The front office staff is unprofessional, rude, and they make assumptions about your coverage without even looking into your plan. They are going to run this place into the ground. Two visits ago, when I was checking out, the black lady was on an active FaceTime phone call and she ended up confusing me twice with two different people. She ended up wrongfully charging me once and almost did it a second time because she was too busy on her phone. That is after I told her multiple times what my name was. That is extremely unprofessional of her to be on her phone when she is talking to a client. My last cleaning a few weeks ago on a Thursday, I inquired about a night guard at the front desk. She immediately said no, I do not have any coverage for that. She didn't even bother looking into my plan or calling Delta Dental. She just assumed I didn't. I ended up calling them myself later that day and they said I did in fact have that coverage. The conversation took 10 minutes. I called the office back that day and said I just spoke to the insurance and I did have the benefit. I was told I would get a call back. No call on Friday so I called them back on Monday and they made no progress. They then told me it would be a few days till they get back to me. What? I just verified it within 10 minutes on the phone. These people are an absolute joke. I have since taken my business elsewhere. read more

I needed to find a new dentist so I made an appointment at La Mesa Hills Dentistry. It's located in a converted single family dwelling so street-only parking is difficult. The xrays and cleaning went well, except that I asked for numbing gel to cut the discomfort and was told they charge $25 extra for that. My previous dentist didn't charge for it at all. I was told I needed a crown so made the appointment to return. Got a reminder by text, fine, I get those all the time. The day before the appointment I got another text. This one said if I didn't confirm my appointment by replying to that text, they would just cancel my appointment. I've seen hundreds of medical and dental practitioners in my lifetime and none of them have had such a policy. I am a busy person and don't have time to respond to texts unnecessarily. And to me that was not necessary. When I make an appointment, that IS my confirmation that I will attend. It may save them from no-show appointments but it's disrespectful of my time, and I'm the paying patient. And what if my phone is dead or I happen to not see the text? Then I show up for my appointment and find it was canceled? I don't need that kind of stress added to my already stressful life, so I canceled the appointment and will try my luck at Point Loma Family Dentist. read more

TERRIBLE FRONT DESK STAFF! The dentist and hygienist were extremely nice and helpful. The front desk however is filled with 3 employees who should all be fired for having no idea how to do their jobs or communicate properly. The initial phone call to set up my first appointment I gave them my name, social, insurance and phone number. They said that's all they needed and scheduled the appointment. Fast forward 2 weeks, the day before my appointment. They call me and said they had been trying to get ahold of me for 2 weeks and I gave them the wrong insurance info (which I did. So that's on me) but after further digging. They weren't actually trying to call me. They admitted they had "wrote my number down wrong" and just figured it out the day before my appointment. So they moved my appointment out another 3 weeks and I had to take another day off from work. The initial appointment happens. The dentist prescribes a different toothpaste. Go to the pharmacy to pick it up. They never got a prescription sent over. Call the office back and tell them. They have no idea how that could happen so they send over another prescription. What do you know. Prescription never goes through. Call the office for a third time. They try a different pharmacy. Go figure. Again, no prescription. Now 2 months later, the day of the next appointment, for the deep cleaning. I call them and let them know I changed jobs and was wondering what insurance I could use. I asked the financial lady at the front desk if it was her job to figure if my insurance was covered and that's when she came unglued on me for asking a simple, harmless question if that was in her scope of work. We go back and forth for a minute on the phone until she finally blames ME for them losing my number the first time after I told her this experience has been awful from start to finish. I still showed up for the appointment and what do you know, as soon as I walk through the door she still has a terrible attitude and tells me they will only do this one cleaning and then I need to find a new dentist and before any of that can happen I have to apologize to her. So I eat my pride and still apologize to her because I really just want to get my gums taken care of. And go figure, she still continues to be extremely rude and combative even after I apologized like she asked (even though I never should have) If you are thinking of going here you should run away and save yourself the trouble. I was a patient for 4 years at this office. I was always treated very well. The doctor is knowledgeable and great at what he does but on 11/25/24 I was treated like discarded trash by Natalie (front desk). While out of town my tooth started hurting, turns out I need a root canal. I decided to wait until I got back home to get it done because I trust the doctor at La Mesa Hills Dentistry. Instead of having the compassion and understanding of dealing with a patient in pain, Natalie was short and rude. She didn't like my tone because I didn't say please, so she told me they couldn't see me. This is trully disheartenin. I Have been a long time patient, in need of help and if I don't provide a sweet and kind voice when I talk to the front desk I am dumped and thrown out with the trash at my most dire need. I've been coming here for 10 years and haven't had one bad experience. As someone who had an absolute fear of dentist visits due to poor treatment from previous offices, the team here changed my mind completely. The receptionists are always friendly and accommodating, especially when I've had two emergency situations. The staff really go above and beyond when it comes to meeting your needs. They are very upfront about pricing and don't push for unnecessary procedures, the choice is left up to you as a patient to what you prefer based on the options provided. I actually look forward to my visits now, and that's not something I would have ever thought previous to being a patient here! read more

