Communication here is horrible. My dentist of 12 years took medical retirement, a few days before my scheduled cleaning. I had two goals, I needed a cleaning and I had a chipped front tooth. Made an appointment for what I thought would be cleaning. It turned out that they only did paperwork on day 1. Came back later, had x-rays, had cleaning, wanted to deal with the chipped tooth. They said I needed a bite guard and a back tooth fixed. I told them the teeth grinding issue was resolved 10 years earlier, it was caused by daytime habits, not night time grinding. Over a decade of X-rays showed that. What about my chipped front tooth? I was provided with a written treatment plan with a need for a mouth guard, an additional appointment for a future cleaning, and a need to have the rear tooth worked on. And still nothing about my noticeable front tooth problem. I left with an impression that they did not believe me when I told them that the daytime teeth grinding was resolved. And I also left with no mention of fixing my front tooth. PS: I am not a frequent complainer on Yelp. Maybe once every 5 years. This one was blatant. read more

My husband and I forgo nearer dental offices and travel 30+ minutes to this one because Dr Afrashteh is our favorite dentist. He's always jolly and friendly and interacts with kids well. There is a dental hygienist in the office Mika who consistently gives me the most thorough routine dental cleanings I've ever experienced in my life. I didn't even know care like that could exist. She's nice and gentle and explains everything as she's doing it. Other staff members in the office have been friendly. There once was a discrepancy with the bill but they resolved it. I went in for the first time expecting a regular cleaning after I got my initial X-rays done but instead the focus was almost entirely on selling me additional services. I was surprised that they didn't just provide the basic cleaning I scheduled for, and instead recommended more expensive procedures right away telling me that "we are way past the general cleaning since your teeth require a deeper clean" It left me feeling pressured rather than cared for. Worst office experience ever!! Perodonist said it was a one day simple fix. Front office wanted to charge me $1850 for a two day procedure. I have great dental insurance. Got the codes and we disagreed on the final billed which keep going higher. Talked to their office manager Stephanie. I explained the discrepancy between their bills and what insurance would cover. Today, they were able to get a lot of things done and we were done in a little over an hour. Dr. Shervin and his team are the best! They made sure that I was comfortable and took excellent care of me! Highly recommend Dr. Shervin for your next visit! I went to La Mesa Modern Dental a number of years back, and they wanted ridiculous prices for a porcelian crown, yet they also made crowns there with a CEREC machine or similar at a fraction of the cost. So in a couple of days I had the crown they made cemented in. After like two days the crown fell out. I went back and talked with them and they said they could put it back in. So why would I have them do that? So it would just fall out again. I had nothing but trouble with that tooth and I never got my money back which was around $250. Recently I called them and they said they had no record of my crown or visit on file. I never heard of a dental office not keeping the records of patients permanently. I can not say enough good things about this dentist office. It is never fun to have to go to the dentist especially for a dental emergency. But I have to say from my first interaction when I called with a dental emergency was with Nayeli, and what a gem she is! She's going places, she has the best customer service I have seen. She listened to my panicked state and got me in asap. I ended up having to get a tooth extracted and get a crown, over all almost took a year for the entire healing process and I have to say every single person from Nayeli to the surgeon was amazing. I have nothing but great things to say about this office and particularly Dr.Al-Khouri! I had a crown done on my lower back molar and my two front teeth about a year ago and they are holding up beautifully with no rubbing, gum irritation or bite issues. They also look totally natural. I've had several cleanings done and was never "up sold" on unnecessary treatments like others have mentioned. In fact, Dr. Al-Khouri thought I might need a root canal on the molar she had to put a crown on. She said she wouldn't be sure until she drilled into the tooth. She was able to do just the crown and no root canal. I think a dishonest dental practice would have done the root canal since the patient (me!) wouldn't have known either way if it was truly needed. My biggest fear was getting my two front crowns replaced. My old crowns were done 20 years ago, porcelain fused with metal and I hated the way they looked and my gums were receding away from them. They had to go, but I was scared of paying so much for new crowns and not seeing much improvement. Dr. Al-Khouri was so kind and reassuring, and she also was very knowledgeable about cosmetic dentistry. She really came through for me and restored my smile. Before and after photos attached. My initial interaction was with a Nayeli, who was super sweet and helpful! The other receptionist were also great with answering any questions I had about insurance and cost. I saw Dr. Ghazia Kazmi for X-rays and a cleaning, as well as a consult for my wisdom teeth removal. This was my first time at the dentist in years, as I absolutely hate going. I loved her care and knowledge, as well as not pressuring me into additional services. I get very nervous at the dentist, so I just wanted to be in and out! Yesterday, I had my wisdom teeth removed by a surgeon that comes to the office a couple times a month. I had never been anesthetized before so I was pretty nervous going in. I can not say enough positive things about this place. Any time I've had to have work done (which is often lately) they work so well with me financially. In 2023 my insurance SUCKED. They have great payment plans that helped with that. Come 2024 I have GREAT insurance now and even though some things are way less expensive They still over a payment plan which is so