Alright. So this is my official review for La Fonda -- the restaurant I told y'all is connected to Abuelita's Desserts. Same location, same love, same culture. First of all, sometimes I don't even realize how Puerto Rican I am until it's time to eat. And then it hits me. Heavy. If you know, you know. My mom and I had been low-key grieving this old Chinito Spanish spot on 116th that we grew up on. That place was a staple. Birthdays, celebrations, random Sundays -- we were there. And the chuletas? Elite. The Spanish food was honestly better than the Chinese food, and it was that beautiful cultural fusion that only East Harlem really understands. Asian families who lived in Puerto Rico, speaking Spanish, cooking with that blend of spices -- it was magic. When it closed, it felt like we lost a piece of home. So ever since, we've been like... where are we getting our chuletas now? And let me explain something very clearly: when it comes to a Rican and her chuletas, we do not play games. Don't tell me you make a good pork chop and then serve me something dry or bland. No ma'am. I'm looking for: * That crisp but tender edge. * The smell that hits you before the plate even lands. * The cebolla on top. * The juices already doing what they need to do so I don't have to add a single thing. * That perfect bite when the rice and chuleta meet on the fork. So when we saw La Fonda attached to Abuelita's, we were curious. A guy inside was recommending dishes, saying he comes all the time for lunch. My mom spots "chuletas" on the menu and immediately says, "Let's try it." And I'm nervous. Because what if it's not right? What if it's breaded? I didn't want breaded. I just wanted it fried. Simple. Classic. Done correctly. Baby. When I tell you I was NOT disappointed? I have found my new chuleta spot. Perfectly fried. Flavorful. Juicy. That bite with the rice? Exactly what I've been missing. You can choose your rice. My mom got yellow rice with red beans. I asked for the rice of the day -- and listen, that rice of the day was a moment. Yellow rice mixed with little pieces of chicharrón, some plátano in there, beans -- just layered with flavor. That's the kind of rice you don't leave behind. My mom also ordered the corn fritters. Did I taste them? No. Because she tore them down before I could blink. And when my mom goes quiet and just wolfs her plate? I already know it's good. The ambiance? Beautiful. The bar area feels very Puerto Rican -- colorful, warm, nostalgic. On the other side, there's spacious seating if you want to dine in properly. It's quaint but roomy. Comfortable. It feels like somewhere you can celebrate something or just come in on a random Tuesday because you need good food. And the food? Delicious. Period. If you're looking for authentic Puerto Rican food in East Harlem that actually hits the way it's supposed to hit, go to La Fonda. Try it. Get the chuletas (trust me). La Fonda, Puerto Rican Restaurant is located in East Spanish Harlem on East 106 St. between Lexington & 3rd Ave's., closer to 3rd Ave. La Fonda looks small but when you walk inside they have a nice big long bar, in the back there's a small stage where performers play & sing Spanish music on certain days. Then you have the long dining area with many tables along both walls. The place is well lit, clean & tastefully decorated with its PuertoRican theme. The staff is bilingual, friendly & quick. The traditional Puerto Rican food is delicious, especially the tender Pernil (Roast Sliced Pork) & Arroz con Gandules (Rice & Pigeon Peas). The Cocktails are good as well. If I could give zero stars I would. Now granted, me and my group spontaneously patroned here after the Puerto Rican Day Parade, so of course we were mindful of how busy and overwhelmed the restaurant may be that day. We had no problem waiting patiently for our table to be ready. However, upon being seated, there were so many things wrong that foreshadowed how poor our experience was going to be. Firstly, we needed to remind the waiter to bring our drinks about 4 times. The first time, we received two cans of soda (there were 7 of us). The second time, they brought 2 more cans. The third time, they brought the remaining Sprite we ordered. They failed to give two of us the cups of water we asked for. The waiter disappeared and returned with a Single Red Solo cup filled with water and then rushed back with one more for me. In the thousands of restaurants i've dined at in my lifetime, I've never received water in a plastic solo cup. Would have expected such at a frat party LOL, but at a formal restaurant? Now it was abundantly clear that the deviation from glassware to plastic cups was likely due to the large amount of customers attending due to the PR Day Parade, so despite this initial disappointment, we were still optimistic and gave the benefit of the doubt in light of this. Then came the wait for our food. Our appetizers came quick. However, they arrived on paper plates. Again, we wanted to be mindful that this was just due to the day so we brushed that off. But somehow they forgot one order of Alcapurrias and never brought them when we reminded