Our go to spot for asada tortas and their bakery. Everyone is super nice and the items are decently priced. An asada torta is $9 and the bakery items range from $1 and up. The bakery is small with minimal seating and appears to be more of a stop and go vs a dine in restaurant. They have a variety of cookies, cakes and bread. Everything that I've had here was great. Picked up some pan dulce early this morning before my kids and I got our day started. We love the nice warm conchas with a hot cup of coffee in the mornings. Woke up bright and early and was at the bakery by 7am. I was able to get some super fresh warm conchas. Nothing better than some Mexican bread with coffee in the morning. Ummm...hello...why have I not been stocking up on pan from Esperanza's sooner. I've driven by here dozens of times but today was the first time I was compelled to stop. It's a decent size panaderia shop that has a sitting area, obviously they have pan but they also make cakes and have some food options. As soon as I walked in I was greeted and after I selected my bread she was already waiting at the counter to help check me out. I was excited to get home and place my selections on a platter for my husband to choose from. They are DELICIOUS! The bread and cookies are soft, freshly baked (even at 4pm they didnt taste like the leftovers) and the cone with whipped cream was sweet and delightful. I've lived on the Baja south of San Felipe and one of the treats we enjoyed was stopping at our favorite panaderia every time we drove through town. I have been disappointed with most panaderias in the States. I am pretty happy with this place!!!! We trigger pineapple upside down cake, cheesecake and the large oblong flat pastry coated in sugar. I don't know the names but they were all good. All three together cost $3.90. Naturally the cheesecake is NOT like the New York version. But it's good Mexican cheesecake! If you want fresh and authentic pan dulce this is the place to go! It's a family owned bakery and you can tell their passion for baked goods is immense. They not only sell baked goods, but they also sell delicious Mexican food. Staff is so sweet and welcoming. Definitely recommend trying this place out. read more

The best kept secret in Reno/Sparks is La Esperanza bakery. Every item I have tried is flaky/delicious/subtle/not to sweet. Really, really impressive pastries. I moved from the Mission of San Francisco. The palmeras, turnovers, and the "baskets" with pineapple filling are the BEST! and there isn't a single bakery there that comes close to La Esperanza. By far the best panaderia I have been to here in Sparks. The bread is always fresh, soft and pillowy with just the perfect amount of sweetness. The bread is tasty and you can definitely get a good variety for a great price. Although the bread may be delicious, I was disappointed with the deli. After gathering 24 dollars worth of pastries, I went to pay at the cash register. The cashier was talking on the phone while helping the customer in front of me. She was clearly distracted from us customers as he kept asking for condiments. When it was my turn she rang up some items but I wasn't sure what. Then I asked for a box so she went to the corner and spent at least five minutes trying to put a box together while chatting away on the phone. I had to go outside to tell my bf why it was taking so long. I came back inside and she was still poking at the box. I finally saw another lady and asked her to ring me up because the first lady was taking so long and how ridiculous it was that she's on the phone. So that lady rings me up on top of whatever was already rung up. I didn't care what the total was, I just wanted out of there and I'm sure that I was overcharged but didn't even realize it because I was unhappy with the service. Then she said to me that the box will make the pastries dry in no time. I thanked her for helping me but she just walked away as if she was mad at me - really? La Esperanza Bakery was a pleasant surprise. Their muffins, cookies, cakes and other Mexican sweets are great for that sweet tooth craving. I came here just to fulfill exactly that haha. I was also a bit hungry for lunch and didn't realize that they serviced more than sweets. They had tortas and menudo. Just note that menudo is only on Saturday and Sunday and they usually run out around 12pm. But they had other items on the menu too. They are pretty good. I would suggest to try it. I liked their tortas and I will be back to try out the other foods on the menu. But for first time visitors I would suggest trying one of their sweet pastries. The best time to get one is early in the morning because they are fresh. No need to worry about getting a parking spot they have plenty. Also the staff is nice and helped me out when I had a question. The prices for the pastries are great. The prices are fair for the pastries. The nice thing about it is you can just get one or get a dozen if you like. Usually I'll grab about 6 or a dozen. So the way you do it is when you come in you grab a tray and tongs, load up with what ever pastries you want and the cashier will bag it for you. Each pastries can range .50¢-$1.00. Really affordable prices for good pastries. And if you want just one get one. I love supporting local business like this. They do a pretty good job for a small bakery store. At first glance, It looked like all the same Mexican pastries I've tried in the past, and I didn't even care to try any because of bad past experiences. My husband chose 2- a custard filled pastry and a bread pudding. I tried the bread pudding first, and I actually was impressed. Eating the edge piece was even better. I would suggest buying this and making a vanilla cream or dulce de leche sauce to top it. The custard pastry was surprisingly delicious as well. This place has restored my faith in Mexican pastries. $15 for a soggy cake. My son surprised me with a birthday cake from this place and it was disappointing for all of us when we took bites of a wet and soggy birthday cake. It's obvious that they freeze and store old cakes to save money regardless of how it affects the customer. My son also got me a mini cake on a separate occasion and it tasted hard and old. I have been haunting this bakery since it opened. They always have a smile when you walk thru the door and the shelves are packed with goodies. Now the bakery has expanded with a meat counter and many Mexican foods we all know and love. I am making my way thru their entire menu and have yet to try something that I did not love. Sometimes, I wake up in the morning craving Mexican sweet breads and this is the place I will go! It's located next to a 7/11 in not the best area of Sparks, but this place has some delicious Mexican pastries! You walk in, grab a tray and tongs and pile all the tasty treats, your heart desires, onto that tray. There are no labels on the pastry windows, so it is kind of a guessing game as to what you are grabbing, unless you are familiar with that type of sweet bread. My favorite is this triangle shaped pastry, that is filled with custard. I am not usually a fan of anything with filling, but this scrumptious treat is my exception. The service is great! They have a giant window, in the kitchen, so even if they is nobody directly behind the counter, as soon as you walk up, someone will immediately come over to assist you. They are amazingly affordable. You can pile two trays high with more pastries than you need and still only spend around twenty dollars.