helpful. This was my first time visiting La Mesa Modern Dental group however, my family have been patients of Dr. Afrashteh's for quite some time. He recently relocated 3 hours away from where we live but our experience with him has always been so amazing and I didn't want to jeopardize losing the quality of care that he provides. So we make the 3 hour drive just to continue to be seen by him! From day one he has ALWAYS made my daughters and I feel extremely comfortable, taking the time to explain and talk through the care we receive in a way that we understand. He continues to go above and beyond and the entire office staff greeted us with friendly smiles and made us feel welcome. La Mesa Modern Dental has been my dentist since I moved to San Diego. Unfortunately with Covid and a few other things going on with my life it had been a couple years since I last visited. Something must have changed with their ownership or office staff since my last visit, but what a nightmare. I booked an appointment online with no issues and got a call from the office in the morning the day before my appointment to confirm me, no issues at all. Later the same day the office called back and insisted that I reschedule because there was not going to be enough time to do the "very large number of X-Rays" that I would need because it had been so long since my last visit. Given the short notice for me, my calendar was already booked up for work and I couldn't shift the appointment to anything within a week. I asked if I could opt out of the X-Rays for this visit so that I could keep the appointment and they refused and pushed to reschedule. I fully understand the desire to have updated X-Rays, but I've never had a dentist anywhere insist that X-Rays be performed as a condition of performing a cleaning or consultation. They've always been optional because they're generally not covered by insurance. I can only guess that this is a way for the office to generate more revenue on top of normal cleaning reimbursements. Had the office reached out a few days in advance or been flexible with this X-ray "requirement", ideally BEFORE the same office CONFIRMED my appointment, I might have been able to rearrange my schedule to accommodate. This whole interaction left me frustrated so I ended up booking an appointment with another provider nearby. read more

If you want to actually have a dentist appointment, don't even consider this place. I waited 2 months for an appointment and then they cancelled my end-of- day appointment with less than 24 hour notice. When I tried to reschedule for another afternoon appointment, they said they didn't have any availability for 2.5 months. I asked to speak with the office manager but the office manager didn't call me back for over a week. I called back and again asked for the manager. They were unavailable but I was promised that they would call me back before end of day. They did not. It's impossible to get anything done at this place. This place has created the most frustrating dental experience I have ever had. They are a huge disappointment. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. UPDATE: The office manager finally called me back after over a week. He was hostile, condescending and not at all helpful. If you want to be verbally abused, I fully recommend this office. An absolute NIGHTMARE dealing with La Mesa Modern Dental! I waited months deciding whether to post this, as I was hoping to be helped by the place that caused my nightmare. The entire ordeal started about March earlier this year (2023). I had moved to San Diego, and decided to look for a new dentist. Having never had a cavity or issue my entire life. I found La Mesa dental off a google search, researched them a bit and decided to make an appointment for a cleaning as I was changing jobs and would not have dental insurance any longer. I went in for a simple CLEANING with ZERO discomfort, and ZERO pain whatsoever. While there I was told I had several cavities, which I thought wa weird. I decided to have a few filled that same day. It went fine, and I left a happy customer. I came back a week later to fill the others by another dentist, also left fine until the next day. Soon after I began having terrible pain on the tooth that was worked on, and my gum was swelling badly. Another day went by and I could no longer eat on that side of my mouth with excruciating pain. I called to make an emergency appointment the next day. Coincidently later that day a giant piece of food came out of my gum. I explained this at my emergency appointment the next day....Never in my 40 years had I had any discomfort or issues. And the now 3rd dentist explained that while filling, the dentist had caused a "food pocket". Basically leaving a massive opening in my tooth. 100% caused by the dentist. With so much pain, and blood, the pain finally began going down, and the 3rd dentist did some work and explained it was "fixed". I left and about a week later I began feeling a lot of pain still, lots of sensitivity on that same tooth. Making me very upset because again, I had ZERO issues before ever coming to this place. I came in for yet a 4th unplanned appointment in about a week... which is very difficult and began causing issues with my work. I explained how bad the pain is, and the dentist explained I need a root canal. What!? She left the room, and the office manager came in to tell me this will cost thousands and thousands of dollars. I was in shock, and said I had no issues at all before now after all this work that ive had done, and all this pain im told I need a root canal? "I understand your concerns", she said... bla bla. I'm sure you do....its your job to pretend to care. I spoke to the dentist again, questioning this root canal I am told I needed. She gave me a packet of fluoride, and told me to rub in on my tooth for a few days and everything should be fine. Well that's a far cry from about a $5000 root canal job? Leading me to really start questioning if I in fact did have cavities that needed filling. The second I questioned something, I mysteriously didn't need the root canal any longer? I essentially was told to "walk it off". So I left, and was told it's prob still sensitive from the cavity filling, and that she, the dentist had a filling of her own that took weeks to feel better. Seemed odd. Waited