I visited during dinner time on a Saturday and was surprised that it wasn't busy at all! My party shared the LC nachos and we each ordered 2 tacos. The nachos were really good! The chips are super crispy and is loaded with lots of toppings. I ordered the Pollo Frito ($7.95) and Pork Belly Al Pastor ($8.25). I enjoyed the Pollo taco more. Both tacos are loaded. I give this place a 5 star rating. Firstly i ordered guac and chips along with a fish taco. WOW it was so delicious. The fish was juicy and well battered. The guac was fresh and they made it in front of me. The server was so sweet and friendly. It felt like i was talking with a friend. I came with around 8 people and we split the bill at the end so it was less than 5 dollars per person. The prices were amazing and i recommend you to go for taco tuesdays as they have the best deals and only 3$ per taco. The environment was cultural and the pillows were comfortable. La Carnita hands down has the best tacos in the city! Each location I've been to, the food NEVER disappoints. One thing I really have to shout out is their nachos! Wow! I would consider myself a bit of a nacho snob lol as I've had my fair share of ordering nachos from pretty much every restaurant I've ever been to that sells nachos. And I must say, these were literally the best tasting nachos I've ever had! The carne asada tacos were probably my favourite, but again, literally everything I had was delicious. While the staff were all friendly and great overall, we didn't like the way our tacos came out. Instead of giving everyone a platter of what they ordered, all tacos were grouped together so we were left to figure out who got what, which, in a large group became a bit chaotic. Because of this, four people realized they were missing at least 2 tacos each. To get those missing tacos now, was over an hour wait. This could've all been avoided if, like what normally happens at a restaurant, you are served individually what you ordered, on your own plate. The missing tacos were comp'd which was appreciated, but again, it's such a quick fix so it can be avoided in the future. La Carnita is easily one of the most overrated restaurants in Toronto. It's overpriced and mediocre, living off of it's Instagrammability (yup, I made that word up). The rose and red sangria's tasted the same; both were watered down. The nachos - while not horrible - left much to be desired. The tacos - supposedly a standout - were a huge disappointment. At $6-7 a pop, you'd expect much more. A warm tortilla at the very least...mine was cold. Service is also spotty. You'll see your waitress once every 30 minutes if you're lucky. Came here at opening time with a friend and were seated by a young gentlemen. Been wanting to try this place out for some time and was excited to finally try it especially after looking at the menu the day before. What I'd like to first say is that I would've given 5 stars if it weren't for the service by our waiter. He was nice however he really didn't provide much details on the items we had asked about. For a minute I thought, is he a busboy and just covering for someone until they come because it seemed like he didn't care to be there at all. Will give him the benefit of a doubt as we got there right at opening, but opening is at 4pm. Also, it was a scorcher out so I would recommend to at least offer some ice or serve cold water to those dining in the patio. As for ambience, as nice as the patio is, if you want to have enjoyable conversations with your party without having to yell over traffic, I'd recommend eating inside. But now for the good stuff!! Tuna Ceviche Tostada - This was delicious!! Haven't had ceviche in a minute so I was looking forward to this. I could eat at least 3 of these. 5/5. Here's what we had: 1. Mexican chorizo taco 9/10 - I really liked this taco. All the flavours blended very well, not making it too spicy or bland. 2. Carne Asada taco 7/10 - this one was good, but not great. I think it could use a little bit more spice. 3. Pollo frito taco 7/10 - my friend had this and enjoyed the peanut sauce they used but d'audit could have been more spicy. 4. Mexican style corn 3/10 - I love Mexican corn on the cob and had great expectations when I ordered it. However the corn wasn't up to par with other restaurants or even the simple recipes I've used to make it at home. I went here yesterday at the Eglinton location and I am viewing some of the reviews and they seem to have the same opinion as I do. They call themselves a Mexican restaurant,,,anything ..but. The server was so rude. I ordered a taco which looked more like a rice cake for $8.00. I was starving of course after eating that and I ordered the taco plate $15.00. Nothing authentic about this place. First of all, I went with a group and had no knowledge the tip was going to be included in my bill so when it came I was almost paying $10.00 for a $41.00 bill. I told the server I was unaware of the tip being automatically added, which they write conveniently in very fine print at the bottom of the food options which no one would ever see !!! After the server finished arguing with me saying that he told me I could cancel my first taco if I did not like it (which I never heard him say that) he finally took the tip off my bill and I was able to leave my own tip from my service and opinion of the food and servers which was not great. We got the corn and while it looked pretty, the corn itself was dry and didn't seem fresh. As another yelp member said I think that La Carnita does so well because of their "instagramability" it's not that special of a place to be over charging, tacos are the smallest size you can get them in the city. They should realistically be 2$ because they are a bite size, however they change 6-8$. The drinks are well made but they are $14+ is a bit much. I went with my girlfriend one day and we got appetizers ie. the corn + drinks and we we enjoyed it. But you can easily spend like 200$ per person to be satisfied and full. I had the worst experience dealing with the management at this location. I would never recommend booking this place to anyone. