Just found out about Mixto and tried it the day before they closed. So sad to lose a place like…read morethis, the food was so good and there aren't a ton of Latin/Caribbean restaurants in town. Sat outside and had a passionfruit lemonade, pernil rostizado, it was beautiful.

Although there were open…read moretables available, the staff seemed a little reluctant and initially offered me a seat at the bar. I preferred to sit outside, so I was eventually able to grab a table and a menu. It took a little while for someone to bring water and utensils. By the time they came over, I was already ready to order. I ordered the bistec encebollado and was impressed by the portion size! they give you a generous amount of steak. Unfortunately, the steak had quite a bit of fat around it, which isn't my favorite. When the food arrived, the rice was packed into a small cup, which made me think everything would be served hot. Unfortunately, none of the food was warm. Everything was room temperature and lacked flavor. Because it took a while for my meal to arrive, I got the impression that it may have been sitting out before being served. I ate it as it was because I didn't want to wait any longer. Taste-wise, the steak needed more seasoning, although the beans were good. Overall, the meal was average. After finishing, I asked for both a to-go box and the check. About 10 minutes later, the check arrived, but no box. One employee, William, really stood out. Whenever he stopped by, he was attentive, friendly, and on top of things. I appreciated his service and how proactive he was in checking on guests. Overall, the service had some delays, the food temperature was disappointing, and the flavors were underwhelming, not sure if I'll try this place again.

Recalling the excellent Cuban restaurant we frequented in Norcross, GA we met up with friends at…read moreCuba Libre. The decor is beautiful. "Like a Disney World set!" I said. Air conditioning was cranked-up high. I was freezing. And music was a bit loud. But we were there for the food. And here's what we thought: ** El Cubano is a pressed Cuban sandwich. I chose it because it came with a salad, what they call 'tropical chips' and a cup of black bean soup. The soup was flavorless, the chips -- are they strips of fried plantain?! -- delicious, and the salad, fine. The sandwich is okay, my husband favoring his more than I did mine. (Good thing cause he's getting the half I didn't eat, for lunch today.) ** The winning dish may be Levanta Muerto Seafood soup with mussels, crabmeat, shrimp, and scallops in a rich broth. ** Sangria is disappointing with barely present, minced fruit. Tasted like cheap and weak red wine. A half pitcher fills about four glasses. When seated, you're presented with a basket of toasted bread and a ramekin of infused butter. It looked like turmeric, but surprised! It was sweet, likely cinnamon-sugar. A nice touch. We arrived literally eight minutes after happy hour ended, so we missed their discounted drinks. As the server said, we would have had to sit at the bar, which I would have done but my friends likely wouldn't. Oh well. Anyway, service was fine, prices a bit high, food was okay -- doesn't compare to Norcross! -- and reservations strongly suggested.

There are big manual fans at the top which were pretty cool to see. The place also has a decent happy hour menu but only available at the bar. The table got bread and mango butter. I really liked how crispy the bread was. It had been pressed down very thin. I got the empanadas which were really good. The main dish (pinchos de camarones), had way too much salt on it. It was nice they had shrimp that also incorporated a kimchi salad. For dessert, the tres leches cake was a delight. I liked how spongy the texture is.

It looked so dim, moody and inviting inside, it was a warm summer day, and we decided, why not? I cannot tell you how terrible of a choice this was. We decided to sit in the back patio, because it was a beautiful day, but were quickly discouraged because it was filled with some unexpected guests ... RATS! Understanding that we were in the heart of Philadelphia, we understood, and quickly changed our minds and decided to move inside - but what we saw inside was even more terrible. We spotted actual cockroaches scurrying around the bar. We never like to cause a fuss, realized that urban places sometimes struggle with pests, and decided to stay, possibly against our better judgment. We ordered the recommended fish tacos (they were admittedly mediocre, but got the job done), and we left unhappy and under fed. Out of all the amazing establishments in this beautiful city, it wasn't our favorite.

The drinks were really good and definitely the highlight of my visit. The food was just okay and wasn't my favorite, but the great energy, drinks, and overall atmosphere made up for it. I'd definitely go back for happy hour and cocktails, even if I skipped the food next time.
