Worst food in this city. I ordered the vegetarian molcahete from the menu. What i got was bowl of barely cooked soup vegetables in a thin flavorless red soup. The vegetables were nearly whole as in a whole carrot, a potato cut in half lengthwise, really. I was given this dish and never saw the server again. Somehow I was supposed to eat this with tortillas and a spoon. After tasting the thin, red broth and being absolutely disgusted, I went to the register to speak to my server. I told her I didnt like the food and didnt eat it. With a straight face she rung me up and charged me over 30 dollars for a meal I didnt like or eat. This place sucks. I work right next door and gave them a shot today cause I didn't bring in lunch. Their "super" burrito isn't so super. Where I come from (SF Bay Area), a super burrito includes sour cream, cheese, guacamole, and pico de gallo. This one only included the pico de gallo with bland rice and beans. What a rip off for $14. On top of that, when I walked in there was a lady leaning on the counter, waiting for what looked like a refund. She didn't look very happy. The cherry on top was while waiting to pay for my order I saw one of the cooks in the kitchen casually place a prepped plate in the microwave, right in plain view. My husband and I shared a Molcajete Michoacán, which comes with steak, chicken, and pork. It was so flavorful. It also came with rice and beans and hand-made corn tortillas. We were hungry, yet wasn't able to finish it as the portion was huge! The place is smaller than their Monterey location, but the service is just as friendly. Other people have told me they stopped going there for other reasons than my own bad experience. This place used to be solid, but as of late it's been pretty bad. This last time was the cherry on top. It took them an hour to bring out two kid plates and their food was burnt lol The adult food took longer to come out and was also over cooked and the meat was dry. The salsa was pretty watered down too. The server was nice, but that didn't really make up for the terrible kitchen. I have always loved this place so I was very disappointed with my food today. I order chiles rellenos and when they came there was a spoilled smell. I thought it might just be stinky cheese (some are kinda smelly) but when I tasted the first bite it tasted spoiled. The waitress never came back to check on us, although we were alone. My husband and I only ate a bit of beans as the rice was dried and crunchy. I went to pay and told the waitress that the food tasted spoiled and she said "Sorry about that" then charged me the full amount. I'm not going back. read more

I ordered breakfast chilaquiles with an over medium egg and rice & beans and fresh homemade corn tortillas with a spicy green sauce. I was really impressed. Great food and the flavors really worked. The fresh homemade corn tortillas were lightly grilled and added a nice touch too. My meal included chips and salsa. Service was quick and attentive. I got my order in before the rush as I was trying to see the rodeo horse parade. The interior is a bit small probably fits 20-30 ish with a 4 barstools. Timing is the key to this place. read more

I have been coming to this location for years. The service has significantly declined, but the quality of the food remains the same. I placed an order to go today. Initially I was told 20 minutes... 20 minutes later I was told 15 minutes more... and so on. As I am writing this review it has been over 45 minutes of waiting for a real update on the status of my order. The michelada was basic, nothing special. Felt like it was a simple clamato and that's it. The shrimp on it had a weird texture I've never felt in my life so I only ate 2 of 3. I didn't get sick and it didn't taste bad though. The gorditas with the marinated asada was actually pretty good. Get whole beans or fries instead tho because the gorditas have the same beans inside of it as whats already served on the dish. I asked for the hottest salsa and they gave the green. It wasn't spicy but it was good. I'd go back for the food but not the michelada. Pricey too. 62 dollars not including tip for 2 of us and a kids burrito. read more

