We were super excited to see this New Mexican restaurant open up right across from our house! Came for Valentine's dinner tonight, and everything was excellent! Wonderful service and super friendly wait staff. I had the carne asada with red rice, and it was absolutely delicious. My husband had the chicken tacos and loved them (he's a picky eater too!). My son (21 months) devoured the guacamole and chicken tostadas. Oh, and the margaritas were strong and tasty! We will definitely be back! read more

I have been coming here once or twice a week for a year , the food is decent and the place is kept very clean! Nobody's perfect, three things happened that made me decide to stop coming here. A while back I noticed that they had hotdog torta on the menu, when I got it the hotdogs were pretty much raw, maybe they were on the grill for 30 seconds, I returned it and they brought me one that had cooked hotdogs, I was great at that point! The second thing that happened that I did not like was, the menu has very little English description of the meals, the servers don't always explain things properly, I ended up with a dish that can only be described as cartilage soup, I ate some of it I did not like it, I told them I did not like it and although I did not expect them to take it off the Bill they didn't even offer. The last and final thing that happened, I had ordered the delicious blackened fish tacos special and three Carnitas tacos, I ate the fish tacos, then the Carnitas tacos came out, I'm not sure what it was but it was not Carnita, I ate one taco while trying to figure out if it was just bad quality Carnita or not Carnita at all. I asked the bartender what happened and she said that she put an order in for Carnita, she then went in the back and they then brought out TWO Carnita tacos, once I saw that I realize that they were going to charge me for that one taco that I ate to try to decipher exactly what I was eating, I explain to the manager Karen that I thought that as a restaurant owner she was being petty and cheap, they were going to charge me for their mistake, they were going to charge me for that one taco that I ate ! I asked for the bill and when they brought it to me they were delighted to inform me that they were only charging me for two Carnita tacos! I used to go there every week and spend between 60 and $100, I think Karen should add up all the weeks she's not gonna get that in the future for me. I found a nice little place in Westville that just opened, been there twice and I'm very happy with the service and the food is exceptional, Camacho garage. read more

Tried for the first time. The food was outstanding. The service superb. I had the chimichanga app and the shrimp quesadilla shrimp great and in every bite. Highly recommended will be back soon. A great place in West Haven. read more

Before my encounter with the supposed "owner", Karen, yesterday, I would have given La Catrina 5 stars any day. I have been a consistent customer, coming for dinner and usually sitting at the bar, since they opened. Last night, on MY BIRTHDAY, my boyfriend and I ordered our usual 2 margaritas, and they tasted terrible, so we told the sever and sent them back asking for 2 Coronas instead. After dinner when we asked for the check, the server informed us that we still had to pay for the margaritas because his manager refused to take them off the check. We told him we would like to speak to her because we are not paying for something that we did not eat/drink. She came over, with an extremely smug attitude, and said that we have to pay for the drinks regardless because of their "policy". I have worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry for 15 years before becoming a RN, and I have never heard anything like FORCING a customer to pay for something that was sent back. I said I'm sorry but we will not pay for the two margaritas. I asked to speak to the owner, and she smugly said, "I am the owner, I'm Karen, nice to meet you." I told her that if we were informed of this before sending the drinks back, maybe we could would have tried to choke them down. She said if we do not pay for the drinks, she will call the police... NEVER in my life have I been threatened to have the police called on me for refusing to pay for an item that I did not use, let alone 2 disgusting margaritas that were untouched. To say the least, this unkempt and unprofessional woman tried to take advantage of us AND disrespected us all on my birthday. I ended up crying after paying the bill because I was so disrespected by this woman, while she stood there smiling from ear to ear with a disgusting smirk on her face. Karen, if you read this, please learn from your mistake and learn how to cut your losses instead of losing amazing customers. Never will I step foot in that restaurant again. read more

This was our first taste of LaCatrina and it won't be the last. Easily the first authentic, home made style good Mexican food we've had in our state. Comparable to what we've had at great small non touristy Mexican eateries in San Antonio and Southern Cal. We did a delivery order and while we can only comment on the small selection we chose, I'd guess the quality persists in other dishes. . Our meal included two soups, one a chicken soup with lime and cilantro flavors and full of chicken, rice , potatoes and more. The other, a new one for us, Fideos or Mexican noodle soup was in a delicate tomato type broth. For the main course we split a traditional chicken Quesadilla, which while more or less standard, was served with rather large chicken chunks and quite tasty. The other entree was new to us and more of a large soup than what we expected, but it was very good. It's called Pozole and in a red broth filled with large chunks of pork and hominy corn coupled with an interesting variety of sides you can add, some of which I didn't expect to work well but did, such as radish and oregano. Other sides included lettuce, lime and onion. We can't wait to taste more of the menu. read more

Went here with friends after a long work week. We all had margaritas and tried different flavors. They were all good. We got a bunch of appetizers and food. Everything was tender, delicious, and flavorful. Would highly recommend and will be back again. read more

We were excited to see a new Mexican Restaurant to try locally. We went for early dinner 2pm. We had to wait a long time to get our drinks. The Bar is very slow. Our 1st round for 4 drinks: a Margaretta & 3 Red Sangria's, they were all very watered down and tasteless. The Sangria's came without ice and were on the warm side :( The homemade chips and salsa were excellent. They also served us Pork Rinds and a watered down black bean dip. One of our group loved this. 3 of us ordered Quesadilla's to be on the safe side and we all loved them. One ordered the salmon salad which was fabulous. I wish I had ordered that. We ordered a 2nd round of drinks which was ***So much better than the 1st round but very slow to arrive. In leaving we split the bill in 1/2. Our waitress was young an inexperienced but "we liked her". It was hard to hear her through the masks and she clearly with the language barrier didn't fully understand us. I don't know who rang out out checks but they ended up charging (1) one card for both transactions. Hopefully they will improve with time. We will try them again at some point but will wait a bit first. read more

This place is amazing! I grew up in CT but have lived in FL for years, and we have great Mexican restaurants in FL. When I flew home to CT for the holidays, the first place we visited was my dad's favorite Mexican restaurant, La Catrina. We sat at the bar which had a great ambiance, and they played great reggaetón music! We only ordered appetizers but the food was to die for. Everything from the guacamole to the queso con chorizo to their chips and homemade corn tortillas were fabulous. The service was something out of this world- something you don't get these days. The bartender was very friendly and accommodating. The owner came out to say hello to our family (she knew my dad by name) and helped the bartender serve us. It is her passion that makes this place so special. You have to come here if you are looking for an awesome Mexican restaurant with a great ambiance and friendly service! read more

Went here for lunch on mothers day, bartender splashed water on our food and we asked for a replacement. She was very rude, did not apologize and disregarded us. We asked the manager for a replacement and explained the cleaning water splashed on our food. The manager also did not apologize and was very rude, came to us with an additional order that she was charging us for. Will never return, need customer service training. read more

Excellent new restaurant open in West Haven! The enchiladas with green salsa and steak are my absolute favorite, and the drinks are so delicious. The owners and staff are always friendly and attentive and make the experience that much better. The art is amazing too -- all hand done by a local artist! Also love that they are open early (10:30a!) which is great for early lunches since my office is right around the corner. Can't wait to come here for their Cinco De Mayo event!! read more
