La Condesa is a beautiful restaurant in Austin. Their aesthetics and presentation were pretty but felt there were a few things I feel they could improve on. The bad part for La Condesa unfortunately is some of their pricing and portion sizes on dishes. We ordered the guacamole which I was shocked with how small it was considering they charge $16. You also get a small bowl of tostadas that wouldn't even be able to finish the already small size of the guacamole. We ordered two pitchers of margaritas for my party and was shocked to see that for the high price you pay, had a significant amount of ice in them which ends up watering it down. The menu is not too large so please make sure if you give this place a try, check out their menu beforehand to make sure this is food that you would like. We also had an issue with our waitress who was not very attentive and when a person in my party asked her for more tostadas for the guacamole, she didn't acknowledge him and simply turned around and talked with another table. We felt this was a bit strange. The good part was that their main entree dishes were very delicious in flavor. I ordered the carnitas tacos and they were savory and pretty good portion wise. This place has been on my "to-do" list for a while, but it's a bit too fancy/upscale for my usual tastes. Today, I took the plunge. The menu was familiar - Mexican food standards at upscale prices. I braced myself for disappointment. For the appetizer, my wife and I shared a sweet potato tamal with green molè sauce. It was excellent. The masa was so fine/delicate that it basically melted in your mouth and every ingredient shined. Nothing was overpowering and there was a perfect equilibrium between the masa, the filling, and the sauce while the acidity of the pickled onions rounded out every bite. For dinner, my wife had the entomatadas and I had the huarache de huitlacoche. Same story as the appetizer - every ingredient shined while none was overpowering. Perfect balance on all levels - the huarache masa had a distinct taste to it, as did the black beans, mushrooms/huitlacoche, and the locally sourced microgreens. Simultaneously nostalgic and eye-opening. I stole a few bites of my wife's entomatadas, and true to form, the tomato sauce offered the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, the cotija cheese perfectly complemented the sauce with great contrast in texture, temperature, and subdued cheesiness all while the tortillas were never lost in the mix. The corn flavor was right there as the constant note that held it all together. Often, you'll hear audiophiles ramble about "separation" when they rave about their favorite hardware. They'll note that with top-end hardware, there is a clarity and separation of instruments/vocals that elevate the listening experience. This is similar in that the flavors I've typically taken for granted in Mexican dishes as I enjoy them as a whole are all individually apparent here while still combining to make a sum greater than their individual parts. This is clearly a labor of love by the Chef and his tribute to the foods we all grew up with. Came here for dinner and got a trip down memory lane and left with a newfound appreciation for foods I have always eaten along with a refreshed thankfulness for the loving hands that have prepared them along the way. Along with that personal experience, this also served as a delicious reminder of the importance of corn as a staple for all of our predecessors who originated on this continent. During our experience, the hosting and wait staff was also top-notch and perfectly attentive. The ambiance is nice and my wife and I had a great time. Not sure I'll make it back as I'll always be more in the food truck crowd than the upscale restaurant crowd, but I am grateful for the experience and gladly recommend it - not so much as a place to get stuffed, but as a place to savor and reflect. I ended up committing to finding a better dinner to celebrate as this was a let down. For a group of 10 we spent close to 1k for dinner and this did not deliver on that value. We received drinks only to never received refills, even on our water. Server was not attentive and left us waiting for 10-15min spans. Food was bland or salty and not ideal for what we wanted. It was a recommended Michelin guide restaurant that I would not recommend. Better options in Austin with higher quality staff and food. Looks like I'll have to continue trying option prior to bringing a group as this was very underwhelming for a 2.5hr dinner not by choice but due to slow service and speed. Strong recommend to consider other opportunities if available. Maybe it was an off night for the crew but I hope to return and see something completely different. read more

