It's been a while, but we returned to this pathway with our bikes this time. We have ridden the…read morepath a couple of times now into and past Wakefield. During our latest visit, security was stopping walkers and bikers from entering the commuter rail lot and directed us to road side parking a bit further down the road. A sign there states it is parking for both train and pathway. The pathway is in good condition with benches along the route, a childrens park and picnic tables at one point and artwork here and there. There are many road crossings. Most are very quiet, but a few have a fair bit of traffic so do use caution. There is a lot of summer shade along the path. About 5 miles or so from the trail head are public restrooms and water fountains as you enter town. Shortly after passing this building the trail follows the road briefly. Just cross the road and at the top of the hill you will see where the path picks up again. I'm pretty sure the trail changes names depending where you are upon it, but it makes a (mostly) continuous trail for many miles. Public restrooms and water fountains are also available inside the train station if open for business.

The path connects to on-road routes for access to the Narragansett shoreline. We just walked past it in downtown Wakefield, right off Main street. In the summer weekends, many people use it for recreational purposes. My husband and I have been on it many times as we biked this part of the state.

You think it's someone's driveway, but you will see the Hunt River Preserve sign high on the left side. You would then follow the road to the end where there are a few parking spots on the left hand side of the road, just beyond the neighboring property. One parked, you can enjoy the nice walk around the woods...about 0.3 miles...The short walking trail leads through forest and wetlands to the bank of the Hunt River. The trail can be muddy after heavy rain. This is a great spot for bird watching. Dogs must be leashed and picked up after. Bicycles are permitted but the trail is not well-suited to bicycles

But there is a little sign-post for it and if you follow the little road and go past 3 homes, there's a tiny parking lot (space enough for 2 compacts - barely) and the trailhead. It's a very easy hike that takes you first through an evergreen woods, then opens into an easement for electrical power lines - but if you bear left at the first set of towers, you'll find a marked trail (East Greenwich Land Trust) that will take you on a short loop to the Hunt River and back. Admittedly, there's not a lot to the trail but it is nevertheless relaxing to see, gives a different feel, and is one of those lesser known spots with which you can show off your local knowledge!

Immediately greeted by a small pond, which is always a nice feature for a walk through the woods. There are stairs down, and a decent amount to be prepared for that both starting and finishing your trip. There are also some "bridges" over waterfalls with visible openings. Certainly safe, but just a heads up. I took a short stroll around the pond and then up to the left, walking behind the water. There are trail markers which is helpful. A nice quiet spot to enjoy a little time out in nature if you happen to be in the area; oh and parking on site which is always a plus. Can't wait to come back and explore more in the Spring.

Trails are cleared pretty well which makes it great for people of all abilities or families with smaller kiddos. There's a cool bridge beside a beautiful pond. Beyond that you can go to the right down to the rock structure remains of an old water mill (I believe it was a water mill) To the left off of the bridge, is a nice, clear trail that has some gradual incline. Along that route are parts of a kids story book that engages with passerby.

Big River Management Area, is a Big Area! We have been on several of their trails, parking in a…read morevairety of places. It's a diverse area and one of our 'go to' spots for getting into nature. Our past few hikes have been around Carr Pond. We drive down Division Street, to Carr Pond Road, and park street side. There are a couple of parking lots, both before Carr Pond Road, and after. Just depends on how long you want your hike to last, and where you want to walk. There are DEM signs posted on a tree and obvious signs that cars have been parking in this particular spot on Carr Pond Road. The hike around the pond has taken just over 3 miles to well over 4.5 miles. We usually wander through the interconnecting trails as the mood strikes us. It is important, when taking a walk quite this long, that you DO bring a bottle or two of water per person. You will also appreciate bug spray. I have forgotten the bug spray, and although definitely 'do-able', not quite as enjoyable. This particular summer, we have had a lot of rain and mushrooms are everywhere along the trail. A few large puddles have developed along the trail that are full of small toads (I just love these cute little critters). The trails are very well maintained for the most part and it is easy to walk 'around' these low lying areas. A few less travelled paths are a bit over grown, but nothing that isn't easily navigable. The pond itself is large with a variety of areas where you can picnic (bug spray), meditate and just enjoy the serenity of the pond. There are also a number of old building foundations, dams, rock walls and a historical cemetary. We use a phone app to track our hikes as we do tend to wander and it's a good way to see when we are close to our pathway out. After a few visits, you begin to recognize where you are but the first couple of trips can be questionable. The change is altitude is minimal with a couple of paths that have a good 'up grade' (or down grade as the case may be). You do need quality footware here as the paths are a variety of gravelly, rocky, roots and dirt. It change from one type to another on any of the individual paths. The trails are color coded if you want to stick to just one. The path width can also chagee dramatically from four person wide to barely one person wide on any given trail. It's best to be prepared for all possibilities. Most of the path around Carr pond is in shade but if you wander into other areas of the BIg River Management Area, you may be in full sun for most of the walk, so plan to wear a hat, bring sunscreen, have water and maybe a snack. Most of all, Have Fun!

