Went on a busier day of the week, which we expected the service to be a little slower than usual. But we didn't expect to have to wait the amount of time we did for everything. This restaurant has always been a favorite of ours, but our opinions have changed after our experience today with our server. Went here for the first time in awhile order fajitas $13 meal with chicken when it comes out I have less then 1/2 a chicken breast that was dry and over cooked nearly zero vegetables complete joke. The server or so called Manager had enough attitude when I asked if this was serious $13 meal she "stated she's not responsible for portion size" then never checked on us again for the rest of our meal till it was time to pay. I worked late the other night, and thought I would stop and grab something before I got home....Horrible idea. The service was so slow I couldn't imagine that more people were not getting up and leaving. It looked like many were like me, just wondering why they were even here. Our area has several Mexican food restaurants everyone of them are different and unique in their own way. Some are better than others. La Paloma has a great menu, a kids menu and a senior menu as well. Friday and Saturdays can be very busy and it is a small restaurant. One draw back, the service can be slow occasionally as if you might have been forgotten. But service is always friendly. Also you are greeted with a friendly smile, most of the time. First let me say that there was a time when, in my opinion, there wasn't a better Mexican food restaurant in the state. The red sauce here is amazing. Back in the mid-90s when Rachel Pena was cooking in the kitchen and Anna was serving tables this place was rockin. It's been through a couple of ownership changes since then. Rachel and Anna are long gone. Though the recipes are supposed to be the same the food doesn't seem quite as good. The red sauce is still amazing though. We make a point to visit this place during every trip to Safford. The shredded beef enchies are great with the 3 chimi combo (beef) coming in second. I would definitely choose green chili over red at this establishment. I was a bit disappointed that I had to add salt to my plate on my most recent visit though. The salsa is also very good. This is the first place that I ever had fried ice cream, and it is amazing. I think I'll try some next time I'm in town as I haven't had any in years. I hope it's still amazing. Come to think of it, this is the first place where I ventured away from the standard bean burrito. La Paloma holds a special place in my heart as I developed my love of Mexican food eating here. Having grown up in the South, to me Mexican food was Taco Bell until my later teen years when I moved to the Southwest. I guess it's like a first love. You never really forget. They definitely had some rough times but seem to have pulled it together now. You aren't going to find over-the-top friendly service here though so let's get that expectation in line right now. be careful if you use your debit or credit card they have managed to charge my card three times for the same transaction had dinner there last Friday night my bill was $85 I have now been charged $85 to my bank three times. We were visiting my mother in law last year and discovered La Paloma. The staff is friendly and efficient. The menu has a wide variety of choices and everybody in our party was able to find something tasty. From my point of view what really makes La Paloma a stand out is their Green Chile Green Sauce. It is a proper Rio Grande Valley green sauce and they serve it on proper chicken enchiladas that I remember eating while growing up in New Mexico. The positive reviews of La Paloma are accurate and well deserved. This year while visiting the Thatcher AZ area, I ate lunch at La Paloma four of the five days we were there and every meal was well served and tasted great. If you want a real treat, order the 2 Chile Relllenos plate swimming in green chile sauce which is my personal favorite! read more

There's only 2 outstanding mexican restaurant in the area and this is definitely one of them. The valley has plenty of other 'good' choices but sometimes your soul needs the best of the best. This restaurant had somewhat good food, however the service was terrible. We got put in the dark back room and we're forgotten about. Our order took way too long to come out, our drinks were never refilled, and our server checked on us twice the whole time we were there. We had to ask for a refill of chips and salsa multiple times and it was done grudgingly and with a sigh of disgust. At the end our party felt taken advantage of and robbed of time and money. This is still one of the best restaurants in Safford. I previously gave it 5 stars but I'm downgrading it to 3. The last few times I've been in for dinner the food has been mediocre and service has been slow. I ordered the pinned tacos the last time and they were soggy and dripping wet. The Gila Valley has a well-deserved reputation for excellent Mexican food. La Paloma contributes to the reputation. What sets them apart is their large menu containing items not found elsewhere in the valley. One of my favorites is the tortas, which is basically a big sandwich which includes spiced shredded beef, melted cheese, sauteed onions, green chile, avacado, and a special mayo sauce. In addition to the standard smooth and chunky salsas, they offer a salsa verde. The verde is mild but has a lot of flavor. The downside here is that during busy times the staff has trouble keeping up, and the parking isn't great. The parking lot is dirt, so don't wear nice clothes when it's raining. read more
