An amazing, unexpected meal. We didn't even have a reservation, but somehow got super lucky just walking in. My friend who made our itinerary had this place on the list of places to eat at, but we didn't have a resy so we didn't have our hopes up. It was fairly late when we walked by. I saw a pretty big crowd outside, shockingly mostly Americans. We put our name in and less than 5 mins later we got seated - ahead of people who were there before us. They led us to a sorta corner table, overlooking the kitchen. We got to watch the talented chefs do work all night. The smells coming from the kitchen honestly got me feeling wild thoughts. Like damn. For some reason we all decided to do a la carte. Maybe because it was late. Someone got risotto, I got the pork chop and the other got lamb. What a treat! Flew into Nice and didn't have anything planned. Luckily was able to book a 9pm rez and had a wonderful time. Do not worry if French is your second language, staff speak English, and well! Menues are all hand written on chalk boards and you have time to review. Few options but I suspect all done extremely well. Our four choices were: the muscles, calamari, duck and beef confit. Muscles: delicious, in a broth so delicate you kept digging to get a taste. Calamari: cooked to.perfection! We got easy reservations by calling the restaurant a few days in advance. The space is small but cozy and the server was pleasant. The food was for the most part very good but one dish ruined the evening! We had the grilled octopus: it was tasty. The stuffed ravioli was good and the beef cheeks were tender and flavorful. The scampi skewer with babaghanoush was the forgettable dish. The eggplants were bland and the shrimps were topped with a brown sauce that was bitter : The whole thing was a mess! The food was fantastic...we LOVED the grilled squid (if you love perfectly grilled squid and amazing garlic flavor), the seriole (aka amberjack) carpaccio--- so delicious! Even though we are four, we had 2 main courses- (1 each) veal liver and the beef cheek with ravioli. They were so incredibly rich and delicious that I am certain to wake up having dreams for years to come...waking up in an anxious sweat of how I get back to eat here again!!!! We spent our last night in Nice here and it was the perfect capstone on our week-long trip to the South of France. We came upon this recommendation from a local woman who was at a Provence winery we visited one afternoon - she told us this was a must visit, so we kept this in our back pocket to end our trip. The setting is wonderful in a little alley off the main square in Nice. The service was top notch and forgiving of our poor French. Here is where my wife and my experience went in two different directions. I had the shredded lamb in phyllo dough over a bed of couscous and vegetables with a sauce and it was wonderful. My wife had the Chef's Risotto which had risotto with herbs and topped with grilled octopus. The octopus was the right texture but too salty. Also the risotto was crunchy which is a no-no. My wife was the one who wanted to try this place for its seafood and I was reluctant. We ended up with completely different experiences compared to our expectations. read more

This was by far one of the best meals I had throughout my entire travels in France. We were lucky to get a table in the back room, which has cute decor and you can watch the chefs cook everything right there. Service was friendly and prompt. The menu changes often, so they have it on an blackboard they bring up to your table. The food was amazing - I got the lamb with gnocchi, and it was sort of a stew where the lamb finished cooking in the gravy-like broth at the bottom. We also got the white fish and the vegetable gnocchi which were also both delicious. To finish, we ordered the cheesecake, which was not only beautiful but also amazingly creamy. My mouth is salivating thinking about how this restaurant so deliciously creates their food. It's tucked into a small side street in the Old Town of Nice. We were sat in back where we experienced the fun of watching the chefs cook in front of us. It's styled in a retro kitchen like space yet somehow does not emit the tackiness you would expect from that vibe. There are cool and corky things along the walls as well. The menu is in French but if you need translation support the staff are there to help. If you have dietary restrictions, just tell the waiter and the chefs should be capable of creating a different dish for you (as they did for me). They had otherwise great recommendations for which dishes to eat. Especially with the cheesecake. I'm drooling it was that good. Don't share it; you'll regret that. Priced reasonably with very fresh ingredients and flavorful preparations. There are chalkboard specialties along with the slated traditional favorites. I had the magret de canard prepared medium rare surrounded by fresh vegetables. Others enjoyed the tuna and the entrecote with bearnaise. The tomato salad! Oh the tomato salad! Tomatoes grow well in this mediterranean climate, so that's the bonus. The olive oil was fresh and had that noted "heat" about it. This is a popular restaurant and while I was there numerous people were turned away at the door due to a lack of a reservation. Clearly, a reservation is recommended. I came for dinner, mid-week in November. The menu is good, with plenty of choice. I enjoyed my beef tongue, while the diner beside me, who chose the same, appeared to be unhappy because his cut of meat was an irregular shape- clearly from lower down of the animal. We had the salmon gravlax with raw beet and fennel, and the grilled calamari with artichokes for our first course - they were both wonderful and fresh and rich. Then we had the osso buco, which was served with a nice piece of marrow, and the veal loin served with gnocchi. Both were served in small pots with rich sauces. We chose Le Comptoir du Marche, on a dark, misty March evening, and wandered in--sans reservations. Wow, what a cozy little place! They welcomed us in and gave a nice little table. The place was full of interesting decor to look at, and full of people as well! The food was delicious and artfully presented. (thus