I've been a member at LA Fitness since they bought out Bally's and I had to transfer my membership. This location was really nice back then. Their pool and racquetball courts are a big draw for many looking for a fully equipped gym. They've made some updates the past few years including an area that goes beyond your typical equipment - along with the class offerings that go with it. But their women's bathroom is in desperate need of an overhaul. The doors don't close all the way (they are hanging poorly and the lock doesn't fully reach across), the stalls are so dated, it isn't always clean - it feels very institutional. They need to reinvest in their equipment - having already started by updating their free weights. I'd like to see better maintenance on their aerobic machines upstairs. No pics allowed - I'm a strict rule follower when it comes to that one. read more

Horrible front desk employees especially the managers (Matthew and Arri) at this location. Predatory trainers. Dirty gym, broken weights and faulty equipment. The place is a dump. The stalls in the women's area is horrible! I lasted one week with the facility being so dated and tried to cancel and obtain a partial refund and they held me hostage and refused to give me my money back or at least a partial. Avoid this place at all cost!!! I'm not sure why the people there are refusing to request to get the facility updated. read more

What matters most to me at a gym: clean machines, clean bathroom, and sauna. Perks at this gym: two-level layout with cardio machines up top (treadmills, elliptical, stationary bikes, stair masters) and weight-training gear ground level, separate saunas in girls and guys bathrooms, generally clean bathroom/ locker room with plenty space (I've only seen the bathroom dirty once since I started going to this location ~2 months ago), pool, hot tub, nice staff. Suffice to say this LA Fitness meets my needs. I was trying to keep this place under wraps since I don't like my gyms crowded but, hey ‍. I often like being in the gym as soon as it opens, and it's such a treat when staff opens ~5 minutes early. Much appreciated - a little goes a long way!! I love that there free access to cleaning wipes. However, while some patrons do clean their cardio machines post-workout, not all do. So some machines end up with dried sweat drops and what not. Itd be nice if staff made cleaning rounds ever so often, to wipe down the cardio machines (maybe every 3 hours or so, just for example). read more

I have here only once a while back with a friend, that lives in the area. My friend is a member and has been for a couple of years. I came as a guest. I will say they are pretty good about cleaning machines and I notice most of the guests also try to clean up after themselves as well. I am not a huge fan of the gym, since it feels like a Petri dish of germs, just have to be extra careful these days. I mostly ever go to the gym to use the free weights, treadmill and pools and that's about it. Their pool is oddly right in the front and doesn't seem so private. I do like the jacuzzi and pool too, but not during covid. read more

Less aggressive sales tactics from trainers/salespersons would be the very first step. When someone states that are there because Silver Sneakers folks are welcome, there's a likelihood they have chosen the facility because SS is free with Medicare. By placing SS on their windows and in ads, many seniors only choose a facility because it is free. The sales reps/trainers go over a contract so quickly, folks do not realize they have opened their bank accounts to LAF. Medicare should reconsider allowing SS logo to be used when a facility is using that to lure in customers. In addition, the Health Department needs to perform inspections of pool, sauna, and facilities. read more

The most filthy club I've ever seen ! Place should be condemned, it is uninhabitable! The women's showers and the lockers room are unbelievably disgusting. dirty showers doesn't begin to describe what I saw, yesterday 4/30/24 . Shower curtains : so moldy it was beyond disgusting! as were the tiles, floors everywhere you look was covered with mold, soap scum, rust, garbage on the floor. To make things unbelievably worse they had a MAN janitor who has free range to the womens locker room!!!! This place should not be open ! I went there for the first time to use the pool. I will never forget back to this location ever again. I had been there when it opened and it is very clear they have not done a single thing to keep the place from falling apart! Dirty in here. Nasty floor. They are too cheap to turn on the ac. Hard to breathe in here. WAY TOO HOT & I'm thin & female. Can't imagine how the men, bigger people & menopausal women feel. They probably cancel their membership. They have a VERY Limited amount of dumbbells. No 12 lbs or in between like 17.5 like the other gyms have. Also many are missing. After just moving to Michigan, I wanted to try LA fitness out with their 3-day guest pass. They proceeded to give me a tour of the club, and then sit me down to tell me about a "membership sale" that expires today and that I should really just buy a membership. Since I just moved here I don't have a Michigan drivers license, and was told I actually couldn't use a guest pass without that. Beware of bullcrap sales tactics and being forced into a membership. I only come her for the Sauna and the basketball course. I've been here plenty of days at 5:00AM when they open and the sauna is only at 100 degrees when it should be at least 160. I've been here plenty of times playing basketball for an hour then try the sauna after putting the temperature at the highest setting before playing basketball and temperatures won't pass 120 after an hour of the highest setting. Also 1/2 the staff doesn't know how to turn the basketball court lights on and I just have to wait 30 minutes for them to accept defeat and ask somebody else for help. I've been in the sauna for 30 minutes and it only gets to 100 degrees, for a gym membership we pay a lot for every month I think we deserve more, enjoy half my experiences here and will miss the basketball court but will probably go to another gym at the end of the month. Been to plenty of EDGE fitness that saunas are always at least 140 degrees without raising any issues. read more

