On our quest for great Springfield Mexican we decided to give La Ploma a try. First off top point for decoration. Place looks great. Small but upscale for a Mexican place in town. This is not classic mexican its more designer. Like the walls the plates come out clean and fresh. I had the chicken spinach enchiladas dish and they were amazing. The lady really liked hers as well. Both were made to order and full of flavor and not heavy. If anything I wish I had one more enchilada on my place because I just couldn't get enough of that flavor. We finished the meal off with fried ice cream which was good but the cinnamon shell it came in pushed it to great. We will be coming here again! read more

Best fish tacos in town! Lightly breaded, fresh spiced cabbage and a killer sauce, the soft flour tacos are refreshing and quite good. One of the more "upscale" Mexican places in town, and definitely worth experiencing their unique take on Mexican with a neat festive atmosphere. Recommend it! read more

I love me some good Mexican food and this place offers something different than the other places in town. I would describe the food as mexi gourmet they play on the different flavor of Latin America and plate the food in a very appetizing way. The atmosphere is very nice and would make a great place to go out for date night or a business luncheon. This is our favorite place for cheese dip in Springfield besides Moes in the mall. Food: Great variety I feel, lots of range on the menu - from sides and options for your meal to meal style. Pretty good quality, Ive not had a bad meal yet. Tex - Mex all the way in flavor and a pretty solid representation of it. The meals have been just good - I haven't had anything on the menu Ive felt was amazing. But Ive never been disappointed and that says something for Springfield standards. Service: Great, all the way kind and professional. I'd go as far to say its top notch. I honestly don't see how this place has so much hype. The food is okay at best; most of the servers seemed nice. But alas, we always get the server who would rather talk to others than check on us. The only time we saw him is when he took our order "which took 15 minutes before he came over." Then when he thought we were done, but we wanted desert, finally when he brought our check. I found the steak in my chimichanga tasted like it was out of a can, no other ingredients were in the burrito, and on top was a dash of cheese. We also ordered the small cheese dip "which was seriously maybe 1/2 cup for $4" the chips and sala was good, my wife had chicken tacos without the shell, she had to pour off some sort of liquid. I had the friend ice cream, and my wife had cheesecake chimichanga. The cornflakes on my ice cream tasted stale, and didn't have much flavor to the ice cream itself. The shell was good crisp, thin and a nice cinnamon sugar taste with hints of berry. Totally tasted like a Mexican snack cake. My wife's ice cream also bland, and the chimichanga was filled with a sort of cream cheese. Pretty tasty, but far from "cheesecake." I then went to the bathroom to wash the sticky desert off my hands, and was completely disgusted by the mess, and strong urine smell. In my opinion it's mediocre Mexican food, decent dessert but waaaaay overpriced. Everyone knows Mexican food, and breakfast is the cheapest thing you can make. And the speed it comes out of the kitchen you can tell it's not fresh. We won't be back anytime soon. read more

This is the best Mexican-type restaurant in Springfield. Food is fresh, flavorful, and priced very well. I had the California burrito and it was outstanding. They don't use mix for their margaritas, so no sugary green water. The service is awesome. This is the location where Clary's once stood and was then turned into possibly the most awful Tex-Mex restaurant I've ever been to - City Mexican. However, the old is defiantly out and the new owners have really lightened it up on the inside and it looks great. I highly recommend this place. read more

Best Mexican in Springfield, by far. And pretty damn good for just about anywhere. The food is fresh, delicious, and not the usual "plate is hot" Mexican fare. The fresh guacamole is FRESH, made expertly at the table with good ingredients. Chips and salsa are delish. My "top shelf" margarita was excellent, a type of Patron silver I've not had. Not as good as Maria's, but Maria's is essentially a tequila bar with food. I had the chicken enchiladas with mole, my son the shrimp and potato enchiladas. Both were excellent, lots of flavor, well presented, sauces not too heavy. Really well done. The atmosphere is very nice, too. Nice comfy booths, nice decor, it is a bit more clean and slightly upscale. Well done. All in all, La Paloma made the list. We will be eating here OFTEN. Note for long time Springfieldians: La Paloma is located where Clary's used to be. It is recognizable as such. Not as upscale as Clary's, but it is certainly above average. Having eaten here before, I've noticed that they drown a lot of their items in gratuitous cheese and it's downright gross to look at. So I thought that by ordering something simple like a quesadilla, it'd be more tame, containing steak, chicken, and cheese. But no. There was cheese in it, cheese on it, cheese around it, and it was swimming in cheese sauce. I ended up giving the dish to my brother at home instead. Might be good for Springfield, mount for the traveler that gets around...this place didn't cut it. Weak salsa. Just mediocre food. Service wasn't great. Plastic atmosphere. I had the fajitas and they had plenty of shrimp which was good, but steak and chicken were bland and not very exciting. My buddy had a fajita in a bowl which looked good...kinda wish I would've had that. Another colleague had the green sauce which was very poor. I really enjoyed La Paloma. The only reason I'm giving it four stars is because the service was a bit slow at the beginning. I tried a fish stew and the California burrito. Both were extremely delicious. The real standout though was the tableside guacamole. I hate gimmicks as much as the next curmudgeon, but the guacamole was the best that I've had in years. It was fresh (obviously) spicy, salty, and creamy. We ran out of room for dessert (guac and 8 million chips really knocked us on our butts), but the dessert menu looked delicious. Really solid Mexican food. On a trip through the area, we stumbled upon this local place and were really glad we stopped. Dinner service was quick - we were in and out in 30 minutes. The server was friendly, and we promptly ordered. I got the chicken mole, which was great. I'm a huge fan of mole, and La Paloma does it well. Fair prices for good portions.
