This is the first of the restaurants "la carreta" to grace Miami. The food, typical Cuban fare, is simple, abundant and generally good tasting. The ambiance and service not so good. I dined alone and was directed to the counter; while I normally don't like the counter, but as they were busy, decided to go along. Waitress barely addressed me, didn't bring bread, and only asked about my experience 2 minutes before I left. Our go to spot for Cuban food. We go at least 3-4 times a month. We usually order churrasco, vaca frita (chicken or beef), grilled chicken, roasted chicken, soups of the day, and croquetas. We had never had any issues with those meals. My husband and I first had La Carreta over ten years ago after coming back home from our honeymoon. So, when we planned out our vacation to Miami, we knew that this had to be the first place that we went to eat. The food is still just as good and then some. This time around I had the Guava chicken and the amount of flavoring was superb. I had so much food that I had leftovers for a couple of days. Our server couldn't really speak English, but we told her that it was okay since we were able to understand each other. Plus, the fact that she was friendly was a plus. I was not helped right away and when the lady decided to finally acknowledge my existence, first she helped the guy in back of me then she helped me..I walked out of there because first off I was getting weird looks from the workers then I was not acknowledge. We're from Orlando, and during a quick trip to Miami my dad recommended me this place for lunch. From first impression, the place looks small and crowded with the kitchen almost right next to the booth we were sat at... but while glancing at the back of the place I noticed that it's actually bigger than it looks. The restaurant is not fancy at all and they could definitely improve many aspects, but when you find a place like that you can be sure you're about to experience something authentic. We ordered the Grilled Chicken, the Ropa Vieja, and the Picadillo Cubano. The portions were big, but to my opinion the food was bland and missing flavor. I did like the plantains a lot but that was it... nothing I want to come back for. For 3ppl we ended up with a $45 check which is not bad at all since we had ordered some soft drinks and mozzarella sticks as app. By the way, the mozzarella sticks on the menu are listed as fried cheese, which is totally misleading if you've ever had real fried cheese. Let me add that Dolores was our server, and she wasn't the most pleasant person you can encounter, but it seemed to be her personality (very blunt). Oh my God, we had so much food! We were on our way to get a gift for a friend at Casa de las Guayaberas, and as soon as I saw the sign for this place, I yelled out "STOP THE CAR!!!" Yes, I wanted my yucca fries. And they were great, served with a garlic aioli mixture, and even though I was eating with my mom, Ms. Nutrition-Conscious, I was able to eat a lot. Even she fell victim to the fries. She even ordered tostones smothered in cheese with a yummy shrimp tomato concoction. For entree, we ordered the Cuban sandwich, naturally. My mom affirmed that the sandwich was indeed very authentic, down to the bread, but it needed more pork instead of ham. Like I cared. I munched it down anyway and looked on longingly as she gobbled down the other half. After the meal, I settled down with a nice cortadito (coffee). Our waitress was very nice. She had just come to the US from Cuba about three years ago, and I held off on asking all types of questions about how she got here from there, how she was finding Miami, etc. If you are off to Miami, this is a spot not to be missed. The food here was the best Cuban I've had by far in Miami. There's the Versailles down tree street - wee were on our way there when our Uber driver said we'd make a better choice at La Carreta. We like La Carreta. Even though we're English speakers, we get treated well, the service is great and the portions are huge. It's too bad I don't live in Miami bc I love Cuban food! I would recommend the churrasco because they do steak really well. It's super flavorful. This time I was feeling seafood, however, and being an island I was confident in Cuban seafood fare. After an ambivalent moment when I decided between the mahi mahi or sea bass (which is labelled "corvina" on the menu), I went with the former and subbed maduros for the yellow rice just cuz I like plantains. I got a nice big fillet of fish, slightly dry but very tasty and nothing a squeeze of lime couldn't fix. The vegetables left something to be desired. I couldn't do much more than pick at the overcooked medley of carrot and broccoli (and one piece of cauliflower). No matter. I had plenty to eat among the crowd. We had gotten beef croquetas and yuca fries as an appetizer, which are delicious dipped in La Carreta's green sauce, and I tasted my way around the table: delicious tongue, another seafood dish, churrasco. The babe finally decided what we should eat since I hardly know the area. I've tried ham croquettes in a mini fried form from Porto's Bakery and oh man totally different. I did enjoy the sandwich however, not a huge fan on having tons of ham on my sandwich so that was a drawback. For dessert we ended it with flan and Cubano cafe. At first I was like why are they giving us coffee was it for the flan but the babe said no hahaha. The drink was yucky lol but the flan was good. YUM! If I am eating Cuban food and it's not made my grandma, it's at La Carreta. This is the ONLY cuban place I eat out at... This is my favorite location. Why? Because it is open 24 hours, you can eat in a dining room, sit at the counter or pick up at the window (no pressure). The service is always fast, the food is quick without compromising quality. LOVE IT.... and this is the only La Carreta that serves sopa de Malanga everyday! The croquetas are HUGE (ask from Lime on the side and squeeze onto the croquetta before eating... thats my favorite way to enjoy them), The sopa de Malanga is perfect - its filling without being too heavy. We flew in from Houston to visit a a few clients on business. And I always provide a review of our restaurants from the food to the service. The Ambiance was nice, music was American, and looks like it was well staffed. We ordered two authentic Cuban plates with an appetizer and drinks. Our empanadas came out without any sauce which we had to waive down a bus boy to get. Our male waiter was less than observant of our needs the entire visit. No one smiled but looked totally rushed, iterated, and stiff. But there were laughs between female staff with the checkout person. Our plate arrived hot, I asked for extra sauce and was ignored. My husband was out of tea and asked a women waitress for more tea and an extra napkin and she totally ignored us. She walked by five separate times ignoring our table with her noise in the air in another direction. I have never felt so unwanted at any establishment that I have ever eaten at. When done we asked for a Togo box and our male waiter told the hateful female waitress to bring it to us. She finally came not happy and gave us our plastic containers with a brown paper bag. We never received a receipt so I walked up to the check out stand to retrieve our order. Their customer service received ZERO stars!! Food: was ok, nothing to brag about. We could get the same dish in Houston from our local Cuban food truck. Without feeling wanted, the food NEVER tastes good. Shame on you people!! First time tasting Cuban food! Overall it wasn't as "exotic" as I imagined, but not a bad meal. We ordered the Oxtail Stew and Cubano. The server was very friendly; I was having a hard time trying to pick which sides went with the stew, but she saved me with her recommendation of beans and rice. No-go on the complementary bread. Dense pressed breads are just not my type, but they may capture someone else's heart. The Cubano was a very modest sandwich, with meat (notably sliced pork), melted cheese, and mustard. Tasted like something someone's mom would whip up for a quick snack. The Oxtail Stew came with 2 tender oxtails, in a shallow brown broth with green peas. Tasted like any good red wine and beef broth stew. Soft white rice and a bowl of black beans made sense as a subdued starchy addition to the salty main course. I like a little kick to my food, so I added some Tabasco sauce. I was not exactly impressed with the array of flavors in this meal, but otherwise the food was well-made. read more

This particular location has been around a long time. The food is good, its Cuban, like any other Cuban food anywhere else. Nothing stands out over other Cuban places. Service can be good or it can be just OK. This Carreta is dingy, but they try to keep it nice. I do prefer this spot over any of the Versailles locations. I ordered the Grilled Chicken, although that would not have been my first choice. And just because when you come to think of it, for the Ropa Vieja, Oxtail, Picadillo, all these dishes are so yummi, but probably have been prepared since the morning... and they are ready to serve!!!
