Both the food and service were absolutely incredible. Their sweet tea, flour and corn tortillas were all homemade, and their enchiladas and carne guisada were miles above that of any Jalisco or Acapulco restaurant! Not to mention their salsa provided for the tortilla chips also tasted like it was made right in mom's kitchen. Their restaurant is kind of tucked away but, that allows for a nice, comfortable atmosphere during the dining experience. I had been wanting to come to La Iguana for years, but for some reason just started to. It's a bit out of the way for me, but when I'm in Portland, it is now my go-to place for an excellent taqueria Mexican brunch! Their food is really good, and service is near exceptional, in my opinion. One of the things I really like is how easy they make it to order off the breakfast menu à la carte. If you go that route, the food is actually super cheap! Another thing I really like is the atmosphere. The best way I could pit it is "funky cool Tex-Mex" - it's a bit much, but I like it! They also have an awesome spacious outdoor patio area, which is something I wish other taquerias in the area had more of. I plan to continue frequenting this place in the near-future! read more

That is a big error to start with. Never serve any "plate for two" what has an uneven number of ANYTHING!! But to pile insult on injury, when I asked if I could get more tortillas I was told they were 20 cents each!!!! Tortillas in a Mexican restaurant are like bread in a Steak restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious and they get it out quick. The service is also really quick too, but the employees are fast and sometimes make mistakes. For example, they didn't ask my dad if he wanted more coffee and just filled it up for him. It ruined the taste of the coffee for him. On the positive side the ambiance of the restaurant is just oozing with Mexican culture. The decor and environment is just as nice as the food. We had a 7 adults and 5 children. They brought out the food as it was cooked. Most of us were finished before our last guest even got his meal. We had to ask for it twice. Seriously we were all ready to leave when he finally got his order. We seen other guest come and go on the patio while we were waiting for all of our food. Forget getting refills on tea. She said she would just bring out a pitcher but she just refilled 2 and left with the pitcher The waitress was very nice and just overwhelmed. I actually told her take a breath honey it will be ok. My beef enchiladas were horrible. Tasted like Hornell chili in a tortilla. My daughter had to tell the staff her cheese was molded and they needed to throw the cheese out. Told her they were separate tickets. The staff could not figure out to ring it up in 3 different orders so they had to put it all on one ticket. The manager left while we were still eating. She should have stay and helped the young employees. The nicest thing I can say is our waitress was very nice and apologized. Not her fault the food was not good and came out in shifts. I have always liked this restaurant., the atmosphere is very nice and the food is decent and the service has been very good to me and my family. I usually have enchiladas but this trip tried a special that came with one beef fajita taco and a chalupa with rice and beans. I found the beef fajita prepared very well with excellent taste and hot. The tortilla tasted fresh made and the lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, etc was fresh as well. The chalupa was also on a fresh tostada with fresh tasty toppings. Do NOT waste your money. Very slow service, incorrect order, taco salad was not good, fajitas and rice were not good, we asked for two separate tickets and everything was on one, terrible michelada, and we were charged 18% gratuity which was definitely NOT deserved. We got to the cashier and told him what happened and he went and spoke to our waitress. We had to tell him how to separate the ticket and that we did not want to leave an 18% gratuity because our experience certainly did not warrant it! He said it was their policy to charge that amount of gratuity for our party of 6. We told him we didn't agree and explained why and he said he was just a cashier. So we asked for the manager and he said he was the manager and there was nothing he could do. I said so now you're the manager when just a second ago you were just a cashier and there's nothing you can do? I told him it's no wonder their rating was a 2.7 and we will NEVER go back there again. We have driven from Rockport to eat here several times. When we drive over here we are not in a hurry so we don't mind if it takes a while to get our food. Our waiter was just the right amount of attentive and keep our salsa bowl full! He even brought me my own bowl of salsa! I have added pictures of what we ordered. There are 3 of us eating today. I ordered the 3 chalupas with beef fajitas. Sissy ordered #26 and my cousin ordered the 3 Mexican tacos. WE LOVED IT! All three of us ate to the point of saciation. Good lord this place was awful. I've lived in Portland for about 10 years so I know this place well enough. And I know this restaurant well enough too. I've been here 10+ times. Is it my choice to come here? No. It's my families on Sunday's after church. The first reason I don't like this place is because of it's hygiene. I clearly recall sitting next to a wall eating a stuffed avocado. My dad told me not to look at the wall to my right. Naturally, I looked and I saw 3 baby roaches crawling around. I dropped my food and just wanted to leave. The floors are nasty and my plate still had previous food residue. This happens multiple times too. Second reason is because of the food. I can't say that I'd rather eat my foot than the food, but I'd rather eat my foot instead of the food. It's not bad, it's just bland. I've worse Mexican food before. Thankfully, we haven't come here in a while. I think my family stopped liking it too due to the reasons I spoke of above. read more

