I went here because my mom wanted to eat food from her home country of Ecuador. My mom was craving the tripe stew (guatita). My mom enjoyed it but said it could have been better. Something about boiling the tripe. My wife and I ordered the Kumbia Parrillada. Wow! The portions of meats was overwhelming. We enjoyed it. We had leftovers for 3 people. I'm not a big beef eater. But I'm sure if you like steak, you will definitely love this dish. But the star of the meal was the Marranitas. My wife and I greatly enjoyed this dish. My wife love to eat anything with corn. This appetizer was my favorite dish. It is a little pricey but it's probably average prices of most restaurants. If you enjoy Latin cuisine, I definitely recommend Kumbia. After 10pm, it turns into a dance club. They have live bands or DJs. I didn't stick around for the music. But I'm sure its like any Latin club atmosphere. read more

Went to this place a few weeks ago but did not have my phone so I almost forgot to leave a review. The inside was very appealing looked cool and our server was very kind. This place was okay. I came here with some friends but when we went, the ac was out and it took a minute to be served. The fans were okay but it was hard to be there for more than a ln hour. It is a big place and there wasn't a lot of people there. It was nice to not have it be too crowded. In terms of the food, my friends liked their dishes. I didn't love mine though. I got an octopus rice dish and it wasn't too good. The octopus was not cooked well and it didn't feel like the rice was flavored beyond a lot of cheese. I don't think I would come back here because the plaza does have better options, but it was fun to try once. read more

Great service by Milton, our bartender and server! We had a reservation for a big party and splitting checks was not an issue. I parked at the nearby garage C. The first two hours are free. We went here for a friend's birthday and we enjoyed ourselves. The service was good and the food and drinks were well priced. Their drink happy hour lasts until 9 PM which was a pleasant surprise. My only issue was the set up of the bathrooms- the doors were propped open and the set up included both a stall and a separate urinal, so you could walk in on someone using the bathroom. This is a great little place. It is tucked off to the side of other restaurants, by a First Watch. The front desk associate was pleasant and seated us immediately. While I was comfortable chatting at our table, a dining companion was cold and not super happy about the wait. The service wasn't super prompt. However, in my mind, they were respecting that are table wasn't full, as all of our party had not arrived. The food was amazing! We ordered Salteñas as an appetizer. They were fantastic! We planned to have dinner with some friends and wanted to try something new and outside of the typical places we go to. Kumbia offers a variety of South American dishes. Everything on the menu sounded so good, that it was had to decide. Kumbia is located in Rockville Town Center, so it's a great spot to have dinner/lunch and walk around and enjoy the area. During this time of year, the ice skating rink was open also. Parking garage is usually the easiest. Grab a ticket and its about $2. Some restaurants validate, however, Kumbia doesn't, but not an issue. The ambiance and set up was pretty cool and colorful. They have music playing and the bar area looked really nice. Our server was really nice, just would've been nice if someone checked in a bit more. We walked in around 4:30pm and it was pretty empty. It started to get busy around 6:30. They also have late night dancing, which my friend and I are interested in checking out one day. We ordered caipirinhas mango and lime. They were delicious. The lime was a bit strong, so I grabbed a passionfruit one after, which was perfect for me. The mojito was ok. It was lacking something, maybe more of the mint? We started with fried yuca, which was delicious along with thr dipping sauce. We ordered the empanadas, chicken and beef, which were both delicious, but I always prefer a beef empanada. We also had the fish patacones, which had small pieces of fried fish topped with a mango salsa, all on top of a fried smashed green plantain. It was so good!! We then had the cazuela de frejoles. It had beans with chicharon topped with plantains and avocado, with a side of rice. It was super flavorful and the plantains were perfect! Not many dessert options that day, so we opted out. Overall, I really loved Kumbia and would love to come back and try other items on the menu. Came in on a Thursday night around 10 PM expecting them to be closed but nope they are open until 2 AM . On their website the hours are until 9 PM. The DJ had Latin music playing and the bar was clean, very few people were present. Since it was kind of late I settled with Ceviche Tradicional Peruano & it sure did hit the spot with the citrus from the juice and paired well with the sweetness of the potatoes.. reasonable portion of ceviche. My friend and I came for happy hour, Mondays-Fridays 3:30-6 I believe. The inside decor is cutely decorated with florals and they have lots of screens to watch current games. We decided to sit at the bar and get some drinks! I really like that their happy hour offerings are really affordable around 6-7 with a lot of fruity options to add to your mojitos or Calpirinhas. I got the guava and the passion fruit and both were definitely on the sweeter side with the fruit juice! It really covers the taste of the alcohol. Celebrating the Colombian Independence My girlfriend and I walked in and waited patiently for a table, it took 20 minutes for someone to approach us. We decided to sit at the bar instead. We immediately felt the room temperature being hot, NO AC, only fans were blowing within the restaurant. Understanding that they were busy and shortstaffed. They had a live band and dancers performing. -We ordered marranitas for the appetizer 3 pieces in a order but