First time coming to La Iguana azul and loved everything from start to finish from the drinks to tacos (I ordered the Azteca tacos ... highly recommend, and my wife ordered chorizo tacos , both were outstanding) and of course the Tres leches cake and Mexican coffee . Very friendly service and love the atmosphere (extra points for the lucha masks ) probably my favorite restaurant on the island . While visiting NY from SC my daughter recommended this place. Apparently she and her now husband used to go here often. It had been a while since they came however. The food was disgusting. The chicken was rubbery and flavorless. The service was even worse. The owner waited on us that day. The place was empty. He was rude. My mother in law didn't like her food so she sent it back. He brought something else. She ate it even though she didn't like it. Everyone in the group disliked the food. My daughter kept saying she didn't understand why he was being so rude. He is usually so nice. Maybe he just didn't like out of towners. Who knows. The overall vibe of the place was nice and I love the linen on the tables. The music was 80's music. I commented that I liked the music to the owner and he said oh you like it?? I am gonna change it. Not sure if he was joking but he looked serious. The music did go to a different kind after he said that. When we go back to Staten Island we will not be visiting this place again. I've come here many times and the staff is always very friendly, music is always great, and food is very good! I usually get the steak with onions and a side of rice and beans which is delicious. This time I got the pork and pineapple tacos which I wasn't crazy about. However, the rice and beans were very good as usual. Also, the chips with guacamole is a must have, it's so delicious and creamy! My partner got a mango margarita which came in a super cute skull glass, he said it was very good and strong! The food here is 5/5 delicious. I've always had amazing food here. I highly recommend ghe fried calamari appetizer- it comes with the most creamy green crema sauce to dip. The food is always out of this world. The weekday happy hour specials are fantastic. The owner and bartender know my friend and I by name and even who likes which hot sauce and puts them in front of us accordingly when the food comes out. Best margaritas. I've been here about a half dozen times & the food is consistently good. The service is friendly (unfortunately, depending on who your server is, things can suffer a bit on a busy night. As I experienced for the first time, once my food came to the table, the young lady who served us vanished. I was hoping to order another pitcher of margaritas, but she never showed back up! Ended up drinking the water that we got in the beginning, until that was all gone. I even had to ask another hardworking gentleman who was attentively taking care of other tables for more water, which he obliged. He even cleared the table for us. Still no sign of my server. We waited another 10 minutes or so before going to the bar & settling the check. Hoping this was an isolated incident, but it was very offputting, particularly since were regulars. I removed a star based on this experience. I won't rule out ever coming back, but I'm certainly going to take a hiatus on this place for a while. It's a shame, because those margaritas are fire!!.) & the place is lively, without being overwhelming. I went for the first time on a Saturday night & while it was busier than on my other visits, there was no change in food or drink quality. I did have to wait a few extra minutes for drink refills, as the bar was clearly getting bombarded with drink orders, but it was nothing too outrageous & when the drinks did arrive, they were on point! I highly recommend the house margarita! There were upgrades on the menu, but I opted for the basic & can't imagine it being any more amazing than it was! La Iguana Azul is one of Staten Islands best kept secrets. I found out about this spot from a friend and glad I did. We randomly tried it out on Fathers Day and it wasn't crowded at all. Located in Great Kills you really wouldn't notice it, and it's actually so underrated. The food is authentic Mexican and plain delicious. I didn't happen to get the name of our waiter but he was so friendly and funny, he also made a killer Jalapeño margarita. This is definitely a place I would frequent often, and the prices are great. Most of the island frequents another Mexican spot (which I frequent too) but this is definitely a must go. read more

