This new location has only been open for less than two weeks. I was very impressed by the illuminated drive through. They had visuals and menus scrolling! We ordered chicken enchiladas, and they were really good. I didn't like the rice as much. The chicken fajitas were BOMb! They have us a lot. The drive through window was big and open. You can see in. Went to eat dinner on a Sunday around 6pm. The restaurant was not crowded (maybe 6 tables mostly 2 tops). Greeter almost sat me at a dirty table. There was only one waiter in the restaurant that I saw. After a wait of about 7 minutes the waiter came and took my order. I ordered the chili rellenos. I never received chips and salsa...maybe you have to ask for these now??? My food came in a reasonable amount of time, and looked disgusting!! It looked like someone's left overs. There was a small piece of a poblano and then nothing else but cheese. I couldn't find any sauce if there was any. And no batter on the poblano. I tasted so bland. My party of 8 had a great dinner here while visiting Corpus Christi. We went on a week night and it was really quiet, we did have to wait about 10-15 minutes to be seated as we were told they were extremely short staffed. We honestly would have not even noticed the staffing issue as we had an amazing server who was extremely attentive the whole night. Sure our food took a tad longer to come out, but everyone's meals were delicious. Not one of us left disappointed. The adults all had margaritas which were perfectly made. I got the stuffed avocado again which was delicious as usual. I loved my beef fajita taco on the side, with perfectly seasoned and tender meat. I honestly was too full to even try my tortilla soup and rice so I can't comment on those. La playa is one of my favorite spots when in town and I would definitely return next time I'm in town. read more

Pro: The food was "okay" Con: The service was horrible our waiter was working but going back and having dinner with his two female friends. They took up to 45 min to bring out an appetizer and one beer. We asked for the manager and our server said "I don't know where he is to be honest." They gave us some dirty plates. Over charged us on our ticket. We got to la playa at 6:20PM and it is now 8:40PM. We spent most of our time waiting for meals, and drinks. Horrible! Horrible! I suggest a different place. read more

I go back and forth on this place . The current situation with not enough working personnel who unfortunately are subsidized has hit them hard. Our waitress was very nice and pleasant but she was running around like a chicken with her head cut off. This is the managements fault along with the subsidization by the government that I mentioned previously. Our food was pretty good . l ordered the Fish San Lucas , it was fairly good . The fish was kind of lost in the sauce , which was all over the place! Next time, I'll ask for sauce on the side. Beans and rice were good . The green salsa was excellent. My wife had the cheese enchiladas and she thought they were good. The flour Tortillas were somewhat stiff and not very pliable. Overall it's fairly good, not outstanding. We have been there many times over because it's close. There is one thing that I should point out that is troubling . The restaurant interior is starting to look run down. Tables are unclean looking , ac vents are caked with dust, fans that are up have dust and grim on them , the doors are filthy looking , should just replace them . I know it means money but they just have to get new dining room things. One of their biggest problems is flies and fruit flies. A fruit fly landed in my wife's tea. And you always have to contend with, say, least one fly it seems. We have stayed away because of the last thing and after this visit we will probably stay away unless we know that they have addressed the cleanliness issues. read more

Margaritas were good. Food wasn't amazing but it was good enough. The service however was AWFUL! When we arrived we were only a party of 5 (one of which was a baby not getting anything) and only 4 other tables in the entire restaurant were occupied (3 or which were already well into their meals). It took about 15 minutes to get water and tea. When the rest of our party arrived (5 additional guests) they were sitting at the table for about 15 minutes before the waiter even came over (at the time we were his only table). 2 other tables came in and had already received their food before he even took our order. We would see him just standing around and chatting with other employees while we were trying to just get his attention. Maybe he put little effort in because he knew due to restaurant policy he would have a guaranteed hefty tip, still not an excuse for terrible service. read more

Okay food, okay environment. coming from Houston, TX lately I've had my share of good Mexican restaurants. This place is always packed, and it was great service except the food for me was lacking of flavor. It was all just mediocre food for me. The margarita was pure sweet and sour and had no tequila flavor and came in a plastic glass, it was top shelf as well. As many places there are in Corpus Christi I have yet to find a truely authentic tasting of Mexican food. Houston just blew me out of the water in this area. Would go back as my family loves this place, or the La Playa chain of restaurants. read more

