First time coming here and I was the first one in the door for lunch. I ordered my food and even thought I was the first customer I was shocked how quickly it was prepared and delivered. My first judgment of any Mexican restaurant is there rice and beans and these were outstanding. Next is salsa and it's sold as well, but i dont like salsa served in single containers unless you bring me several, prefer squirt containers on the table, for this I would like to take 1/2 a star, but can't. I also don't care for the order at the register and the flip around tipping that has gotten out of control. Restaurant is clean. Coffee was outstanding . Enchiladas were simply amazing, literally not a single thing I would change. They are more like tacos in the sense they are dry with no enchilada sauce on them, but dish makes up for that easily with the amazing rice and beans. The problem was that I ordered both chips and salsa and a bowl of queso and they only gave us enough chips for one but not the other. They said we'd have to pay extra for enough chips for both. I simply LOVE this place and have been eating there since before the current owners. Got to know the previous owners and family ( thus the name La Familia ) but there's a HUGE problem!! I just recently started eating birria tacos and I was OK with it ( tried it at several restaurants before trying it here. But EVERYPLACE else had " soup " for their consome ( am I misspelling it? ) Anyway when I asked the head host about how they make their soup it floored me because I was wondering how I got sick from eating it. But he told me they simply drained the grease from the ground beef and add onions and cilantro then serve it to customers for $2.50 a bowl!! Double whammy, I don't eat ground beef and I DEFINITELY don't eat grease!!!! So the fact that I ordered chicken birria and received a bowl of cooked cow grease it almost sent me to the ER! Not cool! So even though I still eat there I DON'T get their birria and just wanted to let everyone know what they are ACTUALLY being sold. An entire bowl of " Artery clogging GREASE, 'GROSS' " for a WHOPPING $2.50. For something that is supposed to be discarded but it's being sold to unsuspecting customers. I haven't had ANY other complaints about this restaurant and will continue to eat there. Great food and great staff. Just not so great selling bowls of " beef grease " for $2.50. So enjoy the rest just please steer clear of the expensive bowl of " liquid ughh "!! Please for all of your own health!! Have a blessed day!! The star rating is only for this ONE incident. This was an interesting little place. Not a fan of having to go and order in the back corner before sitting down. No actual menus, just a big screen TV you have to look at while being awkwardly stared at by the guy waiting for you to order. Also, wasn't given any silverware or napkins until after I was eating I think I was brought a napkin. Don't get me wrong the food was good. But not seeing this place lasting as it's only open in the morning/lunch. While I was in for lunch hour only one other table was being used by 2 people. We had a fabulous lunch at La Familia Cafe. I enjoyed the wet burrito and my wife and son had the tasty Birria Taco plate with a cup of consome, which was delicious touch. The service was spot on in the open space dinner room. Located in the downtown district, parking can a challenge but it's well worth the flavor blast. read more

This little cafe is a gem! Don't be put off by the prices. I too thought $4 was too much for a taco!!! Listen!! the taco is HUGE, FLAVORFUL, and obviously made with LOVE!! The location is downtown and the decor inside is very nice. There is very much a huge emphasis on family being important and I LOVE THIS!! I first had their gorditas for breakfast for take out and they did not skip on the portion. I later visited the actual cafe and the service was great! There was a little issue with the coffee maker but the owner immediately gave a comparable substitute and followed up to ensure that we were still pleased with the service. Ida's Taco was SO very good for lunch, after Market on Saturday, the breakfast gorrito with chorizo seemed like an excellent thing to try ! - it was! I loved the homemade corn shell! Just a delightful mix of scrumptiousness to tantalize one's taste buds. Mandarin Jarrito's compliment the dishes well. Just opened on Monday, our visit was Thursday. They occupy the building that housed The Flame Restaurant for 30 years and since has been may other. These guys finally remodeled the place with a nice laminate floor, natural brick, and a generally clean modern look. We had breakfast, Huevos Rancheros & a Breakfast Burrito. The food was on spot. The restaurant is operated by a Mother, Father, and Son team who are very friendly and accommodating. My next visit will be for lunch. I wish them the best. Loved it. read more

