I've had some of the best pizza in NYC and I can confirm that La Calavera Pizza has that real authentic flavor you're looking for. The sauce, THE DOUGH, the cheese all of top quality. I hear they have added sandwiches to the menu and I can only imagine how delicious that bread is. The woman working FOH was so patient and kind and the chef was super friendly as well. Location is weird. It's on the side road of a busy street. We walked to other side to go to the gas station across the street and my wife almost got hit by a car. Drink selection here is limited. A few bottle drinks of jarritos priced at 3 dollars made me decline any drinks. The customer service was good she did a job explaining the menu and I was able to get half and half which I was appreciative however I was disappointed by the food. I ordered the bbq chicken pizza solely based on the added addition of cilantro expecting a unique flavor, but it was hidden by the other flavors. The diced chicken was not tender the flavors were there however the textures caused me to spit it out. Not a fan. The la banderas pizza was visually unappealing. It was a big glob of cold tomato sauce on a pizza. Wasn't good. The seating was small three tables and a dried plant. The cheesesticks while flavorful were too bready. Too much bread. (Didn't add any on the 1.5 I ate because I was so hungry) Don't really need crushed red pepper unless you want to take it up a notch. Took me about 15-20 to get door to door home with the pie, but was still warm enough to devour a slice and half, and be content. The rest to come.. Crust has a great crisp on the outside, with a nice chew on the inside. Spicy sauce has a good kick, not too much, but you know it's there. Great flavor. She approached him and rudely said " I don't like being summoned" we should have walked out then and there! We did not because our daughter was meeting us to pick up our granddaughter. The restroom is located in the behind the cash register and then down a hallway. The cheese pizza was $10 with an additional pizza. We ordered one meat lovers and one pepperoni along with the cheese. Our bill was over $100 and the pizza was the worst I have ever had! The only reason I give a one star rating is it is required by yelp to complete the review! The concept of this place is really close, it's a house turned into a restaurant. Ordered over the phone, friendly service, and was ready when we got there. The pizza was kool, I personally prefer more cheese on my pizza. The crust and bacon was the best parts, plus the HONEY! I've never had honey with my pizza but they changed my life because now it's a must for me. The have us hot honey and regular honey. The hot honey is HOT, fyi. A 3.5 star experience if Yelp did half stars... I was very hopeful for this neighborhood pizza place and excited to try it after reading some very positive reviews. They do seem to use very high quality ingredients and offer 3 crust options - white, whole wheat, and gluten free. The white is most similar to a Mellow Mushroom style crust, whereas the whole wheat was a bit more dense (too dense for me); the GF is kind of focaccia-like. All were fine; none exceptional. Sauce and cheese were flavorful. I noticed that a lot of the reviews were with vegan cheese, but we went with regular mozzarella. The toppings, especially for the price, are where they really failed. They use Spotted Trotter meats, which is a nice touch, but... for ~$30 per pizza, I expect more than one tiny pepperoni per slice - especially on a pizza called the Carne. If you like a thicker hand-tossed style cheese pizza only, this is probably the place for you. They have 2 sparse tables inside what seems to be a small, older house converted to restaurant. It is mostly a takeout place, IMO. Service was very nice by phone and in person. read more

She likes vegan cheese and vegan toppings and I'm more of a dairy cheese & meat kind of pizza guy. They had multiple options for both of us. We opted for slices - their square grandma pie style situation. I think they were about $3.50 each plus about 75 cents per topping. Out the door with tip, we were right at about $20. The flavor right off the bat was incredible. Tangy sauce, melty cheese, crispy crust... delicious! I can't believe we hadn't been to this joint before now. This pizza is so good. We've had it twice: 1. Meat *haters* pizza - a supreme pizza with vegetarian sausage and vegetarian pepperoni. It was so good, the crust is incredible, and it's just such a fun concept and unique for vegetarians to have a pizza like this available. We also got the canelitas (dessert) and at the time it came with pumpkin pie pudding dip which was SO GOOD, hard to believe it was vegan. 2. Next time we got a special limited pizza, the lemon pizza with thinly sliced lemons, red onion, lemon olive oil. It was so good and unique. We got the canelitas again with peanut butter pudding dip, didn't like it as much as the pumpkin dip but I think they probably change the dip flavors a lot so I'm going to see what's next. Only downside is the small ordering window, only available 4 hours a day, 4 days a week!! But totally worth it. read more

While this pizza was not perfect the things it did right were extraordinary. The only negative would be I wish is was saucier. I turned my grill up full blast and reheated the slice for 1 min 32 1/2 seconds to creat that fresh out the oven texture. We also had the whole wheat, a notoriously thirsty dough, that may have soaked up some of that tomato saucy goodness. Flavor was top notch and the ingredients chosen for toppings are indulgently on point and nutritious. Enough hemp seeds to offset the price of the entire pie! An other good sign is there was a third pie that was full of veggies that we finished before I realized I should take a picture! Overall I would say you need to check it out, especially if you are not only looking for a non cheese pizza option but a healthier pizza option. read more