our waiter about it twice. (We later got charged for 7 orders of Alcapurrias on our tab when we ordered 2 LOL). Mind you, we were seated at 6PM. An hour goes by and it is now roughly 7:15. Suddenly, who I assume to be the owner/manager goes on the microphone by the DJ booth and announces "they ran out of rice". At this point, all we could do is laugh because it was clear this place bit off more than they could chew by attempting to serve so many people. It was clear their priority was Quantity over Quality. Rather than serving quality meals (especially given the pretty penny they were charging), they were serving tiny portions on paper plates to cut corners and serve as many people as possible. At this point, we were baffled that they "ran out of white rice and beans" because what PR dish is served without it? Well anyways, they announced they will subsititute rice and beans with gandules. Fine. Another 35 minutes or so and we receive 2 orders of Mofongo. Have you ever gotten the paper bowls that you use for ice cream at Costco? Yeah those are what we got. We got a little scoop of Mofongo the size of my palm (for $25) and topped with not even a full serving of the protein that came with it. At this point we assumed they were going back to the kitchen to retrieve the 3 order of Pernil w Arroz Gandules that they ordered.....Nope. At around 8PM, we flagged to our waiter that we didn't get the rest of our food. Of course, they forgot. Eventually we get our SALTY pernil on a paper plate and MUSHY arroz gandules that literally seemed like they forgot to bring the pot of rice to a boil on the stove. At this point, we accepted that today was just a terrible dining experience. We weren't going to make a scene, speak to a manager, or disrespect the staff that were clearly overwhelmed. HOWEVER, we then received a bill that 1) incorrectly charged us for 5 additional Alcapurrias appetizers and 2) charged their own 20% gratuity - was just absolutely laughable and pathetic at this point. Again, we had so much compassion and grace initially as any PR spot in NYC on this day would be hectic and overwhelmed. But like I said before, La Fonda cares more about getting their money rather than ensuring their customers are satisfied. We have no issue paying good money for our food, but can the food at least be edible? Can the food be presentable and appear palatable? La Fonda couldn't even deliver that. Bad service is one thing, but poor tasting food is another. Not to mention that myself and my partner experienced nausea and indigestion shortly after our meal, likely due to the excessive greasiness and saltiness present in every dish. In viewing previous reviews to see if this was just a bad day versus just a terrible restaurant, it's evident that La Fonda just sucks. Given that my group obviously was there in celebration of PR day parade, we would never want to bring down a local Boricua establishment. But this was just truly a joke of a culinary experience. Nevermind the disposable dining ware, but to run out of food and still try to serve people nonsense is sad. Rather than resorting to any means necessary to remain open and serve as many as they could, they rather should have not overwhelmed themselves by turning people away when they realized there was no more food. I would have respected that rather than paying for food I couldn't eat. Beware and stay away. read more

Service was not good, three people attended our table and they were all over the place, forgetting we we there, forgetting items it was a mess. We ordered two different kinds of monfongo shrimp and chicken the shrimp was good the chicken came with a drumstick (stewed chicken) not good, we also ordered stewed chicken and white rice it lacked flavor. We ordered bacalaitos which were very salty they took them back which was nice, they brought beef empanadas and the beef tasted as if it was soaked in vinegar not good at all. I've seen a lot of reviews for this place and some seemingly more negative than others. And while I understand some rare occasions can happen I've been here 3 times and have had amazing experience. Being a Puerto Rican in NYC and trying to connect with the island as much as possible La Fonda for me is my diamond in the rough. From the first day I walked in Isaac , Nancy and James have welcomed me with so much love , warmth and hospitality. Salsa is always playing , the decor feels like the interior of places in Viejo San Juan. The Tostones and Bacalaitos are amazing and the Chicharron de Pollo always slaps. I came to try the Coquito hot chocolate. Along with it a ham and cheese sandwich with powdered sugar on top and received a complimentary brownie with guava. When I tell you everything from the service to the food was five star, I mean I just felt like I knew the people in there for years. The restaurant had Christmas music playing and it was very early in the day so I got to see the whole space of the restaurant. This place feels like home. I would bring my family and friends here for a group gathering, breakfast, dinner, drinks whatever. It's was such a pleasure to visit a restaurant with that kind of