This place had some of the worst service I've ever had. They took forever to bring our drinks and food, then half of the food was wrong! I've lived in Germantown two years and have never seen a crowd here. Mexican food is delicious, so I took that as a sign that the food was not very good here. I tried it yesterday for the first time and ordered carry out chicken fajita platter. It smelled good and I was looking forward to my lunch. When I got home and sat down and took my first bite, I had to spit it out. The grilled chicken was crunchy, I could tell the chicken had not been thawed. What a disappointment. I tried a few more pieces but all of the chicken was like that. I called the restaurant and told the person who answered the phone to talk to their chef, and just received an "okay." I have eaten here many times and it seems to keep going downhill. Tonight I went with my children and there were 4 tables and one waitress. While the waitress seemed to be stressed and unorganized, she was not the problem. Fruit flies and bugs (I counted 5) swarmed our drinks. They seemed to be multiplying right in front of our eyes! I didn't finish all of my meal so I asked for a Togo box. I was told there was a 50 cent charge for a box. WHAT?? Who charges to take your left overs! The chips are good and the Margareta was better than average but that's where it stops. we arrived and it took a bit to get seated but 15 minutes later they finally got around to taking our orders. Our food took a very long time(about 25 minutes) and was cold, my wife's fajitas were not sizzling anymore and my food was luke warm at best. They dumped her food onto another hot skillet and tossed mine in the microwave, salad and all. I ate about half of it but shouldn't have eaten it at all as it came back up a couple hours later. I spoke with 2 different people about when karaoke starts on Thursday and was told 930pm. It started at 1040 and by 1115 they were playing dance music. The shrimp and rice is tasteless. The chicken fajita taco salad was alright. The drinks were terrible, weak. I was even brought the wrong drink. The service was SLOW! OK it was slower than slow. I've not too long moved from South Carolina went ooo this restaurant tonight. Walked in immediately was not a fan of the atmosphere. Old spot with a few older ppl sitting at the bar but none the less decided to sit because I was only there for a margarita and an enchilada ordered my margarita gave my Id to the bartender he scopes my ID and because it's old and worn bartender tells me is a fake. I politely took my Id back but not before pullin a copy of my battendet ID I had in my phone which had my birthdate on it which you have to get through to the police department in GA where i previously resided. Being new to the area recently, i tried this restaurant that showed up on GPS. The chips were ok, the salsa definitely felt like it was from a can or a bottle. No kick to it, just canned variety of tomatoes and onions. Thinking that this was the mild one, i ordered the spicy version of it. The spicy version was totally spicy ( Yes, I can handle a 3 pepper dish in Thai restaurants, so I can handle spicy very well and Sriracha goes on all my dishes If i have a choice) Being a vegetarian I asked the waitress whats the best entree on their menu for me. I was recommended a Chimichanga. So i ordered one with Jalapenos added. What came was a fried burrito stuffed with corn, peas!, potatoes and diced onions. No cheese or sauce on top of it. It was the blandest mexican food I have had so far. The margaritas ordered came out good on first one. The second order felt like the alcohol was missing or negligible. I wouldnt go there again, given there are other places i could try. It was Saturday night. There was a band playing that night, it was attracting 50+ crowd that night. The chips (paper thin, crispy, not greasy) and salsa (fresh made every day, the tomatoes chopped fine, no excess water, full of flavor) are worth the visit alone. I have been going to this place for years (ever since it was El Mexicano - located at the end of the commons). Everything I've tried is yummy. They're taco salad is to die for. I love their queso & chips. For the amount of money you pay you get a lot. I love that my work is a block away from the restaurant. The owner, Roy is super nice and accomodating. I have frequented this restaurant at both of their locations and have always had an awesome experience. Their drinks are absolutely unbeatable. They have excellent happy hour choices with quality brands of spirits. Their food is authentic. Their staff always welcoming, gracious and professional. My very favorite item on their menu is the Grilled Shrimp Limon. It is a very nice portion of shrimp at a great price and absolutely to die for. The signature sauce that comes with the shrimp is delicious and cannot be duplicated. I've tried. :)) My other favorites include: The pupusas which are some of the very best I've ever had. The salsa is delicious - spicy or mild - and their tortilla chips are authentic and always crisp and hot when served. The pork chop platter is unbeatable price-wise and the portion is overwhelming. These pork chops are absolutely mouthwatering and - along with the grilled shrimp limon - highly recommended by folks that frequent the restaurant. Lastly the guacamole is fresh and delicious too. I am really reluctant to give this place 1 star... Why? Because my friends and i frequent this establishment at least once a month. The food is consistently good, the staff recognizes us, and generally, we leave satisfied. However, 2 weeks ago we decided to head over on a Friday night and sit out on the patio (our normal routine). Walked in, right past the server working the patio, who was carrying a baby around... Yes, a baby. It was nice out and there were people enjoying the patio but there were plenty tables that were "open", so we took a seat to wait for our server. 