The coffee is amazing here, especially the draft latte. I just bought some at a grocery store in a can but have yet to try them. The prices are great and the atmosphere is hipster and open, maybe a little too social feeling for me. I've only had the draft latte and the staff seem okay, but didn't seem too friendly or excited about engaging in a conversation. I've run past this café for months now (including while it was under construction) hoping it would finally be the one to offer what so many DC cafes are lacking - adequate indoor seating. Well it has that, and it is the perfect place to go if you care about literally no other aspect of your café experience. It's not a particularly inviting place, and seems intentionally designed to be hostile to the customer. - The design, while initially appealing, is contrived. - The staff could be more friendly, especially since I was one of 2 patrons when I arrived. - The menu is hanging way in the back where nobody can see it from the counter. - Huge pastry case with no pastries labeled? - There are no signs indicating what to do with your dishes. - My Americano wasn't especially hot and was especially underwhelming - There is no WiFi, so even if for some reason you didn't want to get out of here as soon as you entered and take advantage of the copious seating and table surfaces, good luck getting anything done without your own cellular hotspot. I was excited for this location to open, as it is much closer to my house than la Colombe in Shaw. This will NOT be a coffee shop I come back to often, if at all. 1) Service is terrible. The two employees were not welcoming at all and the one at the register was impatient with me when I asked about the unlabeled pastries on display. The entire interaction with both employees was filled with attitude on their part. I have been coming to La Colombe for some time drinking overpriced tea. This morning I ordered a tea and asked for a larger cup. I prefer the larger cup so it lasts longer and isn't as strong. They would not give me a large cup due to company policy. This is mind blowing, company policy won't allow me to have my morning drink the way I would like it (remember I am the one who is going to be drinking it). I am happy to pay an extra few cents for the larger cup if that's the problem but company policy should be more along the lines of the customers can have the drink they are paying for the way they enjoy it. read more

I came here for a day of productivity in an industrial-chic environment only to find out this is one of anemically few coffee shops in the vicinity that does NOT offer WIFI!!!!! ??????? I personally find this an offense against the freelancer and a weak move against the industry titans who DO offer free wi-fi for your $5 mug/to-go cup of whatever. I'd suggest moving camp to "Mulebone" just a block-ish down the street, where wifi is free, and high-speed, as well as coffee that ranks in the B-range. For those of you in search of a breakfast-whatever meal as you start your day of so-called productivity, La Colombe is not the place (they don't have anything beyond a bacon scone) and you should move on. I think this is probably the best coffee in DC, and this is coming from a hardcore wydown coffee girl. Even though la colombe is a large chain, their coffee is prepared carefully each time you order, and they have such a wide variety of options. It's a very large space so it seems like the idea place to set up shop for a few hours and do work, but there are 2 major problems: 1- limited food options. With so much space you would think they could designate some counter space to sandwiches or something. They have some pastries, but they're mainly sweet not savory aka not lunch material 2-no wifi? I'm sorry, but you're a coffee shop! When they first opened up I thought this was something they would fix eventually, but I think they're just content having people steal from the Wework network upstairs which isn't exactly professional. This is a great place to work/study. Nice vibes. Clean and great lighting. Good coffee and OK prices. HOWEVER, there are very few outlets here (only one that I saw near the back), the seating is a bit limited given how crowded this place can be, the sound gets quite loud with conversations, and there is NO WIFI. Every time I'm here, it seems like folks are mostly here to do work, so not having WiFi or more accessible outlets definitely detracts from the experience. There's a touch of pretension here and there (e.g., individual spoons and dishes laid out on the counter, ready for you to stir your own concoction). But the coffee lives up to the hype. So I was in the neighborhood running errands when I realized I absolutely needed coffee before I walked another step. The nice tall barista manning the register gave me a sip and before it could get to my stomach I was like hi I want this. It was light, refreshing, and just what I needed for 2:30 in the afternoon. Coffee is decent and the people who come here are very friendly. Like any other coffee shop, it gets busy on the weekends, so expect to wait for a table. Like other people have said, there's wifi you can connect to from the WeWorks nearby, but not from the coffee shop itself. When I evaluate coffee shops I consider the following: Coffee quality: I'm a pour over guy and this is what I'll typically order if available Study-ability: Wifi, accessibility of electrical outlets, seating arrangements Vibe: Staff, decor, cleanliness, intangibles Here's how La Colombe Coffee measures up according to my rubric (Visited on a typical Sunday afternoon). Coffee (4/5): La Colombe had three pour over options available which ranged in price from $5-7. Many would scoff at these prices (I can hear my parent's voice: "$7 for a cup of coffee!?!?") but understand: these are single origin beans which are carefully roasted to bring out subtle tasting notes, skillfully hand-poured after your order. Prices are on par with other third wave coffee shops. La Colombe uses a Yama Silverton system with paper filters. Unlike other pour over methods (V60, Wave), there is a valve on the Yama which allows the barista to steep the coffee in the funnel before letting it empty into the cup. I tried the Esmeralda Geisha ($7), which has cupping notes of "lime blossom, honeysuckle, and tangerine." It was a great cup of coffee, smooth with some citrus acidity. May have been a bit over-extracted - in the future I'd like to bring some of their beans home and experiment with different grinds/extraction times. Study-ability (2/5): Free wifi is not offered here (there were a couple of open wifi networks available to connect to but I am always wary of doing so) and there are limited electrical outlets. Be prepared to bring a fully charged laptop. Overhead music not too loud, perfect amount of ambient noise. Expect to wait for a table to open up. Vibe (5/5): Great natural light and open space, friendly staff, clean restrooms. I appreciated the still and sparkling water available on tap. Overall La Colombe is a solid spot to drink some great coffee and chat with friends or a date. If you are a heavy laptop/internet user looking for a coworking space, La Colombe may not meet your needs. Worth a trip if you enjoy pour over! read more

My family and I stopped at this La Colombe location for draft lattes. As we're inside waiting for our coffees, I ask if it's alright for me to use their restroom. This question goes ignored/unanswered. Well, alright, I suppose I understand if they're too busy to pay attention, and, seeing that there was no line for the restroom, I walk over. The barista, Alex, who ignored my inquiry, shouts at me, then comes running after me, cornering me in front of the bathroom to berate and chastise me that the restroom's were closed. I did not expect to be chased down by a man, and, I immediately stepped away from the bathroom door. I understand it's coronavirus, but he could have softly informed me, or sent a woman to fetch me, or resolved this issue in a much kinder manner than he had. Taken aback, I informed him that this reaction was extraordinarily aggressive. Instead of apologizing for the misunderstanding or responding to me cordially, he railed against me, raising his voice at me to rebuke me for my error. I was so shaken by this response- it was so alarming and unnecessary. I would never be a patron at this La Colombe location if this sort of behavior is condoned by management. read more