La Iguana is the #1 reason I go to Portland. They have the best Mexican food in the area, and that's including Corpus. I've tried almost everything in the menu: all the appetizers, enchiladas, tortas, chalupas, quesadillas, tacos, shrimp salad, fajitas all the way to my ultimate favorite, the Molcajete. Oh, and don't let me forget about the breakfast. This place has the BEST BREAKFAST! The huevos rancheros are my all time favorite, but I can never say no to their breakfast tacos. I'm drooling just thinking about it. I can never have enough! Their lemonade is delicious and their bar drinks are everything you need on a hot day in Texas. I love this place!!! read more

Best sit-down Mexican food in the area. I know that's hyperbolic in an area with a taqueria on every corner. But, seriously, this is the most consistently-good mexican food in the Corpus area. In general, it's the standard Corpus-area, northern Mexico, Jalisco-style fare. Their beans and rice are awesome. I favor the pastor plate---#17 if you're ordering take-out. Green enchiladas are great---ask for extra cheese. My husband always gets the crispy tacos, which are awesome; homemade shells, well-seasoned meat and loads of cheese and veggies. Tortillas are on the thick side, both flour and corn (I prefer their corn). They have also recently added a bar, which is more than welcome in Portland where drinks-with-dinner is a recent development. And they have an outside patio that's nice and that we'll try out when it ceases to be 101 degrees outside. read more

This place deserves the business - Yelp's address is wrong. If heading South on 181, Exit 2986 access road to Moore ave (left at light) - Corner of Houston and 5th Food was really good. Atmosphere was great. Staff very friendly. The only thing stopping this from 5 is that we weren't wild about their salsa and chips and the location is a bit tricky to find. Refried beans, borracho beans, tortillas, enchiladas, etc - all great. Can't wait to try more of their food. We'll be stopping here again. read more

Desperate for Mexican food and La Iguana was all I could find via Yelp. It's a little off the beaten path in a residental area. The food was pretty good, but than I expected. The taco was better than average, having a decent crunch to it. Enchilada was about average. Bean and Cheese Nachos were pretty good. Pretty good refried beans which I normally don't care for. Rice as above average. Salsa was different, a hybrid between salsa and pico de gallo, but awesome. Staff was very friendly. The only let down was the chips. Yes, I ate the whole basket because I was pretty hungry and the salsa was awesome. But good chips aren't holding this place down a full star, perhaps 1/3 of a star. We decided to go eat based on their reviews on google map. First impressions very nice but the problem came when paying for our meal. The owner/manager will make you pay for their mistake when ordering your plates. The order was simple. Barbacoa with eggs. We told the waitress that the eggs on both meals be cooked medium. When we got our food we noticed no eggs. When the waitress came back she TOLD us I made a mistake. My buddy said I'll just eat this and I told the waitress I wanted the eggs. The waitress comes back with two eggs. Food was definitely good no problem. When we got our bill we were charged $1.50 more for each plate. I question the bill and they said we didn't charge you for the eggs. I was completely baffled and was told that we were given a larger portion which was for lunch but I told the manager/owner we weren't told that we would have to pay your lunch when it was their mistake. The manager/owner even got other customers involved in the conversation but then they told him that normally since it was there mistake and they didn't tell us we would have to pay a lunch price that they should take the lost. Well, I finally got tired of talking to the wall and paid for the bill and they wanted to give me double receipts to show me the difference. Just beware if it's wrong send it back because if you think your helping your not...I kind of think they would have taken the plate back half portioned the barbacoa put it on a different plate and made it a breakfast item. This place continues to go down hill weekly, the wait staff has really gotten to be lazy , with exception of some of the original waitresses. From messed up orders to completely forgetting to bring items out. Maybe I'm wrong butt appetizers usually come before the meal !! When your waiter walks by three times and never looks your way or stops to see if you need something it tends to piss you off. Cell phones need to be put away an more attention to the customers. Tips are earned not a given, I tend to over tip when my glass stays full and my needs are taken care of, I know you live off tips and I appreciate your job, the owners need to watch their staff and cut loose of the dead weight, I've been eating out of this very building since it started out as the Pitt BBQ and changed names throughout the years , Portland eateries come and go , get back to quality service or Hit the road . read more
