There are a few options for grilled mexican chicken in this area with Pollo Loco being the more popular option. La Costera is an option that not a lot of people know about but they should not be overlooked. I have tried different places in the area and I will say that La Costera is my favorite! Location is not so inviting. Located in a small strip mall, I can easily see how one could feel unsafe picking up and/or eating here. But I challenge anyone to not judge a book by its cover. Just follow your nose and your heart and stomach will be satisfied. La Costera is a hole in a wall joint. They seem to be family owned and the flavors that come out of these chickens taste like they are a happy family that takes pride in their cooking. They have the grill setup at the front so you know what you are getting yourself into by just smelling what they cooking! It is so easy to over indulge because you can't help but have your stomach do the ordering for you! I always order their chicken meals but have also tried their tacos. Their grilled chicken is so flavorful and juicy! Not once have I had a bad meal here. I will say that if you are on a diet or trying trying to eat healthy, this place isn't for you. Because every delicious bite will force you to over indulge. But I guarantee you, you will also feel oh so right! English isn't their strong talking language. They have one lady that speaks good english but if she's not available, you can still communicate with them. Just don't expect to have deep conversations with them. I just moved to town from Los Angeles so when I say I know Mexican food I mean it. I feel lucky to live around the corner from this establishment. I go every week and I doubt that will change. Ok this place is definitely a dive hole in the wall. The outside windows have steel bars, the inside looks kinda dirty, the tables and chairs are all over the place, some put up and some down. The cashier was nice. I played it safe and got one of each type of taco. If Yelp would only allow different ratings for the food...the tacos were fantastic! So tasty and a lot of meat. My favorite was the barbacoa but the chicken and steak tacos were also so good! And cheap at only $2.50 each. Almost makes me want to give 4 stars for the food! Went to La Costera based on the Yelp pictures, the food looked sooo good. Ordered a quesadilla plate and a enchilada plate. The quesadilla tortilla was hard as a rock and barely had any cheese in it. The enchilada plate ummm was just not good. The enchiladas were dry. The rice was plain and tasted like nothing but cumin. The food was too expensive not to taste good. Okay so Doug Y and Thomas said I should go - so I went. Next time I'm just going to nod my head and then get in my car and drive directly to where ever they tell me I should go. This little gem of a taco truck is in the parking lot of a night club. Not sure if the night club is even open or not. There is a truck and then the grill. You see the smoke rolling off the grill as you are driving down the street. You pull up and immediately smell the grilling goodness that is chicken. The guy is turning and putting stuff on it - I'm not sure what he is putting on it - I didn't ask and frankly I don't care. This is some of the best damn chicken in the city. Moist and flavorful - the edges are black with the char from the grill and it is perfectly cooked. I opted for the 1/4 chicken plate - but it was more like 1/3 of a chicken - a huge breast and two whole wings (with the little burnt tips that I absolutely love). It comes with beans, rice, a grilled jalepeno, corn tortilla, and two different kinds of salsa. This salsa should come with a big huge warning label - if you're a white girl from the suburbs this is going to be kick you in your teeth hot salsa. There was no label. I looked and looked and there wasn't one, but there should be. I'm not sure how they cook their Spanish rice but it was damn tasty. It doesn't look like much but most of the Mexican Restaurants in Denver could learn something from this truck. I'm glad that it is close to work and will be able to enjoy this place often. read more

Well, the weather did not cooperate for a taco truck tour on this dreary May afternoon. I was a bit disappointed that we'd have to reroute our tour to some indoor locales, especially because I was really looking forward to finding out what was under the hood of the smoker at La Costera. My curiosity was further piqued after seeing Doug Y. arrive from La Costera as giddy as a 13yo boy that just discovered a stack of porno mags in the alley behind Barnes and Noble. After some nice seafood tostadas, I couldn't take it anymore. I don't care if curiosity killed the cat, I must meet the tacos that gave Doug Y. such a sly grin. The rain had stopped, the wind mellowed, and my son needed to get out for a walk. The obvious choice was to conveniently stroll by the La Costera cart to see what all the hoo-haw was about. Dude! Their smoker is huge. The aroma is incredible. They specialize in pollo asado and they do it really well. I'm almost never order chicken tacos because they are easily the most boring tacos on every menu in every taqueria around the world. Not here. Get the tacos de pollo asado and thank me later. This was probably the BEST taco I've had in some time. The chicken comes with an incredible smoky flavor, but is still left with plenty of juiciness. Served with a complimentary dose of cabbage, onions and a mild salsa, these puppies are perfection in a corn tortilla. I'm already daydreaming about a return trip. Let's just say this: If you go here, please understand the name is "La Costera Grill Chicken" It is not "La Costera Beef" or "La Costera any other animal". You come here for chicken. You smell the amazing chicken blocks away when they are cooking it. It's simply amazing! They sell 5 things I can tell: The actual grilled chicken itself, in various amounts simply plain; Tacos, Burritos, Quesadillas, and the best of all, Tortas. I'm a huge Torta fan. The seasoning on the chicken in all of the above is spectacular, the charred edges leading into an amazingly juicy bite of chicken with the most flavor I've had from anything that in its previous life had come with feathers. The husband and wife (I believe) and perhaps brother of one of them own and run the place, and they always have a ton of customers during the day and into the night when they close all too early. The fact they setup shop between a Family Dollar, liquor store, recreational marijuana dispensary, carwash, and 711 does not hurt their traffic either. Plenty of parking can be found in the shared lot at the Family Dollar / Liquor Store. They accept credit cards as well as good old cash, so there's no reason not to stop by and have some of the best chicken in the greater Denver metro area!
