We came for tamales, I ask the person like twice "please I want rajas and chicken" they gave us pork. I'm allergic to pork, we call the store what can they do, they ask us to drive back 20 minutes and bring the tamales intact next day. So disgusting, at least an apology or honoring the costumer for that mistake but nothing! On top of that the bread we brought it was very hard to eat. Like it have couple of days for sale! read more

This place is always popping. I can never find a parking spot in the small lot, so it's easier if I go with someone that can wait in the car. I mainly come here for the tamales. They're a little heavy on the corn, but still pretty good. There are 3 different kinds - red, green and mole. Oh wait...I think there is also a jalapeno one. I think they are all chicken, but I'm not sure. I tried asking ones, but there was a language barrier. 6/$5 is a pretty good deal, though. I picked up a couple of cookies and bun, all of which were good. There were so many to choose from! The ones I got were $0.70/each. I don't recommend the $2 cotton candy, though. I gave one a try, and the first bite was good. But then there was this greasy after taste that came with every bite that was pretty strange. read more

Ordered a cake from here. Was easy to order, and tasted great! Everybody loved it. They had ample options, and the price was reasonable. We came here on a weeknight at around 9, and it was bustling! At least 5-8 customers were there, and there were 3 young ladies working at the counter, not including the employees working in the back. I've only been to one Mexican bakery before, in Elgin (which I absolutely adore), so when my awesome yelp friend Jesse recommended this place to me, I was pretty enticed at the prospect of checking this place out. Even though it was late in the evening, they had a wide selection available, 20+. Pastries, cookies, cupcakes, donuts, bars, Mexican ice cream bars too. We picked 3 varieties - a triangular cheese-filled pastry, a cheesecake cup, and a pink cake sandwich ball (sorry, I'm not sure what the names of these pastries are lol). For these 3, the total came to less than $3! Usually when I go to a bakery, a pastry costs at least $2-3 so I was surprised that these Mexican pastries were less than a buck each. Triangle pastry - 3 stars. Soft outer bread with a not-too-sweet cheese filling. Cheesecake cup - 3 stars. Same or near-same cheese filling as used in the triangle pastry. Pink cake sandwich ball - 3 stars. Tastewise, it was good but nothing outstanding to set it apart from the norm. Really cute though. Inside was an adequate layer of strawberry jam. The cake texture was closer to a light cookie than a soft cake. read more

I ordered a unicorn cake the cake was pretty they originally gave me the cake with the wrong color but fixed it really quickly. The Chocolate cake didn't taste good at all. It was just pretty I spent 30 plus dollars on a 8 inch unicorn cake and would've appreciated it tasting good. I will not recommend this place to anyone. The workers are nice but the items aren't good not even the doughnuts they're really thick and they put them in a paper so by the time u get home all the chocolate is on the paper and you have a plain doughnut. read more

What a great Bakery and happening place. We arrived about 7:00 on a Friday night and there were all kinds of happy people filling up their trays with sugary goodness. When you first enter, you should grab tongs and a tray which are on your left. Then fill that sucker up! To the right are the cakes and I grabbed a slice of pound cake and one of red velvet, wham on the tray! Straight ahead were the smoothies which looked frothy and delicious but since I didn't get one, that will have to be for the next visit! To the left of the entrance are the buns, cookies and breads. We continued to pile treats on our tray, it was like we had won a Bakery fill up the tray contest. When we felt we couldn't fit any more on the surface, we felt it was time to leave. The first register is cash only which we skipped as we were afraid we didn't have enough on us. When our total came to 6.11 and we got two bags we were incredulous. The rest of the weekend we sampled and delighted in our selections. But my favorites? Those pound cake and red velvet slices. However, to be fair, don't you think we should try them again just to be sure? La Chicanita, you've got two new fans in Frankfort. read more

I've been to several Mexican bakeries. And while I've only been moderately impressed, my wife was beginning to become unimpressed until we tried La Chicanita last night! The first thing we noticed was that all items were on steroids. Rolls, donuts, you name it. Everything here (with the exception of mini cookies) was bigger. We appreciated the hours, too. The door says something like 6 a.m.-10 p.m. But when I called before we went, they told me they were open until midnight. We thought everything would be stale by the end of the night. Wrong. Either they lace their shit with crack or they replenish with fresh goods throughout the day. Another plus, is that they serve ice cream and hot food. The only minus is it's on the "bad side" of Aurora (west of Farnsworth lol). Hell if I know what all of the items offered are, but each one we tasted was good to phenomenal. Here's a list of our sampling: -Chocolate covered donut - Standard shape, but good, thick chocolate frosting. Texture was less airy and slightly more bite than let's say Dunkin Donuts. -Sugar raised donut - Standard shape, same texture as above. -Cheesecake - Like cheesecake from other Mexican bakeries, the texture is slightly different. We were a little disappointed that the crust was a little too thick though. -Flan - Meh. It was good, but nothing special. Slight burnt caramel taste with no apparent caramel liquid. A little dry and flavorless. -?? - This pastry is common, but I just don't know the name if it. It looks kinda like a UFO. It has a ring of phyllo dough surrounding a delicious, moist cake. Tons of eggs were used for this great-tasting pastry. -Sugar raised donut with cream in the center - My wife proclaimed this to be the best-tasting donut she's ever had! She is a HUGE donut fan, too. In an area with a dizzying amount of Mexican bakeries to choose from, La Chicanita should be at the top of your list to try. It was a hell of a lot better than La France. I can't wait to try their Tres Leches, ice cream, hot food, and other goodies. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