atmosphere. I will say this, RUN! Don't walk to get that hot chocolate. It's gonna be around for a limited time and I ask the creator of the drink to keep it around all winter, but he wouldn't guaranteed it. I know for a fact I will have another before the new year arrives. It was so sweet and creamy and the chocolate goes so well with the coconut flavor and spices I'm drooling just writing about it. The sandwich was go to. Who knew powdered sugar would add a sweetness to go along with the salty taste of the ham and cheese. The food was so good me and my sisters visited on Sunday around lunch time and they served us their brunch service/menu. We were skeptical at first because it was brunch but it was some of the best Puertorican restaurant food I have ever had! The pernil tasted so good. The arroz con gandules was on point.The pollo Guisado, was very good. They also give you free fried chicken and that was really good. It tasted like Popeyes. The food was cooked to perfection and had flavor. The owner/chef was very nice came out to greet us and gave us a tester of some ice cream sweet that he was trying to work on for his menu. La Fonda has fallen off completely. Alcapurrias were perfect square shaped?! Not fried completely or even at all. The beans were served in paper coffee cups...why?! Came here since it is supposedly a popular Puerto Rican restaurant that's been around for 35 years but has changed owners twice. The wait on Sunday, the same day as the Puerto Rican parade was an hour long. I was ready to go elsewhere when finally my name was called. The owner of the restaurant had come out about 15 minutes earlier that the wait was worth it because they're not a "cuchifrito" and cooked fresh on the spot. Now hearing this I was excited to try the food. Everything was underwhelming and I was left totally disappointed!! I don't like being served in disposable plates, using plastic fork and knife and cups. It is so tacky and horrible for the environment. Imagine doing this all day and everyday? The food was not up to par and some were undercooked or overcooked, greasy and not exactly representing what the item should be. One of the pastellitos of bacalao had several pieces of bones!! The bacalao is supposed to be properly cleaned before it is prepared and put in a pastellito. The drinks served in plastic cups with a lot of ice is a rip off and spaces with tables not properly cleaned is also a huge problem! The bathrooms (2) were missing toilet paper, hand towels and floors were wet. Not properly maintained. It appears this place needs to hire more workers in every aspect for this place to run smoother. Cooks/chefs must be retrained to better prepare foods. I would not recommend this restaurant for so many reasons and don't understand why they're still in business. DO NOT COME HERE. We had a 6:30 PM reservation, arrived on time, and were told our table wasn't ready. That was just the beginning of this disaster. Service was completely incompetent. It took forever to even get a drink menu, and after ordering, a group that arrived after us was fully served before we got anything. Over an hour in, only two people in our group had food. When we complained, we were told most of our order never went through their system, meaning the kitchen didn't even know about us. That's not an excuse, that's negligence! After waiting almost three hours total, the food finally arrived and was dry, bland, and disgusting, yet somehow wildly overpriced. Went here for Valentine's Day waited 15 minutes even though we had a reservation and there was a whole row of empty tables on the right side.They ran out of chicken wings, octopus salad,, fish fritters, stew chicken ( pollo guisado) no straws and no coffee. VLa Fonda is cute, but for me, it did not meet the mark--full disclosure: I picked La Fonda because of a deal I found on Pulsed. Honesty, I had high hopes for this dining experience, but alas, things did not go well. When I arrived at the restaurant, there were not many customers. I was directed to my seat. One of the first things I noticed was the beautiful art that decorates the walls and shelves. I would say it gave the restaurant a real, authentic feel. The waiter helping me seemed to be very enthusiastic and friendly. I ordered a margarita to pass the time as I waited for my bestie to arrive. Sadly, the drink was terribly watered down and missed the mark. My friend arrived, and it was all downhill from there. I explained to my friend the finer points of the dinner voucher that no burger would be served or items over twenty dollars would incur a surcharge. My friend wanted the burger, which had cost within the deal price, but our waiter and staff declined to make it. We went back and forth several times before they decided to go ahead and make the damn thing. Sadly, they served a hockey puck and not the medium rare burger he wanted. Adding to our disappointment, the voucher was for a bottomless option, but we had to keep asking to replenish our carafe. My meal was just ok. Terrible Experience -- Poor Food and Worse Service I brought my family to La Fonda expecting a nice meal, but we