Ok, I made it back here and they're doing a much better than in the past. The food quality is back to where it used to be. Service is always good. Not particularly cheap, but they do have a nicer atmosphere and plate presentation than most. If you're on this side of town, it's a good option. Food made my stomach hurt. It looked and tasted disgusting. The only good thing was guacamole. The salsa had a pizza sauce like consistency and it was not worth the money. Portions on my fiancées carnitas was a bit ridiculous and I really didn't like how those refied beans looked like blended sweet potatoes. Lacked flavour and spice, not my jam. Servers were nice although we only saw OUR server like twice the whole time we were there had to have other servers come and refill our drinks and chips. I have always loved this place and have had nothing but nice things to say about them until now. My last visit on April 11th changed everything unfortunately. Our waiter looked dead on his feet when he arrived. He asked how we were doing and I said fine thanks, and how are you? He replied not so good. In fact he said he was sick as a dog and could barely stand. I kid you not! I told him I didn't want him to be our waiter if he was sick and he replied jokingly that it was okay, "it wasn't Covid" and he was wearing a mask, which he demonstrated by pulling it away from his face. I thanked him and said no dice, I wanted another waiter which irritated him something fierce. If you are so sick you can barely stand the last thing you need to be doing is handling people's food and running the risk of getting everybody you come into contact with sick, including other waiters, hostesses, and the cooks. So now you risk taking down pretty much anybody who eats in the restaurant for the next few weeks while the flu just keeps getting passed back and forth. There is no way the manager didn't know that this guy was sick. Not when he looked like he did and had no problem telling a customer he was barely able to stand. That they let him continue to serve is totally irresponsible and unacceptable. And to answer the question; Yes, I did come down with the damn flu two days after eating here. read more

Went here the other night, and it was so disappointing. Ordered the steak fajita for 2 and it was about 90% peppers and onions, 10% meat. The peppers and onions were so over powering, it was not enjoyable. The Choriqueso was basically milk with chorizo in it. Been here twice and ive been disappointed each time. The quality of food for the price you pay is really really bad. Rice and beans are definitely bland. It comes in a bowl shaped scoop and there's not even any seasoning on it. Even the specials are 15$ and up and the portions are very small. That's not acceptable when the quality of the food is that subpar. Kids meals are 8.50$ and don't even include the drink and that's for Mac and cheese, chicken fingers, one taco, etc. The chicken fingers one of my sons got was the quality of McDonald's chicken nuggets. It's tough to rate Mexican restaurants due to the sheer quantity of them across the United States. A good rule of thumb is to look at chip and salsa quality and then obviously overall taste and value of your meal. You can make this even easier on yourself if you have a go-to order that you can compare across all restaurants. Now that we've gotten a quick lesson in, I will say that I found La Paloma to be sub-par up next to competing Mexican joints. The menu, overall, seemed a little bit overpriced but the lunch specials were fair. The chips and salsa were kind of what you would expect but nothing extraordinary. I don't eat meat, but do eat fish and was hoping to substitute out some meat tacos with fish but apparently this isn't possible at La Paloma and I had to change my order. I ordered a combo with chile relleno and a veggie enchilada. The food was drenched in sauce and the chile was fried, which may be the traditional way to make this dish (and that's okay) but I simply wasn't expecting it based upon the description. On a Friday night everyone should expect to wait for a table at a restaurant. My husband put our name in and specifically asked for a table ( I do not like booths ). We know with a specific request we would probably have a longer wait. Within 10 min our buzzer went off - our table was ready. Awesome ... check in to hostess they take us to a booth. I remind the host we requested a table ... he was not happy about accommodating us. We were asked to wait ( which we totally understood) meanwhile another hostess try's to push the booth on me again. I said no we would like a table. The original host returns and tells the hostess there was a table. They take us to the farthest corner of the restaurant in a back room and sit us at a table. No menus. Waiter comes asks for the drink order. I requested a menu as I wanted to order a cocktail. Took forever for him to return with two menus. One menu had some substance all over it ...gross ! When I told the waiter when he finally returned he said he would get me a new one but left the gross one ! Never brought a 2nd menu. Fast forward to the food .... AMAZING !!!!! I had a pasta dish and my husband had fajitas. His fajitas had enough meats for 3 people ...shrimp, chicken, steak. I also had a glass of fabulous sangria. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Service definitely got better as the meal went but definitely started off rocky. We will definitely be back ... the food saved a customer... please work on your customer service. read more