This busy little bakery on New York Street could be better. I was craving Mexican pastries on my way home from work and took a tiny detour to La Chicanita. Typical of Mexican bakeries, there are plastic trays and tongs at the door, and you can choose whichever pastries you like. There are no prices posted, but everything is cheap enough that you don't need to worry too much about that. There are no labels either, so when you come across 3 different trays of empanadas, they might be three different flavors...or not. This can be solved easily by asking, but there's a language barrier here, and I didn't feel too welcome to try and practice my crappy Spanish. They accept debit and credit cards, but you have to purchase more than $5, which is reasonable. The lady behind the counter spoke to me in Spanish, and I could only understand every third word (if even that), so I politely smiled and said, "I'm sorry, I don't speak Spanish." I thought maybe she would point at the sign (I had just noticed) about the $5 minimum, or heck, get the other employee working to assist, but instead she just appeared to blindly push at whatever buttons the register appealed to her. This area of Aurora is notorious for a significant Hispanic population, so I don't expect the Queen's English here, but I felt pretty unwelcome. There were a ton of kids running around in here like wild animals, one of them even started hitting keys on the pin pad while I was trying to check out. Anyway, if you're still interested at this point, the croissant filled with custard, and donut filled with custard and chocolate, were absolutely delicious! There are so many other bakeries in Aurora, so if you skip Chicanita, you're not really missing out on anything. read more

My wife and I were married in Mexico in June. We had a small reception for family and close friends locally this past weekend. In Mexico, we had a tres leches cake (which was delicious) and wanted to have the same kind of cake at our reception. I had been to La Chicanita once before, so I suggested we check it out. Wow, was I impressed. Their donuts and cookies are good, but that tres leches cake we had for our reception was out of this world! I'm not a "cake guy," but I loved it. The lady that took our order was thorough when asking about what we wanted, and they delivered exactly what was promised. Nothing but stellar comments were offered to us about how good the cake was! The cake was a whole sheet, and it fed right around 80 people - I hardly saw a crumb of leftover cake on people's plates. We ordered a small circular cake, just in case, but we didn't need to cut and serve it at the reception. It now awaits its fate in the fridge! I can't wait to dive into that, too! I highly recommend La Chicanita Bakery - whether you need a half dozen donuts or a cake for your wedding reception or birthday party. We will definitely be going back here for future birthday parties, etc. I'm a big fan of supporting local small business in lieu of corporations. This authentic Mexican bakery really "takes the cake!" P.S. I don't think many of the people there speak much English. This wasn't an issue for us since I speak Spanish and was able to order the cake with no problem. But, you may consider brushing up on your high school Spanish (or take a Spanish speaking friend with you) before you go. read more

First time I've ever been to a Mexican bakery by the way, and I'm non Hispanic. Many of the items were dry which wasn't my favorite, but they did have a decent selection of softer items that were very good. Churros from Cermak are still better in my opinion. This place is AWESOME! I recently moved to Naperville, and have always gone to panaderias with my dad when I lived in Hoffman Estates. Naperville doesn't have much as far as the Mexican community goes (fresh markets, taquerias, panaderias, etc) I often have to go to Aurora off E. New York Street to get anything authentic. I had a craving for some Mexican sweet bread last night and came across this place, and decided to go, the other reviewers are not kidding when they say this place is always packed, I got there around 8pm and there were at least 10 people stuffed into this tiny bakery buying bread. I've gone to many panaderias but their bread here is incredibly moist and super delicious - the price is right too :) I got a bag full of pastries including 2 conchas, 2 cream cheese filled turnover (empanadas), a jelly filled turnover (empanada), 2 pig shaped cookies (marranitos or puerquitos) and cream cheese danish, another chocolate covered goodie for less than 7 dollars. This place makes even the horrible road construction on 59 and New York St worth the trip! read more

I love Mexican pastries so very, very mucho. I had a hankering for some today and after doing a quick Yelp search, found La Chicanita about 10 mins away from my job. I stopped in and quickly made my tray and tongs ready to pick through the spoils that lay ahead. There are 3 huge rows of pastries: bread-like pastries, cookies, cakes, and more. There's a chilled case with cake slices and whole cakes to go (tempting!) I opted for a few cookies, a slice of chocolate cake and a few of the Danish-like items. I think I got 8 things total, and it came out to $5 and some change. For real. This would have cost me about $20 if I went to a regular bakery. Plus, I did Spanish 101 hard mode and spoke to the cashier in Spanish. Next time I go, I am definitely going to try a slice from their chilled case. For those that are having a hard time finding parking, go to the side of the building near Union. I found plenty of spots around 5:30pm on a Friday. read more

Have not tried the cakes, but the pastries are subpar in comparison to other mexican bakeries. The conchas are dry and the sugary tops fall out. The service is also lacking. Unfortunately Mexican bakeries are known for not labeling their pastries-they expect the customer to be familiar with what's available. I had the misfortune of purchasing a savory bread with ham inside. As someone of Mexican descent, this pastry was unusual to say the least. read more

First Mexican bakery. I went to pick up dessert for Cinco de Mayo. Went with the flan, which was a huge cake and great value. I also got one of the desserts from the case. I'm glad I read on here first so I knew what to do. Grab the tray and some tongs and put what you want on there and go checkout. My thing was $1. I have no idea what it was but it was delicious!