Don't get the personal training at this gym. You'll work with a variety of disappointing people, and be lied to about how easy it is to cancel a membership. I went in person to try and cancel, was told I needed to call someone to cancel, and then the person I called told me I needed to go in person to cancel. (Which I wasn't able to do.) Probably the WORST la fitness I've ever been to. The equipment here is old, dated, and there's only one machine for chest dips. Even the other pull up /chest dip machine cannot be adjusted to do dips. The weights are the oldest I've seen, with paint peeling on them. The gym also doesn't have newer dumbells. The one on 20 ish and Mound is much better (next to Walmart). read more

Pros: Like with almost any gym if you go at off hours you are guaranteed access to all the equipment you may need. The first floor is dedicated to weight training and the second floor is all cardio. This location has a basketball court and studio for classes as well. Cons: The equipment is old and it's very evident. Unless you are a part of the signature club there is no towel service. There is a gender specific sauna in each locker room however there is no steam room. Juice bars are available only at select locations. Overall: it serves it's purpose but nothing more. Then again you are getting what you pay for. read more

Time to update this review, I suppose. Same star rating (4) but now I'm actually a member, I joined shortly after my last review. So I've been a member for ... 2-ish years now? (since early 2015) I mostly go for zumba - I love the Monday (Olivia), Thursday (Rachel), and Saturday (Ellen) classes especially. On days when I go and there is no zumba, I end up on the ellipticals. They *do* have WiFi now, as someone recently pointed out to me, but when I'm on the ellipticals, I find it to be hit or miss. I enjoy using the pool / jacuzzi as well, but for two weeks this past December, they were doing something to it (improving it? not sure) so it was closed, which was a bummer. I pay $29.99/mo. and I can go to any LAF, but I know their most current deal was $24.99/mo. but only for that location (which isn't bad, I usually only go to this location though occasionally I go to Sterling Heights or Warren for zumba). Overall the locker room and workout areas are clean, too, and this gym is 5 minutes from work and my house, so you can't beat that. read more

Great sized gym. Not too big and not too small. They offer a large list of amenities such as HUGE selection of exercise equipment, racquetball, basketball, fitness classes, hot tub, sauna, pool, and day care, etc. The list goes on. Staff is friendly and not pushy when it comes to sales. Facility is clean and I feel comfortable exercising here. I enjoy LA Fitness! Locker rooms are very spacious and clean. read more

As with many in the Detroit area, LA Fitness took over my Bally's membership. Today was the first time I've visited one of the clubs. I was generally impressed. This new facility sparkles with weight machines, free weights, a three-lane pool, racquetball courts (a new privilege that I have gained in the acquisition) and cardio equipment. Locker rooms are clean and (yes!) carpeted in many areas. The lockers themselves are medium-large, wider than those at Bally's. The showers, too, are large and private. Staff members seem friendlier than those at Bally's. My only minor complaint is that there aren't as many cardio machines as I would like. In particular, this club is seems slightly under-treadmilled. This is a quibble at this point but I'll be watching to see whether I'll need to wait or not. Overall, LA Fitness seems to be an upgrade over Bally's. read more

I am a recent member and wanted to show the facility to my son to see if he would like it. If he did, I wanted to add him to my membership. So we filled out a guest pass, received it in our email and went to the location around 6:45 pm. A very rude Manager person named "Ariana" told us guests can only come in between 10 am and 6pm and we are late . I asked her where can I find this information on the guest pass and she couldn't show it to me. If the web site or email indicated such conditions we wouldn't come. She said we need to pay $20 or we won't be allowed and she is allowed to do as she pleases .When I explained her this is not right, she told me to remove myself or she will call the police. She ruined a beautiful night that we could have shared with my son, and left a terrible taste on my mouth for my LA Fitness membership. Now not only I don't want to sign up my son, I will cancel my membership. It is not fair to treat members this way read more

