Toppings for the tacos also came with plenty of shredded cheese, salsa etc. When I ordered I was asked if I wanted soft or hard tacos and I responded soft. The order came with both! This was our first try at Amboy. We showed up before 3pm which is the lunch special. When we entered the only tables available were by a strobing broken light in a very darkened room and every table in an entirely empty nicely lit room with windows. In order to be seated in the room without the strobing horror movie broken light piercing through the darkness we had to wait until 3:10pm. At that point the waiter pretended to not know what the lunch specials were. Even though I asked about them twice and then described the special. We also ordered 3 different tacos and 2 sides for two people (we are used to smaller portion lunch special so the waiter didn't explain the difference) and the food took a very long while and it all came at the same time (?!) just before 4pm. An hour after we walked in. Normally when 2 people order samplers like this they bring whatever is ready out first, so hungry people have something to eat. I guess that is the slow time the entire staff takes a break (I understand the break but the whole staff at once?) so that's why the wait for the table and all the food. The staff was otherwise accommodating and friendly. Even the waiter who pretended he didn't know what a lunch special was. He claimed that restaurant didn't have one. I did ask for our waiter again to show him the lunch specials, which I finally found on the back of the to go menu which I happened to pick up on the way in. The menu he gave us was the dinner menu so the lunch specials were not on it. In the end it was too much food (you get 3 tacos instead of 2 per order & prices were very high) had we known the difference in amount of food we'd have ordered differently. So even though it was very obvious we were looking for our waiter and the entire staff was just chillin in our room, someone else came over (he avoided it). He was charming enough but explained it was now ten minutes too late for the lunch special which the other waiter pretended did not exist at this location, and then answered questions about how much more food it would be. About 45 minutes later five waiters made a huge flourish and served all the food. It was again charming and I was very happy bc I wanted to give my mom a relaxing fun day out and break from caring for my father father but a little weird that it went from no attention to so much attention (they knew how expensive the check was going to be) with two of the waiters making a flourish out of bringing over another small table to place all the the food upon (again being reminded we are in the wrong room I guess) which I easily could have moved with my foot The food itself was delicious. They accommodated an allergy for the table which I very much appreciated. It's the reason I used all the locations they always accommodate this. I ordered 2 dishes that used to be fairly authentic and they've been updated in a good way. I read those reviews and I would still recommend the short rib and the patron. Excellent. I'd prefer the short rib on a plain tortilla rather than coated with a Doritos like coating which I wasn't used to growing up with my family. But it was very tasty. My favorite by far is the zucchini taco and I do recommend it. I do look at food before I eat it and even took food home. It tasted fresh. The Guac was a little different than the other locations and there was a lot less of it but it also was very tasty. At the end my mom wanted to treat. It was a special day, and so we just wanted a nice copacetic time. So while she paid I cooled the car as we were now late to get back to my dad who is recuperating. When we were driving home we totaled up the meal in our heads and the bill was in fact too much, even without the lunch special prices. So I came to Yelp and sure enough there were other reviews about the faulty computer. I'm afraid to say I believe this happened to us. So be sure to check your checks. What a shame. The food was so good I was going to leave a 5 star review until the incident with the check. Wow. That's...I don't even know what to say about that. It was the Feast of the Assumption so to do that on such a religious occasion is a wild thing to do. I will pray for this location. I have to say this was the most bizarre experience I've ever had at a Sofia's, and I'm sad to write a review about the wait ambiance and check. In future I'd definitely recommend going back but keep the menu at the table and definitely compare prices to the check. And make sure if you're not seated by 3pm to point out you came in for the lunch special. He and I had the mojitos - blueberry for him and strawberry for me. I gravitate towards strawberry anything but I must admit, his blueberry mojito was so good, I ordered 2 more of those! Two of our boys ordered the blueberry lemonade and they tasted pretty great too. We also asked for a round of waters for everyone and the house tri-color tortilla chips and salsa were enough to hold the kids off until the food came. For our family, we got the crab empanadas to share and got the kids' entrees ordered right away: carne asada tacos and chicken fingers + fries for our youngest 3 to share. My oldest got the beef tacos, hubby got the steak burrito and I got the carne asada off the Platos Fuertes selection. I was surprised at how much crab meat was in our empanadas - decent sized and lumps of meat. My steak was well seasoned, tasted great and cooked to medium, just as I ordered. Hubby is a stickler when it comes to food and pleasantly enjoyed his meal. First off service was good. We were a table of 4 women and ordered a pitcher of White Sangria . We were not able to get 4 full glasses as the pitcher was more than 3/4 full of ice. He writes a report to the owner after closing. What good is a manager if they can't make the customer happy. So my advice is to ask for ice on the side or glasses filled with ice instead. What a fun place with delicious food! I can't wait to return and then in May come back for my birthday!! Such a fun atmosphere and a great way to spend the early part of New Year's Eve!!! The music was so lively. The staff were so attentive to our needs, constantly checking in. Franco was our server and he was terrific! Been going for years and today 5/31/25 the chicken Fajitas had mold on it ! When I called and told them what happened they put me on hold and never answered. So messed up. I ordered $80 worth of food and my family wouldn't eat any of the food after. Pescado Yucatán - fish fresh, juicy and fluffy, grilled to perfection! Rice was also great with nice cilantro note. And chipotle-corn salsa nicely complimented both. Overall- delicious! Steak Fajita - well made. My son liked it. Steak Burrito - my son said it was a good one, but unremarkable - 4 out of 5. Drinks: Mexican Mule - ok, but was way too sweet for my palate. Strawberry-mint margarita - great. We had a few of them. Raspberry-mango margarita - good, but strawberry was better. Desserts: Cookie butter tres leches - very good. Mexican chocolate mousse cake - definitely pass on this one. I didn't find any mousse there. Would rather try strawberry-Nutella empanadas. Keep in mind the restaurant has a huge selection of hot sauces, some if not most of which they make in house. For some reason they don't advertise them but the list is available online and you may ask for them. I tried three sauces and they were very tasty, being a great addition to the main course. The bartenders are so friendly .However the manager on duty on Fridays would always complain about standing by the bar and wasn't the nicest person. Best Mexican food I had on Staten Island. The chicken burritos and chimichangas were so full of flavor in every bite. I was a little worried since I saw some prior Yelp photos with very little chicken in the burrito, but ours seemed to be loaded to the brim with great tasting blackened chicken (emphasis on the blackened, because because most Mexican restaurants in the northeast have notoriously flavorless chicken). The staff was really nice as well, accommodating a substitution of black beans in the burrito on a busy Friday night. As for the chimichanga, I'm used to them being much smaller and crispier, but this was an awesome improvement on the classic dish, with the tasty cheese fondue. It's very mild, for those who can't handle spicy, but they were happy to bring a few additional hot sauces to the table to bring that heat back in the mix.
