I happened to be in the area and stopped here for dinner with a friend of mine. It was a bit early, right at 6pm and the place had a couple of empty tables. The inside is pretty basic, but it was clean. The waitress was super quick to take our order and gave great service. I saw gorditas on the menu, which is awesome because they tend not to be served at most places. So I ordered steak and had a bottle of pineapple coconut milk (with the little fruit chunks). Good stuff. The gorditas were delicious. They had a couple of good sauces on the table too, a jalapeno and a habanero. Both were pretty good, neither were terribly hot. This is my 4th visit in 3 weeks. Please don't judge it by its humble exterior and location -- this is the very best Mexican food I've had in Winston Salem since moving here from the southwest 20 years ago. The aguas frescas are delightfully refreshing. The rice is fluffy. The salsa picante is pleasantly picoso, not dangerously diablo. The bathrooms are immaculate. The service es muy amable. Asada burrito was really good. Healthy portion of meat which had a lot of flavor. Good ratio of rice and beans and plenty of cheese The red and green salsa were both awesome. I prefer the red but the green was also really good. Legitimately some of the best I've ever had. Definitely ordering extra next time. Fries were seasoned well but could have been crispier. Checked this place out recently because I wanted some authentic tacos I got two steak tacos and two lengua. Flavor was good thought it was a good touch to add a few chips as well you don't see that often! The two sauces they provided you with were salsa verde and a spicy red sauce which was my favorite but they both were really good. The service was good the gentleman that took my order was very nice and pleasant to work with. The only reason I didn't leave 5 stars is because the tortilla was too big for the amount of meat and toppings that they put on so it makes for a lot of breading when you bite into it. Other than that the place is good I'll be back so I can try something different I'm sure it will be good! read more

This Mexican restaurant is located in a strip center off the section of W. Clemmonsville Road where the roundabouts drive you crazy.This is a real small place- 5 booths and a long communal table in the center. I came here for the Birria Tacos using goat, but found they now use beef- nuts! I hate it when a plan doesn't come together, and I hate it even more when the plan comes apart. So I ordered my go to dish - Carnitas - I had looked at reviews and pictures of the Carnitas and they looked good.The plate came with refried beans, rice, grilled onions, and a grilled Jalapeño pepper. Nothing I received was at all good, nothing except the rice and pepper looked like pictures I had seen on Yelp! The Carnitas were shredded, much like the beef in Birria, and there was little flavor. The beans were cold and like soup. The pictures I had seen showed whole bean. The rice was barely warm, dry with little flavor. The tortillas were really small, the pepper was hot, my Coke was cold! It is obvious that much has changed in the kitchen here. and not for the good. I was really bummed out about no goat Birria - the first Birria I had was with goat, in Guadalajara in the late 70's - really good stuff. NO SE COME BIEN AQUI! read more

Great food! It's a small little colorful place in a strip mall, so it really feels like you've stepped into Central America! I have had the pollo asado, birria, and pastor tacos. The first two were great, the pastor is not good. ¡Lo siento amigos! I also have had the carne asada tacos and the huarache. The latter is like a big masa Mexican pizza but with beans instead of sauce. Like sopas but way larger and thicker. Delicious! Prices are fair. Pro tip: be sure to look at the chalkboard on the wall, it's half the menu and it's not on the menu they hand you! All sorts of entree-style dishes to choose from. A neighbor got something that looked like a giant schnitzel (idk?) but it looked amazing! Red hot salsa is a 7/10, green salsa is a 2/10. For reference I rank regular Cholula as a 4. We were gestured to sit and our order was taken but others that came in after ordered at the counter. So I guess anything goes! I got carnitas tacos. Carnitas we're a little oily but otherwise good. Hubby got gorditas with steak and he said they were really good. Looked delicious. Kiddo got a plain quesadilla which he loved. It came with a side of rice which he didn't like (surprising if you know my kid!). I tasted the rice and there was something a little different but hubby thought it was fine. This taco shop is one of my favorite places to eat. They have delicious food and very friendly service. I recommend the Birria Tacos or the carne asada sopes. The menus are in Spanish and English so no linguistic problems there. Group seating can be a problem as there is only one large table. Fair warning the red sauce that they bring is quite spicy, but the salsa verde is not. read more

