Went here for lunch for the first time today as my brother and sister in law like it. We really enjoyed our food. It was a nice day so we sat outside and they were attentive to us which was nice. Inside the restaurant is very quiet and would be a good place on a rainy day.

Wowza. Best Mexican food I think I've ever had. This place was amazing, service and food was top notch. This spinach and cheese Papusa is living in my head rent free to this day. Probably the best bite of food I've ever had. The man serving us did his job with pride, answered every question of ours with a smile. He was absolutely amazing. I believe this is his family's establishment and you could see the pride he has for the food they serve. It really impressed me to see this. I will most definitely go back and I will send all of my friends here. The environment was so clean, so comfy, and the prices were insanely cheap. Margaritas less than $10, papusas less than $4 (and huge!). I also got an order of flautas, and each flauta had a different protein in it! Their menu is so well thought out and I cannnnnnot say enough good things!!!!!!!!!!!

Dining here is like that Seinfeld episode, "The Strike", where the woman he is dating is beautiful one moment, then scary the next. The first time here, everything was so great, we were like YES! We've found our favorite Mexican restaurant in Salem! The food (see photos) was delicious, the Margaritas were perfect, and our waiter was so amazing, we left a HUGE tip (we often do but this even more extra) and left there feeling like we'd return again and again. This guy went above and beyond to be helpful in making menu suggestions, was warm and kind and efficient...just really great. The next time, it was like we were in some bad parallel universe. I hesitate to write a bad review, and if you've read any of my other reviews, you know I nearly always say positive things, love to support local businesses, and am pretty easy to please. I'll never pompously call myself that dreaded term so overused (..."foodie"...eyeroll...). First off, we did get a table quickly after entering, but the person who seated us literally threw menus on the table without a word and was gone. Then began a half-hour wait while NO ONE brought any water or acknowledged our existence, maybe just to say "Hey sorry, we're really busy tonight and will be with you soon", or even take a drink order which would have held us over for the long remainder of our wait. What made this exasperating was that a waitress was waiting on the table directly opposite us, and we're literally sitting two feet away being ignored. No eye contact or acknowledgement whatsoever. It began to get so ridiculous, we both wanted to leave, but being polite dummies, we tried to wait "a little longer". To make things even more annoying, that table was occupied by a large older couple, staring at their cell phones and not speaking to each other the entire time, and continuously eavesdropping on our conversation (by staring at us every time we quietly made a joke about being hungry, thirsty, trying to talk about other things to pass the time, etc.). Finally after half an hour, my son got up and went to the reception counter to ask if we could get some service or if they were just too busy to wait on us, we were leaving. As my son calmly walked from our table to say all this, the male of this charming couple said loudly to his equally charming female companion, "Where's HE going!", so loudly of course I could not help but hear him as I sat there alone. The entire situation was fubared. A server then finally appeared and took a drink order. We both ordered a Margarita, and I don't know if it was out of trying to make up for the long wait, or something less positive, but those drinks were the strongest either one of us had ever had--and not in a tasty, pleasant way. On a long-empty stomach, it was not a great situation. We ordered food which was no longer enjoyable by the time we finally ate (one hour after entering the restaurant). The server was not great and the entire experience left me with one thought: never going back as there are so many other dining establishments in downtown Salem to spend our hard-earned money at instead. (The attached photos were from our FIRST and much more pleasant visit.)

The menu lists numerous gluten-free items and vegan items. Allergies were clearly stated at the beginning of the dining experience. - Almost ordered the Lomo Saltado (labeled GF) and the menu states that it contains soy sauce (not tamari, a GF substitute). We asked if it was gluten free (as we know soy sauce is absolutely not gf) confirmed with the kitchen that it did in fact contain soy sauce and was not gluten free. - ordered a GF and Vegan cake, it was served with sweetened condensed milk. Once again confirmed by the server/kitchen. The condensed milk was supposed to be "decoration". - family communicated multiple times about listed and unlisted allergens--some of the menu items contained no icons about being gluten-free, and were in fact gluten-free (no cross contamination either) **IF YOU EAT HERE PLEASE BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR ABOUT YOUR ALLERGIES AND CHECK WITH THE KITCHEN. It is completely irresponsible to list items as allergen-free on a menu when they actually contain those ingredients. The same goes for vegan and vegetarian options. 2. The reason this review is not 0-1 stars is the server. She demonstrated a clear desire to learn about the menu items, communicate with the kitchen, and accommodate as necessary while maintaining a positive and professional attitude; this review is in no way a knock on her service skills. 3. Someone came out after the meal without introducing themselves or providing their position and simply asked how the food was. After some back and forth, they asked what the restaurant could do to provide a positive experience, and we thought it was fair for the fake-vegan dessert to be comped. The kitchen comped the two desserts that were ordered, which was very much appreciated. They also stated that the allergen issues would never happen again. Unfortunately the positives aspects of this dining experience were overshadowed by the complete lack of understanding when it came to common allergens. Wishing them the best and that they able to better disclose allergens in the future.

Service was very friendly and personable. As I was there, a lot of regulars came in and were greeted warmly. Always a good sign. The complementary chips and salsa were just okay, but I did enjoy the refried beans they included. I went with the Combination Los Dos Hermanos, which features some Salvadoran dishes. It comes with a pupusa filled with shredded pork and cheese and a tamale filled with chicken. The pupusa is kind of like a tortilla packet. I found mine to be very delicious, with yummy pork and rich cheese. The tamale was good too. I loved the tangy cabbage salad that came with the main dishes, and the fried yucca root was super tasty too. The rice was okay, and the beans were good; I think they might have been red silk beans, but I am not sure about that. I was checked in on a few times, and it was a great lunch experience. In another Spiderverse, I am a taco. That is how much I LOVE tacos! I could eat them every day! And to be expected, Suzy's Taqueria did not disappoint. I ordered two street chicken tacos and WOW!! The tacos were filling and extremely tasty. I didn't even need the added sauces included as they were flavorful without them. I honestly could have had a couple more. I was deeply satisfied with my lunch order. Since this is a vendor in a food hall, I didn't really interact with the staff as much. My order was placed at a kiosk - which had no wait time. Once my order was placed, the wait for the tacos to prepared was less than 10 minutes. The server brought them out to my table - which was my only interaction with the staff. They were kind. As for the food hall itself, it wasn't too busy - especially for lunchtime. So, that was great because the wait time for the food was minimal. The food hall was lively, clean and had ample seating. There's also a bar within the food hall - so, if you wanted some libations, that was also an option. All in all, it's a great little spot with various cuisines. There's enough to tickle your fancy pending what you have a taste for. Again, I knew the Mexican vendor was calling my name and I am so happy I went with them. Again, they did not disappoint. The food was fresh and the price point was amazing. Very affordable lunch prices. I will probably venture back to try out the bao spot or the pizzeria.
