I thought I would stop in for some mid-day coffee and a muffin. I thought the place would be something like a Starbucks or something like that. In actuality it is like a French bakery and cafe. I love it. I walked in to see these delicious little cakes and pastries reminicent of Babettes in Long Beach...you know, without the crack head gauntlet. I thought I'd never find a replacement for Babettes, but after a week and a half here in the ATL....I've found it, only better. I quickly spoted the muffins, salads, soups and such. I ordered the salad sampler and my choices were the spinach salad, the pasta salad and the fruit salad. The pasta was pretty good, but the spinach salad was off the chain! I poued some of my mango ginger vinaigrette over it when I got back to my spot and mmm mmm mmm...it was so delish. I read the other reviews regarding the soup and and other foods and will most definately come back here when I need to make another Staples run. Definitely a huge fan of this place. I love their tomato basil and cream of mushroom soups! They have a great outdoor patio that we took advantage of during our last visit and the restaurant itself is always clean and well maintained. If you've never been to a La Madeleine location, it's set up "cafeteria style" where you add food items to your tray and check out at the end of the line. They have fountain drinks and teas available as well. Love their raspberry jelly and complimentary slices of wheat bread by the fountain drinks. They are perfect for dipping into my favorite soups from here. Everyone that works there are super friendly and courteous. This is a good place for lunch that I use to visit all of the time but all of a sudden stopped. I remember now, I stopped working in that area for some time. There are not many french bakery cafes that I know of in Atlanta. Having something different is good, especially when it is good! Starting with their "world famous" tomato bisque soup, adding chips or a salad and a half or whole sandwich all comes together for a pretty fulfilling lunch. This place actually opens at 6/6:30am for breakfast. That is still on my list to try. The soup is damn good and very fattening being loaded with calories. Maybe its not so bad as a meal by itself but with a sandwich, geez la weez! I had a recent experience where I ordered to go and quickly picked up without double checking my meal. I ordered the turkey sandwich with bacon and received a tuna sandwich with crumbled bacon on the side in a baggy. What the.... I ate it, then called to inform them of the mishap. I was placed on hold indefinitely. I tried again the next day and reached a manager within a matter of minutes. He asked for my receipt/ticket number which I still had and I informed him of the situation (not in that order). He told me to swing by. I did and he took care of me, giving me my original order free of charge. He even hustled to get it done. I really appreciated that as I was short on time. I am rating this place solely on their desserts - and really this place should add patisserie to their name to garner greater interest from all of the sweet tooths out there. So, there are really two sides to La Madeleine, the sweet and the savory. Obviously I prefer the sweet and it is the first thing you will be greeted with upon entering this little eatery. They offer fresh baked treats daily, though they bake the same things each day (no specials) they do run out so you may notice different offering each time you go. I have tried almost every dessert and they are all amazing. The best are: Chocolat Tart Lemon Tart Creme Brulee Fresh Fruit Tart Tiramisu Strawberry Napoleon These aren't dainty little treats either, each one is enough to share and are priced quite reasonably. La Madeleine has a cute and cozy french deli/cafe feel with its brick columns, wooden tables and seating as its interior. It is located on Pleasant hill next to the Rooms To Go with ample parking. It has been soooo long since I've been here. I've only had their cheesecake in the past so I was excited to try some of their other items today. I ordered a whole Chicken Salad Croissant ($7.49) which comes with a choice of one side (Caesar Salad, Tomato Basil Pesto Pasta Salad, or Salt & Pepper Chips). You can also substitute a cup of soup or fruit salad for 99 cents. I wasn't looking at the menu when I ordered so I didn't know they charged extra for soup since the cashier simply asked me would you like soup, salad, or chips. I went with their tomato basil soup since I've been craving this for a while. The Chicken Salad Croissant was quite delicious and surprisingly packed with flavor. Their croissant is crispy on the outside but rather thin for a croissant. I usually like my croissants fluffy on the inside. Their croissant was also on the smaller side and I was a little concerned I would be left hungry; however, I had my two desserts that would most likely put me over the edge. I would definitely recommend this to those of you of haven't tried it. Their Tomato Basil Soup was also good aside from being a bit too tangy for my preference. It was borderline lip-puckering sour. Perhaps something more cheesy would have gone better with my soup than my chicken salad sandwich. For dessert, I ordered their Napoleon and Fruit Tart (~$5/each). Napoleon is a french pastry that has many layers of puff pastry with custard filling alternating between each layer. Napoleon is by far one of my favorite french pastries. I found their puff pastry layers a bit too thick and their custard filling to be rather too sweet. It is not the worst I've had but I will resort to ordering this at the Georgia French Bakery. Their Fruit Tart was satisfyingly delicious aside from a minor complaint of it being a tad bit too sweet. I didn't order their