Tomorrow is our three monthiversay. There's this French restaurant in Kona that I wanted to eat at for at least 35 years. Well, tonight my husband surprised me and took me there for dinner. I was not disappointed with the meal. It is a family run restaurant. We were greeted by Chris, who is the son of the owner/chef Cindy. Service and the food was pretty awesome. Came here for date night & everything was exquisite. Cindy (the owner and chef) was very attentive to us! We brought in two bottles, so with every dish she suggested pairings and was spot on! The restaurant serves a 3 course price fixed menu for $125 with a choice of 7 appetizers, 6 entrees, and 5 desserts. The entrees our group chose, the veal, duck and scallops were all great. We returned for our second visit this trip. I got the lobster bisque, the scallop special with truffle sauce and rice, and the soufflé for dessert. Hubby got the frog legs, rack of lamb, also with rice and vegetables, and the cheesecake. The lobster bisque had what seemed like sous vide lobster, possibly claw meat, the frog legs were a sort of fricasee with a delicious sauce. Both were delicious and he ate both frog legs, then finished my soup. The soup could have been a little hotter. I noticed this last time with the corn chowder, possibly they have a different idea of serving temp than I do. The main courses were really great. The scallops were perfectly seared and not overcooked. I would not have cared had they been undercooked but they were perfect. The truffle sauce was delicicious. The rack of lamb had the delicious crust that French cooking is known for. It might be mustard and bread crumbs, but that is only my conjecture. So tasty with the crunchy outside and the soft, done to my husband's asking center. We both had the same rice and vegetables. The vegetables were fresh and nicely cooked. Celebrated my birthday with a dear friend. This is food for grownups with a sophisticated palate. Chef owner Cindy has the culinary experience to continue the French bistro legacy begun here years ago. Her artist son Chris has enhanced the cozy intimate setting with his murals. Prix fixe menu allowed us to select different items. Started off with a Manhattan cocktail. I had the escargot appetizer and sweetbreads entree. Sarah had lobster bisque and filet mignon au poivre. We've been here three times since arriving back in Kona...every visit was spectacular! Run by a Mom and Son (with much love) this beautiful intimate elegant room takes you to another place..decorated with sconces and chandeliers and intimate booths it's simply gorgeous!and the food from the lobster bisque spinach salad foie gras chicken , filet mignon , duck cassoulet , ono and the beef bourgeoisie and those amazing desserts everything is sumptuous and delicious..even the bread.. and an excellent wine list with some great finds on it... a very special place to spend in a relaxing soothing atmosphere with some of the best food you'll find in Hawaii! My husband and I past this place and our optometrist is right across the street. We decided to eat here and made reservations for an early Valentine's Day celebration. The ambiance was cozy and the decor made you feel like you were actually in a Paris restaurant. The food..was excellent and delicious! My husband had the lobster bisque and I had the escargot for starters. As for the entree, I had the rack of lamb and my husband had the steak. For dessert, I had the Lilikoi mousse and my husband had something like a chocolate mousse. My wife and I dined at La Bourgogne for the first time on New Year's Eve (December 31, 2025). We had heard about the restaurant from friends for years, and while part time residence in Kailua Kona, we had not secured reservations early enough in the past. We booked early for New Years Eve this last year, and we have to say it may have been one of the best decisions we have ever made. We often dine at restaurants right on the water, just personal preferences plus when you add Magics, Sunset Kai Lanai, Huggo's, Papa Kona, and Kona Inn to the list of excellent places with many great memories. Dining inside is not a personal preference - nor should it be, it is Hawaii. After one time at La Bourgogne, I am fine and want to go there every single trip back to Kona. I did it a disservice by thinking that the best view of waves will ever overcome incredible dining, a quality place, great people, and some of the best food choices you will ever have. This restaurant decorated as if you were in a French chateau or country kitchen, a different feel and a welcome one with the benefit of quiet dining and fewer tables. You will not be disappointed. You will be mad at yourself for not doing it earlier. You walk in and see one room large and well spaced room which is one of the most beautiful of restaurant interiors. Beautiful but not ostentatious, just incredibly warm and comfortable. Cindy is the do all of everything there, and an owner with an incredible resume. Her son Chris is her right-hand person throughout the entire night, in addition to being an accomplished artist whose works decorate