Quite a heavy start and I should not have ordered the risotto as my main. I only ate half. I had a glass of their house Bordeaux as well. This was my favorite place to eat during my trip to Nice. My friends and I were searching for a place to eat on a Monday night. It seems like almost every restaurant closes on Sunday and Monday. We found this place via yelp and decided to try it. It was one of the most heavenly meals I've had. We had a mussel dish, foie gras, and a vegetable dish to share for appetizers. All these dishes were awesome, especially the mussel dish. We ordered a second one for the table. I had the sole for an entree. The waiter cut the fish from the bone for me right at the table! The sole was simple but tasty, what I have come to expect from most French cuisine. All in all, a great place with tasty food and a great atmosphere. read more

My wife and I were in search of a delicious and romantic dinner while in Nice and Yelp led us to La Maison de Marie. Outstanding food and a romantic, quiet courtyard right in the heart of the city. Take the advice and look at a map before heading out. Then, once on Massena, look up for the red sign and head down the walkway into the courtyard. We were seated outside in the courtyard on a drizzling evening, managing to stay dry under the awning. Started with an amuse bouche from the chef - egg casserole with ham and cheese. Off to a good start. Decent wine selection as well - we picked a bordelaise that was slightly chilled and had a sweet, fruity finish. I started with the grilled peppers in olive oil with salad. The wife had the fish soup. She is a seafood connoisseur and swears this was the best fish soup she's had in France over the last 3 weeks of traveling. Complete with croutons and garlic aioli. Our main course we both had the gnocchi with Daube, a traditional regional beef stew. Mmmmmm. The beef was so tender it fell apart on the fork. The gnocchi like little sweet, potato pasta pillows. Unfortunately it is also frowned upon to lick the plate in France. Alas, the bread served as a wonderful vessel to enjoy the remaining sauce. For dessert I had fresh pineapple with a hint of mint. The wife had the lemon tart. Both were excellent finishes to the meal. Our server was attentive and did a solid job. Fair amount of folks had a reservation so if you have a large party or like to eat at a common time consider a reservation. Prices were fair for the amount of food. We found this restaurant on Yelp and had the concierge make a reservation for us on a Sunday evening in July. We intended to sit outside, but found the cigarette smoke to be unpleasant and were reseated at the window just inside. The surroundings were beautiful in a tree filled courtyard. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. We started with the melon/proscutto and heirloom tomato/burrata mozzarella salads. Both were outstanding and with large portions. My boyfriend had the duck breast with fingerling potatoes and I had Nicoise dumpling with beef regional specialty. Really delicious dishes. Our dessert was the ice cream balls covered in nuts. Wow! Typically when visiting a new city, I do not go to the same restaurant twice. However, after our delicious meal and cheerful service on our first night in Nice, we decided to return with business associates the next night. The food was outstanding both nights, the service was excellent the first night and satisfactory the second. This place is obviously very popular with locals and if you arrive after 8PM, a reservation is suggested. They open at 7PM and are really bustling in no time. The first night my colleague chose the prix fixe option (25€) which included a lamb terrine starter, stuffed rabbit entree and fresh pineapple for dessert. I had French fries as a starter (my first trip to France, so why not?) and my entree was La daube de Marie (beer stew) with Porcini mushrooms and ravioli niçois. Our server was very personable and attentive. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. We made reservations to return the next night with our colleages from Belfast. Everyone enjoyed their starters and entrees. I had the a crock of bubbly raclette, with some potatoes and thinly sliced ham. It was delicious. For my entree I chose the risotto with black truffles and fresh asparagus. It was perfect - creamy, garlicky risotto with delicous earthy truffles that coated the tongue with a heavenly aftertaste and topped with beautiful, fresh asparagus cooked al dente. Others selected the Salad Nicoise as a starter. The person who ordered the roast duck breast with pan-seared fois gras said he was "in heaven". Others had the fresh salmon and gnocchi and everyone was extremely pleased with their selections. Our server was less friendly than the previous night, but was efficient until after our entrees were served, then went missing. Someone else took our dessert/coffee orders and brought the bill. They have yummy desserts if you save room - I tried a couple small scoops of gelato/sorbet which were fantastic). I would certainly return here again and highly recommend to others. It's a bit difficult to find, tucked down a little alley, but if you map it on Google, you will find it easy enough. Bon appetit! read more

I think this is a fallback for the hotels, but a good one off the noisy Rue Massena down a little alley. My family tried a variety of things all of which were very good. Ask to sit in outside in the courtyard, weather permitting. read more