we ate only 1 it was dry with no flavor - cazuela de frijoles - too salty - pandeja paisa - steak was dry, flavorless and tough, frijoles was salty, chicharron was hard and oily returned a 80% full plate I asked for the check and let the bartender know our that we were not satisfied with the dishes and why did he charge us a 20% late night fee? This was 2pm in the afternoon. I asked if anything can be done to the check? Nothing at all No discounts, no removal of any item and the included fee was still on the $89 check Paid and left. Chef Alejandro came over to visit our table. He asked how we liked our meal and what he could improve on? I have been to many new restaurants before, but a chef visiting your table and asking for your critique? That was very cool. So, in our quest for new restaurants, we visited Kumbia- a South American restaurant in Rockville Town Center. We started off our meal with beef and chicken empanadas. I liked the flaky crust and the hot, cheesy and meat filled empanadas. They were a great way to start off our meal. We also ordered Yucca, as an appetizer. The portion size on the yucca was on the smaller side, especially since we were sharing appetizers. The yucca itself was crisp and nicely fried. Both appetizers came with a dipping sauce that reminded me of Russian dressing. I thought it was tasty. Next, we ordered a ceviche. I was not a fan of this dish. The fish was tough and in some places hard to cut with a fork and knife. It was a milk based ceviche and the sauce lacked in flavor and taste. It needed more acidity, salt, and spice. Yes, I said spice. Lol. : ) I loved our main dish! It was the grilled South American steak. It was served with 2 sides. We chose the grilled veggies and plantains. The steak was the perfect medium rare. It had that grilled, juicy flavor, seasoned superbly, and melted in your mouth. It was a nice size portion. The veggies consisted of peppers, onions, and mushrooms. They were tender, but not overdone. They were really delicious. The plantains were sweet, soft, and flavorful. Then, for dessert, we ordered the mil hojas or napoleon. It was sublime! Tender layers of flaky pastry, scrumptious creamy layers, frosted top, and set on a bed of raspberry jam sauce. This was fabulous! I loved it. Our service was top notch and our waiter was so sweet and personable. At the time we were dining, they were setting up for a party. The people creating the balloon sculpture were very loud and noisy. I would recommend doing this in the back, because it was very distracting for those of us trying to enjoy our meal. Kumbia is new and open for business. They offer a wide variety of South American- Latin meals including chicken, steak, or seafood. First time diner, I had the bandeja paisa the steak was very well marinated and tender, the whole meal was very tasty, I also had the coconut mojito and it was delicious as well. A few months ago, I met one of the managing partners of the restaurant and he told me about this new spot in Rockville, MD. He gave me his business card and invited me out. Yesterday was my first time visiting the restaurant and my first impression was Oohs and Aahs! My date was just as impressed with the modern colorful décor. We were greeted by the host and seated immediately. The background music's volume levels were perfect. Me and my date didn't have to compete with the sound by yelling just to speak to each other. We had a chance to review the menu. The bar was on one side of the restaurant and dining was on the other. The floors were polished cemented floors. Sure to turn into a dance floor... I just know it! Hehehehe The waiter greeted us and gave us an overview of the drinks and the menu. Since it was still "Happy Hour" my date ordered the Caipirinha. I thought since the menu had a drink that was named after the restaurant, 'why not?' I ordered the Kumbiarita (Similar to a Margarita-I think). It was delicious! For our appetizer, we ordered the CEVICHE CARRETILLERO- "Combination of thin sliced fish and breaded fried calamari, marinated in leche de tigre and aji amarillo. Served with cancha, choclo and red onions." QUE RICO!!! For the main dish we decided to settle on the BANDEJA PAISA- "Traditional Colombian sample platter, served with marinated pork belly, grilled flank and sausage. Accompanied with white rice, pinto beans, sweet plantains, avocado, artisanal arepa and egg." We were glad that we shared it because the portion was PLENTY! Excellent location loved the atmosphere of this little center especially summer time, the outdoor seating is too adorable! We went for a friends grad party about 8 girls and we enjoyed all the food and drinks! I ordered the fritada that came with a bit of everything; the carnitas fell apart perfectly with my fork cooked to perfection. The parcera drink was gorgeous as you can see so hard to drink it due to the presentation but it was delicious and refreshing. Our server did her thing from bringing food to attending bottle service at other tables once the night arrived. My cousin was in from out of town and she wanted to go dancing. My friends told me this place was decent. We went on a Saturday night around 9ish, before the dancing started. We asked for a table for 3 and the hostess said "there's none available but you can stand at the bar". We went to the bar and nobody helped us so we went back and asked to be put on a waiting list for a table and she said "we don't have any available, and no I cannot add you to a waiting list because more people will come after that". Her response was weird because I have never been denied the waiting list for a table. We then asked her for the wifi and she had no idea what we were talking about and when we showed her she said "yes, that one" but she also did not know the password and rolled her eyes at us. We ended up with a small table by the bar after a couple left it to us and we ordered food and drinks. Our waitress took a long time which was understandable because it was busy.. so we started ordering