First off I will start with the main point. We had a large party and were told when we made the reservation that we had to do a pre-fixe menu due to the large volume of people. It was $86 a person before drinks for this pre-fixe menu and I honestly felt ripped off. The table wasn't quite ready yet when we arrived so we ordered cocktails at the bar while we waiting. I had a delicious watermelon martin and then they topped it with some whipped creme. It was good but very syrupy with the watermelon flavor. The table because available and we were seated. The first course came out and it was a delicious salad. The sad thing was, there was i plate for each 4 guests so you didn't get very much of the salad. The came out the sides which were a small bowl of charro beans, a bowl of noodles with a red sauce and a bowl of corn. The beans were so delicious, I grabbed every bowl I could get my hands on and ate those beans throughout the meal. The noodles were interesting and almost tasted like spagettios. The corn I didn't try but heard from others that it was pretty good. The main corn was put down and again 1 plate to share with 4 guests. There was chicken with some veggies and apparently some steak although I never got any steak. The chicken was soooo dry and flavorless. It was like they just put the chicken in an oven and let it cooked with no seasoning at all on it. I went back to the beans. At that time I left to help a friend with a wardrobe malfunction and went back to the hotel. I missed the churros at the end but heard those were not good as well. I feel like this was a sad sad meal to pay $86 for (plus my cocktail) to have 2-3 bites of salad and some beans. From other reviews I see that it is overpriced and not worth the hype. read more

I was originally skeptical that this place would taste like other "modernized Tex Mex" restaurants, but I was pleasantly surprised. Although the price point was high for many of the entrees, you can easily share starters and entrees. To start, we shared queso and esquites among the four of us. The queso came with handmade tortillas and was flavorful and shareable. Meanwhile, the esquites had a great amount of crunch and spice, but could have been bigger. Pollo en mole was a perfect entree to share for 2-3 people. It comes with only 6 tortillas, so we had to order a few more. But the mole had a good amount of spice and made the chicken very flavorful to eat, along which the avocado and cream. Dessert was awesome! I've never had a piece of tres leches where the milk was also laid on the bottom, which made it so moist. The churros tasted like they were freshly made and were the perfect treat with the dulce de leche. Made a reservation at this place for Saturday night dinner at 5:15 (yes, that early because we have a baby). Let me tell you, the Austin restaurant scene is wild. I looked a few weeks in advance and many restaurants were booked especially for outdoor seating, which is what we wanted. La Condesa had an opening, which is why we initially chose the place. The restaurant is pretty trendy and caters to a young, hip crowd (I guess that can be said for most of Austin however). We started with spicy margaritas, which were delicious and their guacamole, which came with these thick blue tortilla chips, also delicious. I did not however enjoy my barbacoa as it was very fatty and salty although to be fair I think barbacoa is generally fatty. My husband ordered two different types of ceviche and they were both amazing so that made up for it. read more

This place was a perfect choice for my husband and I's 5th wedding anniversary! Delicious food that is different than what you get at every other Mexican restaurant in Austin. Fantastic service. Beautiful ambiance with natural light. The food was incredible!! You have have have to get the Queso Flameado it was so incredible that my husband kept singing a little song about it hours after we left. The ceviche was off the seasonal summer of ceviche menu and it was so yummy. Perfect level of spice to balance the smokiness of the peppers and the acid of the lime and pickled onions. We also got a huitlacoche dish and the Sopes de Barbacoa. Both were very delicious and I was so excited to get to try huitlacoche finally after hearing about it on food network since I was a kid. Our server also surprised us with the desserts that were So incredible. We got churros with a Mexican chocolate dipping sauce and a dulce de leche dipping sauce and they were so good. But the real gem of the desserts was the chocolate mousse cake thingy with banana Ice cream. It was fantastic. There were these crispy crunchy chocolate bits with the mousse and ice cream that really rounded out the whole dish. Our server Ramses was so wonderful! Very personable and did everything possible to make our night special and it worked! We had a great time. The hosts were also so fun and nice. I love to chat with waitstaff and these people were all fantastic. The manager even dropped by to make sure we were taken care of. It was fantastic. The restaurant itself is also very beautiful. I love the wood and colorful elements with the natural light. Even the plates were nice to look at. My husband and I both said "I love the glaze" talking about the plates at the same time. I had booked my reservation for my six monthversary with my boyfriend a week back for outdoor seating before going (end of October) knowing fully well after triple checking that the weather will permit for it. Fast forward to the actual day, Austin weather took a turn for worse. Upon arrival, the hostess immediately asked if we wanted indoor seating and THAT was music to our ears. The food was delicious - I am vegan flexible and my boyfriend is vegetarian so we immediately decided to go with 2 starters: guacamole (super shocked that it came out in a big generous portion that we ended up taking home) and Sikil Pak (pumpkin seed hummus) paired with tostadas.