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I booked what I thought would be a seamless private event at the 'good fortune' area of this restaurant. It was an absolute nightmare. There was a minimum spend that was needed to be reached (4k). I brought 60 friends. The bar was serving drinks as normal. I bought nearly 1k worth of prepaid food and spent a few more hundred on two rounds of drinks for my friends. This location had the audacity to tell me that my group only spent ~900$ when 4 of my friends alone showed me their bank statements equaling 400$. Mind you, there was no food service all night other than the prepaid food I had ordered. None of my friends were asked by servers if they would like to order anything, and when a few friends asked me concerningly how they could order I chased after a few staff members asking if someone could take order and provide menus. More than half of my friends didn't know that you could even order because the food service was that terrible. Around 10:30pm the supervisor on charge (Dakota) updated me where we were at for the minimum spend and I again expressed that no one was taking orders. Nothing changed after this. I tried to order food myself around 11:30 and was told last call had ended already. For some reason I was never told that last call happened??? I raised this concern with Dakota and she said she personally went to each table to let people know about last call. Funnily enough the 10 people that were staying with me that night DID NOT GET TOLD. Also, as the host dishing out 2300$ by the end of the night, why wasn't I informed? Later in the evening, obviously were short of the minimum spend considering no one was offered food and no one was told about last call. We were told we could spend 3300 instead of 4k, which I thought was still unfair considering the poor food service provided. Dakota told me I could speak with Eddie and he may be able to do something for me. So I paid the 2059 + 230 I had spent on drinks. Essentially, I had spent an extra 1k for NOTHING. If I had the opportunity to spend on food, I would have taken this option instead. I have done private events before with less people and with same minimum spend. We are never 2k short, but equally I have never had I had this poor service..... When speaking with Eddie it was another nightmare. I spoke with him for hours explaining what had happened. He questioned whether I was telling the truth.. even Dakota confirmed that last call on food was never expressed to me. It took him days to even acknowledge that there was a problem with food service that night. He tried to come up with excuses i.e. questioned whether I had 60 people etc. He insisted he lost money as well, disregarding my concerns as an unsatisfied customer. Nothing has been resolved. The owner, Eddie kept saying 'the night is over, what do you want me to do about it.' So I flat out told him I wanted an apology. I don't want 1k in refunds. An apology and a few hundred in compensation would be appropriate since he didn't provide the food service that is normative of the food industry.. He flat out refused, said I should be paying an additional 700$ and hung up. Not to mention he told me I was 'bitching and crying' yesterday on the phone. SO unprofessional. So disappointed! How do they expect people to reach a minimum spend when there is no one taking orders? SO bizarre and seems like a scam. read more

Having been a fan of La Carnita's food from the very beginning when they first opened on College St, this location of La Carnita is about a 5 minute walk away from the Eglinton subway station. The restaurant itself is next to a Sweet Jesus and shares a space with Good Fortune Bar (which is downstairs). The vibe is what you would expect from this ever growing taco joint - hip hop music blaring from the sound system as well as platters of delicious tacos enjoyed by many. I've been to La Carnita plenty of times (whether it is the uptown location or the two downtown locations - on John St. and on College St.), and have come to like their food. Recently having gone again to this location, I noticed there were a few differences in price and portions. Sadly, a cod taco now costs $5.79, definitely an increase in price since previously. The menu has also expanded to have a few more items but overall, the price of the food has increased and the portions of the food have decreased. Although the flavours of the food are still on point, I am somewhat disappointed by the pricing and portion of the food. There comes a point where you realize