. I came here last night in the mood for tacos and a margarita- although I actually ended up getting a quesadilla, but I would definitely return to try the birria tacos because they look delicious and have great reviews. I didn't realize that they had some taco Tuesday specials (discounts on tacos and margs), and other nights promos too, so that's a nice incentive to return as well. It was not very busy- maybe two other parties, but I also came kind of early, around 630pm. I sat at the bar and was immediately provided food and drink menus. I love all things spicy, so I went with the watermelon mezcalita, which had mezcal, tequila, jalapenos, and grapefruit soda. The bartender actually double checked that was what I really wanted because he said mezcal has a distinct smoky flavor that is an acquired taste. I appreciated his caution but proceed anyway! And it was delicious. Instead of tacos, I ordered the quesadilla oaxaquena with steak, spicy guacadmole, and cilantre. It came with two sides, and I can never get enough guac, so I got a side guac salad and refried beans. The food came out really fast, probably under 10mins. The quesadilla was stuffed, definitely not flat and hand-holdable like I'm used to. Flavor wise, I enjoyed everything. The bartender also gave me an extra side of habanero sauce added a nice touch to everything. I had enough to take home and finish later on as a midnight snack/lunch the next day too. Had an excellent lunch at Tulum! Nestled right in the middle of downtown Winston-Salem on Cherry street, this spot for kicked up Mexican cuisine is sure to please anyone with a taste for some spice and bold flavors. We came in for a weekday lunch and it wasn't very crowded, but we got top notch service and food. The space is very large inside, with plenty of room to accomodate any size group. There is a sizeable bar and pleasant modern decor. A line of booths that seems to go on forever goes down the entire right wall, and our group of 3 was seated in one of these. We promptly were given menus, chips and salsa, and drink orders taken. In general, it ran like a well oiled machine in there. I was in the mood for some quesabirria tacos, so I went with an order of three of those. They were a nice size, plenty of beef and melty cheese, served with all the accoutrements and of course, a hearty consomme for dipping. It was thick enough to stick nicely to the taco on each dip, and had a wonderful flavor. Definitely some of the better birria I have had in the area. All in all, awesome place. Restaurant was quiet because it was late Sunday evening. The menu had great choices- some standards but also some specialties. I tried their specialty tacos burria (sp?) and they were delicious. My husband had the seafood served in a pineapple half and loved it. I stole his deliciously fresh side salad of avocado, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. He doesn't eat tomatoes. This restaurant doesn't look like much on the outside, but once you go in it opens to a bright and spacious, well lit hall with tons of seating and a long bar to the left. We come to DTWS often and tend to go to a few places we really enjoy, but the joy of being a Yelper is experiencing new places. This has been on list for a while and my wife and I had two different food experiences. She got a chicken taco salad that at the end became a fried tortilla full of bland soup. I got the Birria tacos, three tacos with a side of that delicious birria juice and they were excellent. I have to be careful with these because they are very rich and places we have had them at before I couldn't finish them...not here, they were devoured to the last morsel. Excellent first visit. It's a little bit of a barn, so if you want an intimate atmosphere this isn't it. The food we has was way beyond typical Mexican restaurant fare. The prime rib is a great cut and we'll seasoned, but in places it's too chewy for a taco. The salmon on the seafood salad was excellent. The house-made green hot sauce was a good medium heat. There also is a house habanero that is hotter but a bit sweet. Much richer flavors than a regular Tex-Mex. read more

