We ordered food to go for dinner. The chicken enchiladas were excellent and there were four! The lettuce, tomatoes, rice and beans were packaged separately. The meal was so good that we decided to return for breakfast the next day. The staff was very nice and the restaurant was very clean. I ordered the veggie skillet with scrambled eggs and raisin toast. Everything was so good! The potatoes were not hash browns but rather big chunks of potatoes! So filling and priced right. It's been awhile since I have been back, but I won't wait long next time! I ordered their meal called the Hurricane for take out last night. It's a combo of Steak, Shrimp, Chicken and Chorizo served on melted white cheese. It comes with beans, rice & salad/cheese/pico de galo. Best mexican food in town! I was there earlier this week and the food was outstanding. Service was wonderful and the chef was very friendly and came out to see if we liked the food. They have chips and salsa for free and spicy salsa if you ask for it. I had their tostadas de salpicon. They were superb! Very fresh and delicious. My boyfriend had their carne asada tacos which were some of the best tacos he ever had. The meat was well seasoned and perfectly grilled. Great new place! Stopped in for a quick to go lunch, and the service was very friendly, happy to offer suggestions for their favorite dishes. On their recommendation, I ordered the al pastor torta, and it was delicious! And HUGE (took up the entire length of a standard to go box)! The bread was toasted buttery goodness, and the pork had a beautiful pineapple flavor and was perfectly cooked. The lettuce was fresh and crispy, and the fries were tasty. This is one of the very best Mexican restaurants in CU. I have two favorites and this is one so we alternate between the two frequently. Everything I've had here is full of flavor (not always found in any Midwestern Mexican places.) I like that they have a decent amount of seafood options which is my favorite. We get carry out right now, due to Covid, so I can't attest to the dining experience inside the restaurant. The staff has been friendly on pick up, though. They always add the extra hot sauces in the bag. My family loves spicy food, and we fight over the little containers of sauce! They're that good. I highly recommend La Mixteca. I look forward to eating in sometime and having margarita with the delicious meal. read more

It's just a little place in a little strip mall. We found it purely by accident. We 1st had a Margarita and it was very good. We then ask for some chips and salsa and cheese dip. The tortilla chips were hand made, fresh and hot. We then ordered Fajita quesadillas. Oh my!!! They give you nice portions for your money and they are also fresh, hot and delicious. Oh my my...LA Mixteca gives the "big dawgs" in town a run for their money! My wife and I stopped in for lunch and we were NOT dissapointed. I got the shrimp burrito. It was big...took up the whole plate. It was filled with goodness. The spices were perfect and though I'm not a huge fan of cheese sauce on my burrito this stuff was the bomb. And the shrimp...cooked to perfection and I kid you not...a shrimp in EVERY bite. Not baby shrimp either...medium sized shrimp. I've got to mention the chips and salsa. The chips were fresh, warm, and homemade. The salsa was also very fresh and tasty. I can't wait to go back. Mauricio came out to say hi and see how everything was. Actually, he went to each table. I wanted to like this restaurant, but was a bit disappointed by my meal. I orders the alambres (which I am always a huge fan of) but I was a bit underwhelmed by this version. It was more of a fajitas dish and the meat was large and chewy, and it didn't really have the traditional flavor. Delicious pastor. The meat is crispier than Maize's. They also include pineapple in their pastor tacos. Chorizo was about on par with Maize.

Great little mexican restaurant. Might be my new go-to taco joint locally. Excellent, house-made chips and really nice salsa. Our server offered us the spicy salsa, and brought out two little cups, one orange-ish in color, one green. I'm not into verde but my companion said it was good, and I can vouch for the orange stuff. Great with chips and on my tacos. Will def ask for the spicy salsa next visit, you should too. I had two carne asada tacos, companion had pastor (I think?) and chicken. She said the chicken was excellent, and it looked it. My carne asada tacos were also excellent, and def not skimping on the beef. If I had to make a criticism it would be that the single tortilla isn't doing it, probably ought to double up - it came apart as I ate it. A minor quibble. Otherwise, really great food. It wasn't real busy, but service was super attentive and friendly. I might deduct a half star for ambience - it's a pretty stark, florescent lit space. My husband and I got takeout from La Mixteca last night (carry out only due to COVID-19). It was really easy to place an order by phone and the gentleman was very helpful. Our feels were ready quickly and they were delicious. It was so hard to choose what to get since everything sounds delicious. We got seafood molcajete, classic esquite, and the burrito el gordo. The molcajete was very spicy but welcome - large portion of various seafood. His burrito was awesome and the corn was simply delectable. We will definitely be back again to try more! read more

This place has gone down hill since opening. Today, I decided to give them another try. I was highly disappointed. I found a chunk of hair in my nachos. The salsa I purchased tasted very bad, as if it had been expired. I tried calling to convey my experience. I support small business, so I was simply wanting to make recommendations to the owner. This is the best Mexican food in Urbana-Champaign! It is the only restaurant in Urbana we come back to again and again. We love everything we have tried on the menu, especially the enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, fish tacos, and the soups of the day (always big, hearty, delicious, and spicy).
