I'm so disappointed I really wanted to like it. My rice was mushy and overcooked. The beans were flavorless and thick like they came straight out the can. My quesadilla had a hair in it too. The hot sauce was watered down and not spicy. The queso tasted like water too. OMG peeps, this place is da bomb! AUTHENTIC Hispanic food, and cooked to freakin perfection. Hubby had the Mojarra (tilapia) which is flash fried Whole & the fillets just flaked off. Steamy and deeeeee-lish. I had a beef empanada, which was hand made FREEESH! And not sloppy joebeef folks, strips of asada....holy cow yum. Went back a 2nd time & STILL amazeballs - and pleasantly not the typical next-day 'stuff' after this type of food. This time had a chicken Empanada (aka. Quesadilla Frita as I learned this trip) and hubby had the same fish -- amazing food & fantastic service!!!! Very authentic! Best Mexican food we have found in the area. Run by a family who are super sweet. We got chicken and beef tacos that were outstanding and so fresh. Wonderful little find in Wilmington. Incredibly fresh and authentic Mexican food. Service was outstanding from Sandy and her mom and crew were in the back staffing the kitchen. I had both a carnitas and pork street taco with cilantro and onions, rice and beans, and my husband had enchiladas mainiacas. Tortillas were home made and everything was fabulous. I really wanted to love this place, especially given the fact Mexican food is one of my favorites but this was not the case. Disclaimer, my wife and I were the only people in the restaurant on this Tuesday night, which I thought was odd given the taco Tuesday popularity here in America and in a college town. After seating ourselves and giving a drink order to our surprise they serve bottled drinks only, to include water.... I also ordered a horchata but never received it throughout my meal and upon checkout it was not acknowledged. Our tacos were flavorless, meat overcooked, and very chewy a great disappointment to say the least. As far as flavor goes I would say Taco Bell's tacos taste better. After getting our food we never saw the server again until we walked to the front counter to ask for the check. Sadly disappointed and will not be returning. it may have been a different story if the food was really good or the service was great but both were subpar. read more

I Had some really good tacos here at La Güera, it's a little tough spot to locate as there is no big sign or anything to direct you to it. It's located in the Gordon Road Station strip mall type deal where the Domino's Pizza and Lucky Joe's coffee shop is located. I had al pastor & carnita tacos, both were pretty good with great flavor, tacos are on homemade corn tortillas topped with onion & cilantro, the al pastor being my favorite of the 2. Special thanks to Jon D. for recommending this hidden gem! I ended up here on Cinco de Mayo because I wanted Mexican food but didn't want to deal with the crowds of some other more popular local restaurants. My friend ordered the ceviche tostados and I ordered the fried tilapia plate. Both were amazing! The ceviche was light and fresh and the fish plate was huge and perfectly seasoned. Service was wonderful and I can't wait to return to try more items on the menu. My friend was disappointed they don't serve alcohol but I loved the Mexican soda. read more

So I dropped into this place for what was effectively brunch. My son and I were looking for a place for breakfast and the places in the area were all full. So, his Google bubble popped this up on his radar. I doubted it was open at 9.30am, but I was wrong. Pulled into the lot, nearly confused myself with the Mexican grocery store next door, but sorted it out and wandered inside. And the place was perfect. The chalkboard with daily specials was entirely in Spanish. The menus were nice enough to print English as a second language. The tables were clean but well used and the kitchen had women singing along to a tune on the radio. I was the most Anglo person in the place. This is what I call a good restaurant, where the food is still from the street like you find in little Mexico or see in Rick Bayless tours. This is not that Americanized Mexican food you get at Chipotle or the others. If you like the latter, open your taste buds and take a trip to Mexico. It's different, but worth it. I settled in, waitress came over and was attentive and hooked me up with drinks and menus. Water came with ice and a cup and I was thankful for it. I saw mole as and option on the enchilada followed by reference to Oaxaca specialties and grinned from ear to ear. I ordered the enchiladas maniacas with chicken and mole and my son, knowing that smile, followed suit. We were not disappointed. After a brief disappearance by the waitress, she returned to remind us that mole had nuts and gluten in it. I chuckled, smiled and noted, "I certainly hope so," and told her this was fine. So, you're warned, and I'm sad for the souls that need that warning, because you are missing out on great mole and I'm sorry for your loss. What greeted us after a wait was exactly the brunch I needed. Two eggs perched over Spanish rice, refried beans, a little tomato and lettuce, three corn tortilla enchiladas smothered in mole, sour cream and two little fried chicken tenders perched on the enchiladas with a basket of grilled bread on the side. I am still full and feeling the pepper high from that dish hours later as it warms my soul. This is the cooking I chase. So, it was exactly what I needed. And I will be back whenever I can. And, for those not familiar, when you are finished please walk to the cash and pay. You will be left to savor your meal, as it is poor manners to interrupt you once served. Now go eat my friends, and come hungry. I need room for the flan next time. read more

My husband and I tried this place because we live close by and we're VERY happy we did. It's one of the top places we go when we want to get food out instead of cooking at home. I'm the furthest thing from an expert on Authentic Mexican, but La Guera has a very different flavor from the kind of American-Mexican place I'm used to and that's a good thing! No, they don't serve everyone tortilla chips as an appetizer as soon as you sit down. But if you really want chips, you can order them specifically. And they're good, especially with their guacamole. Easily, the best authentic Mexican restaurant in Wilmington. Good menu with numerous choices meats for the dishes including; Tripa, Lengua, Chorizo and all the regular favorites. The price is good, but be sure and ask about the combinations that were accidentally left off the currently printed menu.
