The corn in the cup is amazing! I have been eating it for years now and they never fail!

Checked out this pretty small Mexican restaurant in Crestwood. El Gallo Tapatio is one of those…read moreplaces you expect to be some bare bones family owned place, and yes it actually is. It has a pretty simple menu of a few items or so. At least it makes it easier to choose anything. The prices are okay and the food is better than it looks. Bad thing is there's no alcohol. It's not a place for margaritas, but rather Jarritos. That's why they have to make good on the food, so you can at least get something. For meat eaters the menu is mostly for them with things like beef and chicken. There's also crazier things like tongue. It's about $8 for guacamole. Pretty much the only vegetarian thing on the menu it seems. Had a chunkiness with a light spiciness to it. The tortilla chips were crispy and simple without being burnt like at many places. For sure it's one of the many places to get Mexican food. It's located on Cicero Avenue at 137th Street. They're open until late at night so you can go when getting the munchies or something.

Decent food at a decent price. Got the Al carbon tacos. Didn't really taste like they were grilled…read moreand they could have used some seasoning. It wasn't bad but I've definitely had better tacos. The rice and chips and salsa were pretty good though.

The salsa has a lot of onions. The flavor is great! And the chips are made in house freshly fried. We also ordered bottled Coke (sugar not HFCS) and water. There are 6 tables in the front area of the restaurant and a high top bar area. Once we get our dinners I'll update this post.

The place has a welcoming, casual atmosphere. There is choice of seating: booth, table, or bar side. It's clean and well attended. The wait staff was nice. The chef even came to clarify some things on my order (how I wanted my egg) and checked on me afterwards with future suggestions. I'll be back. I seated myself in a booth. Fresh made chips and salsa choices were brought to the table with napkins and utensils. Rhodes chips were just right. They were made from good tortillas, crisp fried in clean oil. I could have just had that for breakfast. I needed proteins, so I chose the Chilaquiles con Huevo in green salsa. I was told the red was not spicy but can be adjusted to my liking. My eggs (2) were over easy (well executed), served over cheesy corn fried tortilla strips with sour cream, tomatoes, refried beans, rice and guacamole. I make it through half the dish. The rest was taken home and eaten the next day. Just as tasty. I have more s dishes to try and a Summer month to do it.