the walls and in the upstairs gallery. From the minute you walk in, you are greeted almost as a family. Nice conversations but not forced, not artificial ones we have all had at restaurants or other functions. Cindy and Chris are two of the nicest people you will ever have the pleasure of spending an evening with while they work, you consume, and then try to figure out why you waited so long to get there. Just a graciousness and a friendliness that is rare, particularly these days. And then there are the food items and the wine. Starting with the wine list, it is limited because it is selective; it is excellent without having endless options there challenging an ability to distinguish among them. Cindy I suspect has had a hand in every selection. They compliment the items they serve, but is still wide ranging enough to appeal to everyone, champagne included. The food, it is impossible to know where to begin. You have an on arrival breads with special butter and salami options, and then you move to appetizers which are extraordinary. Everyone was perfect. I had a Tuscan bean soup special, Nancy had lobster bisque, and I think we ate through the bottom of both bowls. Just perfect, and we have had that in places around the world, and I will say it again, it was just perfect. Nancy then had a beef special, served on top of mashed potatoes with vegetables, that she had enjoyed among the top five meals we have ever shared. I was challenged between the duck cassoulet and what was called lavender rabbit. But because I had the Tuscan bean soup, Cindy more or less made the decision that I would not have duck with white beans but instead have the lavender rabbit. I like rabbit but in the past largely have had it cajun style. Well, was brought out like you have a large cauldron, but the top is a pastry cover, and below it you have lamb, vegetables and sauce, and I know it probably takes days to get this dish ready, with just a slight hint of lavender to distinguish it from other options. It was beyond perfect. It was unique, flavorful, not too heavy but definitely a full meal, and just fantastic. We were full, and uncertain if we would be able to get out from the booth, but we went with coffee and the crème brulee for dessert, which bar none was the best crème brulee we have had outside of France. And all through the dinner without ever being too much, Cindy and Chris would come by, we spoke with Chris about his artwork, with Cindy about her history on the island and purchasing La Bourgogne shortly before COVID hit, bad timing but it did allow for redecoration which only enhanced a great setting, the window treatments to make it look like it was night outside without there being windows, and all the accents they have. We left pledging to return, apologized for how long it took to get out of the booth, and on the way to the car committed that we will be back on our next trip, and then the next trip, and when we are there we will go once every three to four weeks, because it is simply one of the best experiences you will ever have. Très bien! After months of driving by and many disappointing meals elsewhere, I came here last week with some girlfriends for a night out. We ordered multiple appetizers, entrees, and two desserts to share. Everything was wonderful! Classic no fuss French dishes perfectly executed. My favorite was the lamb chops, but both my friends fought over the veal chop. The mushroom soup which is not on the menu, is creamy and so flavorful. The owner Cindy came out and explained each dish and also offered drink paring options with both cocktails and wine. We felt very taken care of and spoiled! We loved it so much we made another reservation for later this month! I definitely recommend dining at La Bourgogne and to make reservations well in advance! This small cozy restaurant near Kona was probably one of the best places to eat i have ever experienced. It is run and owned by a mother and son team who are both amazingly talented. Cindy, the owner and head chef is friendly, open and obviously extremely knowledgeable about French cuisine and fine wines. Her son, Chris, our waiter, was equally friendly and courteous... and also happens to be a very talented painter (his paintings hang in the restaurant). As an artist i am very rarely impressed by artists i meet, but Chris was an exception. We even bought one of his prints. And the best part of the evening was the food- easily the best meal my, and my partner, have ever had... and we're both in our 60s. It was cooked and presented perfectly, and was the best steak, fish and dessert either of us could remember having tasted. It is definitely s ' must go to' restaurant should you want a lovely French meal while in Hawaii. It was not cheap but well worth the price. read more

