A little mishap at first with a order I placed but the staff was really friendly and held themselves accountable for the issue. Baked goods are delicious, the prices are phenomenal and the quality is superb. I could not recommend this place more. They also have hot food that looked delicious and fresh. I received a piece of tiramisu cake as a gift so not was delivered to my door. I didn't know it was there right away so it was outside for a bit but I promptly refrigerated it and had it after dinner . It was delicious and very moist and a generous size . I bought a mixed bag of baked goods and they were great. Loved the empanadas in particular, both the cheese guava and the chicken. The tres leches here is not the wet type but like a cake slice, nevertheless was mild and good. I am very impressed by the wide variety and the price. My sister moved to Suffolk recently and she was sad that she wouldnt find a bakery that had all her colombian treats. Well I found a great one!!! La Espiguita is wonderful! Everything I purchased was delicious! My sister was thrilled. The Salpicon (fruit salad...but better) tasted just as she remembered from our visits to Colombia. The mini almohabanas ( cheesy doughy bread) was my niece's favorite. The empanadas were delicious and hefty, both the chicken and beef. The cheese stuffed bread was warm and also a good size. The lady who help us was lazy and aggravated because we asked for Splenda and half and half for our coffee. I also ordered a Chorizo w potato and I'm very disappointed with the chorizo because it tasted old and I hope I do not get sick. I hardly come here but when I do it's to cure my. I must say I've been coming here for years and the quality is top notch, the desserts are delicious and extremely reasonable in price. The breads are always baked fresh and when they have a batch already a few hours old they have them on special which you can't complain. Their colombian empanadas are very good as well! read more

CAKES ARE HORRIBLE. LAS TORTAS SON HORRIBLES ! I ordered a tres leches cake and specifically remarked to be extra wet with extra dulce de leche and no cream around it, all explained in spanish so they understood me better with no mistakes. To my surprise they charged me extra for all those extras but I said OK. But when I arrived home the cake was dry with almost no milk, full of that nasty cream all around it and with no dulce de leche. I usually buy my "tres leches" cakes there for years but I think this will be the last one. The cake was the worse cake I have ever had and I compared it to the cheap ones you find at supermarkets. Not sure if they changed the cake maker or if they don't pay attention to the customer order. I called to complain and for a refund but they said I should have returned the cake to the store, how in the world I will return a cake that it was for my daughter graduation guests ? so forget it, for that attitude of they keeping my $50 for an horrible cake, they lost a customer for life. This bakery used to be amazing years ago. Decided to give it a shot since I haven't been here in a while, now I remember why I stopped coming here. The almojábanas were literally the size of a quarters and hard as rocks. The empanadas you could tell wasn't fresh either. Wasted money. A place to get your fix of Latin American pastries, breads and dessert drinks, but watch those sugar counts. This is a palace of delicious and fattening carbohydrates. No health food here. It's usually crowded and fast moving along the counter because a lot of people know they've got the goods. There is a small sitting area for customers and they also sell Latin American crafts. If you like a good empanada, then oddly enough this is a place you NEED to go visit. Seriously, these are hands down the best empanadas Ive had on long island. And they are columbian style, so none of that flake pastry crap. These are made with that corn meal style dough (masa I believe). Filled with potato and pork. Served with some very tastey homemade sauce (be sure to ask for some, its free). If you're feeling adventurous then Id suggest trying some of their other hot-homemade creations. Unfortunately I do not speak spanish so I do not know the names of these other items. But one in particular looks like a yellow softball. Its insides are filled with similar filling to a chicken pot pie. Its very very good! They also make these other lighter colored items that look like an over sized empanada. They have a few different meats and some egg inside. Also very delicious. The best part about this place, you can go in with about $6 and eat a massive meal. Empandas cost just under $1 per and the other items I mentioned were around $1-2. read more

La Espiguita started out as a great bakery. I use to say there was little difference between their product and the bakeries in Colombia, but that's no longer the case. Little by little the empanadas shrank followed by the breva bread. I use to find quite a few brevas in the bread and now it became a treasure hunt. The chorizos are 1/4 big pieces of fat and the list goes on. I realize food prices have increased, but readies the prices and stop altering the food. My 20 minute trip to La Espiguita has recently ended. It's not worth my time and money. Sorry guys. read more

I am a member of a community Spanish class and we visited this bakery as a field trip. First, the manager was really great as he worked with our instructor ahead of time to realize that a group of students with beginner Spanish skills would be coming in. The place was packed the whole time, never stopped as people came in to get both their savory and sweet goods. At first, I tried the empanadas. They were pretty tasty. I only had two and they're really small so eventually I went back to the counter to find something else to eat since this was my dinner. I have no idea what it was called but it was a plantain, sliced down the middle with a strip of cheese and guava sauce. It was interesting. It was good...but still to this day I'm on the fence about it. I would love to go back but I feel like I would have to go back with someone who speaks Spanish to fully know what's what. read more

Upon arrival the store was presentable outside and in. The inside has food, desserts, toys, and even cookware throughout the store. The food was just a tid bit on the higher priced side however, it was good. I went with the intention of purchasing Cholado which is a Colombian drink mixture of ice, flavored syrup, and fruits. The drink was good however it needed more flavoring. I would recommend this store for anyone wanting to get taate of something different. Especially considering that this store is in a predominantly Salvadorian neighborhood you get to taste other products from other latin countries. So go for it and try it. read more

Meet the Business Owner: Luz Estella O.

Luz Estella was raise in Neira, Colombia. The towns population is around 100 people, but even though the town was small, Luz always dreamed big. From selling a couple dozen empanadas with her mother at her doorstep, she now has La Espiguita bakery producing and selling a couple thousand empanadas a week.