left completely disappointed. Several items on the menu were unavailable, and even though the restaurant was practically empty, our food took ages to arrive -- only to be served cold. The pork mofongo was a disaster: drenched in liquid and more like a soup than the traditional dish. The beans were flavorless, and the arroz con gandules had a strange, unpleasant taste. For a restaurant claiming authentic Puerto Rican food, this was far from it. When I asked to have the poorly prepared dishes removed from the bill, the staff flat-out refused. I also requested to speak with the owner, but was told he was "too busy" to come to our table -- an unacceptable response to a paying customer. Between the bad food, poor service, and complete lack of accountability, this was one of the worst dining experiences we've had. I went to La Fonda with my family for the first time this past weekend. I'm glad that the restaurant is conveniently located to the 6 train. My sister made a reservation for the 4 of us about a week or 2 in advance. When we arrived, we thought that we were the only customers there at the time. When you first enter, all you see is the bar. Then, you turn a corner to the right, and that's where the seating is set up. There were 2 other tables with patrons when we were shown to our seats. Unfortunately, on the weekends, they have a separate brunch menu until about 4-4:30 and you can only choose from that menu as your meal. Also, there are no substitutions, but you can add a side to the sides that are already listed for a small fee. There was only 1 waitress working at the time, but she was attentive and took our drink/food orders quickly. Understandably, the food took some time to reach our table. However, everything was DELICIOUS! I will recommend the guava waffles and fries which is what one of my family members ordered and I was able to try from his plate. ;) The owner even stopped by to ask us how we enjoyed the food which was very nice. The staff also showed us their backyard and "party room". The only reason why I didn't give La Fonda a 5-star rating is because of the lack of options on the menu, the lack of air conditioning in the restaurant and the music. They seemed to have played the entire Bad Bunny album back-to-back. I'm PR and I do enjoy reggaeton, but mix it up a little. read more

If you are uptown and looking for a fun place to brunch with home cooking check out La Fonda! They have fun brunch themes like Flamenco brunch or drag brunch. They also have a dj spinning making sure you are dancing while you eat. And the brunch drink specials hit. Seating gets limited prime brunch time so try and get there early. We went on their very first drag brunch and it was packed which slowed service a bit. The staff was really good and I noticed each wait staff member had a flag from their country on it. I love pernil and this one was juicy, not dry, had lots of flavor yet not salty. I'm drooling while typing this. The pricing is a teeny bit higher than what I've seen in Queens but the portions are good. For those who like blue cheese and bacon I highly recommend their blue cheese burger the bacon they top it with was phenomenal. Insider tip: ask for a side of the homemade sofrito. They don't put it out on the table unless you ask. read more

A great hangout! We managed to try their empanadas, pollo a la plancha, canoa, pollo guisado, mofongo, empanada de guava con queso. Not to mention their cocktails are thirst quenching! They are so popular of their ensalada de pulpo and bacalao that they run out of it that day! The place is lovely! If you like to dance and party, they have this outdoor patio with a live band, but if you like a little intimate, you can stay inside or in a bar! Their staff is amazing! The restrooms are clean too! Amongst the many cuchifritos in El Barrio, this has got to be the Puerto Rican OG in the area where you'll get real down home meals and NOT corporate, ill-tasting or mass-produced food like you'd find at Don Coqui or Sofrito spots and billing it as "Puerto Rican". No here. Aside from some mismanagement of sorts and closure in the past, don't fret because the Puerto Rican-born owner is here to stay AND you will get a hearty and tasty meal. La Fonda's menu is stocked with those Puerto Rican well-known staples such as: Ensalada de Bacalao, Bistec encebollado, arroz con guandules, etc, etc, etc, etc. Their main door opens with a long bar+high stools and the dining room follows. There's enough seating with an elevated area that doubles as additional seating but seems like it could be a 'stage'(?) for live music nights. Hubs being the Nuyorican that he is, enjoyed his Pernil in all its pork glory with a slab chicharron on top. My garlic+tomatoey shrimp dish was plentiful and very good. There were some minor flaws like our tostones could've used a heavier smash to make them a bit flatter (but not too flat) or that my shrimp was served in an awkward bowl and our Piña Colada was weak. When my kid had a few on her hair and back and I them crawling up my legs. We sat there for 25min before even being asked to place an order. Came here on a Sunday