that sometimes, the food is not worth it for the price...and I came to that realization this time going to La Carnita. There are other taco joints in the city which offer similar options for way less. Overall, will not be going to La Carnita as often as I used to anymore due to these changes. This place is another La Carnita (a Mexican taco restaurant) that opened in Toronto. The location is connected to Sweet Jesus, since they are owned by the same company. I came here for lunch on a Thursday. This place looks very new and has a nice patio outside for customers to dine too. The inside decor was dark, hipster and really cool (the website describes it as gringo twist) I loved the tables and the entire layout! The service is very friendly, from the hostess to the waiter. I ordered the Thursday special which was the chicken fried steak taco and the ceviche taco. They both tasted pretty good, but I definitely preferred the ceviche better. The steak taco was served warm and not hot and fresh. For dessert, they serve some items from Sweet Jesus, including their paleta. The only downside of this place is, you can't get take out and the portions of the tacos are expensive for their size. One taco is at least $5+. I would still come back to try their other daily specials despite this since their daily specials are unique and you can't get it any other day. read more

I love the La Carnita location at John Street but it's always super busy so when I got the chance to try the one at Yonge and Eglinton, I was excited despite the bad reviews (in my head it was like, "it's just another location, how could it possibly be that different?!) We went around 9:30pm and it wasn't too busy. We ordered the barbacoa pork ribs, guacamole and chips, the pollo frito and carne asada tacos. The main reason why I'm not giving a good review is because everything was NOT HOT. Like honestly in the moment I didn't even really realize because we were just talking the whole time. But as we kept eating it was clear that nothing was fresh. Everything came out super quickly which should have been an indicator. Close to the end of our guac and chips, you could see that the guac was sitting out because it was brown (it was hidden in the middle!!!). The taste of the chips weren't different from the downtown location and the ribs had a good taste (but cold...) so clearly it was NOT FRESH. And the pollo frito is always my go-to at the John location. It always has a nice spicy peanut-y flavour but here I couldn't even taste it. There was a bunch of cabbage slaw, but why was it sour?!? I've had La Carnita once before in the The Annex, but this was my first time revisiting it within the past 5 years and it was actually better than I remembered it to be! I'm genuinely surprised at the 2.5 rating! I came with a few colleagues and ordered from a $16.99 prix fixe lunch menu, which came with an appetizer (I chose the corn), two tacos (I chose a carne asada and a tostada de ceviche for an additional +$1), and a dessert (I chose the iced tea flavoured paleta). Alright, I admit, the price was a bit expensive since it all came to about $23 total but my oh my, it was SUCH a delicious meal!! Starting off with the Mexican-style corn on a cob, it was nicely dusted with seasoning, charred to a light brown, and drizzled with crema. The crunch was refreshing and sweet, and it really set the mood for the tacos, which were AMAZING. The carne asada (steak) was topped with a HUGE slice of avocado, which was the perfect creamy complement to the juicy and savoury steak. The tuna ceviche tostada was extremely fresh and flavourful and the softer texture of the ceviche paired really well with the crunch of the tostada. As you can tell, I was really impressed. However, the only pitfall of this meal was the dessert. The waitress had told me "paleta" meant ice cream so I was intrigued by the iced tea flavour - turns out, paleta means popsicle and they're supplied by Sweet Jesus. The tacos here are hands down delicious and full of flavour! My favourite is the Carne Asada taco. It is super juicy which I love. Also the Pollo Frito is really good and the spice is amazing! They also had a daily special taco, I don't remember it's name but it is in my picture with the red pepper, and I found that tasty as well. Tacos range from 5$ and up! Not too expensive at all. I know they have an amazing lunch deal for 16.99 if you are trying to save money. You have to order their guacamole and chip, absolutely my favourite! Service was 7/10 because there was a conflict with our reservation and we were put in the most awkwardest seating when others without reservation got better seating. However, the food makes up for the service though. Drinks are really strong, so I only recommend if you love alcohol. read more