When you first arrive the outside isn't super inviting, you hardly notice La Bourgogne tucked away just off the highway, but honestly that's one of the things i love about it! tip: Make a reservation. Their hours are minimal, i think 5-8pm, so plan ahead. The menu is stellar, most things made from scratch. fresh sauces and pasta, which was divine and i'm VERY picky with my pasta. Order the lobster pasta it's amazing. French onion soup was stellar as well. This is a family owned restaurant with a semi fine dining vibe. The son was our waiter and the mother owner and chef also came to our table to see how things were and to see if we needed any suggestions. Great food, great service, pleasantly quiet ambiance. I'm baffled by these great reviews. Maybe we went on an off night? Who knows? But I do know this restaurant was purchased by the current owner right before COVID so when they say it's been around since 1981, take that with a grain of salt. Apps: The French Onion soup was flavored with vanilla to make it unique. Cool. I'm amenable to interesting flavors. But there was so much vanilla in it, it was a punch in the face. Very weird taste. I got the special butternut squash soup, which was pretty good, if one note. It needed some sort of additional element to liven it up. The baked Brie was very good. Entrees: the market fish was cooked well and the sauce went well with it. The scallops were terrible. Overcooked to the point of rubber and didn't have the abductor muscle removed, which is a weird texture. There was also sand/grit in two of them. Dessert: the lillikoi cheesecake mousse has no taste at all and was topped with canned whipped cream. Very strange. Why? Why not make it taste like the main ingredient? Why not make your own whipped cream? We considered mentioning some of these issues too the chef/owner but she had already stated (to us, her customers) her irritation with other reviews she'd received about portion sizes and such so we were not comfortable giving criticism if it would be taken with such irritation. Also, why are you talking to customers about your bad reviews? I would never, ever consider going back. And I highly recommend visitors to the island steer clear. It's way too expensive to eat such terrible food. read more

It's a completely immersive experience: you enter a restaurant that looks like a Burgundy maison. French country with lovely dishes, but Filet Mignon is also on the menu and is excellent. The current chef has owned this place since 2020 and does a great job with flavorful food, a refreshed dining room interior, and excellent customer service. Imagine a fancy French restaurant where the chef/owner actually is tableside to discuss the dishes, answer any questions, and take your order! Her sons are cooking and serving too, making the whole experience feel super welcoming. The menu offers a mix of French and Italian dishes. The special on the day we arrived was spaghetti and meatballs, but not just any meatballs. These use the highest quality mixture of ground meat. Drinks are well made. Service is prompt and very cordial. Dinner was delicious. Dessert was great. This is a small place and reservations, especially with reduced capacity during COVID times, can be hard to get. I think this is only the second time I've given 5 stars in several years of Yelp reviews. This was the best dining experience we've had in ages from start to finish. I've been anticipating dining at a French restaurant for years, they certainly aren't around every corner. We tried to make reservations here last year but didn't realize you need to book weeks in advance. It's a small dining room and they don't book all the tables at once. It's an intimate setting with very attentive service. Cindy the owner/chef and her sons love what they do and it definitely shows. You feel like a guest in their home not a patron in a restaurant. The interior is a nice surprise, so don't judge by the industrial exterior. It's tasteful, semi-formal yet cozy with the dim lighting and French bistro decor . We started out with a couple of unique tasty cocktails and the special appetizer of the evening, caviar blini's w/lobster. Must mention upon seating there is lovely fresh baked breads, whip butter and some crudités, such a nice touch. The appetizer was my first experience w/caviar and wow...for being such small bites they truly were a flavor bomb explosion! Simply delightful. For entrees we ordered the foie gras w/scallops w/cherry balsamic and hubby had the sous vide strip steak w/Cabernet sauce. Meanwhile we were thoroughly enjoying the cocktails, bread, coffee (incredible too) and being catered to by Cindy and son. Our meals come out and what a gorgeous presentation on both plates. I've been dying to try foie gras for ages, now I understand the appreciation. Along with bone marrow this is the most decadent food I've ever tasted!! I can see why you only get a small portion, rich and sinful. The toasted baguette and balsamic bring it all together for that perfect bite. My husband's steak was cooked to ultimate perfection, melt in your mouth accompanied by the French version of scalloped potatoes, green beans were also delicious and he doesn't like beans. Cindy was sweet in giving him fancy rice to try since he said he doesn't care for a lot of veggies. We were in 7th heaven with everything. Even though we're we're completely satisfied we knew we had to order the popular chocolate