Let me say, I expected some BS but today exceeded my BS limit! I walked in and stood behind an older gentlemen who was talking with the person who was seated behind the check in scanner- waited for him to finish up talking about how his wife was already in there blah blah blah. He finishes and the person behind the check in scanner doesn't even look toward or acknowledge me. He has a whole chat, back turned to me, while talking to two other female employees, mind you, I raise my finger to indicate that I need assistance and one of the older female employees doesn't acknowledge my existence. I then speak up asking if there is an "Operations Manager" , because the point of my visit is to cancel my membership. I'm told he's not there and will not be until Thursday, however I can go to any other location to cancel, even in Texas! This club is very conveniently located. Unfortunately it is one of the dirtiest fitness clubs I have ever seen. The showers almost always have hair wadded up at the drain, the pool is often green around the edges, something is often broken ( it is often the whirlpool) and the carpet is just plain nasty. They are usually busy so I do not understand why the club is so poorly managed. It would also be helpful to have personnel available to help with equipment handling. I shouldn't have to hire a personal trainer to get help with how to use the equipment. read more

It's a good facility with a ton of potential but the staff treats you like garbage. The girl at the front desk genuinely doesn't want to be there and acts like your inconveniencing her when you ask her the most simple relevant questions and she's just the beginning. It's a staff mindset that promotes a general sense of annoyance over their job and seems like none of them want to be there. Furthermore their machine maintenance and cleanliness is horrendous. It's a part of a big chain and it really shows. Can't wait to get back to a gym that treats me like a human again. read more

Worst gym I've ever been to. Filthy bathroom rude and lazy staff outdated equipment!!

Every day, I watch the person that is supposed to be cleaning, sitting at the front desk watching videos on his phone. The same trash, personal items, and pieces of shower curtain have been on the ground in the men's locker room as yesterday and the day before. The same pieces of gum and dirty bandaids sitting in the shower since a month ago. Filth and slime growing in the showers is out of control. At least the last cleaning person would power wash the showers once a week. This guy occasionally sweeps at the end of the night and that's about it. The showers are never cleaned. The shower curtains go from yellow to black with mildew and then they are thrown away a month later with no cleaning and that is if they are not ripped apart by some childish patron that thinks it's appropriate to go through and rip every shower curtain apart. Then pieces of shower curtain just sit there on the floor or hanging by a corner for days if not weeks because the cleaning guy doesn't even check the area let alone keep it maintained. The only time I've seen this guy clean thoroughly was when the ops manager was whining about how the cleaning guy was going to get him in trouble with his boss if he didn't start cleaning. I can only assume the regional manager or franchise owner was making a scheduled visit. Every 2nd cleaning person that has started has seemingly disappeared after a week... my best guess is that they quit because they weren't getting paid enough to do all of the cleaning while the other guy watches tv. For almost a year now, I have watched his lazy ass become more and more complacent and take advantage of a place with zero accountability of its employees. He has gone from doing minimal work to doing zero work and watching movies at the front desk only to take breaks to announce when the gym is closing every 5-10 mins on the overhead speaker. The machines have never been cleaned and are in horrible condition... half of them are broken in some way. All of the shower curtains are destroyed, all of the soap dispensers are missing and I'd hate to see what it looked like under the mat in the sauna. I submitted a complaint a few months ago and of course, the shower curtains and broken soap dispensers were replaced and the bathroom was supposedly cleaned. Then some jerk spilled his protein shake all over the place and at the end of the night, the janitor is found bitching about how he "just cleaned this 3 days ago! And then people bitch about how it's so dirty!" Seriously?! You cleaned 3 days ago?! This is not your mother's bathroom that has 4 people using it a couple times per day... this is a locker room that sees traffic by the hundreds on a daily basis... it needs to be cleaned EVERY day!... and at least tidied up every couple hours. All of the machines should be wiped down and cleaned every day, at a minimum. It would be nice for the locker rooms to be cleaned more than once every couple months. An ops manager with some backbone that held his employees accountable would help... but I'm sure the problem extends even further up the ladder. The franchise owner or manager clearly doesn't understand the long term benefits of hiring dependable staff even if that means paying people a little more....and definitely does not understand the value of preventative maintenance. I first joined LA Fitness because of the low monthly gym service at only $30, and the quality facilities. I was hesitant at first to sign the year contract since I was planning on moving to a new city soon, but the sales guy assured me that there locations everywhere in this new city and I wouldn't have a problem. I then tried out the free session of personal training, enjoyed it, and they convinced me to sign up for a year of personal training as well. I should have noticed the signs right away. Every time I came in for a session, there were other members constantly at the training desk complaining about the service. It wasn't long before I noticed problems. First, when I signed up, I was told that I would receive 1 free training session each month, in addition to the three that I had purchased. As it turns out, this was off the books, and none of the personal training staff performed this session, instead it was a member of the sale staff, if they had time. Next, I had five sessions in a row that were either canceled or rescheduled without anybody notifying me. I would show up to the gym at my scheduled time, and be told that either the trainer called in sick, or they were in a meeting and couldn't join me at our scheduled session. I then found out that the gym had a very high turn over rate, and had difficulty holding onto any trainers, meaning just about every time I would come in, I would have somebody different. And very few sessions were ever available in the morning. I tried to complain to the manager, but he was very indignant about the whole situation, and refused to offer any solution. I then found out that the new city I was moving to actually did not have a single LA Fitness, despite their assurances there were. While I should have verified this myself, they were deceitful in getting me to sign up for a contract, and just about any court would throw the book at LA Fitness for these shady business tactics. Ever hear of reliance? I finally called the manager to complain again about all the canceled sessions, and the fact that I was lied to about their locations. His attitude was basically, "Tough shit, I have no way to tell if you're lying or not, there is absolutely nothing that I can do." Finally frustrated with him, I asked if there was a corporate number I could call. He in an extremely hostile tone barked, "NOPE! There are no corporate numbers you can call. The only thing that you can do is to come in, fill out a complaint form, and we will mail it to corporate for you to see if there is anything they are willing to do for you." After I got off the phone with him, I looked at the website, and guess what I found: a corporate complaint phone number. I have since canceled my membership (huge cancellation fee), and have been strongly urging others to avoid this gym. read more

