We came to La Provence a couple of years back right after watching the sunrise at Haleakalā. Pro-tip: head here straight down the mountain right when they open because their pastries sell out fast! That morning was the very first time I ever had a Kouign-Amann (or "Queen Amann" as my phone loves to autocorrect it, which honestly fits because it's royalty ), and it completely ruined me for all others. It set an impossibly high standard for every single one I've tried since! The flaky, buttery, caramelized layers were pure perfection. We didn't get a chance to try their savory menu offerings, but I can absolutely speak for the pastries - the others we tried were very good too, but that Kouign-Amann completely topped it off. We haven't been back since that trip, but I cannot wait to check them out again next time we visit Maui. If you're doing the early morning Haleakalā run, this is an absolute must-stop! read more

I lived in France for a few years and I want to say that La Provence with a small counter space for bread, croissants and pastries and outdoor seating with beautiful upcountry views is truly a French café! They are not faking it, unlike these other places that throw up a sign with some French words and pretend they know how to bake a croissant. Everything on the menu is exactly what you would get at a village brasserie or cafe - eggs Benedict (the hollandaise sauce!) Nutella crepes, and sandwiches. Super delicious! In addition to usual favorites croissants and pain au chocolat, the pastries include the classics from France and American favorites like strawberry short cake. La Provence is owned and run by a French father - daughter team. The cafe is only open from 8AM - 2PM. Bread, pastries and coffee are available from 8AM and brunch / lunch starts at 10:30AM. Horrible! Did not even stop to order anything because the experience left a foul taste in my mouth. Customer service was so rude, some foreign (not Hawaiian) lady behind the counter saw us waiting outside the door to get seated and told us that breakfast isn't served until 10:30 and told us, "look at the sign it says it right there". We had looked up the hours online prior and there was no indication that breakfast was served @ 10:30. Only that they open at 8am. We were also standing there deciding if this is somewhere we even wanted to dine considering the place looked dirty and not up kept in any way, shape, or form. This interaction alone told me that I will not be giving my service to this establishment. Which is sad because I live in Kula and there are not many breakfast options available around the area. We did not have lunch here (which looked pricey) but I was excited to stop and pick up some of their famous baked items. We got a fruit custard tart, chocolate mac nut tart, and lemon meringue. I'm sad to say I was disappointed in all of them. The main issue is I did not like the pastry. My mom lives in France so I've likely eaten my weight in pastries across France over the years and I was super excited to find a French patisserie in Maui, alas, I apparently did not. It was just dense. Not buttery or flavorful or even really interesting at all. The lemon meringue was probably the best, only because the lemon had good kick. The other two were forgettable. I've been living in Kula for the past six months, and I've stopped by this place several times. Unfortunately, it's always closed when I visit, and the hours listed on Apple Maps aren't accurate--they never open at 7am as shown, but rather at 9:09am. The pastries here are wonderful, and the coffee is quite decent. This spot has so much potential, but it seems like they haven't quite put enough effort into the appearance or advertising. Customer service could be better, and the bathrooms weren't as clean as I'd like. Overall, it's a decent option if you're not too particular -- but honestly, the star of the place was the quiches. read more

We loved this beautiful little place after a morning on Haleakala. We stopped in intending to have lunch but didn't realize on Sundays they only have a brunch menu. So we adjusted our expectations and still had some delightful food. I got the crab cake benedict - which they brought out wrong at first and the waitress was SO overly kind about making it right when it wasn't that big of a deal. So definitely kudos on the customer service. Everything is served with a fresh salad with a bright citrus dressing that my husband and I both really enjoyed. My benedict had tons of flavor and the amount of crab was a great portion size. We sat out on the garden patio and it was just overall a lovely experience with the island breeze blowing through. Considering half the menu is Eggs Benedict, I expected a perfect one. I ordered the bacon, tomato, and avo benedict. Unfortunately the poached eggs were underdone and the potatoes that came with the dish were overcooked. The lilikoi vinaigrette that comes on the side salad was not anything special. Food was just okay, but I don't think for its price at almost $26 is worth it. Pretty views from the outdoor seating area! I think the "please wait to be seated" sign should be removed if they tell you to just sit yourself anyway. The two girls taking orders were fine. I'm a senior caretaker and I was taking my 93 year-old senior to lunch. One of her favorite places is LA PROVENCE but unfortunately for us today the owner/cook was unhappy that I had ordered the veggie sandwich without the cheese or the sauce and just asked for vinaigrette unfortunately, when I received the sandwich , it came with mayonnaise on it, the server was very apologetic and when she went to advise the owner/cook, he started slamming the pots and pans and said he refuses to make another sandwich and when she was explaining this to us without regard the owner/cook rudely slammed on his bell about a next order up interrupting her conversation with us, so needless to say the nice outing for lunch with my senior client turned out to be a complete disaster all because the owner/cook refused to make another sandwich. I don't know about you, but when you plan something special for a senior person who hardly gets out of her house, other than going to doctors appointments and it gets dismissed and shot down by an angry person it's pretty heartbreaking. She had to sit there and eat her lunch with a confused and shocked look on her face while I was punished. So if you ever go to this restaurant, don't ask for any substitutions or dare to return anything! Or it's no soup for you..... read more