My husband and I joined as patients in La Mesa Hills dentistry n July 2023. We started with some treatments a few months ago. My husband had to have some crowns, root canal and extractions (the latter two were contracted to different doctors). I was told that I need to do some dentures / implant work on my upper gum. At this point we were pretty impressed with the doctor and most his staff. On November 19, 2024 I emailed Dr. Fjelstedt asking for a detailed list of costs associated with the estimated dental work to be performed by him for me. I didn't get an answer. I called the office on November 25th to follow up and was told by office manager Natalie to expect it on the afternoon of the same day. I didn't receive it. I called again a week later - left a voicemail - to no avail. Called again on December 5 and left a voicemail, my husband left an additional message - again to avail. I wrote an email to Dr. Fjelstedt on December 6 describing my disappointment at this behavior and concluding that he's not interested to do the work for whatever reason. My husband, my daughter who started to be a patient of the doctor with her family and myself are extremely disappointed and amazed at such a non-courteous and disrespectful manner of running a business. read more

Not all dental practices are equal even given the similar quality of the dentists at each practice. Some are corporate owned. Others are stand alones. Some practices that were bought recently for 500,000 dollars or more need to get a return on investment quite quickly. Thus some practices do unnecessary expensive work. Others do what needs to be done and do not perform unnecessary, expensive work. La Mesa Hills Dentistry is an honest, competent, state of the art practice. They only do what is necessary. Two weeks or so ago I had an appointment to look at an old crown that popped off. I was able to place it back on. But since it came off I wanted the crown and tooth looked at. Dr.Fjeldsted removed the crown. Said the tooth was fine. He could have said that the old crown needed to be replaced for 1200 dollars. He cemented it back on for 180 dollars. Ethical, competent, and trustworthy. You will be well served dental wise and pocket wise at LM Hills Dentistry. You are in great hands at LM Hills Dentistry. read more

Each procedure that I needed was explained in advance and any co-payments I had were also discussed. Never felt surprised by anything. Felt like I was being upsold and then charged $25 for wanting my X-rays emailed. I'm giving them 2 stars because I don't have my second option yet & will edit accordingly once I do. The hygienist here was very sweet and took the time to explain random things. I didn't initially feel like I was getting sold (even though she did offer fluoride treatment for $45) until the doctor talked to me. The office manager and dr have some weird energy that made me not trust anything they recommended from then on. I immediately called my old dentist to get a second opinion from him...worth the $75 out of pocket because I trust him 100%! I only came here because my insurance doesn't take my old dentist so I had to find someone new. So I called to get my X-rays emailed and they charged me $25 for that. I've gotten X-rays sent for $5-10 but like...what??? So getting a second opinion is costing $100 but having peace of mind is well worth it. I know I need work done but I truly believe they're being over aggressive in what actually needs work. Like I said, I'll update accordingly, however I won't be returning to this office. read more