I have been to La Playa twice, but I have only tried one entree because I don't need to go further. Their beef fajitas are as good as any I have had anywhere. I see people complaining about the prices but the tacos al carbon plate is a good value. $9.99 for two beef fajita tacos, rice, beans, and an individual sized queso. Hard to beat that anywhere that the beef fajitas actually taste good. Their rice & beans are slightly better than average, but not the best I have had. The queso is good, with a strong cheese flavor. I enjoyed the chips & green salsa particularly. I have had no complaints about the service. The restaurant is attractive and clean. read more

There was nothing about this visit that I didn't absolutely love. I noticed the decor was a bit dim and "no-frills" during our brief wait to be seated, but I came to realize this was just an indication that they put forth that extra energy into the food instead. After poking around the menu, I decided on the Stuffed Avocado that my friend heartily recommended to me, and a frosty Topo Chico mineral water. The plate came out in good time, HOT and fresh, with two sides of tortilla soup and a lone beef fajita (more on this later). The tortilla soup was sumptuous and loaded with tender mushrooms, onions, and tortilla chips that were still ever so crisp to the bite. The beef fajita was among the best I've ever eaten in my entire life, tender and bursting with flavor (I suspect a rather fantastic marinade method). The avocado was everything that an avocado could hope to be, but compounded by the effect of being slathered in melty cheese, and stuffed with tender chicken (next time, will order beef in the avocado considering how amazing the fajitas were). I strongly suspect a wise and loving abuela overseeing the kitchen staff, everything tasted 100% home-made. read more

La Playa is one of my favorite restaurants in Corpus Christi. I should be fair and let you all know that I have actually only ever eaten one dish here, because I can't imagine NOT having it when I am in town. Vegetarian Tortilla Soup. DIVINE. Even states in the menu that it's made with a vegetarian broth. Most restaurants in Texas are not too friendly to veggie folks - but La Playa gets it! Chicken = not vegetarian. Fish = not vegetarian. Soup made only with veggies, spices, tortilla strips and cheese = vegetarian. The cheese is added at the end, so this soup could even be made vegan. If you are of the carnivorous variety, they will add chicken to the soup if you prefer. The atmosphere is bright and open, with both booths and lots of big tables available, as well as a bar. I would imagine this place gets kind of packed on weekend nights. They play wonderful contemporary Spanish-language music throughout. Service is good here too. My teammates, client and I arrived ten minutes before they officially opened yesterday, and they staff were happy to let us in and serve us even though they were still getting ready for the day. I make it a point to visit La Playa whenever I'm in town! read more

It was just me who thought they were beyond spicy, my bf ordered them too and could barely eat them, now he's got the worst stomach ache. Holy crap on Christmas. This is probably and randomly the best Mexican food I've had since forever. I eat Mexican food all the time at home in Dallas, but the flavors can't compare. The server then brought only my tea and took the order. The rest of the drinks came out, except for my husband's beer. The food arrived and he still had not gotten his beer. Ridiculous!! The food had no flavor, was cold, and the tortillas were raw. Our sever never checked on us once. She didn't write the order down, so 2 of our plates were wrong. Pretty good service. The servers even have a fancy all black attire. Their bar looks cool, though I haven't tried orderin' drinks from there. Hands down worst Mexican restaurant I've tried in town. Service was terrible, we had to ask other servers to help us several times since our waitress was too distracted to give us any refills, to go plates, etc. Keep in mind the capacity was less than half full and we still couldn't get any service. The food matched the service, I honestly don't know how this place is rated above 2 stars. The beef was a mushy, over seasoned excuse of meat. The queso looked like rubbery plastic by the time it was served. The only reason I give this place 2 stars is because the sweet tea and the seafood platter were okay. Everything else is below mediocre and they had the audacity to add their own tip to our 4 person bill. Ridiculous. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND COOK AT HOME. read more
