Fantastic little spot with delicious food. We got a variety of tacos and a carne asada burrito as a snack while we were in the area. The tortillas were so hot and fresh. This place is definitely a hidden gem. This is my first time exploring the surrounding areas of New Haven and this did not disappoint. This place feels as authentic as does its food. I was able to get takeout, but they do allow for indoor dining. I got the 3 taco combo (w/ chorizo), nachos (chicken), tostada (chicken tinga), chips guacamole, and horchata. It's really difficult to find good Mexican food in New Haven. My boyfriend at the time and I were hungry and driving down Boston Post when I spotted this little hole-in-the-wall. The food was pretty authentic. I got tacos with rice and beans. Their menu has a wide selection including tortas and dishes with mole (pronounced mole-eh) sauce. The waitress brought out different sauces and limes to add extra flavor. If I recall correctly, they do have the 'real' Coca Cola from the bottle. The little television in the corner is always playing some dramatic Mexican soaps, but again it's not known for ambiance. I've been pretty happy with the service and quality of food almost every time I've gone, however, I did not give 5 stars because one time I took my parents there and the steak was a little tough/dry. Also, I think they should offer horchata-a sweet milky drink with cinnamon. The other side of the restaurant is a little store that sells some Mexican candies and treats if you happen to have a sweet tooth. Finally, a taqueria that gets Mexican food right in CT. Growing up in southern California, I was spoiled with some of the country's best Mexican food. Most of the burrito and taco joints in CT are dismal. This place gets tacos right: lots of protein, plenty of fresh cilantro, onions, and veggie toppings. I was intrigued by some of the uncommon protein options they had on the menu so for the first time I ordered the cabeza (beef head meat, which is hard to come by even in SoCal), pork foot, tripe, and shrimp tacos. All on point, especially the tripe and cabeza. Then the menudo: while it didn't have the hominy and pork foot gelatin that I'm used to, it still had the depth of flavor in the soup and the springy tripe. Food was decent environment not so much. I was surprised that they have no soap in the bathroom. I then asked the staff for soap and was told that they do not have any. Having my lunch knowing that the chef prepared my food after using the bathroom without washing his hands was not the best experience ever. I get a little weird when it comes to tacos and real Mexican food. I grew up thinking I didn't like Mexican food. Boy was I wrong! That's the best way for us yelpers to decide!) and decided to try it out. I was a little nervous because I read reviews about the not so good English with most of the employees - doesn't bother me I just don't like feeling stupid in front of them haha. But the second I walked in I was greeted by a handsome younger guy with perfect English. I got the lenguas (beef tongue which was my favorite) the adobado (seasoned pork) and the bisteca (steak). All three were delicious and I loved the salsas they give you to enjoy with it. Only reason it isn't five stars is I was sad there were no chips but maybe I just didn't see that on the menu due to the language barrier. And also I'm used to taquerias where you walk up and order at a counter so when I walked in I felt slightly awkward that I had to just sit down and wait but that's probably my own inner issues with going out to eat alone lol. If I wanted new and shiny served to me by people that speak English, I'd go to (shudder) Taco Bell. Try the Tacos de Tripa. They are the best I have ever had. The shrimp tacos are good too, but I like the things like head, tongue and tripe. Y'know, stuff that most Americans would consider "weird". Then again. Most Americans like Taco Bell. I don't. Also, this place DOES deliver (after 6pm). If you have a hard time communicating with the waitress (and if Google translate and pointing at the menu aren't something you can manage) talk to the guy who runs the cash register. Delicious! It's like I am transported into someone's grandparents house with authentic Mexican comfort foods. The tortillas are fresh and tasty! We drive 45 minutes to this place! The food is authentic heavenly Mexican food that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Yes- it is a dive, hole in the wall but ...SO worth it!!