Not sure how anyone would think the front desk staff is friendly. Even one of these good reviews said they were not warm and fuzzy. They literally ignore you when they come in the for as they're often in some loud conversation with themselves. The first few times I went in they were okay but the last few times, when I asked questions regarding my bill, they were rude and aggressive. I'm guessing it's because they do creative billing. Ask for a cleaning, which should be free with insurance, and they schedule you for a periodontal appt. That way, they get you to pay more out of pocket and you see the hygienist instead of the dentist and you don't get xrays. It's a win- win for them. I asked why I was having to pay, as they conveniently charged me before having the work done, and they gaslighted me by saying I always paid. I thought for sure I had not ever paid for cleanings before... and I was right. After calling my insurance I found they had bill coded me not for a routine cleaning, but for periodontal appointment. I already have a periodontist that, they themselves, referred me to. That's not at all what I asked for. When confronted, they were super rude and condescending; basically just trying to get me out the door. And watch when they schedule your appt. The one before my last they bill coded me correctly but they scheduled me within 6 months. Insurance will only pay for cleanings every 6 months so I had the privilege of paying for it out of pocket. They conveniently told me this after my cleaning. See how that works? When they have you pay before you get the work done, it's so they get your money before you notice you're not seeing the dentist, only the hygeinist. When they have you pay after you have get work done, it's when your insurance won't cover it. So you have no choice. ( Obviously if they told you before, you would likely leave and comeback when Insurance will pay). I mean really, what kind of front desk doesn't make sure your cleanings are 6 months apart? One that is incompetent or just doesn't care. I also find it incredibly convenient that there's now a super sweet front desk review on Yelp all of a sudden. That's not suspicious at all. Just a note that my review has nothing to do with Dr. F. He's awesome. Everyone who works in the back is great. If it wasn't for the front desk, I would still be a patient there. The facility is nice, the hygienist was great. So they get 1 star for that. Beware of hidden fees, beware of incredibly long wait times to see the doctor after a cleaning is done. (the "normal" 15-30 minute wait between my check in at 8:30 for my scheduled 8:45 appointment and being taken back at 9:00 did take place - but I don't think you can escape that anywhere) The cleaning itself was fine. They recommended that I get a special laser cleaning performed, so I said "sure why not" and it took about 5 minutes. Then the hygienist wrapped up and said that the doctor would be in to perform the exam in a few minutes. That turned into 10 minutes, then 20, then at 35 minutes - and no one available to ask what is going on - I just went to the front desk and asked what was going on. At that point I had been there for two full hours (for a regular 6 month cleaning.) I explained that I've been waiting over 30 minutes for the doctor, and I have to go because I have work to get back to. They said "ok" (there was never a check in with the doctor, an apology for the wait, or anything like that - just "ok" like it was a normal thing that a patient gets up and out of the room after waiting for 35 minutes). Then, they said that I owed $40 for the laser cleaning. It was never explained to me that there was a charge for this. Just that they recommended it, which I had agreed to. I told them that the hygienist never said there was a charge, they went to ask the hygienist and came back saying "yes she told you that", to which I replied "no, she never did. I wouldn't have accepted that if she did". they went and asked her again, and they said "oh yeah, she didn't tell you about the price" and they waived it. But then heard the receptionists saying to each other "just mark his file to not offer that again" ..... first, offer it - but also tell your patients that there is an associated fee. second, I will not return to your office ever again, anyway, so I will save you guys the trouble of "not offering it again" read more

This place is honestly has been great for me. So far, I've had to get a crown put in and the process was very smooth. The crown is better than the one I have had done before by a different dentist. The dentist himself was polite and friendly. The assistants were friendly as well. I liked that the front desk lady gave me a price breakdown of each visit, how much the insurance charges, etc. There were no extra charges at the end. No mess, no fuss. This is my new regular dentist. It is expensive, but dentistry is just stupidly expensive in general. Blame the American Healthcare system. read more