This midtown location of La Carnita is much larger than the original one on College. I found the noise level to be less deafening as well, which allowed for actual conversations to occur at your table. The service seems to have improved here too, as our server was very attentive and was able to split our bills. They seem to be shedding the standoffish hipster attitude which the original is known for. And probably for the better, as their newest restaurants have been under scrutiny for this since their openings. The food will always be the highlight at La Carnita though, as the tacos are some of the best you can find in this fusion style. We started off with an order of the tortilla chips with guacamole dip. Even this simple starter tasted better than average, as the chips were crispy fresh and the guacamole was seasoned with spices. Next came the order of tacos. Although small in size, these things are more filling than they appear. I would recommend getting 3 or 4 of these for a satisfying meal. My favourite taco of the night was the Chorizo one. Although overly salty, I felt that it had the most complex combination of flavours. I especially enjoyed the taste of the cotija cheese with the chicharron and chorizo in it. The tostada de ceviche never fails to impress and I would recommend it for any ceviche lover. The fish over top a bed of guacamole and a crispy tostada is fantastic. In Cod We Trust is the signature taco of this chain, but I honestly think that it tastes very average in flavour. The Voltron sauce that they use is not very noticeable and the taco didn't stand out to me. The Pollo Frito taco is my usual go-to taco at La Cartina, but I didn't enjoy it as much at this location. It might have because it was the last one that I ate and it had gotten cold. Otherwise, it is usually amazing since deep fried chicken is hard to screw up. The combination with the mole sauce is what makes it an amazing taco though. Overall, the meal was great and the majority of the menu items were winners. The one complaint I have, however, is with the cost of the food. At 6 to 8 dollars per taco, this is definitely one of the most expensive places to eat tacos in the city. Based on older photos of their menu, the prices are increasing at a rate that is hard to justify as well. So while the food is great, you should be prepared to spend close to $30 on your meal here (before adding in drinks). Decided to have a casual night out with a friend at this spot. I have to say I was apprehensive despite all the negative reviews. We walked in 30 mins early. I had a reservation, so we asked if we could sit at the bar till then. The hostess said it was okay, that she could actually seat us right away. Our first server helped me in finding a drink I'd like as I wanted to try something different. I decided on a pear type of drink with 2 shots of vodka, very tasty. We ordered the chips with the three different combination dips, the Mexican corn, carne asada taco, pollo frito and their taco of the day (philly cheesesteak. The food was very filling I have to say! I don't understand why people are thinking that the tacos are very small and not worth the value. We could hardly finish. I also don't find the price of the tacos expensive at all. These tacos are little creations of goodness.. what do you expect?. If you want cheap theres always Taco Bell?. I most enjoyed the carne asada and the Philly cheesesteak. I will definitely pass next time on the corn and the pollo frito. The corn just wasn't that special and didn't stand out to me. It honestly tasted like something I've made at home. I didn't dig the coleslaw in the pollo frito taco. To me it just didn't blend well with the other flavours. That's just my opinion but don't be afraid to try it because you might like it. I am looking forward to coming back to try the other options. I really like the texture of the tacos! You can tell how homemade they are. Nice and soft with just the right amount of bite. Overall, we enjoyed our night. We weren't rushed or made to feel uncomfortable. Mind you, I will update my review as I will be coming back with my man very soon! Went here for a work party it was good the food and the atmosphere. The drinks were okay. Not really amazing. Chicken taco was flat. Tasted very bland. Now when I ordered take out via uber for the at home Taco kit. The chorizo was super salty/ sour. I could not stomach that flavor. Overall not worth going. I ordered them for the first time through uber eats. I was VERY IMPRESSED. I got the Taco Kit (Tacos for 2). It was presented so nicely and tasted so delicious. The amount of GUAC they gave me made me so happy!!! Definitely worth the try. I'll be back. read more

Lunch special was such a great steal! 1 starter 2 tacos and 1 dessert. Those tacos were so good the waiter was able to make my tacos mild so I enjoyed it way more than having that kick in it. The fresh tuna taco, steak taco, fried cod and chorizo tacos were the ones I had today!! I can't wait to go again to try different ones! read more

Came here for lunch and found it dissapointing and very very different to the college street location we were used to. Our server was mostly missing in action and left us sitting there without a drink for quite a while in the beginning. Once we ordered the food came cold..and I don't mean room temperature, I mean cold. It was also dropped off worldlessly at the side of our table which was completely bizzare. We were given no cutlery or napkins and had to make several attempts to flag down our non existent server to get them. Once we were finished eating the main there was a huge gap in service where we sat without drinks or anything...kept a second star because the dessert came quick and was delicious. Waiter stood at our table and processed the bill without any interaction. Just an overall weird experience, won't be back to this location. read more