I joined LA Fitness late last year after being a member of a smaller, 24-hour gym for quite a while. After going regularly for a few months now, I'm ready to write my review of this location and the Warren location, as I frequent both. My main motivation to join LA Fitness was the fact that they are building a new location in Royal Oak, less than a mile from my house. I went to check out their offerings in the pop-up informational storefront in downtown RO on Washington, and was impressed by the number of classes they offered, variety of cardio and weight machines, and pool. One thing that struck me immediately off the bat was how, for lack of a better word, shady the whole dues situation at LA Fitness is. I would prefer up-front presentation of fees and dues. I want to see a document that outlines all of my options, in writing, and I want all of those options available to any one who might be looking to join the gym. What you get instead is a piece of paper that the registration person then writes all over, crosses out prices, and seemingly arbitrarily makes up new prices. You cannot take that paper home with you to mull over your options. It's take those prices now or never, as they could seemingly change at any second. Lucky for me, the price I was offered seemed extremely reasonable (especially compared to the price I was paying at the much smaller gym I previously belonged to) and I feel like I got a good deal. I know others who haven't been as lucky. I have also not been approached once in the three months I've been there with anyone trying to sell me any personal training sessions. I would definitely not be interested in that. As for the Troy location.... it is newer and cleaner than Warren, at least as far as I can tell. It has 5 racquetball courts, and Warren has only 3. There are more cardio machines than at Warren, and they are newer, as well. The classes are not TOO crowded, but they are definitely well-attended. I've never not been able to get into one, even when showing up at the last second. The exception to this is the Cycle (spinning) class. This class fills up at least 30 minutes prior to the posted start time. If spinning is your thing, get there early, or consider going to the classes at the Warren gym---they always seem to have at least a few bikes open. I haven't been in the pool or sauna yet, and I don't have a reason to use the Kid's Club services, so I can't comment on those. All in all, I'm happy with this gym. I haven't experienced any pressure or uncomfortable sales tactics since I joined, and I like the variety of equipment available to me. Te ability to switch up the training (doing different machines, attending yoga, kickboxing, etc.) really pushes you to use different muscles and work new muscles, and I am glad to have the wide array of choices available to me that LA offers. read more

Hello This is by far the dirtiest location I have been to. The locker room floors are filthy, the showers are dirty , missing curtains in the showers? Is that a way to run a corporate business? Instead of the employee Jimmy facetimeing on his phone he should put his time cleaning up and touching up locker rooms and other machines in the building. Because thats what he gets paid for. No bags for wet clothes? Pathetic. Its sad that I just became a member no more then two weeks and this is the garbage that I bought into. Instead of having 10 people trying to sign up guests memberships, this company needs to invest in employees that keep the gym clean. A clean gym is key. I will be looking for other gym facilities that have a clean gym. I will also be leaving reviews on yelp, yahoo, google and any other sites I find.