Minority patients beware: Have you ever gone into a provider's office and left feeling heartsick and shaken? This is how I felt after leaving this office, having received some of the most disgusting treatment that I've ever experienced. Although, I have insurance, I was told that I would have to pay quite a bit of money out of pocket to get a crown. I'm sure they come across this scenario often: shocked dental patient is trying to figure out how to pay for much needed care. However, the smugness, condescending indifference and complete apathy with which this news was delivered to me by Natalie, the office manager, was new. After requesting to speak with a dentist or even someone above the office manager, I was told that there was no one else and asked to leave. At this point, I informed Natalie that she was rude and that I would prefer to work with someone else because of her poor treatment and customer service. I told her that most patients don't remember the forms they signed 8 months ago outlining service payment. Natalie at this point told me that they were refusing to see me in their office and that if I didn't leave, she would call the police. Call the police for what? Telling her that she was rude? At no point was I aggressive or threatening. At no point did I scream or use profanity. Is my requesting a superior so threatening that it warrants calling the police and making feel like a criminal? Ultimately, I turned my attentions to a dental assistant to ask for the correct way to submit a formal complaint. I quietly sat in a chair in the waiting area to speak with a dentist regarding my poor interaction with Natalie, and was told that I would have to wait until the dentist had seen his very last client of the day. It was 1:30 pm. I left just in time to see the police pull up. I work as a case manager and I cannot tell you how many angry clients I have spoken to; sometimes yelling, often frustrated, but they are ALL human. I know that they are not angry at me, they are frustrated at the situation they are in. I would not so much as DREAM of treating my clients the way I was treated today. Instead of treating your patients like criminals, maybe try to not resort to subtle racism and choose another route. If I were white, the police would not have been called and everyone there knew it. The situation didn't warrant that kind of escalation. If you are a minority, please do yourself a favor and choose another dentist. There are too many providers out there who will treat you with respect and try to work with you. With the history of black people and having the police called on us unnecessarily, it's not worth the risk. If you do go here and experience mistreatment, please make sure to speak with your insurance company and file a grievance against them. read more

I switched dentists because there was a promotion on Facebook for $75 gift card to Lululemon. Since I didn't really like my previous dentist I thought why not? I'm so glad I switched because I feel really comfortable at this new dentist. The office staff were nice, the music wasn't boring, my dental hygienist was amazing and I had a nice conversation with the dentist and I never felt rushed. As someone who suffers from anxiety and grew up in a low income household that avoided dentist visits likes the plague, I was DREADING coming here knowing that I had not seen a dentist in years. But all of the staff made my visits dare I say... pleasant? I chipped one of my front teeth a few weeks ago and was seriously distressed about it. So I contacted the office via email over the weekend and they got me in within a day. My new insurance just assigned me to this office in January so it was my first visit there. The staff was really friendly and no one gave me those disapproving lectures or stares that most of us are used to getting when admitting that we don't come in for regular cleanings or have neglected to floss every day. Just helpful suggestions and information without any shaming. They also checked how much everything would be with my insurance BEFORE they did anything to make sure I wanted to/was able to move forward with it. Absolutely no hidden charges or surprises. Dr. Fjeldsted fixed my tooth right up. Everyone that knows says they can hardly tell the difference. Bottom line: if you're someone who usually avoids going to the dentist because of anxiety, shame, or concerns about cost, this is the office for you. read more

