If you are looking for a cheap place to eat and drink, this is your place. Although do not be surprised if you find a gnat in your drink or a hair in your cheese dip. I purchased a shot for my brother's birthday and noticed a gnat in it. Asked for another one and she poured another only for it to have more gnats in it. She lifted the bottle and the whole bottle was filled with them. read more

The food here was what I'd expect from a Mexican restaurant. It doesn't stand out but definitely is a staple in this area for as long as I can remember. The service is slower than the average Mexican place, and it's probably due to the fact that it's crazy busy all the time. Come on a Monday, Tuesday, etc, and they're typically swamped during dinner. Good food, proportions and atmosphere. This is second time and always find a reason to come back.

We ordered the Guacamole Mexicano. Either they gave us Guacamole Dip and charged us more for the Mexicano version, or they don't know what Guacamole Mexicano is. That would be horrible for a Mexican restaurant. My entree had to be thrown away. I ordered the Burrito Grande because I wanted the sides- especially the refried beans. I asked to substitute the side of rice with beans. (What can I say, I like them). Instead of using a container with separated spaces for sides, this food was all thrown into one container. That wouldn't have been a problem if the beans had any consistency. They were as thin as water. I only wish I had a picture to substantiate my description. Not only could I have used a straw for them, they were cold. The burrito was saturated and soggy from sitting in this soupy bean and burrito red sauce. read more

For some reason they cover burritos in red sauce and don't state that it is covered on the menu or in person. The chalupa isn't a chalupa It's a tortilla or something covered in beans and tomatoes and not even folded. When I called them back they told me it's not their fault so they can't do anything about it. Never go there. read more

The food was authentic and one of the best we have had in the area. We were seated on the patio and waited on promptly. Because we had a party of 8, two waiters assisted us. We were surprised by the large serving sizes and the margaritas were delicious. We have camped in the area for nearly 14 years and never ventured to this restaurant. We will be returning!!! Awesome food at a great price! A new favorite! This place has quickly become my favorite Mexican joint, hands down. The first time we tried to go was on Cinco de Mayo, and even with extra tents up, folks were parking blocks away. So... Fun place for that holiday, but we went elsewhere. Returning a few weeks later, it was obvious why this place is so popular. It's a typical, family owned restaurant, with the usual decorations and music. The place was fairly crowded, always a sign. They were quick with the drink orders and to deliver the customary salsa and chips. Warm, homemade chips are awesome. Everything was delicious and authentic. The portions were huge, and the prices were more than fair. Even cheap. Chimichangas were a little skimpy, but every thing else came in outrageously large proportions. One of my family's favorite dishes are chili rellenos- poblanos stuffed with cheese and deep fried.... We found a new favorite here... Basically the same but filled with a mix of cheese and mashed potatoes. Amazing, and takes up a giant Fiesta ware plate for like 4 bucks. We all took home leftovers, and were amazed by the bill. Even with a few Margaritas, it was less than many Diner ish places like Kings or Perkins. read more

My husband and I were stationed in New Mexico and Arizona while in the military. We know authentic Mexican food and La Isla offers the best around. We currently live 60 miles from there but we make the extra effort for a trip to this wonderful establishment. Great personal service. Request the spicy green salsa if you like it spicy. What passes for Mexican food in Hermitage is disgusting to me. It was all wrong... all their lunch specials are ground beef based. Yuk. I asked for carne asada for an up charge which was fine. The entire meal was doused in a tomato sauce. If i had added a little sugar and italian spices it would have been spaghetti sauce. When the ships and salsa were brought out, the salsa was again all tomatoes. I asked for a spicier salsa but they never brought it. The carne asada was way over cooked and really tough. The prices were really low so I guess at least they didn't take very much money. I would rather spend a little more and have better quality food but in Hermitage, there are not very many options!! read more

So good! You can smell the food in the parking lot so you know it's gonna be good. The chips were hot and fresh and the salsa was amazing. The carnitas was so moist and flavorful. The beans and rice were super good too! Huge portions. We will be coming back so don't change a thing! read more

I learned a few things today. I thought I knew all of the ways a diner can have bad service. I'm now enlightened. First, the good - the food was good. Moving on: My partner and I stopped in at 5 pm on a Friday. The restaurant was about half full. We spied an open booth by the window, and stood by it so the staff would clean it. A staff member came up to the booth to have a look, then went to another booth (with no one at it) and cleaned that one. We stood for ~10 minutes until someone came to clean it. Our waiter immediately took our drink order, brought the drinks, then did not return for nearly 20 minutes to take our food order. My fajita came first, but without tortillas or a plate. My partner's enchilada, and my tortillas came ~10 minutes later. By that time the rice & beans were cold, and the fajita was just warm. Still no plate. When the waiter came back to check on us, he said he forgot the plate. WE requested water, but he only brought water - for my partner! Good grief - ! read more

I've got to admit, I didn't expect Mexican food to be great in a place like this - rural Western Pennsylvania. Fortunately I was wrong - the food here was impressively good. The first key was that when I walked in the door I knew I was in for an authentic Mexican meal as the workers were Mexican and would converse with each other in Spanish. Might sound dumb, but it's always a good sign. The food I've had here has all been great. The La Isla Especial - a fajita dish with beef, chicken, chorizo, and shrimp is one not to miss. The tamales are wonderful and you should not miss the a-la-carte Beef grilled tacos. They're made in the same style as the carne asada tacos you can find at all the incredible small tacquerias that line the West Coast. I'll keep going back to La Isla as long as working in the area. read more