Cannot rave enough about how much I LOVE this spot!!! La Iguana Azul is the place to be for authentic Mexican cuisine, as well as getting that real feel of dining in a Mexican Restaurant. The decor is on point and the staff is super friendly. We dined outdoors in their backyard seating which was beautifully decorated with colorful banners and plants. We had to start off with drinks, we specifically went for Margarita Monday. We ordered a Coconut Margarita on the rocks, as well as a Mango Margarita on the rocks and let me tell you, these were the size of our heads!!! & were one of the best margaritas we've ever had. We started with chips & guac as our app which was A1, the guacamole was so flavorful and creamy. As for our entrees, we ordered the Enchiladas and the Mexican style Quesadillas (Tika aka Chicken and Sauce). The food was delicious with every single bite, filled with so much flavor. We loved our margs so much we had to order another round of drinks, this time I tried the Strawberry Mojito which was just as incredible as the Margarita, with super fresh mint. Went here for the first time with my boyfriend on a late Wednesday night. Manuel was our waiter and he was excellent from the second we walked in. They had around a half hour or so to close and he made it seem if we got there early in the evening. I had a margarita and we shared tacos and a chicken dish. I was super excited to try this place since my family comes here pretty often. We place an order for pick up and I was unfortunately super disappointed. My mom told me to order the chunky guacamole because she said it's 10/10, we ordered that, along with several entrees. It was the most bland guacamole I've ever had. Absolutely no seasoning at all, just tasted like mashed up avocado with diced tomatoes. Maybe someone forgot to add seasoning and lime. I ordered the chicken tostadas, which again I was super excited to get. The chicken in my tostadas was chicken skin that was super slimy, not crispy, and basically inedible. Looked like chewed up chicken. Super disappointed. Another thing that really upset me was that we were charged more for our food than we were supposed to. On their website online it said the prices were cheaper. The tostadas and quesadillas were listed for $10 each. The guacamole and chips are listed for $7. So we had an idea in our head for a price when we went to pick it up. When I went to pick up my food, the staff member told me the total and I was shocked to hear how expensive. I told him it might be a mistake. The gentleman then proceeded to tell me they RAISED the prices and showed me their menu in the restaurant. He said the prices online were never updated. I told him they should honor the online prices and they didn't. I know it's a few dollars more but that's not the point. I wouldn't mind paying for a few dollars, it's just rude when you see the menu items listed on their ACTIVE website for a lower price and they use the excuse of never updating them. I definitely think is the wrong move for a business to make to not honor their online prices. So instead of paying $10 for the entrees, I got charged $12.48 for each. And instead of $7 for guacamole, I got charged $10.40. Plus tax. Not sure for the odd number prices but that's what it says on my receipt. Ended up paying over $50 for bad food. Super disappointing. We came here on a Friday and sat outside and it was such a beautiful night and my boyfriend and I had such an amazing time. The al pastor tacos were my favorite and we had so many margaritas, they were so yummy!!! Our waiter was extremely nice and accamodating, he didn't rush us to finish and encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted even though they had a busy night. I was looking for a new place to eat while visiting my family in New York and took a shot with Iguana Azul. When you enter they have a lot of cute decor and interestingly EDM music blasting. They were very accommodating with our food requests. in terms of margaritas - they didn't have agave which was a little disappointing. We ordered the nachos, Tostadas, Huarache, enchiladas. Everything was delicious and fresh and portions were amazing. My only complaint was the enchilada sauce was a little too acidic/sour. Fantastic dining experience. The layout of the restaurant makes you feel like you're in Mexico without having to travel. I always order the chorizo sandwich which is amazing but this time I wanted a hamburger and it was enjoyable. The staff is always friendly and attentive. I once had a shot of Don Julio 1942, not only was the tequila great tasting but not as expensive as most would charge. They'll see more of my business in the future. read more

You know a place is good when you live in a completely different state, have only had delivery from the restaurant and find yourself craving their food. Living in Hawaii where there's a shortage of authentic Mexican food and an abundance of Taco Bells, one needs to be grateful for the great weather and look forward to trips back to see family where at least one meal from La Iguana Azul is guaranteed. I've tried their burritos, chilaquiles, enchiladas and their nachos all of which are delicious, but there's something about their nachos that has me in the middle of the day on a Tuesday writing a review as I fat girl fantasize about eating them in a few weeks. Some of their dishes are spicier than others and I pussed out of finishing the chilaquiles because my head was on fire, but they were delicious none the less. Delivery is usually pretty fast, and the orders have always been correct when I've been around. Maybe one visit back I'll get to see the inside of the restaurant too. read more

I've never been disappointed by their food. We found this place on yelp when trying to figure out what to eat...not knowing we gave it a try and I all I have to say...Sorry guys, food was toooo darn good and we were hungry, NO PIcS, but trust me when I tell you, the food was VERY tasty and delicious. We started with chorizo nachos and steak nachos, yummy! My wife had Tinga tostada and she was humming it was that good. My daughter had a steak burrito, she was sad when it finished but was very full. My son had the steak sopes...all he kept giving me was the thumbs up!! I had the tinga huarchas...uummm, so tasty!! Service is great, ambiance is awesome but the food is terrible. The chicken tacos were made with a delicious sauce on the side. You need to drown the taco in sauce to make it palletable because the chicken was boiled. We tried the chicken fajitas which looked great, but the rice was undercooked and the chicken had absolutely no seasoning. I tried this place years ago, and the food was better. Went here for Cinco de Mayo, made a reservation for 23 people. We arrived at 6 pm and didn't receive a menu until we asked for one at 7:15pm. It took an hour to get our first round of drinks, we finally got food at 9 pm. But this is all expected being how busy they were and it was cinco de Mayo,but then this is where it got worse... they had a DJ and about 4 tables of people including us were all just getting food hours after waiting, and they turned on smoke machines that blew smoke right in our faces. The older adults at my table couldn't breathe and I am pregnant and had to stop eating and take my food to go because the restaurant became filled with smoke so bad from the outside it looked like it was on fire. Why would you fill a restaurant with smoke when people are just finally getting their food? The table next to us had to go outside for air as well and they still didn't get any food at all. All they cared about was the 15 people at the bar having a club experience rather than the 5-7 tables of people paying good money to have a nice meal. Holiday or not, I will never eat here again. The manager or whoever he was knew I was pregnant , he walked by and hit me in the head with a chair he was trying to carry above me and didn't even stop to apologize, and he never tried to consider people eating over making it into a club scene. The Music is different they have inside and outside seating ordering to go always takes over an hour but when you go sit there and be prepared to spend hours of your time.