10 minutes went by, so one of us went in to grab another server inside to ask if they were serving on the patio. She said yes and said someone would be right with us. Told her we didn't need menus, since she recognized us. Back outside we kept waiting, for another 10 minutes. The server (with the baby) working the patio came out and chatted with other patrons and as quickly as we saw her to let her know we were there, she was gone. So I went back inside and found the inside server to let her know that we were outside. Again I got the same "someone will be right there" but she appeared annoyed that I was asking her for a 2nd time for assistance. Again, we've been here many many many times before. Went back to my table and still no server. We waited 5 more minutes and left. As we were leaving, some patio patrons remarked "oh y'all are leaving?"... My response, "Yup, we've been waiting for almost 30 minutes to eat and no one came..." As we were leaving, the server (with the baby) came out from the restaurant with menus in tow (im *assuming* these were for our party of 4 since we were the only ones that hadn't been greeted, drink orders, etc.) and when she heard me remark that we were leaving, she let out a "ughhh.." and an eyeroll. I didn't really want to get into it with her that we had given her ample opportunities to come over to us and had requested numerous times to do so, to no avail. Like i said, we have frequented this place A LOT over the past 10 years, had numerous birthday celebrations here and we've never been blatantly ignored like this. We'll probably go back, because the food IS really good, but these 2 servers working that night, were awful. Salsa and chips tasted like I could get them at Giant. I ordered shrimp fajitas and while there were numerous shrimp (the only plus), they were bland and swimming in oil. The shrimp themselves were overcooked and tasted as if they came from a pack of 'previously cooked, tail-on' frozen shrimp and then just heated up. To add insult to injury, I also think they were freezer burned - they had that super white frayed look to them (either that or they were thawed by being put in water?) We ordered vegetarian enchiladas and chimichangas. There was hardly any flavor with the beans, rice, and sauces. It felt like no effort was put into making good Mexican food. i wish i could leave 0 stars, but not possible. terrible management & clientele. during COVID-19, me & my family were sitting outside at "their" empty tables. their in quotations because there was no signage showing that the tables belonged to la mexicana. we were asked to get up and leave their TOTALLY EMPTY outdoor tables mid meal.. with a child. completely empty set of 8-10 tables, and remained empty the entire time we were there. we stated if they could show us that the tables did in fact belong to la mexicana, we would gladly move. the server came back to tell us that him (being the manager) and the owner, being Ash? stated that they could not provide us signage and that they'd let us stay, "but next time we were on the property, the cops would be called." .... for what exactly? to add to the terrible experience, the clientele in this establishment would literally NOT stop staring at me and my family. we are a latino family, with the clientele predominantly white. i didn't want to throw race into the experience, mainly because i don't usually feel discriminated against, but it was fairly obvious in this situation. again - with a child present. shameful & extremely inconsiderate given the current situation with COVID-19, outdoors being the only place to eat, completely empty tables, and no signage expressing the tables "belonging" to la mexicana. read more

If Yelp would allow me, I wouldn't give this place a single star. We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday on our way back to DC from Sugarloaf Mtn. We asked to sit outside and were given menus and told that someone would be with us in a minute. We went out to the patio and settled in perusing the menu. We waited outside for over 15 minutes without seeing a single waiter or waitress, only an endless supply of smokers coming out from the bar. Finally, we got up and left. We went down the mall a ways and ate elsewhere. When walking back to our car we noticed that our menus were still on the table an hour after we had first sat down. This is my neighborhood "go-to" for Mexican Food. We go there at least a couple times a month and always enjoy the food. We also get to see many friends that are regulars there as well. When it came time to plan a rehearsal dinner for my daughter's wedding, I asked the