This place was the choice of our meetup.com host who has a penchant for karaoke which seems to be a highlight for La Cevicheria. Otherwise, it's pretty much a dive in Kens with long tables with everything else sketchy enough you don't want to look too closely. I had a Michelada which was quite good and really hit the spot! Then I remembered someone recommended the shrimp tacos, which I always enjoy so I ordered those. Someone at the table ordered nachos which definitely looked good. But when I got my tacos I was confused as to why the shells were on the shrimp still (heads off). Not sure why that would be and it's too obvious to be a mistake, and in hindsight I should have sent that order back to the kitchen as I couldn't eat it like a taco. Instead I had to pick each shrimp up and peel it before eating which was messy because of the mayo, and took long enough that the shell was soggy by the time I got to it. Not ideal and made me think that there were not any Mexicans in the place. My only guess is that they could be Filipino? They would serve shell-on shrimp in some of their dishes which would be fine, being with noodles or rice. Also the karaoke thing made me think of Little Manilla lol, as the bar up there was heaven for out of tune singing 100%. I see now they are closed for the winter 2025/6 and back in April which makes a lot of sense since Kens is often a ghost town when it gets cold out. read more

We came here on a Friday night and sat inside. They have a small stage for live music, but nothing was planned for that night. We ordered "Piña Colada" and "Margarita" for drinks, "Calamari Rings" for appetizer, and "Cactus Tacos" and "Octopus Ceviche" for entree. Calamari portion was smaller than we expected. And Octopus Ceviche had smashed avocado on Google photos (maybe they weren't accurate), but it didn't come with smashed avocado; but it was delicious. Calamari and tacos were just okay. Dropped by on a Friday night and it didn't get busy until 10PM. The drinks are pretty good - would recommend the margarita and mojito. It's fairly strong. The food is okay, not super delicious but fine to pair with the cocktails. So why the 2 stars? Dropped by after having dinner at another restaurant. We hung out at La Cevicheria for almost 1.5 hours. The service was okay throughout the night. Not particularly friendly but figured it was getting busy due to karaoke night. (I believe that's what it was). When the bill came, the server came to our table, with 0 expression on her face, typed in the amount we owed and passed the machine to us. Started off with mojito and Caesar - their version of Bloody Mary. My mojito was so refreshing, strong, and delicious!! My husband thought his Caesar wasn't spicy enough and needed more salt. After he put more hot sauce, I tasted it and it was great! We ordered the grilled octopus which came with 4 small tentacles, grilled vegetables and a side of rice! The octopus could have used another minute on the grill but it and the grilled veggies were perfectly seasoned, crispy and scrumptious. We got the ceviche shots as well. Yum! Located on the southeast corner of Augusta Avenue & Oxford Street the place occupies a corner store that previously housed Big Fat Burrito. Entering the door which sits on the corner the place has tables both inside & outside that look out onto Augusta Avenue & Oxford Streets. The kitchen is located in the back of the restaurant behind a bar where three waitresses served everyone in the place. The menu featured a good selection of seafood appetizers, ceviche dishes, tacos & cooked fish. We ordered a couple of their ceviche dishes, I had the Azteca (basa soaked with tomatoes, jalapeños & cilantro in lime juice), while my friend had their Inca (basa soaked with onions, cilantro, aji amarillo, sweet potatoes & lime juice). The food arrived in metal dishes shaped like fish that helped keep the fish fresh & cool, with a side of fried nachos & was a real pleasant surprise. Not only were the dishes more than we expected they were incredibly delicious. The guacamole was very simple, very coarsely chopped, and very delicious. The shrimp tacos were tasty, and very fresh tasting. We ordered chicken tacos. There were supposed to be sautéed onions on the chicken tacos. One taco had none; the other had one barely cooked slice of onion. The chicken was boiled to the point that it had no taste, and an unpleasant texture. The place is pleasant; they play Mexican music. This place served the worse food ever. Ordered a seafood soup and an octopus ceviche. The what so called ceviche came out dry, not a single drip of lime juice, sauce or anything on it. It feels like they just opened a can of octopus and put it on a plate. We asked the waitress why is this so dry and she brought us some lime, hot sauce and shrimp cocktail sauce. Do they even know what a ceviche is? Ceviche is supposed to be cured in fresh citrus juices. How are they calling themselves a Cevicheria?? Next, the seafood soup came out. It was lukewarm. The broth taste like watered down shrimp cocktail sauce. The shrimp in the soup was so overcooked to the point it was brown-grey and immediately disintegrated in your month. It was so gross we left them all behind. And how can the shrimp be so overcooked but yet the soup came out lukewarm. That only means that this soup is so old and has been re-heated so many times. Was visiting Toronto and I came across this little gem in the heart of Kensington Market. If you want authentic Peruvian food - this is the place to go. Fantastic ceviche, the octopus was fresh and perfectly cooked and there is really nothing to complain about. A lot of love is put into this restaurant and it shows.