La Mesa Hills Dentistry is a lovely place. My husband recently changed jobs, therefore insurance, and we needed to find a new dentist. He chose La Mesa Hills because they received so many great reviews. We brought our kids in as well, and the staff was very understanding and patient with each of their dental concerns. My son is especially tentative around anything labeled "check up" and they were constantly checking on his well being and letting me know how he was doing. The office itself is also gorgeous! On a separate occasion, my parents were visiting from out of town and my father was having issues with some dental work that he had when he was at home. I am very disappointed and upset about my experience with Michel's dental over the last several months. I bought the Groupon for $35 for the exam and cleaning. Thought I'd get my cleaning and be on my merry way. Seemed like a good deal, but as of today, I've spent over $1200 in their office. After my initial exam I was told that I needed a "deep cleaning/scaling." I will admit that my teeth had lots or tartar build up, so I agreed to it. That cost me $175. Plus, repairing cavities and fixing my front tooth that was chipped and needed new bonding (another $950). Without insurance the prices are pretty steep. I know this. However, today my appointment went less than smoothly to say the least and I left very very upset. I got in the chair and the dental hygienist started cleaning. 2 minutes in and she starts up selling me on some "bacteria removing laser". I said "I don't know, maybe?" She says it's $39.99 and its best to do it "right now" before we get the cleaning going. So, out of fear that she won't clean my teeth well if I don't agree, I say ok reluctantly. She proceeds to use the "laser" around all my teeth. Felt like nothing was happening I don't really know what the point was. Seems like a waste of money to me and just a way for the office to make more money off people who can't say no. Plus, I still few fuzziness all over my teeth... Very disappointing. When I went to pay for my visit, the girl at the front desk asks me if I want to purchase their "plan" for cleanings. It's $399 for 3 cleanings per year. Yikes. At first I said yes, but then I said I would think about it, because that's a lot of money to put up front. I'm a waitress, with no medical or dental insurance... If rather pay my rent than worry more about my teeth. Finally, she gives me the bill for my cleaning and its $160. (With the $39.99 charge for the "bacteria laser") I was STUNNED. I thought worst case scenario they would charge me double what the Groupon price was for the cleaning, I even thought they might honor the Groupon price. Silly me, I guess. $120 to polish my teeth? I couldn't believe it. They should have told me the price upfront. That's what's most upsetting I think. I would've gone elsewhere to get my teeth cleaned or bought another Groupon for a different office. To make matters worse, as I'm paying out (clearly upset at how much I am being charged) the girl says something about my next appointment. I said "I think I'm just going to find a new dentist." Her response? "Mmmmkay. That's fine." Really? What a slap in the face! I Literally just shelled over $160 for someone to scrape my teeth for 10 minutes... spent my hard earned money in this dentist's office over several months--- paying OUT OF POCKET exuberant amounts of money ... and your response is "Mkay"? I am extremely disappointed with the practices of this office. I initially came here for an exam and cleaning. Once the exam was complete, I was given a treatment plan and a cash price for these services, since I did not have insurance. Fast forward 5 months. I now have dental insurance and contacted the office letting them know I was ready to move forward with said treatment. I was told that I would get a call back from the office manager to schedule once they have figured out my schedule of fees from my insurance company. I get a phone call from Natalie, the office manager today, and was shocked by the amount. Especially because I had cross-checked the treatment plan that was given to me, against my dental policy and the codes that were necessary for treatment. She proceeded to tell me that their were line items that they didn't originally include on my treatment plan because they were offering me a discount for being cash pay but now that they would be billing my insurance, those codes would now be billed. So... You're telling me 'You were going to perform treatment on me that wasn't on my treatment plan but once I got insurance you decide to add these treatments back to the plan so you can bill a higher amount' If that's not fraud, I don't know what is. Continuing these types of actions will eventually get them stuck with a malpractice suit. read more