a few weeks enduring the pain, and finally called in to explain how sensitive and painful my tooth still is. Which worried me because by now I have lost dental insurance, having changed jobs. Keep in mind: I HAD ZERO PAIN OR DISCOMFORT prior to coming here. I came in, and yet another dentist saw me (lost count how many I saw in a matter of a few weeks). She decided to drill out the old filling and start over. At this point I've so many needles stuck in my gums the last few weeks they've been bleeding due to the trauma. She numbed me up... and began drilling. Instantly insane pain!! She said I needed more numbing so she stuck me again... began drilling. Same thing! Nothing hurts more than a drill hitting a nerve that's not numb! She said she will give me more....and proceeded. By now I didn't feel numb at all.... She said I will just have to power through it, the numbing agent isn't working. What the heck?! As she continued drilling, tears were pouring out as I screamed in pain. What the hell is going on here? What kind of place is this! She finally stopped, filled the hole again and told me I shouldn't feel anymore pain. It's been months, and I could not be in anymore pain!!!! My tooth is terribly sensitive with cold air, hot air, liquids etc. To reiterate months ago I had ZERO PAIN whatsoever, now I am thousands of dollars in the hole with constant pain all day every day. I am currently searching for a new dentist who can take me in and help me, as I am completely desperate now. I feel like my tooth is rotting away, when I was completely healthy prior to seeing them. I 1000% question everything about this dental office. This place is a nightmare. Please be aware if thinking of coming here. I will also be filing a formal complaint with the state licensing board, and once I find a dentist who can help me will be filing a small claims case. read more

Generally, they do dental work at a standard level of service. My only complaint is that they add optional services that increase your out of pocket cost. For example, I had cleaning done and instead of just charging me for the cleaning they added laser disinfection in some coded abbreviated way. My bill decreased substantially when I had them remove it because insurance doesn't cover optional actions. Customer service lacks because No one speaks with you about the efficacy of the procedures or the necessity. They just charge with consult. Now that I think about it, it's unethical. I really liked their hygienist Mika she's awesome and very nice, however, Steve at billing decided to ruin my relationship with this place all together. He promised to call me back days ago about billing issue I had, and he never called back, so I had to go to the office to sort this billing issue out because I never in my life had receive a bill after paying whatever they tell me to pay before doing the work. He said that it was an insurance issue and not their fault. I called the insurance, and they said my share of the payment was higher that what they charged me and that's how you end up with a bill in your mail a year after the services were rendered. Steve could have called me back when I called, and I probably would still be a customer. However, he decided to be a terrible representative for the firm and made me an active detractor from their brand. By the way, if you go here more than once you will never see the same dentist, they will always schedule a different one every time you go, so you don't really feel you get to know any of them. Mika the hygienist is the best asset they have, everyone else is underwhelming at best. They chose to lose me as a long-term customer after I've been going there for a year for my dental issues because their billing practices are horrible, and they are of no help. At least Steve is of no help. Beware of billing because they really won't be, and they will dismiss you and be condescending and never call you back when you call them about billing. Avoid them because you will start nice, but they will get you eventually make you so upset that you will give up in a great hygienist just because she works in an office with terrible billing practices. From the Amazing Customer Service, Modern Equipment, and Very Skilled Doctors as well as Assistants! Stephanie went above and beyond to facilitate a fair and reasonable payment plan for me. Really appreciate her patience and her time put forth. Dulce was very friendly, funny, and made me feel comfortable throughout my whole experience at Modern Dental. Anna and Rebecca were also extremely helpful and seemed to truly love what they do. What these ladies do is remarkable! They help people day in and day out with with their dentistry needs but also advise you of preventive care and knowledge. My first visit to La Mesa Modern Dental Group was a checkup and cleaning. After 6 months, I came back, and they told me that I needed to have a crown put in. The dentist checked it over again and then gave me a quote for a crown for $1,200 or $1,400 for the more quality crown. I have insurance and this was the price with insurance. I understand that teeth are expensive, however I thought these prices seemed astronomically heigh, especially with insurance. I went home to check out my dental plan to see that I was paying for the highest priced plan and that a crown should cost me $150 with insurance at the MOST. I called La Mesa Modern Dental to ask about the charge and why they were trying to charge me for something that was ten times more expensive than what insurance would cover. The receptionist told me that it was something different and higher quality. I was upset that this office did not even offer me the option to go with a regular crown and tried to upcharge me without the option of a regular crown, something my insurance would cover at a tenth of the price. It is unethical and unprofessional that this office and its dentists would try to charge someone an egregious amount for something that would have been covered by insurance for a tenth of the price. I asked that the office send me my X-rays to show to another dentist and that its poor practice to offer their clients options that are ten times more expensive than what their insurance covers. I hope no one else spends this amount of money without checking out their options first. Go somewhere else! read more