the high-rating) If you want better food, I suggest looking beyond Old Town (e.g. along Rue Grimaldi), because Old Town is full of restaurants targeting tourists - focusing on high-volume, attention grabbing decors, and convenience. Fantastic! This is what great bistro fare should be, and especially in tourist towns such as Nice, isn't. They speak fluent English if necessary but the menu is in French. Starters: great beef tartare as in TripAdvisor and Yelp pictures. Nice and fresh, perfect in presentation, and thoughtful in ingredients. Nightly special crab ravioli with lobster foam, while on the smallish side (4), were formidably crafted with a soft, light, thin dough while not being too delicate and a tremendous filling shining through. This ravioli dish would rival anything similar at any restaurant in Italy. No joke, it was that good. And at 10 euros. Mains: Beef cheek was as advertised and as in pictures - tremendously flavorful without being heavy. No veggies but a half carrot, so you'll be married to meatiness for this dish. Wife's special, pork shank, had more veg and was delightfully prepared. These two mains signify good bistro cooking at its finest. For 14-15 euros, find me better food in Nice. Dessert: split a quick panna cotta, which seems silly in France, yet it was also done with care and attention. The raspberry compote on top was on point without being too sweet. Service was attentive the entire evening and we needed help with translation, which our server was happy to provide. Expect a bit of terseness as the night wears on and the restaurant gets busy. Don't worry - it's not you. The 3-4 servers have a big burden to keep things churning. The bread served is fantastic and the woman at the front was nice enough to disclose which baker they buy it from. From start to finish, this was a truly wonderful meal, a taste of France without the fluff, landing in the middle price-wise and with a very, very high quality:price ratio. My wife and I are good cooks and enjoy a good meal out, ordering things that take too much time to cook or are something we would not make ourselves. This one fit the bill. Highly recommended. Reserve in advance! This meal was so much better than what we had at Chez Acchiardo, it's not even funny. No comparison in the slightest. They take pride in their craft and care about their food. How do I know? I watched a young chef whose knife needed a quick sharpening stop midway through cutting a duck breast, break out a wet stone, give the knife a few sharpenings, clean up, and continue to get the duck breast perfectly sliced. We truly had a dining experience. We walked by when it first opened and there was nobody there. We decided to walk around and when we came back 15 minutes later, it was nearly packed. We were brought olives, olive oil, and a delicious ricotta spread to go with the bread and wine we ordered. The menu was written on a chalkboard in French and the waiter and waitress did a great job of explaining the dishes to us. We started with the shrimp risotto and beef bone marrow. The shrimp was perfectly crunchy and juicy, and the flavours of the risotto paired with it very well. The bone marrow was a unique experience and very savoury. It came with an artichoke spread and mushrooms, all of which when combined together formed a masterpiece. For our main course, we had scallops and beef cheek. The scallops were good but were slightly over seasoned with salt. I would probably have chosen something different. However, the beef cheek was the highlight of the meal. It was perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside yet fork tender. The meat was well accompanied with a vegetable medley and ravioli that accentuated it but did not overpower the taste. For dessert, we had Pavlova. We had no idea what it would actually be and we were not disappointed. A combination of cream, meringue, and lychee fruit was very refreshing and not too filling. I'm pretty sure I was smiling like a little kid the entire meal with excitement. The staff were all amazing and did not rush us at all. They were helpful whenever we needed them and were very knowledgeable about the food. Overall, I would strongly recommend this restaurant. We went to a high priced fancy restaurant last night THEN stumbled across this restaurant on Yelp for tonight. The food was by far much better here than the highly coveted expensive restaurant that we went to before. We had the calamari which was superior to U.S. Not deeply fried but sautéed and beautiful. I had the John Dory fish which was excellent. My husband had the veal which was light and delicious. The monte Blanc pear dessert was truly remarkable and light. And this is one of those restaurants where the menu changes occasionally so they are written on blackboard that they bring to the table, but be ware it is all in French and our servers did not help translate. In the end we ordered some dishes and the food was tasty (not one of the best meals I have ever had, but good). In addition the food is properly priced and it is neither expensive nor cheap but well priced. It is tucked away on a less traversed street in old town Nice which I feel adds to its charm. Situated a little away from tourist traffic, Comptoir Du Marche provides a touch of French with little English from waiters and menu in French only and hand written to represent the changing and seasonality of the offerings. Were recommended a few items and ended up with the onion tart to start and duck and octopus over couscous for mains. Also had some white and red wine for $4 each, though plenty of bottles can be had for less than $30 easily. Fresh baguette to start really was quality and olive oil perfect. Onion tart was basically a dry French onion soup with wet onions and a soft bread bottom. Sardines on top added a different flavor but overall a very nice opener especially for bread and onion lovers. Octopus dish extremely good looking and tasty. Seafood cooked well and couscous great with a slight hint of truffle oil. Arugula makes this a healthier option to boot. Duck is a full meat course. Fresh carrot and mushroom and potato on the side make this a meat soup without the broth. Duck again cooked perfectly.