owner if he could do it for me on a reasonable budget. He said he would take care of us and boy is he a man of his word!!!! I arrived a bit early to make sure everything was ready. He had a long set of tables all ready for us and a buffet that was amazing. He had all of our favorites and some other dishes and everything was delicious!!!!! NO ONE left hungry and it was the gift that kept on giving because my daughter took home the small amount of leftovers and enjoyed them later. I could never had done anything to this level on my budget anywhere else and enjoyed it that much. We have 20+ people and I would recommend this restaurant for anyone that has an office party or small party to plan. It's not a great restaurant. Food is "meh" . Salsa was good . Buffet looked like a bunch of stuff that had been kept around for days and reheated over and over again. Service is good. Drinks a little pricey. Bartender look like they had a rough night.. Clientele seems to be regulars and they wait on them more.. And sometimes bartenders disappear to go smoke. Outdoor patio has no cover, just a couple umbrellas so of it's really hot out, you can't sit out there. They need more umbrellas and better service out there. Bartender doesn't wait on you out there, you have to keep going inside to get drinks. But if just meeting friends, having some chips and salsa and beer... It's a cool place. Wow so disappointed in how we were treated ! We have been going there for two years. Every time with one bartender treats us like dogs!!!! Other people who go there who get drunk , get loud , stumble , and go everyday go with no one saying or doing anything to them. Yet we are quiet , have a few drinks , relax enjoy friends, and same bartender always finds an issue with us. We tip well and found how we get treated like dogs! Not sure why they let that happen . Oh and we were very cool when we saw a baby roach today. Never did we say anything or do anything to get treated like the bar tender did. DON'T GO THERE! Service date August 2, 2014 Tried to have a mid evening meal during a live band performance, around 9 pm. As you enter the restaurant, the bar is to your right and a few booths to the left. Past this area was the band and more booths and tables, with a sign stating $5.00 cover for the band. My party of three opted to sit at a booth in front of the sign. After our meals were ordered, the server took some time to inform us the kitchen didn't have any bread for the sandwich. So a second choice was made, and the food arrived without the second choice meal. That took a few more minutes. During our meal the server kept asking us if we were there to hear the band. Each time we answered the same - no. I did not see or hear the server asking the people who were standing in front of the $5.00 cover charge sign (who were blocking my way in and out of my booth seat) if they were there to see the band. Why ask a PAYING customer over and over again about the reason for the meal (come to hear the band??) and NOT ASK a NON PAYING customer (who is standing in front of the $5.00 cover charge sign) if they are there to see the band?? Also.........inside of the menus had not been cleaned........food (looked like salsa) was inside mine, a dead bug was inside the other. I'VE WARNED YOU...........DON'T GO THERE!!! read more

Me and boyfriend went last night mind you i just turned 21 on the 8th of this month. My boyfriend called before we went because I do not have my new id yet but I have my old one and the paper I received from the MVA. Are server tells us only 1 drink is on happy hour and all beers how only 1 drink when we called and they said food and drinks were but turned out only 1 drink and no food then sever takes our drink order and then comes back to check id as if she forgot she gives it back she then comes back with another server because the first server was confused and didnt understand the month so how are you a server if you can't read the date the second one confirms its okay but then say I don't know if we can take it. So they go ask the bartender or manager who ever she was I could hear her yell all the way from my seat which is in the dinning room from the bar yelling go get her id then yelling no we don't take this. My boyfriend was pisses that they asked 3 times for it and then you yell as if everyone needs to know I turned 21. I work in the Washington, D.C. area on the air in the radio & Television business and have many opportunities to dine in area restaurants but among the many restaurants in and around the area, La Mexicana is one of my top favorites. My favorite selections from the menu include the Grilled Shrimp limon with yucca sauce as well as the grilled chicken wings. as for the entree selections I prefer the Salmon and believe it or not they even have Pork Chops!!! the taste I have not been able to match in my home kitchen. one word for them, awesome!!!! the patio especially nice in good weather. I see many of the same people night after night there so it seems many of the neighborhood folks like to enjoy the same things I do about La Mexicana. Over the years I have been lucky enough to make many new contacts of the folks I have met while dining and relaxing there. The owners are very happy to honor special requests as well. read more