I became a patient due to my dental insurance plan. My intention was to avail myself of cleanings. (I live out of the country for a big chunk of the average year.) But then fate took over. I experienced excruciating dental pain a couple weeks before my departure across the Pacific. There was an infection under an old crown and a root canal was necessary. The staff was upbeat and Dr. Fjelsted established good rapport. He understood that I would be going to my regular dentist abroad to fit the permanent crown over his work. He made sure to immediately transmit the X-rays to my other dentist. What could have been traumatic was handled smoothly, with professionalist and good cheer. I look forward to this year's cleanings! Shady practice! My wife and I purchased an offer for an exam/x-rays/cleaning through Groupon. At my initial screening, Natalie (the office manager) marked my Groupon as redeemed and had me complete their new patient paperwork. Initially, they said that I was an hour late, but it was her mistake and I had made the appoint via email, so I had proof that I was on time. So, it took them about 35 minutes to call me back since they weren't expecting me. After some rushed x-rays (the technician was a nice guy and seemed professional enough) they escorted me to another exam lane to wait some more. After about ten minutes the doctor came in to review my x-rays and poke around in my mouth for a few seconds. He rattled off some dentist jargon to Natalie and then split -- not super impressed, but dentists aren't really the type of people I find that interesting, so the faster I can get in and out of their bungalow, the better. Wait again for 10 minutes. Natalie returns with a sheet listing just over a dozen line items, prices ranging from $25 to $1000. She reviewed the quote in detail and offered a cash discount or financing since I did not currently have dental insurance. I was then sent to reception to schedule my cleaning and next appointments... No cleaning, no nothing. Seems like I bought a Groupon to waste an afternoon in their office and be told how much money I was going to need to pay them over the next six months. They literally didn't do a single thing to my teeth. In fact, my mouth felt better before the visit! Fast forward six months: my wife called to make an appointment to have her teeth cleaned and schedule the work she wanted taken care of (we have dental insurance now). The receptionist ran our insurance and her new total was double what it would have been with cash! Our out of pocket amounts had skyrocketed to "used 2012 Honda Civic" numbers! Hahaha -- sure guys! They are a fraud. They use Groupon to get the masses in, show off a bit and then they jack up their rates once you're in the chair. Don't bother. Most folks avoid dentists for the normal reasons (they're masochists), but these guys add a whole new layer! read more

I have had terrible experiences with different dentists in the past, from being quoted for unnecessary procedures to receiving poor quality work that was painful. So I was extremely hesitant to come in to any dentist office for a while. I picked this place after reading the reviews and I am so very happy I did. The office is small but well kept and clean. The receptionists greet me by name and answer any and all questions I have in regards to costs and payments. Paul and Jo who performed my crown and filling were gentle and made me feel comfortable the entire time. They also did not push for any unnecessary procedures like many dentists now a days do. The staff and environment here at this office are the best I've ever experienced. I've been a patient of Dr. Fjeldsted for over a year now and he and his staff are amazing. Everyone is warm and friendly, the office is nice and clean. Parking is great, they have a small lot in the back or there's plenty of street parking. He is the only dentist in his office but the wait times are short and the visits are quick and easy. His work is amazing too. I recently had a crown put in and it looks sooo good and natural, you can't even tell it's a crown. He doesn't rush through the visits, answers any questions or concerns I have and is very thorough in explaining my treatment. I'm getting my Invisalign treatment here as well and I can't wait to see the end result. I definitely recommend Dr. Fjeldsted for anyone looking for a dentist. read more

Very unprofessional. I call them in the morning to schedule an appointment, leave a message, and no one gets back to me. Then I call again, and the attitude there is this: take it or leave it. This is one of those places where they try to milk you as much as possible. All I need is a quick dental cleaning, which I get every 4-5 months. But no, they have a ridiculous policy of seeing you first for an exam, and only then schedule a second appointment for a dental cleaning. Who has that much time?! Why is it even necessary other than oversell you on things you don't need. read more

I went in with possibly one of the worst set of teeth they've ever seen, and now I have the smile of a celebrity! The staff is very friendly and the doctor and assistants know exactly what they're doing and are always willing to work with you to make sure you're happy with the outcome.
