For instance, I ordered a scoop of guava sherbet that tasted like frozen confectioners sugar. Also ordered a scoop of pineapple coconut, which tasted exactly like it should (fruit). This is one of those times where I look at the reviews, and I look at my experience, and I say - "did we go to the same place?". This was the worse ice cream I have ever had, along with the worst service I have ever had. They have many unusual flavors (which is cool), so naturally you want to try them before purchasing. So fressssssh! I can't believe there's a gem like this here! All their ice cream is made fresh and with natural ingredients. And if ice cream isn't your thing, they also have homemade fruit bars and aqua fresca! There are a ton of flavors to choose from. They even have tequila (for the brave ones!). Very cute shop deep in Sonoma, parking is across the street. I had a sample of the ice cream which was very rich and creamy but I wanted to try the paletas/popsicles so I got a guava one. It was very sweet and fresh with real chunks of guava, I'm used to the ones you get at be grocery store (artificial flavors) so I was surprised that the guava had hard seeds in it (not for the faint of dentures) so be careful if you order that one. My friend had the mangonada which she liked a lot too they have them ready to go frozen in their little reach in freezer and just blend it a little and serve with tajin and lime juice and tamarind straw. If I went back I would go for the ice cream only. Minus 2 stars for the nachos behind the counter the chips looked old and crushed in its case, and there were flies everywhere by the windows and tables. read more

Always the best ice creams with so many flavors to try and has more than just ice cream

Le Michoacana has the motto "La Indita" (The Little Indian), and they go for native flavors. If you think Baskin Robbins' 31 flavors are intimidating, they have NOTHING on La Michoacana. While they have seasonal flavors like sweet corn (less expensive than the Healdsburg SHED version), they have an amazing assortment. They have horchata, mango chamoy (apparently chamoy is related to Japanese umeboshi- pickled plum), paletas. On a sweltering day, they have plenty of cool, hydrating flavors. The colorful paint job in Boyes Hot Springs keeps you from missing it. It has VERY limited parking out front (3 spots), but there's abundant public parking across the street, especially on weekdays. I went for 2 scoops for $4.50 (a deal) The tequila, made with Jose Cuervo, is excellent. One wonders how a mescal flavor would turn out. They have a seasonal flavor, rose petal, that is downright luxurious. The ice cream is substantial&creamy. It gave me the necessary sugar rush to get to Santa Rosa. Between fancy places like Healdsburg's Noble Folk&more run of the mill like Ben&Jerry's, La Michoacana is the best. Delicious, refreshing, literally very cool on a hot day. read more

When we stopped here we were the only Anglo-Americans but we didn't feel unwelcome at all. I only felt a little awkward because there is no "menu" although the cone and cup sizes are displayed with prices. The woman behind the counter happily offered me sample tastes. As you come inside the case to your immediate right has what looks like beverages with ice cubes in them... I suspect that is not what it is and I regret not having asked since one of the flavors was tamarind (a favorite of mine). There was a man having something that looked really good to me, but I had no idea what it was and I had to ask him. It was some sort of milk or coconut milk drink filled with fruits and possibly squares of gelatins. I asked him what it was. I didn't have anything to write it down with so it oozed clean out of my brain. The variety of frozen treats (in addition to sorbet and ice creams) boggled my mind! The Sour-Sop (guanabana) sorbet was my favorite. My Prince had a scoop of the Mexican Neapolitan and asked the woman behind the counter what her favorite was. Wow!!! I have never been to a Paleteria (not even sure you can call it that) before. Most Mexican popsicles are served from a push cart with a bell and have very limited flavors. NOT HERE!!! They have at least 10 different Paleta (mexican popsicle) flavors. They Range from Basic Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry to Pineapple and Spice. If you are an ice cream person they have fresh homemade ice cream too. The Strawberries n Creme flavor is my favorite with fresh chunks of strawberry through out. For my birthday, we stayed at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn which is in walking distance to this gem of an ice cream store. This is the kind of place I wish was closer to home and at the same time am grateful it is not or my tush would be covered in more dimples than it already has! All the ice cream is made in house along with several flavors of agua fresca and horchata (which Toni would love). The woman who helped us was so humble and helpful allowing each of us to try as many flavors as we wanted to. Kevin ended up with a scoop of strawberry sorbet which was hands down the best either of us has tried. It tasted like a biting into a smooth strawberry. I had a scoop of the espresso with almonds and it was like having shot of espresso with an almond chaser and I loved every succulent second of eating it. Needing a ice cream fix, we decided to head to the new kid in own and try the "Mexican" ice cream. After a little confusion about the flavors, a nice young girl walked us though all of them. And there were A LOT. We decided on the pineapple coconut and peach. After the first lick, our eyeballs popped out of our heads. I looooooooooove this place. I will not go anywhere else in Sonoma for ice cream at this point. It's handmade. The flavors are anything but boring - chongos, pistachio, blueberry, strawberry, cookies and cream, cheesecake, cherry, and the list goes on. They also have sorbet and handmade fruit bars, homemade juices. Possibly best of all is the "Bionicos" (sp?) which is a huge cup filled with fresh cut mango, pear, banana and strawberry and then surrounded by sweet cream, topped with granola and raisins. $5 bucks! This place is a great value. The only reason for no fourth star is that the service can be particularly slow. Michocana is ALWAYS busy so they should hire some people! open 10-10 everyday. read more