Roomy and extensive trails that will loop you around two bodies of water - Carrs Pond and Tarbox…read morePond - but also many side trails that crisscross and branch off the main ones. If you're new to this preserve - as we were - better download the AllTrails app onto your smartphone as unfortunately, trail blazes are virtually non-existent and there's no map posted at the trailhead. But it is nice making your way to the two lily-covered ponds, though viewing them in the height of summer is tough with all the leaves and undergrowth. We intend to visit again in the fall (when the colors should be spectacular!) and early winter.

So don't let my 3-star rating put you off too much from visiting this place! If you're here for…read morethe Woodland Trail, you might be dismayed by having first to traverse a working farm with its attendant equipment, out-buildings, fencing, and compost piles (which is why I gave the overall experience 3-stars rather than 4) - but once you get into the trail proper, it's quite beautiful and peaceful. So peaceful in fact, that we had a thrilling encounter with a coywolf sunning itself on a large boulder! There was no danger to us - the coywolf was no doubt more wary of us than us of it (and was aware of us long before we saw it), but once it knew we spotted it, it leisurely got up and sauntered off without a backward glance. The Woodland Trail is fairly well-marked, has elegant beech trees scattered throughout, a babbling brook, and the loop can be completed in about 30-40 minutes at a moderate pace. A hidden gem in East Greenwich and my hat's off to the East Greenwich Land Trust for preserving both these woodlands and the working farm.

A historic farmland where you can walk around for a 1.5 miles through pastures and woods. Pat's…read morePastured main farm is located here and you'll see their pigs, chickens, and ducks hanging out and grazing. From the parking lot/trailhead, we meandered past the farm and into the woods. The trail markings are easy to spot and the trails were clear and super easy to walk. No huge hills. Relatively flat. Good for little kids, probably not too great for strollers, though. Bring your dog as long as your pet is on a leash. We saw two other couples -- and, unfortunately two garter snakes as well -- and it was great to be out in the woods and fields by ourselves. Quiet and peaceful.

Great set of well-maintained trails (blue blaze Duval trail, red blaze Polly's Rock Loop, yellow…read moreblaze Lynn's Loop), varying from about a half-mile to 2 miles length depending on the trail, and very walkable (the only drawback being that the Duval Trail is not a loop, so you'd have to retrace your steps). But the scenery is wonderful, the foliage, trees (oaks and spruces), and lots of rhododendrons and mountain laurel. Along the Duval trail, there's an overlook in which you can gaze through the trees to the open ocean and allegedly, see Block Island on a clear day (best to do this in winter when the leaves have dropped). The Duval Trails are another terrific holding of the outstanding South Kingstown Land Trust - what a great job this organization has done! The trails are adjacent to a historic Quaker cemetery and a fascinating place in itself to visit - I saw a headstone of a person born in 1799! Well worth visiting and exploring another aspect of Rhode Island's natural beauty. Do be aware that hunting can take place on the premises and so appropriate fluorescent orange vests or hats must be worn during hunting season.

Full…read moreof diverse trees (maples, oaks, pitch and white pines, hickory) and wildlife (we saw a large eastern black racer sunning itself on the trail - perfectly harmless and more scared of us then us of it!), this 2.5 to 3 mile loop will take you past many stone walls as well as the remains of the old Browning homestead. The trail also thoughtfully provides a few interpretive placards describing natural features along the way as well as tags labeling some of the notable native flora. A very nice appreciative touch! There is a convenient small parking lot at the trail head. Another fine preserve and trail from the exemplary South Kingstown Land Trust.