drinks from the bar because it was faster. She got upset and said if we wanted to keep our table we had to order from her.... which we did but one hour later and our drinks never arrived so my husband had to go looking for her to close our tab. The service was okay The music was good The food was okay too, my ceviche definitely tasted like it had been frozen, though the empanadas were delicious. I'm not sure I would come back to this place. First the good: Although I only ordered the lomo saltado it was delicious and it was obvious that they pay attention to authenticity and details in general for their food. The flavors were excellent, and it was a good size dish. The meat was a bit over cooked but that was my fault for not specifying the desired temperature. Most Latin restaurants will automatically cook your steak well done because that is how many of us Latinos are used to eating it all of our lives. None the less everything about the dish was delicious. The service is great, the bartenders are very friendly and nice and the atmosphere is really nice. I definitely want to come back to try other dishes. Now the bad: I was so excited to see that they make caipirinhas here, which is a Brazilian drink with cachaca. All that is in it is cachaca, sugar and a muddled lime. Sadly they took the lazy route here and added sour mix, which any Latin restaurant should be ashamed of if they are trying to be authentic. A caipirinha with sour mix kills the taste of the cachaca. I asked if the mojitos were made the same and they said yes, which means that a mojito will taste like a margarita with rum. I expect that in other places but not here. The bartender was kind enough to make me a traditional mojito although he seemed a bit taken back by the request at first. However, he did make it perfectly minus the sugar, they use simple syrup which is no big deal. Other than that this place was great and i definitely want to come back again. Until they get their drinks up to speed, in particular these two signature Latin drinks I simply cannot give a Latin spot more than three stars. But definitely worth checking out and the dance seem at night seemed to be pretty fun if you're looking for a spot to hang out. read more

Glad I got to try this place recently! I popped in on a Saturday evening before catching a movie in Rockville and my partner and I ordered a couple drinks and some appetizers. The menu seems like a mix of mainly Peruvian dishes with a few other South American staples sprinkled in. The drinks we got were so so good, and the appetizers were delicious as well. We decided to order some entrees to go to eat the next day, and I was blown away by the huge portions we got for the prices. I chose the Peruvian rice with beef and my partner got the salmon risotto. Both dishes were pretty good, and the piece of salmon in the risotto dish was massive. The place wasn't crowded when we went and our server was so nice - after bringing our drinks, she asked us if we wanted to take our time with the appetizers before ordering anything else, which isn't something restaurants usually even ask. To be fair, we dined on a Monday and it was really cold out, but no one was in this restaurant when we walked in (or after) and we should have taken the hint! It was really loud in the place and the server put us near the fireplace in a corner. On one wall across of us was two screens for sports and one showing a band. The music overhead was not what was on the tv, that was odd, but okay, we had to watch something why waiting for server to come over. Order a lovely caipirinha cocktail and had not had that kind of drink before and my husband ordered a beer. Server explained menu very well and we ordered the chicharon as an appetizer. The arepa served with it was good tasting but the chicharon was a half inch slab of warmed fat and chewy dried flavorless meat. The lomo saltado drew my eye right away and I ordered that for dinner with the fries on the side. Husband ordered picanha, (in house cut Brazilian steak). We ordered two shots to celebrate. Meals arrived and oh gee... they are bragging about cutting this meat in house? Stop, please! (To preface, both husband and I have over 40 years in restaurant industry and this includes employment as chef in steakhouse.) The quality of this meat is typical average grocery choice quality and cut absolutely wrong! Clearly not against the grain and thus rendering this meat a tough chewy mess. The menu mentions, 'steak' and we should have asked what kind for $26. My lomo tasted okay but the same chef prepared this meat too. Jaw muscles got a work-out! As other reviewer mentioned, fries were great and beans had lots of good flavor. What bugs us most is what happens next... Server finally checks in on us about half way through our meal, I order a mango margarita and husband orders another beer. I did not order this margarita by the silly name they call it on the menu, but he double-checked I said margarita and to be mango flavored. About ten minutes later, server comes over grinning ear to ear toting with two hands this behemoth glass full of orange liquid. What the hell? We had already had two drinks a piece and well into our meals, husband had ordered his own beer and so now you really think I wanted this 64+ ounce huge ass drink all by myself? Server blinked in confusion and frankly we just wanted out of there. The drink was just yuck, straight-up cheap bar mix and bottom-shelf quality liquor, what mango? Since all drink mixes are the same price for a flavor or no flavor, how lovely we were charged an extra $5 for the flavor. Server proud to mention this swimming pool-sized beverage was 4 glasses worth! Yay.. $40 drink added because you wanted to pad your ticket. Well guess what, I'm here writing a review of feeling scammed instead of writing about the great time we had at Kumbia. Thinking we are coming back? I see another 'for rent' sign on the way in the town square. Oh by the way, there is ONLY one bathroom for men and women.