Since moving from California I have been hoping to find a good "Mexican" restaurant. Until now everything has been just passable. When my wife suggested this place I was not excited, which began to change with the homemade chips and salsa. We both chose combinations that came with rice and beans (not all do.) The beans were tasty, the rice fluffy, and their "red sauce" perfect. Between us we had a taco, tamale, enchilada, and chile relleno. All were homemade, spicy, and the perfect temperature. I am always pleased when my low expectations are blown out of the water. Based on our server's recommendation, we can't wait to try the tacos al pastor next time. Have had two bad experiences in a row here. The hostess was very rude and threw our menus on the table and our card after paying. She didn't say a word. Would expect better service when paying exceptionally more compared to other Mexican restaurants in the community. Food was okay, very small portions that are not worth the price. Waiter was nice. Visited the family in Springfield and had a visit to La Paloma. Didn't expect to hit the jackpot in the south but after a tough transition to the Midwest his place reminded me of home in a big way. We sampled tacos, enchiladas, fajitas and a carnitas plate and everything was what a Californian would hope for in a Mexican eatery. Not your typical Springfield Mexican restaurant. La Paloma is on another level. Their dishes are have refreshing twist. I always go with the top self margarita. Their chips are nice and not over salted. The salsa is just ok. I ordered the spinach chicken enchiladas. Which was amazing. The sauce that the enchiladas is served in is beyond delicious. The husband order "The Michelle" which is steak, chicken and shrimp, fajita style with peppers and onions over a bed of rice. They also put a chipotle sauce over the dish. Good food, tends to lean towards a more traditional bland version of Mexican food, that is to say it does not have a spicy or Tex-mex flavor. Price range is $12 per person not including drink or tip. Salsa is more of a tomato paste variety and very traditional also. I ordered the chimichanga and was pleased with the flavor. However, for the price point and flavor I lean more towards a "Los Cabos" or "El Puente." Presentation on the plate is the biggest win here. So, perhaps a good option for a date, but not for some budget friendly and good Mexican food. read more

I don't know why anybody would believe this is good Mexican good. And why would anybody spend $15 on 1 margarita. The salsa was bland and had no flavor. My Burrito had no flavor as well and was overloaded with rice. I asked for extra sour cream and the didn't give me any when served. La Paloma is, in many ways, an amalgamation of the things that make other restaurants in the 417 great. Start with the massive portions available at Old Mexico, add in a touch of Frida's artistic flare then top things off with an elevated ambiance that wouldn't be out of place downtown and you'll wind up with something like this Sunshine St. paean to all things Mexican. My lady and I sampled the Michelle Special and the vegetarian quesadilla on our visit, both of which came well-presented on heaping plates. Flavors were interesting and nuanced, our meals were filling and the ingredients were some of the freshest we've seen. While we ate, we enjoyed the hand-drawn art adorning some of the windows, as well as the party lighting that zig-zags across the ceiling of the dining area. With all that positivity, you might expect this to be a five-star review, but slow service detracted from what might otherwise have been a flawless experience. Although we received our food in a timely manner, getting the check and paying took far longer than it should have given the near-empty state of the restaurant. That said, the rest of the experience was so good, we'll almost certainly be back - meaning La Paloma may get a chance to earn that fifth star after all. read more

I will be back! You had me at Fresh Table-side Guacamole! I do wish their chips were a little thinner, but they were still good and able to handle both salsa and guacamole. The rest of our meal had great flavor and just the right size for lunch. My hubby had the Taco Salad with Beef and he said it tasted delicious. When it first came out, he was a little hesitant as he didn't see the meat, but it was on the bottom. As for mine, great flavor. However, the Chile itself was a little tough and over-cheesy. I will try this dish again, though, as it was probably just that pepper. The atmosphere was nice and not noisy so it was good for conversation. The restaurant was clean and that is a huge plus for me. Our Waiter was very pleasant and helpful. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who asks. Menu is a little different than a typical Mexican restaurant on Springfield, seems a little more upscale but there are some combo specials on the back of the menu in case you prefer the basics. I had the shrimp and potatoes enchiladas. Was a very tasty dish with the frilled vegetables, shrimp and spicy cheese sauce, but tasted little too thick with the potatoes as the enchilada filling. I really just did not like the food here. I found the spices to be really gross. We ordered the fajita chicken nachos and the chicken and spinach quesadilla to share. The chicken made me feel sick to my stomach. The presentation was poor and the quality was poor. The spinach was slimy and the nachos didn't really have much cheese. Also really overpriced. $31 for our meal that we didn't eat. Do yourself a favor and get some real Mexican food at Tortilleria Perches. Costs less, tastes better. read more
