I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews for this place. My family stops here every year on our way to vacation. The coffee drinks are delicious. The scones are fresh and tasty. Today I had the apricot and it was lovely. My husband prefers the croissant sandwiches, which are also fresh and tasty. The owner has always been very welcoming and I like to sit there in the morning with a book while my husband is at the gym. It is a little warm there sometimes but today I saw the owner close the doors and turn on the air-conditioning, so I think he's just being thrifty. We also shared a raspberry pastry that was dangerously delicious. I'm going to continue to come here every year because I appreciate real food that was cooked by a real person and didn't arrive at the coffee house in a plastic baggie for a warm-up. read more

Not what I expected by the name of the restaurant. I came from the hotel across the street. I walked in. The display case was empty. It didn't smell like anything fresh was baking. They didn't have any air conditioning, just several fans. I was expecting a cute corner bakery with fresh baked goods. This restaurant was quite the opposite. It is more accurately described as a deli at best. Menu is limited with your choice of bread, deli meat, and the usual lettuce, tomato, and onions. For $12.00, it was a skimpy, very plain turkey croissant sandwich. No creativity or artisan sandwich-making, which was disappointing. If the croissant was baked fresh, I didn't get that sense while eating the sandwich. I chose this place out of convenience but I'm not sure I'd choose this place next time I'm in town. read more

I visited La Boulangerie today, and it was so disappointing. For context, I fondly remember visiting La Boulangerie years (decades) ago, back when the croissants were perfectly flaky and filled with fresh fruit. You had to arrive early, as it was so popular that they sold out quickly. Those days are long gone. There cases are now empty, so you order without being able to see any of the menu items. After ordering, the server goes in the back, pulls a not fresh croissant from a rack, fills it with piped in, non fresh filling, and then microwaves it. Had a lunch meeting a week ago here. It's an ok location. It's just kind of hidden away so I'm sure they would get more foot traffic if it was in a more busy area. Parking is ok. It's right across the street from the Hilton hotel. Inside the cafe is clean for the most part. I'm very picky about the vibe and atmosphere with where I'm eating at. The vibe here was slow. I did however hear that the gentleman who happens to be the owner was working alone that day. I felt bad because it was not a good day to be alone lol. It took awhile to get my sandwich. Their lentil soup is very good. I will have to go back again for that soup. However, I heard their croissants are very good as well and that they make the croissants themselves so I will definitely get a few the next time I go. read more

Have loved this place since little! Highly recommend getting a turkey sandwich with everything, on a croissant. Sure, they aren't exactly like the ones at Costco BUT for sandwiches they are perfect. Being right across from the hotel I thought this would be an excellent place to try. While the owners were very nice on my visit...I couldn't have been more disappointed with the cappuccino. The milk was burnt, leaving a strange...layer??....on top of the milk-coffee underneath. The breakfast sandwich was... just okay? I was really disappointed when I heard her throw it into the microwave to heat it up....it wouldn't have taken too much longer to pop it into an oven to warm up, and I would have gladly waited for that. The croissant was semi-flaky, and overall pretty good, except the microwave really killed the whole thing for me as the cheese wasn't truly warm, except for the middle part.... the egg either for that matter. And the turkey was just your standard deli meat. If I go back, I will try a plain or a chocolate croissant per the previous reviews, and just a plain coffee. Do NOT order the cappuccino. The decor is sad and dated. I truly believe in supporting local, but I really hope this place turns itself around because I will be hard pressed to go back. read more

No dice and no ham and cheese croissants either. The man there says they have fruit croissants available but nothing else. Bottom line folks is that I don't think this is truly a breakfast place and if you expect them to have any products for breakfast, don't. I am sure they do some things well once they do open. I can't understand 3.5 stars for this place. All staff was warm and welcoming, I ordered the 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 salad combo, paid 15 bucks. I can't believe the quality and size for the price. The Caesar salad was simple but had to have been one of the best I've had, really high quality dressing! The turkey sandwich on a croissant with everything was insanely good for the simplicity... you can really taste the quality of the ingredients and even though it was a "half", many restaurants would charge about 15 bucks just for that sandwich! This place was a favorite of my parents 20 years ago. They were so disappointed with how run down the place is now. The place theoretically opens at 8 but there are no pastries available till 9:30 at the earliest. Eventually I got a raspberry croissant and a ham egg and cheese croissant sandwich. I remember when I was a student at UOP I would come to La Bou every now and then on the weekend to get one of their delish raspberry filled croissants. TDF! Their sandwiches are quite good too. The decor is nothing fancy and is rather sparse. Just your typical go up to the counter, place your order and find a seat at one of the metal tables. That is not a bad thing by any means; it's just an observation. Some of the employees are not always real good about cleaning off the tables. I personally do not care to sit at a table with another person's crumbs decorating the table top. But then again, that's just me. ; ) read more

It looks like they've been around sine 83, and they had a clear local following at 2 when I came in. The chicken soup was pretty solid (might have been better if I had liked peas). The bread served with it was great, which is pretty important figuring it is a bakery. Considering this fact, I grabbed a almond croissant/pastry thing on the way out, which was quite excellent. Back in town after 15 years or so and ended up staying across the canal from La Bou. Went in on Saturday for a bit of nostalgia and there was nothing in the cases. Was surprised about that until I asked if there was anything left and the man says everything is left. Just too hot to move out from the racks yet. Got a chocolate and almond croissant for a decent price and headed out. There truly is a difference between what you get at Sbucks and here. While the chocolate croissants may be similar, nothing approaches the flake level of La Bou croissants. Also, their almond croissants are truly unique. I've been coming to La Bou for over 30 years. I've seen its up and downs. My most recent visit ws by far the most depressing. Many yrs ago ths place ws the "IT" spot. Lines were out the door; croissants and pastries warm and flaky; cappuccinos, mochas and real hot chocolate - they weren't a Starbucks thing. They were La Bou. People were always packed in and out of ths little venue. Families such as mine walked frm nearby homes wknd mornings for the La Bou experience. It ws nostalgic. Today it is dated and drab. Unwelcoming and stale. As is the new ownership. Holiday lights still hang outside...it's May! Our croissants weren't warm. Altho they were light, buttery and tasty. They weren't melt in your mouth fresh. I ordered a cappuccino as well. Ths tk some tm. I ws a bit frustrated w/the amt of tm it ws tkng. Curious I wnt bk into the restaurant to investigate. A woman cm a cpl mins after me. Apparently a regular. The owner chose to mk her drink before mine. Lvng me to wait even longer. WTH?!
