We waited a little bit for the mains but it's Friday night and we were in no rush. My wife had the steak Fajita and they cooked it just like she asked, well done. Jalapeño Heaven is an authentic Mexican restaurant and lounge that opened in Branford, Connecticut in May 1992. It was founded by husband and wife Hector & Gail Flores. Hector was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and immigrated to the United States when he was 18. Gail was born and raised in Branford but relocated to Florida as an adult. The couple met when Gail was managing a restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. They soon married and relocated to Branford in 1985. They had dreams and aspirations of raising a family and opening their own restaurant. Their daughter Nicole was born in 1987 and the restaurant opened five years later. The menu features several authentic Mexican dishes including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, poblanos, asides, fajitas, and more. Jalapeńo Heaven is also well-known for their extensive selection of margaritas. My family and I recently had dinner at Jalapeño Heaven for Cinco de Mayo. This was my family's first visit, while I've been there numerous times. I think they are one of the best, most authentic Mexican restaurants in New Haven County. When you're there, you almost feel like you're at an awesome Mexican food party at someone's house. We started off with some of Jalapeño Heaven's signature margaritas. I had the "Ultimate Margarita" (Sauza Hornitos Plaza, Cointreau, lime juice, sour mix, topped with Grand Marnier) while my wife has a "Mango Margarita" (house margarita with mango puree). Our server also brought some complimentary tortilla chips with salsa to the table; they have some of the best chips around! For our entrees, I had the "Taco Salad" (crispy flour tortilla shell filled with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, olives, topped with sour cream and guacamole) with ground beef, my wife had the "Ala Street Taco Trio" (soft flour tortillas, one filled w/ ground beef, one w/ spicy shredded pork & one w/ shredded chicken, topped w/ lettuce, tomatoes and cheeses) with Spanish rice and black beans, our older son had a "Kids Grilled Shrimp Quesadilla" with smiley fries, and our younger son had the "Kids Chicken Tenders" with smiley fries. Very cute place. It's not huge inside but it wasn't terribly busy so the wait wasn't long. The staff was so pleasant and attentive but not overbearing. The food was delightful. My boyfriend got the chimichanga which was really well done and huge that he still had leftovers. I got steak which was so good I couldn't stop eating it. It came with mexican potato pancakes which were quite yummy. The beans and rice was also really you'd and will seasoned. The cocktails were good too. There is plenty of off street parking here too. Sangria is supposed to have lots of different fruits IN the drink. The building and decor were old and tired looking and the tables were on top of each other. Prices were outrageous. Me and my husband have dined in and also done takeout on two separate occasions. Our dine in experience was much more delightful or we just happened to have made the right choices for the food. We ordered margaritas, jalapeño poppers, vegetarian chimichanga. Everything was amazing, a little spicy just the way I like it, crispy from the outside and well cooked on the inside. Service was really good and general ambiance was cozy with ample seating and also a patio. But on the other hand, our takeout experience with the food was really subpar. We ordered chilli rellenos. They were not made with chilli rellenos, not cooked in authentic mexican way, no flavour, the cheese that was used was also not a good quality and made us both sick after. I would accept and alternate way to cook like baking instead of frying but changing the ingredients and recipe altogether was too much. read more

I will say, if you're looking for traditional style tacos this is not the place, if you go there knowing to expect Mexican American style tacos (lettuce, tomatoes & cheese) then you will not be disappointed. The tacos are my usual go to, i love the adobo chicken or ground beef. The complementary chips and salsa are delicious, they have the best salsa! And believe it or not, their burgers are out of this world. They offer a fish taco in the summer that is my absolute FAVORITE. Almost every dish comes with rice and beans which are delicious, and authentic. Staff is friendly and always willing to make suggestions for food or drinks if you're undecided. I was looking for a nice place to eat before I started my new years diet. I stumbled upon Jalapeño heaven going down Main Street Branford and I had to make a stop. The service alone deserves a 5 star. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating. Very quick and attentive which is exactly what I like in a restaurant. When I arrived the restaurant wasn't very filled however many people quickly filled in. Overall great ambiance once more customers arrived. My food was great and the portion sizes were generous. This is the place to get some good Mexican food in Branford for the last +30yrs. Not Taco Bell, Chipotle, or any of those other over priced restaurants. They've made for better seating with their outdoors area, it can be a little tight inside the restaurant itself. The upstairs is always a fun option for a night out with friends if they have it open, isn't always available. Calling ahead is best, especially if it's Cinco De Mayo weekend. If you're looking for drinks, eh it can depend. I say this is more a family friendly set up than what you'll find in Branford's barmuda triangle but the food is delicious. Even the chips and dip are better here and they're not charging you for it. read more

So chips n salsa are solidly good. Both Salsas are fine (likely both canned concoctions which I don't understand since a fresh version is so much worth it & really is just a lot of chopping veggies & herbs). Margarita great. On the rocks with salt. Done well. Service was FAB. My waitron was awesome. She was very friendly, super fast & very nice. So this was really on par with an really average generic local Mexican restaurant. On the Border is way better. I wouldn't even compare this to Chili's. Honestly, I would come back for the chips n salsa & the Margaritas. But I would also consider just staying at home, shaking a small pitcher of margaritas & making a quick quesadilla with cheese n scallions & a simple salsa or pico de gallo. And relaxing on the patio. These guys are nice but the food is just really really average bordering subpar. In this day & age, it is just really not ok to be doling out this kind of food. Redo the menu with fewer items if necessary. Put away the can opener, get out of the Walk In, patronize your local Farmer's Mkt & prepare some FRESH food. There is really no excuse anymore to be serving this type of average processed food. I hate writing bad reviews. Hadn't been to JH in quite some time. We picked up a large order this past Friday amidst the pouring rain- well worth the drenching. I enjoyed one of the best Chlile Relleno dinners I had ever had- great rice and beans and the corn bread is moist and amongst the best you will have. The poppers and chile were spot on. I am a queso conniseur, and the Jalalpeno Heaven cheese sauce and fresh made chips were a perfect consistenecy and unique flavor. So we got a sitter on short notice this past Saturday night and we decided to try here on a whim as we always pass it and wondered how it is. You enter the building and yes, I understand that it is a house transformed into a restaurant...but it is carpeted. How could the floor ever truly get cleaned of all of the spills and crumbs, etc? So that was for starters. We are led upstairs to a hightop-like table next to the bar. It was super hot and eventually a fan was turned on. We were originally the only ones up there besides the bartender/server and one person at the bar. We placed our order and then we decided to hop over to the bar for some shots to go with our margaritas. The meal was a bit disappointing.. I think my entree, the crab enchiladas had good flavor BUT for like $18 it SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE WITH SHREDDED IMITATION CRAB MEAT. Like if you can't get crab meat, don't offer it, or don't have it be that price. You can even see it peeking out of the bottom left corner of the picture I posted. Maybe my expectations were too high considering I get a bangin' crab quesadilla from Geronimo's in New Haven with tons of lump crab meat. Our guacamole was processed. As in prepared ahead of time, like a "Wholly Guacamole" type of kind. I know this because we took some home and besides tasting like the prepared kind, it barely browned by the next afternoon in the fridge because of all of the additives in it. I will say though, if I could give a review based purely on the service, Melissa would have definitely gotten 5 stars. She made us some great drinks, was enjoyable to conversate with and made it a great evening for us despite the slight lack of food quality. Will we be back?