We arrived and the woman behind the counter told us she would serve at tables as soon as she was done servicing walk up..no apologies, just a reminder that breakfast would stop being served in 15 minutes. we waited at table and had no idea what's next, we saw another table in similar situation. this same woman served me some take out pastries, and very 'unpleasant' in the moment, and even moreso when she arrived at table 20 minutes later and told us they were out of their best seller eggs benedict crab cakes, again could care less that we. waited this long.. basic point is how rude and unpleasant this experience was. If you're craving real-deal French pastries on Maui, or just looking for a treat upcountry, La Provence in Kula is the spot. Get there early for the best selection, bring Venmo, cash, or a check (NO credit or debit cards), and be prepared to wait in line....worth it, most definitely. All the baked goods are as delicious as they are beautiful, but I especially love the quiches and the pain au chocolat. I haven't been there for lunch (yet), so can't comment on those menu items. We were in the area and you know we had to stop for a Salad Nicoise (with grilled Mahi) and hubby got Mahi sandwich. My apple tart was the perfect ending to my lunch. The Filo crust was light, airy, and crunchy. It was the perfect bed for the perfectly cooked apples with jam. Nothing beats a bakery that makes its own breads and desserts. Freshness can't be beat! One of my fav spots in Maui - we stopped by after riding horses @ Thompson ranch. Plenty of seating options, we did have to run and get cash though. Delicious bennies and crepes, they were low on some ingredients when we arrived around 12:30pm (low on bacon, beef, spinach), but substituted for other options, like offering avocado & toast instead of spinach. Would definitely recommend the crab eggs bennie, it was soooo good. I've always loved their baking items and lunch offerings so when I heard they were now serving dinner on some nights I jumped at the opportunity to try them. There were three of us and we tried a good selection of menu options. All in all the food was very good and portions were not overwhelming. The green peppercorn gravy was great, on the lamb and the steak. We all had the almond pear tart with whipped cream to top it off and left very full and satisfied. It's a friendly family run restaurant and bakery so if you're a regular customer they'll remember you. Plenty of parking in their own lots. Nice view. Good service. Food was decent, but the customer service was absolutely horrendous. Horrible way to run a business. Some items on the menu were nearly double or nearly triple of what the Google menu said. I started by looking at their google menu online to see how much crepes were. According to the google menu, the total for our order would have came out to $33.40. So I call at 9:50 AM. Owner picks up the phone and tells us breakfast doesn't start till 10:00 AM in a tone that is slightly rude. I call back around 10:10 AM. I order my food, and he tells me that the food will be ready in 20 minutes. Keep in mind, he doesn't tell me the total for the order, this will be important for later. I pick up our food, and the total comes out to $71.55, which is nearly double of what their Google menu told me. I pay (my biggest mistake as I should have just refused the food), I start questioning menu prices because they clearly do not match. The lady working there hands me their menu, which again, lists the items as nearly double of what they were online. I am going to list what the Google menu listed vs. the actual price. Eggs benedict bacon, avocado, tomato: $12.95 vs. $22.95. Crepe salmon & spinach: $12.95 vs. $22.95. Lemon Crepe: $3.75 vs. $9.95. Cinnamon Crepe: $3.75 vs. $9.95. Keep in mind, for the savory crepes I ordered , if you look at another yelp review photo of the menu, it says that it is $19.95, but told me it was $22.95, either she wasn't being specific, did not have the menu prices right in her head, or the menu is outdated. At this point, the only way to ensure you will get accurate menu pricing is if you show up to the restaurant in person and order directly off of their menu. The fact that I have to look at another Google review photo of the menu just to get accurate pricing is a little ridiculous, they do not even have an actual website to reference to begin with. I asked her the reason for the pricing discrepancy, and she said it was because the Google prices were not accurate and it would cost them some money to change the prices online. So I ask her to kindly let the owner know that the customers who are ordering online are paying double without even realizing it. She replies with "I'm the one who actually runs all the online stuff." Last time I checked, the goal of restaurants was customer retention. I was charged nearly double of what was posted online, and the employee there seemed pretty unapologetic and there was no accountability happening. I don't think they realize that not wanting to spend a few bucks to change their menu prices is actually hurting their business, rather than helping it. I wouldn't be so upset if I wasn't greeted with rude customer service after the fact that I had paid nearly double. I went home today feeling disgruntled and feeling like I got scammed a little bit, even if I didn't actually get scammed in reality. My father decided to follow up on call with them to confront them about the situation after hearing about it, the phone conversation went a little something like this: Owner: "Hello?" Father: "Hello I am calling about-" Owner: "Speak up I can't hear you." Father: "Hello I am calling about the price discrepancy on your Google menu." Owner: "We don't control that." Father: "Do you want me to send you what I'm looking at? It says right here your crepes are $12.95. What's your phone number so I can show you?" Owner: "We don't have fax." Father: "What's your phone number so I can send it to you?" Owner: "You can't text this number, it's a restaurant phone." Father: "What's your email?" Owner: "Why would I give that to you. I don't know you." Father: "Fine, if that's the case, then we'll take it to Yelp." Owner: "Well why don't you go and do that then." *Sarcastic Aloha* *End call* So that leads us to where we are now. SO RUDE. I'm not even exaggerating, that is how the call went. If you still want to give your business to these people, that is fine, but I personally will not be. Pro-tip: Cash only and even though masks requirements were lifted, they still require masks inside their store. I'm fairly certain there's no indoor dining so either eat it on the go or eat on their patio. Highlights: I was shocked to find such an amazing bakery here and for such reasonable prices! The pear tart was amazing with a really strong almond flavor and crispy texture. The sticky bun was also surprisingly tasty with a light sugar crumb topping and a really moist structure. I'd definitely go back to try more options! Lowlights: The mango blueberry cake was terrible honestly - it was so stodgy in the middle that I thought it was raw. I never throw away baked goods, but I really couldn't eat more than a bite. We got a rare early start this morning and arrived to find a looong line out the door, but was pleasantly surprised to find parking nearby. We were glad that the line was for takeout and found a table right away - and felt even more welcomed when Tia read our minds and served us our absolute favorite Croque Monsieurs - enough to share with friends of ours who are visiting from WIsconsin Delicious and fresh baked treats, personal and friendly service in a relaxing environment are worth the drive and any amount of wait! read more

