Ordered a Texas fajitas for two. The meat, onions and peppers was over cooked and dry. We got one small plate with the beans, rice, lettuce. Was not near the amount needed for two people. Even the tortilla was dry and crumbly. Was not a good experience. This is not what we have experienced in past. What a shame! read more

Horrible, me and my family of 6 (keep that in mind) went to eat in. They told us to wait 10 minutes for a table and to go outside. Not even 5 minutes went by and a white family of 7 went and they immediately got sat down. I don't really know if this was a form of discrimination or something. Didn't like the vibe. Service was okay but genuinely nobody's food had any flavor. Chicken and beef both tasted like the were boiled and thrown on a plate. Enchilada sauce felt like I was eating water and cornstarch, also 0 flavor. I normally don't leave bad reviews but you would have TRIED to be this bland. My wife and I were on a walk and spontaneously decided to pop in for some appetizers here. We ended up ordering entrées and a couple of nonalcoholic beers. Both of our dishes were really good... The veggies were fresh, the guacamole was tasty, the chicken was tender and much better than expected. And, both dishes had lovely sauce and flavors. The Mole was particularly good. Extremely disappointed with this restaurant. The sign was lit up "open". We arrived at 8:30 yet their hours posted online said 9pm. So we figure we had a little time to eat something (Sunday). We have always made it a family traditional to eat here (10+ years). Unfortunately, the waiter at the front (non-bearded guy) was not nice and said they were closed. Yet there were people in the restaurant. He wasn't courteous to offer us a togo dinner so we can purchase. It's very unfortunate to see that staff and management here has more than likely changed for being unwelcoming for us who were traveling for many hours. More so with a senior citizen like my Mom (88 years old). I am very disappointed that my Mom had to endure this since all she spoke about the trip was to have some good Mexican in Avon. read more

Wonderful staff, yummy food, fair prices, great location, plenty of parking and festive clean interior. Can't say enough good things, have been a customer for many years and never had a bad meal nor bad take out. This place is located in Avon in the center of Hatteras Island too. So few places with lunch specials, but they still have them and they are delicious and plentiful. Love the cheese dip, guacamole and full menu. We ordered cheese dip and guacamole to go for our taco night at home. I gotta say this- the cheese dip was great but the guacamole was honestly some of the best I've ever had- seasoning was perfect, avocados were ripe, and it amazingly added to our dinner. Highly recommend. read more

Going into this place, I wasn't really feeling mexican/tex-mex food. The food ended up being really good though and I'm glad we stopped. I got the tacos al pastor (without pineapple) which comes with a side of refried beans. The tacos came out steaming and fresh. Gave the whole family diarrhea! We got in late last night so decided to grab takeout (from the Avon location). The service was great (super nice hostess took our order on the phone) and the food was ready on time. It all tasked pretty good - not amazing, just good standard Mexican food. We all thought it seemed a little extra greasy. Less than 12 hours later and all six people in the house have the runs. We can't leave the house to go to the beach because everyone is hitting the toiling every 15-20 minutes. Not a pleasant way to spend our first day in Avon. I suggest you skip it! read more

Just OK...and barely that. We went today, a Sunday evening for dinner. Here is the plain and simple.....service was mediocre, seemed indifferent as to whether we were there or not, unattentive. The food was standard, and I do mean standard Mexican restaurant fare, nothing special that set this place apart from any other Mexican restaurant. The food that came out was decent in taste but was pretty much cold, not even really lukewarm. Everything tasted like it might have come from a can/jar. I am surprised by the negative reviews. Whenever I am in the Outer Banks, I always get takeout from here multiple times and almost always get the nachos fajitas. There were a few times when the portion size could have been larger, or the peppers needed to be cooked a little more, but those instances were few and far between. I have also had the nachos supreme (sometimes the shredded chicken is a little salty), fried chicken chimichangas, chicken quesadillas and ACP to name a few. The service was great. Quick, delicious meal fajitas. The restaurant was clean and tidy.

I had lunch in here last Friday and have to say for Mexican in the Outer Banks, they need some help. They were about half full and we were seated immediately, however after that it was at least 20 minutes before the only waiter on the floor came and gave us some chips and took our drink order. We then waited another 10 minutes or so before he came back and took our lunch order. I went with a combo that had an enchilada, two beef tacos, and chile con queso. Once the order went in the food came out pretty quickly. I dived into my taco's and they tasted funny. In fact, they tasted like fish... I'm not sure what caused this, a spoon moved into the wrong pot would be my best guess. but it threw the taste off significantly. I didn't finish them. The rest of my meal was meh... I will say the other two items did taste normal, but it was just mundane. No pizazz at all. We wrapped things up and left shortly after that. Next visit to Avon I'll be skipping La Fogata. read more

This is a pretty standard Mexican restaurant. Seated the minute we walked in around 5:30. The first thing you're given is the complimentary chips and salsa - if you need more than a basket for two, just pony up the $3 to get it! They want you to eat - it's a business! We had a vegetarian dish and a quesadilla dish (both pretty tasty)! All the staff we interacted with were friendly, kind, and professional. We decided on La Fogota because mexican is always quick and easy. We were questioning our choice when we walked in as it looks like a basement inside. It's very dark and just feels like aa dungeon. However our waiter was so fun and friendly and we were served so quickly. Our food was fantastic and they have some of the best queso I have ever had! read more

Absolutely disappointing experience. I visited with my wife, son, and my parents on before dinner time. The waiter was rude, appeared annoyed, and when I asked him to give us five more minutes he nodded and waited next to the table. I would have confronted him if my parents had not been there, but I did not want to spoil the dinner. Unfortunately, when the food arrived, the only one who was satisfied was my wife. She had a simple salad and though she had to ask the waiter for her salad dressing that he forgot, she stated that the food was tolerable. My dad's fajita meet looked dark, old, and he said he taste was rancid. My quesadilla was soggy and below average. My mom's food tasted like it was heated up in the microwave. Before we all had finished, the waiter asked whether we were done. Absolutely rude to ask someone who is still chewing whether to remove the plate. Stay away and visit other restaurants. read more

Great food! It's your standard "authentic Mexican" - extremely cheesy nachos, large portions. Burrito deluxe is really excellent. I liked the steak over the chicken. Please be advised - they do not have a liquor license yet (2 weeks to go), so no margaritas. But beer and wine are available. We chose La Fogata as our first restaurant outing after being home bound. We were greeted with happy staff wearing masks. When seated it was clear certain tables were off limits so there was at least six feet between tables. The mango margarita was wonderful; just what I needed! The service was so friendly and very attentive! My dish was excellent. The fried ice cream was good; but small portion size for what we have seen other places ( my husband loves this and orders it anytime he can). Ordered food to go. Service was good. Food was very disappointing - bland and tasteless. No salt on anything and very little seasoning. I got the chilaquiles ,which had no sauce on them, chicken was tasteless. I tried the beans and chips on others' plates and similar - no salt. I like this La Fogata location the least, but it's still good enough that we come regularly when in the area. I don't like the way they prepare chicken -- I swear it's always dry and stringy. But I do love the cheese enchiladas and their refried beans. Also their salsa is solid and has some spicy and flavor -- not bland and mild like the complimentary salsa most places. It's a good choice if you're on Hatteras and craving Mexican food. read more