soufflé that comes w/grand marnier anglaise poured into the center. How could you not order?? The son comes out and offered to do the special presentation, pretty impressive!! Omg, yet another incredible experience!! I was a bit surprised it wasn't sweeter but that was fine by me as I don't care for really sweet desserts. It was enough for 2-4 people to share. This was just a wonderful experience for my 2 children, my wife, and myself. I so much appreciated the family run business and the attention to detail. If you are a fan of delicious and well orchestrated food, you would appreciate La Bourgogne. The cassoulet of local HI raised rabbit with the puff pastry crust was delicious. Ossobuco was inspired, reserved, and very satisfying. Hawaii island Kampachi is a beautiful fish, raised by aquaculture in the ocean waters off Kona, and was my 7 and 11 year olds selection. I read nearly every single review about this place, and wondered why some were so disparaging. I can tell you why in one word: bias. This is a woman chef cooking phenomenal French food in Hawaii, and that makes some people simply lose their guano. Everything was perfect, from the best cosmo on the Big Island (my husband loved his margarita too) to amazing baked brie with crisp apple slices, to the excellent duck (the skin and meat were perfect) to the lilikoi mousse cheesecake. The proportions were large (the brie and duck especially). I was stuffed. Because I was worried about the spiciness of the sauce with the duck, Chef Cindy made me rice with pesto that was amazing. I was concerned that having rice with pesto would be strange so she also gave me a kind of a blackberry compote as well, but the pesto was wonderful. So was the compote: not too sweet. It was thoughtful to be given two choices. We will definitely come back. We thought the price was quite reasonable for what we got. We ordered a ton of food and left super full - so maybe this can help you as a benchmark Scallop salad: Nice balance of savory and sweet. Possibly a little small for the price, but still nice. Baked Brie: simple, classic, but great. The pastry was nicely cooked. Veil Normandy: The dish tied together nicely. The brandy and shallots made it a little sweet without overpowering. One negative was that the veil was slightly chewy, but the flavors were all there. My husband really enjoyed the way the potatoes were prepared (the word is totally slipping my mind but they were thinly sliced and stacked but did not have cheese). Lobster fettuccine: Very rich and creamy dish. The home made pasta was great and there was a good amount of lobster added. Left me in a bit of a food coma - only order if you are very, very hungry. Chocolate grand marnier soufflé: You have to commit to this a bit earlier in the meal because it takes 20 min to make, but make the choice! The soufflé was super light and airy. The chocolate wasn't too overpowering with the creme anglaise. The creme anglaise had the perfect hint of orange from the Grand Marnier, which balanced the dish out. Would order again! read more

Wow, just had a wonderful birthday dinner here. Chris and his mom-the chef and sommelier, went out of their way to make our evening special. They even decorated the the table for my birthday! It was hard to believe we're in Kona which is not known for high class food. The food was memorable (on par with any French restaurant I've been to including in France). We had the baked Brie and frog legs as appetizers and the Lavender Chicken and Sweetbreads for entrees. They had some excellent French wines and I had Lillet as an after dinner drink. If you aren't able to go to France, La Bourgogne, in Kailua Kona, is a sublime alternative. Chef Cindy is passionate about preparing authentic French food and as she and her son, Chris, greet you to their French table describing the offerings you feel as though you're in their home. From beginning to end it was so enjoyable. The French onion soup is the best we've ever had. The scallop salad was a treat, my Veal Normandy was mouth watering and the New York steak with Bernaise was the real deal! Chef cares about her wine pairings and it was true, our meals 'sang' with her recommendation! It's challenging but try to save room for the profiteroles AND Pot de Creme. The food is delicious but we are not happy with the Pre Fixe menu they started a couple of years ago. We don't eat dessert and I like to order 2-3 appetizers, instead of an entree. We use to eat here 2 or 3 times a year and tried it again recently but we won't be going back, unless they go back to a la carte. read more

The reason for the review is how snotty the person on the phone was as if I was an idiot for not knowing 11 days wasn't enough. I was in the industry for 25 years ALL positions. Hokus on Oahu, Chez Panisse, Aqua, Gary Danko in SF, not to mention I cheffed a restaurant Downtown Oakland next to the Fox theater. I would never allow my staff to talk this way to customers, I don't care how full we were. Too bad because there really isn't much on the island, but I can't support a place that treated me that way. read more