We got a Quiche Lorraine & a Quiche Aux Épinards - both were really good. The Spinach quiche had tomatoes, spinach, goat cheese. I think it would have been even better with some bacon as well! The quiche Lorraine was ham & cheese. Very good. Forgot to even take a picture! On the sweet side, we got a raspberry roll & tarte aux cerises. The tarte was really good! They use sour cherries, but the overall flavor is rich and multilayered. I grew up with cherry pie made of sour cherries, so this was really delectable. The roll was a little firm, but the raspberry flavor really stands out. Would love to come and visit again! There's a cute little patio with lawn chairs & umbrellas. So disappointed with our experience this morning. It's Mothers Day, and we thought we would treat ourselves to some pastries and coffee. We went down to La Provence at 8:30am, since hours reflected online say they open at 8am. They don't open until 9am. No problem, it's a nice day. We wait outside for 30 minutes, in good company. Downfall, we waited outside right next to multiple piles of dog poop and covered flies. It was right at the entrance to the gate. At 9:01am we go inside, first in line and was surprised that half the selection wasn't available. It's bakery items, I get they have to bake them. I guess we just assumed, being a holiday, they would be stocked and ready to go at opening. Since nothing we went for was there, we had to pick new items. Which was fine. We were inside maybe 2 minutes... if that and the old man owner yells from the back HURRY UP PEOPLE ARE WAITING OUTSIDE. It's possible it was like 1 minute. It was so rude. We are 100% aware that they are waiting outside, we just waited outside for 30 minutes next to the dog poop, came in to mostly empty shelves, and now we're trying to decide what items to buy. It just rubbed me the wrong way and I would never in good conscience be able to refer a location that makes you feel uncomfortable and unappreciated. Note: Apparently under new ownership since my visit a few months ago. First and only time I'll visit included being sat outside near a garbage can that had clearly been sitting for more than a day, as it stunk and there were maggots crawling out and on the ground, even beneath our table by our feet. I notified the staff and they switched our table and dealt with the trash, but it was hard to overcome my disgust. I still stayed for the Benedict. It was sub par. The fresh whipped cream on the other meal was good. But ewww, no one should have to deal with maggots while eating. read more

Just an unpleasant place. I live nearby and would love good food options in area...unfortunately the service here is just horrendous. After going there once I just had no desire to step foot in there again. They make you feel like they are doing you a favor by serving you. And now they've successfully pushed out the BBQ food truck that was across the street. Keep in mind the hours were very different and these places arent really competing...they just can't help but be jerks. Ironically the last time my wife got food from this place it was because she was waiting for her order from the BBQ truck. We won't be going back and will actively tell others to avoid this place. If you are looking for other options in Kula and want to support small businesses, try Morihara Store, 808 Bistro, Maui Slice, or Grandma's Coffee House. Make sure you have a mask. You can't enter the bakery and have to use the side window to order. I wanted to see all the pastries so it was a bummer I couldn't see them bc I didn't have a mask. Seating is outside. You don't need a mask to have a server come to your table. They don't let you order food until 9:15a but you can get pastries a head of time. Food I had a chocolate croissant and it was amazing! Perfectly buttery and flaky and soft and oh I wish I had one now!! I had the turkey and Brie crepe. It was also amazing! So savory! My friends all ordered the crab crepe. The crepes come with a decent sized salad. I ordered a hazel nut latte and it was good. I expected fancy foam art or at least smooth foam. It was not what I expected but still good. The service here is not the fastest, so make sure you have time to spare. I would give them 5 stars, but I think their mask policy is stuck back in 2020.