A favorite spot for locals of all ages, La Isla is a comfortable environment with exceptional food. My favorites include the quesadilla rellena with chicken; a great dinner for less than $6. The chimichangas are wonderful, and definitely large enough to take home. The gaucamole is worth a trip itself. The staff of La Isla are genuinely friendly and always willing to get your order perfect. Don't worry about making special requests; they handle them with a smile. And did I mention the free WiFi? Yelp lists La Isla as not having take out, but they do. The entire menu is available, including the free chips and salsa. At night, La Isla boasts an impressive nightlife frequented by local bands. It leans toward a younger crowd, and the outdoor patio turns into a dance floor after 10pm. Definitely a great (and affordable) stop when you're visiting "the valley", as we say here. La Isla is ok - just ok. The service is sloooow. The food is average. The chicken (used in fajitas, tacos, burritos, etc) is rather bland. On the plus side, there are many flavors of margaritas and the salsa (served with chips) has a nice smokey and spicy kick to it. Since options are limited in this area, this place is worth a try. read more

Had dinner there last night. Sat outside since it was a nice day and I was stuck indoors all day. Service wasn't too bad. Portions were good. Apps were pretty big. However, I really didn't get any flavor for the place. People were nice but maybe I was just overtired or something. I'd probably give them another chance when in area again. read more

This family-run restaurant serves made-to-order authentic Mexican food, some of the best I have ever had--and a great value, too! The service is not the same as your typical casual dining spot; food comes out of the kitchen as it is prepared. But it is fresh, made with quality ingredients, seasoned perfectly, just exceptional. La Isla features a fun atmosphere, good food, and good prices. What is most impressive about La Isla is how well the feeling of Mexico is conveyed by the restaurant. The outdoor seating area is extremely impressive. The restaurant was cleaner than most, but still has it's flaws, like uncomfortable benches. In spite of this, atmosphere is still La Isla's best asset. You do tend to forget that you're in western Pennsylvania, if just for a short time. The food quality is great. The menu is expansive and it's impossible to pick anything bad. The dishes La Isla serves, in my experience, have had more zesty flavor than most Mexican Restaurants, which that's a unique touch that will bring me back. Price is good, too, though comparable restaurants seem to be priced better. There are daily specials on alcohol, which is also nice, because the alcohol is priced well to begin with. La Isla does everything great, but few attributes excel. I'm a Mexican food enthusiast, and La Isla offers an unbeatable atmosphere which occasionally features live bands. This is a nice touch with the great food which, like the atmosphere, tastes a little bit different than what I've come to expect from Mexican restaurants. read more

Against my better judgment I decided to give this place a try, big mistake. I got the impression that the server didn't want to seat me at a booth being that I was dining alone. After placing my order I never saw my server again being that someone else brought it to the table, the food wasn't very hot, the steak in my burrito was tough, in short this was just a bad experience. Saw my server one last time after asking someone else to track him down for the bill. How people in Hermitage continue to pack the parking lot here is beyond me. Apparently they have no clue of good Mexican food or maybe they too will learn to avoid this place as well after visiting. La Isla has the most authentic Mexican food in the area. Most of the other places share the same menu that I would say is more Tex-Mex than Mexican. Having lived in Mexico, and marrying into a Mexican family I know authentic Mexican food, and La Isla is the only place in the Mahoning/Shanango Valley to get it. I ordered the carnitas, and they were as good as any I tried in Mexico. The rice, beans and salsa are all top rate as well. My wife had the enchiladas supremas and she said they were as good as any back home. The portions are extremely generous, even the kids portions are enough for an adult! The prices are reasonable and there is a good selection of beverages.The staff was friendly and efficient without being overbearing. I would highly recommend this place if you want to try authentic Mexican food without leaving the area. read more

The mexican food at La Isla is pretty decent, considering where in the US it is. Coming from the Bay Area of California, it's hard to compare but I was excited to find this place on Yelp. Be warned- the house margaritas are terrible! It tasted like they use Gatorade for their sour mix. More importantly they used a well tequila called Montezuma, which is almost undrinkable. There are so many good-tasting, cheap tequilas on the market including El Jimador, El Cabrito, Milagro, Sauza, I'm at loss why anyone would use Montezuma as their well. Lesson learned- always inquire what tequila they use in your margarita- it can be a deal breaker! The service was good, chips and salsa were great. read more

Best Mexican food in town. Cheap prices on drinks and food, plus amazing lunch and happy hour specials. Always snag a beer and a snack here on the weekend. Go once, try something, then go again even if you didn't like your food the first time. The menu is so diverse you could definitely have something you don't like then come back and have the best food you've had in years. Staff is super nice, and treats everyone like regulars but once you get to know them they only get nicer. Only complaint is the seating sucks on weekends or when there are large groups. Wish they're were more dividers or that 20+ groups just wouldn't come here. Try the summer, when the patio is open and the seating is less cramped. Live music isn't great either, but they keep changing bands so maybe that'll get better too. read more