Was looking for a place to have lunch with my dad. La Casa del Sazón (LCDS) was a good option, it was OK. It was also quick and easy which is what made it appealing. As for as the food goes it could have been better. On this visit we had the Molcajete Michoacano and some tostadas de ceviche. The Molcajete was decent. We got it medium spicy and it was decently spicy and I can tolerate spicy food, I loved the spice level. However, I cant imagine what it would have been like had we gotten it spicy. What I didnt enjoy about the Molcajete was that all the meat was tough. Almost as it had been over cooked/grilled. This was definitely my first Molcajete so I'm not sure if this is the norm or if it was just overdone. Moving on the Ceviche tostadas, the taste of these were great. The spicy salsa they add on top was enjoyable. HOWEVER, the shrimp were very tough. That was the first thing I noticed, almost as if they had been recooked. Also, as you can tell from the pic, that avocado was already browning. Overall the taste of the food was good, it was ok. "This Restaurant Is a Sinking Ship" On Friday 3/18 I bought 2 orders if Aguachiles from this restaurant...I have had them twice before there , the First time I tried it it was . The Second time was okay not like the first.. This Friday's order was the WORST thing I ordered ANYWHERE in a long time. I ordered online to pickup there at 4:15pm ..I arrived for pick up at 4:27pm & the order was not READY. I gave them more than enough time..It wasn't like they were busy...THERE WAS NOBODY eating inside the restaurant. So I waited for my order for 5 more minutes, No worries I wasn't in a hurry. I took the plates to work one for me & the other for a friend. The Sad part was I had to share this experience, I had pumped up the aguachiles there ...When I opened my plate I couldn't believe my eyes "WHAT A MESS " what looks like a sloppy chopped up onion & orange with some sauce & shrimp. In the past I would've given 5 stars....but I went today after not having visited for a few years, and I was very disappointed! Service was pretty slow just to hand us menus once we were seated. I used to always get a vegetarian torta, where they would automatically include nice big chunks of queso fresco and jalapeños on top of refried beans, lettuce, tomato, and crema. This time there was no queso freco and no jalapeños, which are now added upon request. I'm not sure if this is the same menu from before or if the menu has changed since the last time I was there. We ordered our drinks and then a bit later our food, including our toddler's meal which came with a kids drink. We didn't get his drink until we were paying for our food; we had to ask them to bring his drink. The food itself was not very good. Not tasty, the kids plate - (bean burrito rice and french fries) bean burrito way overly salty when i tried it wondering why my son wouldn't eat it, fries were very very oily and piping hot while the rice was barely warm. I'm not sure what happened to this place, but it was very disappointing. To top it off, our car was hit while we were dining, by a guest who had just left the restaurant. He hit our car and drove off. Not so wonderful dinner, unfortunately. I used to be a fan of this place many moons ago and recently the food is not the same and they also have gotten greedy and way too expensive. Yesterday I ordered their version of pupusas thinking they weren't going to be no more than $5.00. Well I was wrong they were $12.00 a piece and I got them by themselves too and only with bean and cheese in them. They tried to justify the price by telling me they used two tortillas to make them and that they were recently made to order aka from scratch. Never going here again I suggest checking the menu with prices before ordering from this place. COME HERE FOR THE BREAKFAST BURRITO! Oh my goodness, it is to die for. First off, a fast food restaurant this is NOT. It took a while on a busy Sunday around brunch-time to get served. But, the server was very sweet and apologized for the long wait. You get started off with some nacho chips and a mild salsa. We had the beers on draft, for $5.00 a pint (quite a good deal). At the time that we came, there were Bohemia, 805, and Modelo Especial on draft. My husband and I both were craving a breakfast burrito. I had the machacha burrito and my husband had the ham. The burritos come with eggs and cheese. We added potatoes as well - which I would definitely recommend doing even though it is an additional $0.99. This was my first time trying machacha, which is a type of shredded beef, and I loved it! After the burritos were served, we were offered mild, medium, or hot salsa to accompany them so we requested the hot sauce. It ended up being a type of green spicy salsa. Oh my! I'm not sure if I was just really hungry, but the burrito was SO good!!! Hot and well spiced and so flavorful! Everything was so well-seasoned and worked well together - from the eggs to the melty cheese to the meat to the potatoes. Overall, a homey, authentic little restaurant with BOMB breakfast burritos. The molcajete is definitely made for 2, or for 1 very hungry person. I order the molcajete mild. I made the mistake of ordering it medium and hot once and it ended being way to spicy for me. If you can handle extremely spicy food it may be perfect for you. To start, my family and I always order the guacamole and chips. The chips that come with the guacamole are not the house chips they serve as an appetizer, but are the delicious homemade fresh chips. Every time we have gone to La Casa De Sazón it has always been a hit. I absolutely love this place and the servers have always been amazing as well. What can I say? I'm an adventurous girl! A few weeks ago, I made a snap decision and bought myself a ticket for the Amtrak Coast Starlight bound for Salinas. Granted, the BF was already in Monterey on business so I wasn't exactly flying blind, but I found it to be adventurous nonetheless. :) About 7 hours and 3 glasses of wine later, I stepped off the train nearly starved to death. Note to self: Amtrak food equals blah. I whip out my trusty Android and yelp our way over to La Casa del Sazon (roughly translated to "house of seasoning"). All I can say is "WOW". SO flippin' delicious! We arrived fairly late but the place was bustling. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before being seated though and we were immediately provided with hot chips and chilled, tasty salsa. We decided very quickly on the house specialty, the Michocano Mocaljete (medium spicy which our waitress said meant "pretty hot") for $16.99 and added in the optional shrimp (8, I believe). The big stone bowl (or mocaljete) came out FIERY hot! I was sweating sitting next to it. Geesh! But the smell and the bubbling liquid caught my attention and didn't lose if for the entire meal. It was insanely good! Asada, chicken, chorizo, nopales, chiles....you name it, it was in there and it tasted incredible. I don't know what seasonings they use but "casa del sazon" is an appropriate name, no doubt! They know exactly what they are doing. I only wish I could replicate it at home. The tortillas were homemade, warm, fresh and a perfect compliment to the meal. We also ordered guacamole which was good but a bit over-filled with onions. The shrimp were just ok. Overly grilled but dipped in the seasoning sauce, they still tasted bomb diggity. Come to think of it, you could dip ANYTHING into that spicy deliciousness and it would taste amazing. It's THAT good! I was disappointed on that it made me feel like they took them off someone else's plate or they've been sitting and recycled. Lots of food for a Molcajete and it only comes with 3 tortillas! They're cheap most places give you 6 when you order this dish. It's a dish for 2 or 3 people and they serve very little rice and beans . We did order an extra set of tortillas. Service was ok we had to ask for a second cup of coffee. They never asked if we wanted more to drink. I think I won't come back till COVID is over. Service is usually better before this COVID thing. Either why, the rest was good the tortillas weren't your usual hand made tortillas. These are not hand made they are different and their chips were stale. Growing up in Watsonville and now living in Salinas, I've eaten some Mexican food. This place is legit. This one off South Main is the smaller original one. A bit more homie and comfortable. The service is genuine and professional. They expanded and now have a second location a few miles away, same good food but much larger building. I live in between them but prefer this location if it's just for two. The food is all fresh, pan seared jalapenos is a great appetizer or side to all there dishes. They have all the essential mexican favorites and a handful of specials. The homemade tortillas are always welcome. Last words...solid. read more

I got the queso birria. It was bigger the most places I have tried this at but the flavor was kind of bland. The shredded meat was good and the consume was mildly spicy which was perfect for me. We got two asada burritos. The child's bean and cheese burrito was listed as being $9.99 but the regular asada burrito was $8.99 and the bean burrito was $4.25. It bothered me that they try bike the prices way up just because they put it as a kid menu item. The rice and beans were good but the meat was bland and very fatty. Will not be returning. read more