For being authentic and RIGHT downtown, this place has a lot on it's hands. As a new business, I would say the food was delicious with the traditional flavors and the size of the burrito is WELL worth the price. The service, they'll work out the kinks. When I went, there were two "servers", someone at the cash drawer, and for sure one person in the back cooking but I can't be sure if there were more. The line was not terribly long when we arrived so we ordered fast and the food came fast. I will say, once we had our food, the line was almost to the door of customers! We arrived around 11:30 am to avoid that, good thinking because around 11:45..that's when it became busy. There was a group that had placed a to go order, a rather large one, but that didn't seem to slow down any of the service. In my opinion though, the use of numbers for the customers might be helpful since the "servers" had to keep asking for peoples names. I am looking forward to visiting again! Having finished jury duty mid morning one day, I met my girl across the street at La Familia for lunch. Food: We ordered the Steak Nacho Salad, which was a special that day, for my girl, and I had the Chimichanga with ground beef. The food was plentiful and very good. In particular, I liked the queso & the guacamole that accompanied my Chimichanga. Fortunately, the sliced jalapenos had been laid on top of my girl's dish rather than mixed in, so once my girl removed the jalapenos to the side the rest of the dish was fine. Service: We had the experience of dealing with staff who were clueless and vacuous, like store mannequins. For example, (1) I made it a point of stating to the young man taking our order that my girl can't tolerate any heat in her food. Referring to the menu's description, I said, "Handmade chips topped with steak, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cilantro, onions and sour cream. So no heat, right?" He assured me there was no heat. So when the plate was brought to the table there were several ounces of sliced jalapenos on top. (2) After I made our order I paid in cash, and then stood silently, bemused, as the same young man and a coworker puzzled out the change for nearly 2 minutes. (3) Then later, back at our table, having been served our meals, we brought to another employee's attention that we had neither drinks nor utensils. The young woman who had brought our plates disappeared into the kitchen, never to return. So after a minute, I went to the counter to get our drinks & utensils. Impression: The restaurant has counter service as opposed to table service, and there are no complimentary chips and salsa. (Dine in chips & salsa are $3.) For lunch for two, with meals & drinks (no appetizers, no desserts), I spent in excess of $30. Which is a bit high though, I suppose, it is the downtown. Other than Taco Bob and - shudder - Taco Bell, every other Mexican restaurant in the area has table service (the now closed Nonla Taqueria had counter service too - but it had amazing complimentary chips and salsa with free refills). I suppose if the service had been more intelligent, we'd have been won over by the food. But clueless staff make a meal tiresome. read more

My family and I absolutely love La Familia Cafe. This is our favorite breakfast spot in Kalamazoo! The chips are always freshly made and pair perfectly with the amazing salsa. All of the food is fantastic, and just like they tell you they truly do have the best strawberry lemonade. Whenever I have the opportunity I try to come here because the service great, it is incredibly clean (which is incredibly important right now), and you can tell that time and care goes into making the food. I had seen pictures of the birria tacos online and knew I had to try them. I have never had birria before, but these were everything I dreamed they would be. I got the consume the first time I ordered, but decided I did not need it the second time I ordered. The tortilla chips were thick and crisp. I really enjoyed the enchiladas I tried here, too. My only criticism is that the queso is basically nacho cheese sauce. It was delicious to dip the chips in, but it was nothing special for queso. read more

All I can say is that if you haven't been to this place yet and tried their birria tacos with consome, then you are definitely missing out. It's like the mexican version of beef steak sandwich with au jus. The consome is a broth overflowing with cilantro, onion and avocado, at least from what I can tell. So delicious and makes a big difference when you dip your tacos in it. I suggest having a fork on hand. :) Food's yum, place is clean, and service is great.