cheesecake this time, but I remember it being creamy, not overly sweet, and quite yummy. I ordered a Cafe Americano for my drink to give me an extra boost for the day. You can order it in two different sizes (Single, $2.09 or Double, $2.69). I originally ordered the single and it really looked too small. So I politely asked if I could upgrade it to the Double. We've been going here for years. I'll probably continue to go despite the removal of my favorite dish -- the cordon bleu sandwich -- from their menu. Lame. They've definitely made a few menu changes as of late, but it seems they've added on a few new savory dishes that look tasty. They still continue to serve their famous tomato basil soup and always have a few fresh quiches on the griddle. Though, I don't think i'll be trying their caesar salad again. Last time I had it, I couldn't get the taste of the dressing out of my mouth for the rest of the night and the lettuce was showing a few brown spots. A definite bright spot is the bus staff. La Madeleine has been one of my favorite places to eat for so long that it didn't even occur to me to review it! I've been eating here for over 8 years now, and it is consistently delicious and reasonably priced. La Mad is the place that turned me into a coffee drinker so many years ago, which is saying something. I love to come here with a book and curl up by the fire to read for a while - you get free coffee refills and complimentary bread and jam, so you can make an afternoon of it on a chilly day. I usually order from their pasta, salad, or hot bar (rather than waiting for a meal to be cooked), and some of my staples are the chicken friand, the quiche, tomato basil soup, Caesar salad, and pesto pasta (though the latest update to the recipe makes it a little greasier than I like). I always love this cafe, all locations! The food here is wonderful and has great flavors of France. The French coffee is worth the trip alone, but so is the tomato soup (and I usually do not care for tomato soup). My favorite is the pick three option and I get the spinach salad, tomato soup, and pasta salad. Some times I go crazy and get a crepe. I go here through the year to meet up with friends. We can stay as ling as we wish and pay up front so there is no confusion with the bill or adding friends who arrive later than others. My co-workers even have come here often for meetings after work for casual discussions. I do jot think they have wifi or office technology options, but it beats long meetings at work. I do not get why this place is so popular outside of maybe their desserts and salads. First off, the serving line-one lady was chewing on her finger and didn't wash after. The cooks, one cook picked up some food and ate it when he was preparing a dish. I don't think it was from that dish, but still. The finger chewer needed hot pad to move soup and asked one of the cooks for some, he threw them to her.... She didn't catch both if them, she simply picked it up off the floor and used them to haul her soup. The Servers- hands all over your plate and they just toss it in your general direction. Food- I had the French Dip sandwich and it was down right awful, glad I only got a half. I only ate two bites. The second bite was to confirm my first bite. No flavor and the "roast beef" tasted off. The pasta salad was dripping in oil. The French Onion soup was meh. Second time in about a year that I decided to give this place a try. I am SUPER happy to discover this little gem of a bakery tucked away in suburban Duluth and also located in the oddest of spots (it's neighbors are Rooms To Go and Toys R'Us!). Driving down Pleasant Hill, you would not expect to find this quaint space with the rows of car dealerships and gas stations that you pass. However, fortunately because the person I was meeting for lunch yesterday picked this venue, I discovered this little cafe which happens to be just a stone's throw from my apartment and minutes from my office! Can I do a happy dance?!!! So the set up is you walk in, grab a tray, and walk down the line where you start with your order and then get a wooden number sign to place on your table. Some things you can just get as you go, but for cold sandwiches and paninis, they will prepare and bring to you. They have a nice salad selection, soup, very appealing looking quiches, a nice espresso bar and even some desserts including a strawberry cheese parfait and a lemon tart! Great service too with a very friendly staff. The decor is charming and exudes warmth with dark wood paneling, hard wood floors, and cozy tables and chairs. The history is one that will make you smile too as you learn that La Madeleine is now one of 60 locations but started out when French Countryman Patrick Leon Esquerré came to America with little money in his pocket, broken English, and a dream. Fool me once! Last time we visited this location I had the Parisian eggs Benedict and the eggs were hard and the hollandaise tasteless. This time more of the same but the hollandaise had actually separated. They prepared a new item fairly quickly but everyone left feeling less than satisfied. Excuse me while I pretend to be classy. This is located so conveniently on pleasant hill with an abundance of parking. Plus plus! When you walk in, your confused. Been there, done that. I proceeded to get this half and half deal. The deal is is where you get half of a sandwich and two sides. I picked chicken salad sandwich, pasta and Cesar salad. Once you order and pay, you go and sit down at a table and the food will be brought to you. Bread is complimentary and you can find it at the station near the drink fountain. They also have pastries and latte's but I went mainly for food. As far as the chicken salad sandwich, I've had better. I would definitely go again.