morning hoping for a good brunch. Definitely did not receive that. We walked in and even though we were the only ones and had a reservation ahead of time, we waited 15 mins to even get seated when doors opened at 12. We didn't get any menus when we sat down and waited for a long time. When we finally got menus probably at 20 mins after, the server informed us that rice wasn't ready. We ordered the appetizer platter they were advertising for $65, and it took another hour to get to our table. Throughout the wait, the restaurant was still setting up and didn't come to take our order for actual brunch food. When we got the appetizer platter, we tried to order. We tried to order the plantain Benedict and she told us the kitchen still wasn't ready to take orders. She never came to fill our waters or Check on us, even though we were the only ones there. They had already been opened for an hour and a half and nothing was ready. At that point, the owner came out and informed us a free sandwich was being made for us because we had already been waiting so long. After 30 mins later, the sandwich was still not out. We asked for the check and 10 mins later it still was not brought out. I had to get up and ask for the check again and it just felt like they tried to keep us there until they were ready in the kitchen. We were there for almost two hours and we were just done at that point. They kept saying a few more mins, and it would turn a long time. The food that we did get, was good. But it's not worth it to come back. I did also see a table or two also get up and leave before we did. If you're not ready to take orders in your kitchen, I wouldn't give customers false hope and turn on your open sign. read more

We waited about 10 mins to be seated which was fine, the host had mentioned it would be few minutes for seating . The customer service was poor. I ordered from the app "Too Go Go." What they gave me was inedible. I waited over 40 minutes for chicken scampi and white rice. What bothered me most was that someone else received their food at the same time as me. I believe this was an attempt to discourage me from patronizing their business. La Fonda: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly... As they say, you always give 2 compliments before giving constructive criticism. We arrived on time and were sitted right away with a very friendly staff crew. The place was cute, and the bathrooms were clean. Onto the Bad.... We immediately gave our drink order and food selections as we were Hangry after a long day of work. Our order was taken at 7:10pm. The order was repeated to us to make sure everything was correct. We were celebrating our Christmas exchange, and we were talking and having a good time. The place was not crowded for a Saturday night. it should have been our 1st clue, but I digress. 7:45 pm hits, and we still do not have our drinks nor our food. We ask and are told that food is being prepared to please be patient. Okay, we are thinking we are going to get some really great food. We got our drinks about 8pm. I got the mango Loco, which is supposed to be spicy. Drink was not spicy, nor did I taste any mango flavor, but ok, I won't get that one next round. We drink our drinks and again ask about our food. It's coming out, they said. Food is finally coming out at a snail pace. Six of us ordered meals. I ordered the fried pork chops with pigeon pea rice and tostones (extra crisp). Four of our dishes came out with minor issues we didn't even bother with. My tostones came out when I was done with my not so great food, which I refused because I was done with my meal. We were still missing 2 meals, which we kept asking about, and were told that it would be coming out soon. It is past 9 pm now, and we are finally out of patience. Bartender comes to us with receipt showing us that wait staff (who was new) did not, in fact, place all 6 food orders. Okay, what!!! Why were we told the food was coming? We asked multiple times. Finally, the chef comes out. He tells us that his wait staff is new and that the complete order was not placed. He apologized and said he would make the food immediately. Meanwhile, we had waited 2 hours plus to get our order, which we placed at 7:10 pm. He said he would give us a discount, but he stood by his workers as we all started for the 1st time somewhere in time. We absolutely understand that, but why have a new person take an order from a large table. Mind you, she repeated the order to us in front of another staff member. The last 2 orders came out. One girl said her food was ok. The other had ordered a monfongo, which was more like mangu. They finish their meals, and we are asked if we would like anything else. Absolutely not! They clear the table, and the check was immediately brought out. We were charged for the tostones I sent back and an extra shot of tequila we did not have. I love that it's usually quiet. Service is not always fast but servers are always friendly. Thank you to my bartender who went to the back to get a blender because even though "Piña Colada" wasn't in the menu , he made me one anyway and it was DELICIOUS ! read more
