Ok, I was surprised. I enjoyed this place more than I thought I would. Little chains like these always tend to be hit or miss. I've been past this building a 1000 times but never in. Inside, it's much bigger than I thought. The menu is pretty extensive as well. All the Cuban suspects are represented. Leans more towards meat than veg though. I settled on the Tortilla de Papa; the Spanish Omelet. I added cheese, onions, peas, and potatoes. Then our waiter asked me how I wanted it cooked? Perplexed, I almost reminded her that I didn't order a meat dish. She explained to us they can cook the eggs to my liking. Very nice! They recommend the fish filet with shrimp and creole sauce on their menu. I got it. It's the best fish I've ever eaten in my life. I'm from Louisiana and have a rule not to get "Louisiana food" out of the state. This is Cuban food- buttery, garlicky, tomatoey. So so so amazing. We were serenades by the live guitarist from Spain. He is an aerospace engineer. He is learning to fly a Cessna. His two great passions are music and flying. The meal was amazing. Other things we ate: daiquiris, croquettes made from yucca and spiced meat, tamale, chicken and yellow rice, black bean soup, Moro rice, sweet plantains, fried green plantains, La Carreta salad, tostones with shrimp. I have to agree with everyone when they say the bread is amazing. It sure is!! the bread literally just melts in your mouth, it's not heavy at all. It's perfect. Ugh, I miss it. I ordered a Cortadito and it was the most delicious coffee I've ever tasted in my life. It's tiny so I finished it within seconds. I ended up ordering this coffee throughout my entire stay in Miami. A MUST if you've never tried it. We ordered the Cuban Sampler Plate and the Ropa Vieja. Both dishes were amazing! The meat in the Ropa Vieja was a little stringy and tough but still delicious. Also ordered two Mojitos but I would skip on this. The alcohol tasted really cheap and strong, it was very hard to drink. Service was ok not the best. When asked where to get Cuban sandwiches in Miami, the locals told us La Carreta and Versailles (which are across the street from each other). Versailles had a line out the door that wrapped around the building, so La Carreta it is! Our party of 4 got seated right away. I got the "La Carreta" Special sandwich, which is essentially a Cuban with chorizo added, as well as a Cuban Espresso. The sandwich was tasty and not dry, unlike other Cubans I've had before. I ate half and was full. The espresso was divineee. It comes in a tiny cup, and has a sweet finish after each sip. For $1.50 each, I wanted to order 1 or 2 more, but I probably would have been completely wired after that. My friends got the assorted croquettes, a chicken and rice dish, and an omelette dish that was massive. Everything seems pretty authentic here and service was friendly. I came to Miami last weekend and we wanted authentic Cuban food. Well,this place ain't it. I was extremely disappointed. To be honest the only reason that we came here was because the place across the street had an hour wait. We wished that we would have waited. I had coffee which was great. My entree was shrimp with a disgusting,thick butter like substance...white rice which was bland and tasteless and steamed veggies which were exactly like the rice. What else can you say about this place that hasn't been said? As with Versailles across the street, it's a Miami institution. It may not get the tourist love that Versailles gets but the food is just as solid and I think it gets more regulars and locals. This is our backup plan if Versailles is packed and there is a long wait, since we tend to come to Calle Ocho when we have company from out of town, but I really should eat here more. The menu is effectively identical to Versailles although I would say go across the street for dessert since they have the bakery. All the mainstays at La Carreta are just like abuela makes -- the chicken soup especially is the bomb, as is the bean soup. I actually think the lechon is better here than across the street. Shrimp Ajillo is killer. Oxtail stew is great on a chilly December night. Good mojitos, you'll never walk out of this joint hungry. Parking is tight though so be patient. read more