We ordered our food for pickup since we were staying in the Marriott next door. They told me to give them ten minutes to have it ready, and you know what? It was ready in ten minutes! That's actually pretty rare. We ordered the chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. My wife is gluten intolerant, so when we got the tortillas we were concerned by their thickness and color, but they were definitely corn. We got the guacamole which was pretty good, and the chicken chorizo nachos. It's rare that I don't need some sort of sauce, but I didn't need it. I love me some good chorizo, and even my wife thought it wasn't too salty--that's a huge compliment! I can't speak much to the ambiance as I only walked in to pay and pick up my order, but it looked nice. I got a new job recently and my family decided to celebrate by letting me pick a choice of restaurant. I always love trying somewhere new, so I chose to come to Tulum for the first time. The inside was busy and lively. It seemed like a hot spot on a Saturday night! We ordered the cheese dip, which was very good. I also liked the salsa and could tell it was made fresh. Their menu includes a lot of standard Mexican dishes (that I'm sure are all very good), but I decided to go away from my normal options and ordered the Pina Tulum (no mushrooms). It was excellent and I'm so glad I did! The pineapple is carved out and has scallops, shrimp, onions, pineapple (of course), and bacon (!) with a side of white rice and avocado salad. The presentation was spectacular. The only downside was our service wasn't excellent, but I'm willing to give it another try. It can be hard to find parking, so the hassle of driving downtown, finding (or paying) for parking means we may not be able to come often, but it's definitely our "come back again" list. My second visit to this upscale Mexican was for lunch with my son. He was really looking forward to trying the Birria Tacos, and I wanted to try something else on the menu. We ordered draft beers, Guacamole Fuego, Quesobirria Tacos, and Carnitas Tacos - the taco dishes came with rice and beans. The beers and the complementary chips and salsa came quickly so we settled in to enjoy them. The salsa here has some kick, and the multicolored chips are fresh tasting. Then came the Guacamole Fuego and it was very nice - fresh tasting avocado and plenty of sliced jalapeños. Then the very good got even better! The tacos were out in another 15 minutes, and they were beautifully plated on a 3 taco metal rack keeping them nicely upright. The Quesobirria Tacos were sublime, with the consommé being the best I've tasted outside of Mexico and it really elevates the dish. There is also a Habanero Sauce that really packs the heat, use caution! If there is a better taco around I've yet to find it. The Carnitas Tacos were also excellent, though I would have preferred them chunky rather than shredded Both sets of tacos included only chopped red onion and plenty of cilantro, though I did sneak a few of the nice jalapeños from the appetizer to add a hit of spice. Don't care for the red onions! The combination of ambiance and food quality, further augmented by excellent service, makes this one of the best Mexica restaurants in the entire Triad. I continue to be amazed at the number of quality dining options available in the Winston/Clemmons area. I look forward to further exploring those option read more

My daughters and I were downtown Winston-Salem walking the streets looking for a fun place for lunch. We strolled right by Tulum Mexican Restaurant. One of the wait staff was relaxing outside. She encouraged us to eat there. She said she loved the food! You could tell by the expression on her face and the tone of her voice that she really did love the food, so in we went! My friend and I planned to go to Tulum Bar and Grill for lunch. I poured over their extensive menu for days. I wanted something different and they have several options that are not the norm. So many in fact, I made notes in my phone. They have tricolor chips that were warm and fresh. I got the Spicy Cucumber Margarita. It was also huge and delicious. Nice spicy rim and it had chunks of cucumber and green peppers mixed in. It was so fresh and I counted it as a salad. The salsa had the right amount of heat and was mostly smooth, no onions (yay!). I ordered the Coconut Shrimp meal that came with 12 HUGE shrimp, white seasoned rice and refied beans with cheese. The shrimp were so plump and cooked perfectly! The dipping sauce had a tropical flare and was 10 times better than the standard orange marmalade. Note: I had missed this item in my menu search, so I still have lots of things to try. My friend got the Tulum Burrito. It was stuffed with scallops, shrimp, rice, black beans etc.. it was covered in a slightly spicy queso. It was huge. We both got to go boxes. Parking is really limited. There is a parking garage across the street but it gets quite pricey. Two to four hours is $9.00. Eek. But you know what, the restaurant was worth it. read more

I loved the margarita options! Size of the margarita glass was large and well worth $14! I got the spicy cucumber marg and i loved it! Also tried the classic like margarita and it was my favorite! Fiancé had tequila shots and they had a variety to choose from. 10/10 We ordered the ceviche (mixed). It definitely needed more lime and salt. 6/10. Free chips and salsa 10/10 yay! I ordered the carne asada and it was a large plate. Tortillas were warm and soft! Draped in cute lights and a few patio tables/chairs, you can spot Tulum from a block away. My friend and I sat at the bar, but there's plenty of regular seating. On a Saturday night, it was steady but no wait for either the bar or regular seating. The bartenders were extremely friendly, fun, and attentive. We started with a Spicy Cucumber margarita which was huge! The picture does not do it justice. We also ordered the Guacamole Fuego (chunky guacamole) and it was DELICIOUS! So much of it and so fresh. My friend ordered the Brochetas De Camarón which were 3 skewers of shrimp, pineapple, onion, and zucchini and were also huge, accompanied by black beans and rice. These are absolutely amazing! The seasoning and flavor were to die for. I ordered the Quesa Birria tacos and these were the best I've ever had. The consommé had a very unique flavor without being too greasy, and the special sauce that accompanied the meal was a nice surprise. I also ordered a side of rice which was extremely tasty. Not too crazy about my experience. My husband enjoyed his Biria tacos, and they did look great. So I guess I just ordered the wrong item. Their complimentary chips were very good, thin like I like them. Salsa was meh...not too much flavor. Now my chicken taco salad ...ugh. To me it was one of smallest I ever seen. I ordered grilled chicken and instead it came with boiled looking stretchy dark meat,,,definitely not grilled. And as you can see in one of my pictures...it turned into a beige bean soup, very unappetizing. I was hoping for a refreshing taco salad, and got a weird been soup bowl with gross chicken.