This place is fantastic!! The waiter was wearing a face mask and cleaning the table after other people left, they also have designated tables to comply with the reduced capacity requirements. In regards to food, I went with my 4 y.o. and while I couldn't see anything that would appeal to him on the tacos, the waiter was very flexible and put together a plate with a quesadilla w/chicken & rice. I tried the sopes & tacos al pastor and the flavor was just right. Having grown up in Mexico City with tacos al pastor I have tried & been disappointed many times. I am pretty sure this place is new. I saw one day while traveling through the area I decided to go because I thought it was going to be very authentic. We went for lunch right at 11:00 and while we were there for 45 minutes no one else walk in. I think that they would do really as they are a Taqueria and they speak English which I don't find often but the language factor doesn't deter me. My friend was afraid to go because of the non-English-speaking factor. We are both pleasantly surprised when the menu was both English and Spanish. They have a nice selection of different homemade dishes. I, of course, ordered Carnitas tacos with a side of shredded cheese. Before our meal came, we had a side of cactus salad and pinto beans. When I asked if it was cactus she said yes and that most people don't enjoy it but I did I really think that it was a unique factor to the meal. The tacos were made with homemade tortillas. They are not my favorite Carnitas but they were still very enjoyable. My only complaint is that they didn't have any alcohol and when I asked for water It came in a bottle. When my friend asked for a soda it was also in a can. I still think that they are in the early processes of opening and that this will be fixed later. I would love to get back when they get their liquor license and a actual soda fountain. read more

This is my fourth time to try this place. The first was a real disappointment as they told me they were closed after I walked in. There were other guests dining and the open sign was on and the sign said open till 10pm and it was only 9:15. I tried two more visits and they were closed, but at least they changed their hours, turned off the lights and flipped the chairs upside down this time. So attempt number four. This time at 4:30pm, we'll before closing time. It's bright and cheery inside with bright orange and green walls with piñata like decorations hanging from the ceiling. We ordered tacos, tripe, carne asada, carnitas and chorizo. The chorizo had the most flavor. Tripe was crispy but tasted a little burned. The carnitas and asada were okay, but all of the meats were Luke warm at best. The tortillas were good and they were served with beans and a nopalito salad. We also had sopes which were also good but not great. The horchata was very good. No spectacularly great menu items to speak of, but glad we got to try it. read more

Reading some reviews and friend's suggestions my expectations were high. Unfortunately I did not enjoy at all. I ordered grilled chicken Sopes. They were very bland and the thick tortillas were very greasy and hard. It was impossible to cut with the fork and knife provided. My wife got the barbacoa tacos. She did not eat the tortillas at all. Again very greasy. The taste of the meat was good but she found bones in it. We were definitely disappointed. read more

Stopped in at El Rey's and placed an order to-go, 4 real deal Mexican tacos and 1 sope. On tacos I went with 2 Al Pastor and 2 Goat Birria, both were fantastic. The Goat Birria was awesome, it's shredded goat meat stewed in spices, it has big flavor and is really good, the goat is similar to beef roast. The Al Pastor was great as well, especially with the charred chunks of pineapple in it. Tacos are on corn tortillas topped with onion and cilantro, both red and green sauces that came with the tacos were great also. I also had a Carnita Sope, the little chunks of pork were super good on the little fried corn masa bowl with beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and cheese. The tacos were awesome- more street taco than Tex-Mex taco, with cilantro and onions, plus radishes and lime on the side, very neatly arranged in the take-out box. An exceptional taqueria on the southeast side of Winston Salem, very autentico preparations and an interesting menu with numerous specialties. Lots of detailed care in presentation, like grilled jalapeño and onion on a plate of chicken tacos, along with a small cup of pinto beans and good pico de gallo as well as the usual radishes and onions. Also new and very clean, small but very cheerfully decorated. Definitely family friendly, but if you look forward to a bowl of taco chips to start your Mexican meals this might not be your place.