If you have to choose between Verasaille and La Carreta, Versaille blows it out of the park. We went on a Saturday night and it was half empty. But staffs seems to be too busy to tend to us. The waitress were rude and disrespectful. Food is just ok, but nothing special. I feel like with all the talk about La Carreta, the quality of food should be better. We asked for empanadas and was told that we had to go to the bakery to order it because they're not on the restaurant menu!? Portion is small for the price. I literally come here nearly everyday in the morning for a cortadito which that make really really good like my Cuban next door neighbor. The empanadas and pastries are fresh and continuously changed with fresh ones so you get your monies worth. I don't go in to eat but it's a pretty big place to sit in with the entire family. The vaca frita is super great but that's about it for me. Been coming here for years since childhood. You'll also have the same locals sitting down by the order window chatting up about politics, do yourself the favor and keep your comments to yourself!! YUM! The food was soooo savory. I ordered the camarones al ajillo with white rice and tostones. I'm glad I got white rice instead of the morro because the shrimp on its on was flavorful. The waiter made sure to check on us throughout the night. La Carreta used to be my favorite restaurant in Miami for Cuban food...no more. Only thing really good was the buttered toasted bread and the ham yucca croquettes. The Arroz Imperial (reason for visiting) wasn't as good as expected. Was an average yellow rice with shredded chicken with a half boiled egg, side of mayonnaise, and a slice of semi-melted cheese on top. Years back I remember the mayo incorporated into the rice with the melted cheese creating a delicious...heavy and full of calories...but decadent dish. Sorry, but disappointed. read more

Like any good person who is visiting Miami, you hear about the must-visit restaurants serving Cuban food: one being Versailles, and the other being La Carreta. When I had a friend visiting town, I suggested that we grab lunch at La Carreta to satisfy the Cuban craving. We were seated promptly, which I couldn't say for the group that came right after we did and were given two menus to peruse at our leisure (maybe a little too leisurely). After 10 minutes, our waitress comes by with waters, and their "famous" garlic bread and asks if we are ready, which we were. It took a surprisingly long time for our food to arrive, which was rather annoying, especially since we did not get our waters refilled for more than 10 minutes even though it was drained. I had to ask the server who brought our food (who was not our waitress) to get us a refill instead. Our waitress suddenly was aware that she had not been to visit our table and was much more attentive following that request. The food, is pretty good. I had the Vaca Frita, while my friend had the Roast Pork. Both dishes were pretty good, with solid flavors all around. I could do with a little more flavoring on the rice, but that's just my take. I think the roast pork was definitely much better than the vaca frita but there was a strange blue spot (which we think is garlic) on the pork. It was nevertheless pretty good Cuban food, and I'm satisfied. The portions were pretty big and you can easily get a meal and a half to two meals from them. Their prices are very reasonable too and makes for a cheap eats kind of spot here in Miami, which are rare to say the least! TLDR; decent food, decent prices, inconsistent service, but local favorite, so you have to have gone at least once. Aside from that, nothing special. read more

5 Stars based on its coffee alone! Best cortadito I've had in Miami! I've been back twice. They make it with the perfect ratio of coffee to milk to sugar. Besides that we had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon after stumbling into it when we made a wrong turn. It has a giant rooster out front so why not. I had a lechón on Cuban bread. 1) nothing on fresh Cuban bread can be bad. 2) CUBAN BREAD IS LIFE! So back to the sandwich-the lechón was delicious and the bread we'll see above. I did miss maybe some more onions or some mayo to make it perfect. It was huge and definitely shareable. I also ordered a side of tostones which were delicious I will say the garlic mojo left much to be desired it was neither garlicky nor much of a mojo. I got the cascos the guava and cheese for dessert - it was good but I think they used actual cream cheese and well that's not supposed to be it. I will say it was quite busy with what seemed like locals. The staff is friendly but stern aka not smiley & sweet more like RBF but super attentive and want to make sure you a) have enough food & b) are enjoying your food. Much like a Cuban or Puerto Rican mom. All in all I'm super happy we stumbled upon La Carreta and can't wait to go back in about 8 hours for a Cortadito y in Cafe con Leche. read more

I heard great things about this Calle Ocho staple, but it was the least impressive place by far. The place was a wreck with almost every single table covered with dirty dishes and not a buzzer in sight. It took at least 10-15 minutes before a server bothered to greet us. Drinks took ages to get out to us and when they arrived, my husband's sugarcane had mold on it. Food came out warm, not hot, and any lacked flavor. At the end, we had to go waving down our server because he just never came back to our table to check on us. Just the whole thing was super disappointing.