This restaurant is in a mainly tourist area. We picked it randomly based on being off the main walking area. It is in a very cute courtyard so there is some separation from the teeming hoards walking around at dinner time. We were seated quickly without a reservation, and overall had a great meal and very good food. The dishes we ordered seemed very authentic French for that region. We avoided the Prix Fixe, and just ordered some appetizers, and shared a main dish. Had the Sea Bream and we were kind of surprised, but it was the best fish we had the whole vacation. They even split it in half for us and de-boned. Our daughter's child burger was under cooked, so we sent it back and it came back just right. Our server was a little surly at first but warmed up to us, and we realized he was probably overworked and covering too large an area. So I could see that this place may not always be so perfect as it was for us. Having said that, we loved it: food style and taste, atmosphere and time to wait for our meals. The wine was good too, and for what we got the price seemed very reasonable. There are so many options when that part of NIce, so if you are near this one, I think its a good choice. read more

Really nice, even Romantic setting for a restaurant, especially since it is slightly off the main "rue" by way of a tunnel to the seating area. While the food was good, in my opinion in the middle for France, but my "problem" if you will, was that the staff is so overworked and overloaded, there was no time for niceties, none. No time for small talk or any talk or suggestions or anything. In hindsight, I would research further and definitely eat off the main "rues" where the lack of charm on the staff is probably a common problem. A dinner was a major mismatch between the expectations and the reality, so this is a "miss" review. A staffer at the hotel told me that this restaurant is one of the better places in Nice. Not only I've seen better, this was actually pretty bad. Service was on the slower side, but average. The real problem was with food. The dishes are homestyle, and very poorly executed. The dinner started with the the worst foie gras I had ever tried in France and proceeded with greasy and bland dishes. The ambience was OK but did not compensate for the food quality. The location feels very touristy; without the recommendation we got I would not have tried this place. The simple food served can be obtained in the same neighborhood at a fraction of the price, and Nice has more than its fare share of truly good places. Visited on a Sunday evening early September and was surprised to be seated quickly despite our lack of reservation. We sat indoors, and jealously eyed the happy diners sitting on the beautiful patio. We were very lucky to be sat at all! It was humid evening, and it was hot inside. That may be the only complaint I have. We were uncomfortably sweaty (and I lived in Florida until a few months back!) during the first part of the meal. Had we made reservations we likely would have sat in the beautiful patio where the temperature was less severe. MAKE RESERVATIONS. Service was fabulous. Staff spoke English and patiently answered questions. The Menu Niçois is an experience. I loved the soupe de poissons. I couldn't finish it because there was so much soup, but it lived up to my expectations. I recommend la daube et gnocchi. It stands out in my mind as one of my favorite meals in France. The gnocchi was cooked to perfection, the sauce was neither too rich nor too heavy and the stewed meat was so tender it came right apart. Delicious! The risotto safrané façon paëlla was an incredible dish. Less filling than the gnocchi, the flavor was delicious and it had some of the best tasting mussels. Dessert was on point. The pineapple was fresh and light, which was just what I needed after a heavier meal. I assisted in finishing a crème brûlée maison à la vanille Bourbon and I still think about it occasionally. I will certainly visit this restaurant again when I am next in Nice. read more

This place was awful. It was our last meal in France and we had a party of 9. Unfortunately this was the only place with seats available on a Sunday night. I ordered the prix fixe menu and all of my dishes were truly awful. The lamb and olives app, the rabbit entree, and even the dessert was just crap. This place is a quiet oasis in the otherwise more boisterous (and often touristy) pedestrian shopping area of rue Massena. After a couple of disappointing meals elsewhere, it was a relief to find this relaxed and romantic courtyard and feel like we were in for a nice experience. And indeed we were. The food was very good though maybe a bit short of excellent. But it didn't matter to us at all, the vibe in the place was just that nice with the trellis and the candlelight and the foliage, etc. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need. read more

We had made reservations for outside and when we arrived the man who greeted us was very rude. We asked if we could sit in the center area outside and he just said no, and stuck us in a corner against the window. Then we tried to order wine, they were out of that. My friends ordered another dish and our waiter again came back and said they didn't have that either. So we got a different bottle of wine and my three friends all got the beef stew. I had ordered the free range chicken dish because it came with a native chickpea dish that I really wanted to try. Our meals came and our waiter disappeared. My chicken was stuffed with some kind of meat, not chickpeas but I ate it because he never came back and I was hungry. When we were done he finally returned and I asked about the stuffing. His response was "oh we won't have chickpeas until next week". I told him I had ordered it specifically for that reason and he said "well you should have asked when you ordered it" and abruptly walked away. Rude does not begin to describe this kind of behavior. In a city with so many wonderful places to eat, I would avoid this one! read more

Unfortunately, I don't have anything good to say about our visit to this restaurant. To begin with, the waiters and waitresses did just barely see us after we waited a long time to be seated. I think the reason is that they were so stressed out, because our waiter hardly had time to take our order. Then the food was totally tasteless. How can you serve a dish of meat without barely even put salt and pepper on it. This lovely restaurant that was recommended by a Viking Cruise representative was the best one that we visited during our three evenings in Nice. The food was creatively prepared and beautifully presented. Request a table outside if at all possible. The patio area does have heaters for the cooler evenings. Contrary to many European restaurants, the portion size at Maison de Marie can be quite large. Quality is exceptional. read more
